wrek
Tips? Thoughts? Feedback? Initial build with 6 white XM-L and 12 Royal Blue XT-E running on a single 40w @ 700mA 1 x Heatsink 5.886 inch (Length (Inches): 24) 1 x 12V 500mA Power supply for fan 1 x Fan speed controller 4 pin molex to two 3 pin fan 1 x Fan 80mm 1 x Inventronics 40w driver - 700mA 2 x XP/XT Optic - 6 Pack (40 Degree) - $1.59ea 2 x CREE XT-E Royal Blue (Quantity in Package: 6 Pack (5% discount)) 1 x XML Optic - 6 Pack (40 Degree) - $1.79ea 1 x AC Plug for Drivers - 3 Prong 1 x CREE XM-L White (Color: Neutral White (5000K), Group: T5, Quantity in Package: 6 Pack (5% discount)) 3 x BERGQUIST Thermal Adhesive 20mm Star - 6 Pack 1 x Solder Tube 10g (63/37) 1 x Aluminium Dimmer Knob (Color: Black) 1 x 10K Ohm 1/2 watt Linear Taper Potentiometer View of the tank. Rather blue. Would be nice if I had corals but I have fish and live rock. Added some white and 450nm blue/violet. Moved the 6 white XM-L and 4 new XM-L white to their own 50w @ 1750mA Added 4 violet and 2 white XM-L to the existing 12 Royal Blues on the 40w @ 700mA Much nicer output. I don't have coral so don't need all that blue. 1 x Fan 80mm1 x Inventronics 50w driver - 1750mA 2 x True Violet LED - 390-430nm (Quantity in Package: 2 Pack, Optic Degrees: 120°) 1 x CREE XM-L White (Color: Cool White (~6500K), Group: U2, Quantity in Package: 6 Pack (5% discount)) 2 x BERGQUIST Thermal Adhesive 20mm Star - 6 Pack 1 x 10K Ohm 1/2 watt Linear Taper Potentiometer It's sitting 12" above a white egg-crate cover which is reflecting and dispersing a lot of the light, probably about 20% of it. When I suspend the 10"x24" aluminum heat sink from the ceiling I plan on removing the egg-crate top. Either way, this is SOOO much better than my old Yellow lights seen below: Link to comment
Milad LEDGroupBuy.com
looks great. FYI you should run the True Violets at 500mA or lower otherwise they will overheat. Link to comment

Well I am running 4 violets on the little 40watt 700mA being shared with 12 royal blues and even 2 xml. I don't know the math but was thinking they should be getting less than the full 700? I do have the pot installed so i can turn them down. Really I could omit them completely since i don't have corals. This make sense or am I still in danger with them? Link to comment

Amperage doesn't change depending on load (ie, more LEDs per string doesn't mean less power goes to each one). All the LEDs receive the same amperage, which is whatever the driver is throwing at them, in this case, at full power, 700ma. Link to comment
Milad LEDGroupBuy.com
As Jedi said, you need to turn it down. Just measure the voltage on the pot from green to purple. Turn the dial until you see around a 6.8v on the multimeter (68%) Dont worry about measuring the string but if you do, make sure you securely attach the multimeter inline because if for some reason you break the string and then reconnect the string, you will blow your LEDs.
