    Help with Nitrates

Hi, This is my first saltwater tank. It's been up and running about 8 months. Not exactly sure if I am doing anything right. I wonder if I should be worried about nitrates??? Here is my setup: 20 gallon long tank HOB Aqueon filter HOB refugium with chaeto Aqueon No skimmer Current USA Marine Orbit IC LED dual lights set on 14k color (par should be from 50 - 175 where my coral are) Fish: 2 oscellarus clowns, firefish goby, yellow watchman goby. Bengai cardinal Inverts: pistol shrimp, skunk cleaner shrimp, 5 hermit crabs Corals: zoas, palys, 1 hammer, 1 xenia, GSP, bubble coral, duncans, Ricordia mushroom, candy cane, toadstool leather, 1 acan, 1 favia, 1 clove polyp water test: amonia = nitrite = nitrate = 0, calcium = 420 and dkh = 9 (API test), phosphate = 0.03 ,(Red Sea test), salt = 1.025 Fish all look good. YWM Goby and pistol shrimp paired (very fun). My xenia has really gone downhill since I got it (my first coral about 3 months ago) looks bad now. Shrinking and moving less and less. I know these should grow like weeds. Zoas and Palys and hammer and gsp and toadstool and candy cane have grown. Not much change in any of the others. Question: Should I worry about my low nitrates? Is my xenia doing bad because of this or something else? Would my coral grow faster if my nitrates were 5-10? I think this is a full load of fish for this tank and even after a month without a water change, maybe my phosphates get up to 0.05 and nitrates still 0!!!! I have turned my refugium light down to 5 hours a day. I feed more dry food and less brine (supposed to increase nitrates more than phosphates says BRSTV), still no luck. Should I stick with what I am doing and call this relatively successful, so far, or do something different to get nitrates up????

    RODI System

Hello all! I will just be straight up and honest here, my saltwater tank uses tap water. now now, no need to yell at me, I know this isnt great, and now relize all the benifits of an RODI system, but I also realize the parts that arent so appealing. I am deffinitly investing in one, but what I really hate is the waste water, I know it has to have some way to get rid of the bad parts, but I am just concerned about how much water I would be wasting with one of these systems. assuming you guys are able to talk me into it, I a still not gonna buy like a 1k system, or even anything close, so here are a couple I was thinking of, what are the pros/cons of these systems in your mind? my first choice: https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/4-stage-value-ro-di-system-bulk-reef-supply.html My second choice, it is a little buit cheaper but I dont know what I would be sacrificing in quality: https://www.amazon.com/LiquaGen-5-Stage-Reverse-Osmosis-Deionization/dp/B01FNAPGPA/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=rodi+system&qid=1597765745&sr=8-6
  3. I have been fighting keeping the water clear on my 24 gallon cube. I've had it for about 9 months Do all the suggested maintenance. I just did a complete water change about three weeks ago and now it looks like green water. Before refilling I cleaned all the decorations and glass. Replaced the gravel and scrubbed out any visible allege. The water was great for about 3 weeks now it looks like I need to start over. My tank has 4, about an inch, tetras, 4 smaller then the tetras fan tail guppies and a cat feeder. I put in a couple of water plants hoping that would help. I do replace the foam filter and charcoal as required. Maybe I need to do it more often. I currently don't have any allege blooming. Any suggestions? I am considering putting and exterior filtration system and a bigger pump. Would this be advisable? Any help would be appreciated.

    Water Topoff Idea

I have the water topoff shown below. Would it be a good/awful/neutral idea to add some quick growing freshwater plants, like elodea, to further purify the freshwater (and maybe keep algae from growing in it) while it's in the bottle?

    Alkalinity and calcium

Hello, I'm struggling to understand the relationship between alkalinity and calcium levels in my tank. I’ve read a ton about it but I’m still confused. I have a high level of calcium (500) and low alkalinity (7) I’m not sure how to address this. I have B-Ionic calcium buffer system with component 1 alkalinity and component 2 calcium but I’ve never used it. Can someone help me out? Specifically can you tell me what you would do in my situation. I have a 13.5 gallon fluval evo tank. I also have a protein skimmer attached For coral I have some mushrooms and Xenia, a pink birds nest coral, zoas, and some leather corals. Additionally I have a coco worm (hard tube feather duster), a clownfish, 2 cardinalfish, and one tiny goby.

I fed my tank some seaweed today. A piece of it got sucked by the wave maker and torn into smaller pieces. Now, my question is, how does seaweed effect water quality?

    Parameters are A ok

Hello everyone, I just want to share my results since I started my DIY algae scrubber and vodka dosing. Last mid June I started my DIY ATS and vodka dosing and results are finally up to par. I have a 40 gallon breeder reef tank with softies, LPS and a couple of SPS and a 10 gallon sump which where I built my ATS. I use API reef master test kit and the results up. I just want to share this because a lot of people are afraid of doing carbon dosing using vodka. before I started with this experiment here are my parameters first picture was before my nitrates are undetectable Phos 1ppm Nitrates 60ppm cal 380 kh 10 SG 1.025 Ph 8.0 after 2 1/2 months here are the results 2nd picture is the nitrates already undetectable. Phos Undetectable Nitrates Undetectable cal 420 kh 11 SG 1.025 ph 8.0
