Hello, I have a new cycle cycled aquarium. I added two clown fish, 5 snails, live sand, live rock, a fluval filter. Also, I have 2 corals added in, and I will like to know if I will need protein skimmers or special lighting. Or just in general what kind of equipment to keep the corals happy.

Hello everybody, I’m looking for help/advice in setting up a brand new nano reef tank. So I allowed my daughter to bring some hermit crabs home from Florida and turns out they were marine thin stripe crabs. After much groaning, I find a Fluval 13.5 online and it arrives broken. I’ve already had these crabs is a makeshift container for over a week so I bought a Coralife BioCube 16 from a local fish store at a great price. I set up the cube last night with Arag-Alive Bahama sand and Imagitarium Pacific Ocean water and set the crabs inside. This morning the water has cleared up and I have some CaribSea life rock coming today. The heater is working well and has the water at 80 degrees. I tested the water and got the following with my API master saltwater kit. PH: 7.9 Amonia: .25-.50 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: 0 Is this normal? Do I need to add any of these additives I see? Thanks in advance. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Hey guys! So i'm approaching 3 years with my fluval m60 (24 gallon all in one). Like most I have been through struggles and learned a lot and finally have a great looking tank full of beginner coral (and my clown fish). My next move is getting an anemone which i'm pretty much sure i'm ready for since the tank is established, and water chem. is overall decent which seems like the most important for anemone including good lighting which I have. Once I get my anemone and it becomes settled I want to move into caring for stoney corals, which is what this post will be about. Right now I honestly don't tell parameters much. Only time I will is when a problem occurs and want to get a understanding of what could be causing it. Testing only includes pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. I rely heavily on weekly/bi-weekly water changes ranging from 5-20% depending on various factors, to just hope my parameters are in check. So with what I want to do I know I will have to start checking parameters more frequently as well getting a more wide spreed of what parameters to be checking for. Since checking parameters can be time consuming using chemical testing(?) compared to digital testing I'm looking to invest in digital testing for parameters that should be checked more often. What do you guys recommend testing for weekly (while doing wc). For these parameter testing I'd like to purchase digital testing so save time. Then since I want to care for advanced species what else should I test for. This is a list off the top of my head I should be testing for so please inform me if more should be include. pH ammonia nitrite nitrate calcium dKh(alkalinity) magnesium I'd love any feed back for what I should do, personal opinion, or tips/purchases that could be helpful as I will be moving to a more advanced reef system.

I have a clarification question regarding my alkalinity test. I have a Red Sea testing kit. I included a picture of the instructions and the reference page. The instructions say to add one drop of the KH indicator to obtain the “start” color. What’s confusing me is that my “start” color is a much lighter blue than the color they show. Should I add multiple drops to obtain the same color they show, and then start counting my drops? Or should I start counting drops right after my first drop, even though my start color is so light? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! I imagine this will be an easy question to answer for someone with experience 🙂

Can I completely ignore Ca, Mg, PO4 for now and introduce corals later?
Muffin87 posted a topic in Beginners Discussion
Hello! I've just ordered my first nano reef tank kit, it's a 15 gallon tank. Can I do things in this order? start cycling my tank testing for pH dKH, NH3, NO2, NO3 (ignoring Ca, Mg, Po4) finish cycling my tank introduce fish: (2 ocellaris, 1 gramma loreto) FOWLR phase: use some months to familiarise myself with fish-keeping with no corals Start testing for Ca, Mg, PO4 as well Introduce corals If I started testing for Ca, Mg and PO4 after months of ignoring them, and the values were all terrible, would they be that difficult to adjust in order to introduce corals? I'm a bit confused by 'cycling products' like "Red Sea Mature Pro", which make your tank coral-ready. It gave me the impression I must plan ahead for coral-keeping, even if corals are gonna come much later. Thanks! -
Looking for opinions on best testing kits to use while cycling a new tank and thereafter. We’re planning on being pretty vigilant and patient when cycling this new tank up and are interested in what everyone else recommends. I did not realize there were so many brands ?

Used my Hanna checker and it currently reads at 0.05 ppm. I have a 20 gallon tank (18 gallon including rock, sand, equipment) Dirextions on container were not too clear. Any helps appreciate.
