Heliofungia Shrimp

I am about to place an order with SeaCrop and I noticed that they have some Heliofungia Shrimp (Periclimenes kororensis) for sale. Does anyone any experience with these? I did some googling, but mostly came up with pictures.

This would be for my recently (today) acquired a long tentacle plate:

Thanks!

No...but I'm giving you another bump because I'd like to hear more, too. I just find these commensal pairings fascinating.

If I'm not mistaken, in general the commensal shrimps in these associations get cover and food morsels, whereas their hosts may get some degree of cleaning. I wouldn't see any reason not to go ahead and try getting one!

I tried Google too, and, like you said, only found lots of images. This one was pretty spectacular:

Good luck with the Heliofungia--I love this whole family.

Well, Mary from SeaCrop wrote me back and said basically what you did. They just eat what they can pull out of the water column, or what the Heliofungia is eating. I would assume that since they have those long claws, they hide right at the base of the plate.

I added one to my SeaCrop order, so I will give it a shot :)

Thanks for the bump and thoughts.

Here is a better picture of the plate (click for big picture):

Thanks for the words of warning. I have read a lot of places that said the same thing. I have a big shipment of corals coming in a few days, so hopefully that will be the only time I might have to move it. fingerscrossed

And I will also make sure it has planty of room around it, as it expands quite a bit and I don't want anything else stinging it.

Plates are capable of actually moving around the tank :)

Good point, and I will have to take that into account when adding the new corals.

yeah i made that mistake with my torch and an orange sun coral didn't take into account that the torch would get so big when fully extended and woke up the next day to find that the torch had stung and killed one side of the sun. so many things to think about...

Well, all this hype for nothing.

I got my shrimp today, and it was pretty cool looking. Small and mostly clear. After acclimation, I tried placing him right next to the Heliofungia.

Well no sooner than he set down on the sand, I saw a purple flash, and BAM!, he was gone! :o

My stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid strawberry basslet snatched him up! Needless to say I was not happy.

Well, shall try again later with one... I knew I should have gotten rid of that fish when I caught the blennie....

But props to SeaCrop for the great delivery (see the vendor feedback/my tank log in a little while for pics of the rest of the shipment).

Ah, bummer!!

Cute pic in the bag...

Glad you're going to try again.

And try to appreciate what a great predator your basslet is...that's what I tell myself when my cats catch something... :) (Although it was a stretch when one of them walked by with one of my budgies in his mouth, when I was in labor...)

Yikes! That must of have been a sight.

Well, someone else can now appreciate the basslet as a predator. I caught him yesterday (20 oz soda bottle trick) and took him to a LFS to trade in. I picked up two yellow clown gobies and a hi-fin striped goby. Of course when I woke up this mornng I noticed another great predator (the sally light foot) got one of the clown gobies last night (they were really small). Sigh .... the "circle of life" I guess.

There's just no love in your tank is there.

Heh, no there isn't and my wife is giving me grief about it too! She is afraid for the second clown goby now ... I placed a half of a 20 oz soda bottle in the tank last night with some krill at the bottom, and leaned it against the rockwork hoping the crab would be tempted by the food. But he is no dummy. My wife saw him last night testing the plastic and probably found it too slippery.

On the plus side, my new hi-fin striped goby seems to have found the pistol shrimp, and they are co-habitating.

  • 9 years later...

Hate to bump a really old thread, but search has come up with nothing else.

Does anyone else have experience with these guys? LFS got some in and I'm wondering if they'd just become clown food, or conflict with the sexy shrimp in my tank. I didn't really get an answer other than 'they hide in coral' at the store..
