Geppetto
I have an AquaC Remora w/ maxi-jet 1200. Its too loud for when I sleep so i'm wondering if its worth keeping it if I run it on a timer? It would be on for about 15 hours a day Is it worth even using a Protein skimmer if its not always on? Would turning it off daily be harmful in any way due to stale water in the skimmer? Would the Skimmer need to "break in" when turning it on on a day to day basis? Thanks, Geppetto Link to comment
eklikewhoa
Sounds kinda dumb....why not just run it all the time but skim a bit dry? The problem I see with this is that if you have an ATO the water level will change and cause fluctuations with salinity/stability. Link to comment
gulfsurfer101
Take it back and get a quite skimmer. I use one of those red sea max prism skimmers an I don't even notice it. A lot of people knock them but it works for me and pulls out some nasy crap and keeps all my stuff happy including my SPS. Link to comment
Pship
No No Maybe No It would be pretty much pointless to having it just turn on and off. It would be best to just have it running 24/7 as it will constantly be pulling out crap. Link to comment
skydive
My Prizm skimmer is pretty loud but I sleep like a rock so it doesn't bother me. Had to do some mods so it will work right and it does alright now but I wouldn't recommend anyone buying one. Link to comment
Geppetto
The skimmer isnt a problem itself its more of a problem with the Maxi Jet. I mean obviously its best to leave it on 24/7 but I was wondering if its at lest going to help somewhat. as long as it helps at a 25% I find it worth it to do. because its better then 0%. JohnDinSD
I have a Solana in my bedroom and the skimmer drives me crazy, even when I am not trying to sleep. I have the skimmer on a timer, it turns off at 1000 and is back on at 0200. I find that once I am asleep the sound of the skimmer running does not bother me. What ever DOM accumulates in those four hours will be pulled off when the skimmer comes back on. Link to comment
121a
I'm going to put mine on a timer, probably something like the above poster. Turn off at 9:00PM and then back on at 2:30AM. If your skimmer pulls a lot then i would leave it on, but mine doesn't i have a fuge before the skimmer so that probably helps Link to comment
Geppetto
sounds good. thanks for the help Link to comment
Pship
There are a lot of mods that you can do to quiet the skimmer down. Personally what you should do is just turn the air valve a bit to find a spot where it is acceptable to sleep with it on at that level and just leave it there. Anything thing to do would be to use the air stone mod then you wont even need to use the maxijet that much! I used the airstone mod and didnt have a problem with sleeping, it was nearly dead silent, but I do agree, the maxijet is very loud. Louder than my recirculating Euro-Reef 6-2+ skimmer with 2 pumps. gulfsurfer101
Damn who bumped this thread! I haven't used a red sea in quite some time. Many years actually. I went with eshoppes and never looked back. Powerful and quiet, and very affordable. That's what I liked the most about them. Link to comment
reefist
Spray injection skimmers just make some noise. At night when the lights are off and the pH drops is when I'd want the skimmer on. Link to comment

AZDesertRat
If it isn't circulating all the time the water in it is losing its oxygen and becoming septic. Start it back up on the timer and you pump this septic water back into your tank creating problems. Run it 24/7/365. Link to comment
