  1. Hi, all. I have hit an equipment-purchasing wall, so to speak. I have deduced that the Vee Gee SXT-3 refractometer is the best one for reefers, but I haven’t found a Canadian store that carries them. I ordered the Hannah digital meter, but cancelled it because the reviews were up and down. Also, the Red Sea refractometer doesn’t have great reviews. Am I overthinking this? Would the Hannah meter be okay? Maybe it is fine because a tiny bit of error won’t harm inhabitants. I don’t want to spend what a Milwaukee costs, btw.
  2. Anyone in or near 76014 (Arlington, tx) that wants to drop 150$ and come get all my SW stuff? I'm moving in 2 weeks so I'm just gonna let whoever wants a deal come get it. My biocube 14 and stand with lid removed, stevieT media rack, mj1200, AI NANO with controller, reef brite 20k actinic led bar, my biocube 8 all stock with ballast, a sw master test kit. The glass is not scratched, it has some coraline and a favite Skeleton on the front bottom but that all scrapes off with vinegar and an edge. If you want to see what it looked like set up, I used to be on here back in the day, I'm sure my posts are still here. 150$ obo. It all works.

Started with atm colony for bacteria. my red sea refractometer out of the box ive mixed to 35ppt i just got a hanna salinity checker - calibrated (twice because of reading) and its coming out at 46ppt !!! What do i do. Which do i read as true. Im terrified i lose the fish. cant get to a fish shop to have water tested by them till monday now.

    Important

I know that this has been discussed before but I wanted to share an experience and how important it is to change calibration fluid. So over the last couple of waterchanges I started noticing my refractometer needed more calibration than usual. It wasn't reading 35ppt with the calibration fluid. I decided to order new calibration fluid as the last time this happened, calibration fluid was the issue. While waiting for the solution, the last week I have been having issues with some corals. My birdsnest and stylo started rtn'ing. My euphyllia, blastos, and plate were all retracted. All else fine. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. All parameters were good and stable. Just checked the salinity today as I got the new fluid in. Yup, my tanks were off and so was the refractometer.. 20g wasn't bad, 1.027 but normally 1.025 25g(where the problems were) was 1.030, normally 1.025 Checked the older calibration fluid 4 times. 40ppt Calibrated the refractometer with the new fluid and checked 4 times to make sure it was right 35ppt So 2 times I have noticed that once refractometer fluid gets to about 1/4 of the bottle left, it starts reading wrong. I corrected the 20g but I'm slowly lowering the 25g as there was so much of a difference. Gonna double check later all is ok and if not then maybe it's the refractometer needs replacing.
