Amp's 35 Breeder So after nearly a year of grabbing ebay deals, three different leaking 40 breeder tanks, and accumulating a bunch of supplies I've managed to scrape-together and finish an upgrade for the 20 long. The older system had been struggling for over a year, dino's, monti eating nudi's, skeletal erosion band disease... A clownfish who has been through two two-month treatments of General Cure food, a month of fenbendazole food, too many two-week treatments of both to count, multiple mag-sulfate food courses and still has a mixture of normal-movements, thin stringy movements, and white casing movements. A pair of Rolland damsels which spawned only for the male to almost kill the female overnight in response. A year old maxima killed by a corallimorph relocation attempt... Periods of growth followed by mysterious recession, nutrient swings, a skimmer which constantly tried to perform auto-water changes... And plain old too-little space. I'd wanted a lagoon-style system to begin with, so I set out to making one. There's technically a mythical tank-size, a "30 breeder", produced by a couple of manufacturers, but it's almost impossible to actually find or buy one, instead I decided to wait for a $ per gallon sale and make my own. I really don't need the extra height of a standard 40 breeder, fish don't need it and corals getting that tall need to be trimmed anyway. I much prefer using the extra air for the light, plus smaller, easier waterchanges, and I can now have some serious wave action (I may build a standing-wave generator out of a spaghetti tupperware container and the Jebao XD). -The baffle is jury-rigged an mis-measured (I decided to make it 35 instead of 32 gallons last-minute) -The skimmer was just a K-100 body I grabbed for next-to-nothing, cleaned-up and bought a new couple pumps for -The light is the same used 120w Maxspect I bought and had refurbished for just a touch over the price of a prime HD (but now with diffuser panels backed with foil to keep light from spilling into the room) -Pump is an old sicce fountain pump (w/ 6-foot head before flow loss to 200 gph?) I grabbed on ebay for $10 new -The power heads are; the same KPS, and a new Jebao sdw-5 on Else mode -Cool random flow generator, these accelerators are awesome love it so far -Two 50W Finnex Titanium heaters on an Inkbird -A C02 Scrubber from BRS -Had some lovely glass panels made as a cover by a local glass shop, they're pretty-thick but you don't actually lose much more light doubling the thickness of float glass anyway -Oh and I made a little square from diffuser panel to eliminate any possibility of fish jumping out

[Help] Stylophora Milka struggling and getting worse everyday
Deisler posted a topic in General Discussion
Hello everyone, I have been reading here for a few months now and have learnt a lot from you guys. This is my first post here! About my tank: The tank is 60L, 4 months old since completion of cycling. It has 10kg of white porous rock (the one imported from the US I think?) and a sandbed of 2-3cm thick. It has 3 snails, 1 cleaner shrimp, 1 peppermint and 2 small clownfish. Fish is growing and shrimps are doing fine. I also have 1 trumpet coral, 1 Duncan and 1 mushroom - all growing like crazy (2->8 heads for trumpet and 2->10 heads for Duncan). The tank only has a pump (Jebao) and does not have any HoB filter or sump. I have a blackbox lighting which has been working fine for me. The tank has been fine, despite some hair algae which is in control thanks to my hardworking snails... I use Redsea blue bucket salt and aim for .025-026. I do 20% water change every week, and refill the tank with RODI water every day to compensate the water loss. No Ammonia, no nitrite. Nitrate is undetectable by testkit. PO4 is also undetectable. I do not have testkits for testing other elements, but they should be close to what Redsea blue salt indicates on the bucket (I know in theory I can never fully recover the consumed elements over time).... So my guess is: Alk: ~8.0 / Ca: 400 / Mg: 1220 .... About the Stylophora coral in question: I have bought a stylophora milka SPS coral last Friday and put it on my sandbed after acclimation and coralDx dip. The 2nd day every polyp opened. But since Monday it has been getting worse and worse everyday. You can see a pic comparing Sunday (left)/ Wednesday (middle) / Today (right). More and more polyps diappeared from their 'holes' and the coral body becomes more 'pale' day by day. I also got a Montis Cap frag last Friday and all polys of it are open so I assume it is happy. I do not plan to get any SPS that is difficult to keep with my system. The only reason I got the Stylophora is that I read it is an easy SPS and can be kept in system like mine. The Stylophora receives mid-flow and mid-light (~200PAR). I am running out of options now and desperate to find anything I can do to make it better. A few things I have thought about: 1) Flow too low - I tried to give it a little more flow but it did not help; 2) Light too low - Do you think I should put it to the top of the rock (~350 PAR)? 3) Mg too loow - I know my Mg may be a bit low for SPS, but I am using the mixing ratio on the blue bucket for 'SPS dominant tank'. Is the dosing my only option now? 4) Nitrate too low - I've also read Nitrate ~0 is bad for SPS. But I wonder if this is the issue here? ........ I would be really grateful if you can let me know if any of the above 4 (or anything else you can think of) could be the issue and to hear any advice you can give so I can try to help the stylo. PS: Some holes show no sign of polyps - does that mean those polyps already died? Thank you all! Cheers, Deisler- 11 replies

Hi all, and hi to the Nuvo 10 community! For the past year or so, I've been wanting a reef of my own, and I'm now addicted. I decided on the Innovative Marine Nuvo 10 for the compact size and transportability, given that I plan to take it to college eventually. As of the moment I am writing this, I currently have put the rock and sand into the tank, after cycling the rock for about 3 weeks in a 5-gallon bucket using Fritz Turbo Start. The sand is Fiji Pink, and the rocks are Walt Smith 2.1. I have the tank on the 10 gallon white JBJ Nano Cubey Stand, which looks really great with the tank. Equipment List IM Nuvo 10 Tank 10 Gallon White JBJ Nano Cubey Stand AI Hydra 26 HD (Modified AB+ Settings) Cobalt Neo-Therm 50 watt heater (best heater on the market) Sicce Syncra .5 Return Pump Vortech mp10wqd inTank Media Basket (Running inTank filter floss, 2 chemi pure blue nano packets, and 1 marinepure cube) Tunze Nano ATO (Not running a skimmer, I'm running 4 MarinePure cubes in the second chamber) Aquatic Life 100gpd RODI unit Tropic Marin Pro Reef salt (mixes extremely fast) Tank as of August 16, 2019. No light or ATO yet. Tank as of October 2, 2019. Hydra 26 with diffuser has been added. Snails, hermits, and goby have been introduced. No corals quite yet.
