I began reefing when I was about fourteen years old, and originally started the hobby of fish husbandry when I was maybe ten. I quickly became obsessed, but in earnest I was too young and crashed my then 37 gallon "reef". Fast forward sixteen years and I'm thirty, and not using my parents money to support my hobby. I have been wanting to start a pico reef for many years, but put it off until now. I also, live in a major city with access to many awesome corals, so why not? I was most inspired by El Fab's Pico which is why I special ordered the JBJ from the USA (and paid a ridiculous amount to have it shipped to Canada). Also, another 7 gallon bowfront tank that I remember from many years ago (like 2002 lol). I have been curing some Pukani Dry Rock for over three months because they have been leeching phosphates like crazy. I can say I had a lot of luck with dosing Lanthanum during the cure process. If I could go back in time I would have dosed LC immediately following the bleach/primed water stage. It rips phosphates out of the water quickly. I would not recommend dosing in a DT though. I went for the bare bottom tank because of the horror stories I have read about sandbeds. Aesthetically speaking, the sandbed does nothing for me and the tank is actually sitting at eye level while standing so it would be hard to notice it anyway. I would rather have an easier space to clean and there is a lot that can go wrong quickly in a pico. There is no starboard on the bottom, just the glass. Lighting the tank currently is the Hipargero A029 Aqua Knight and as far as color goes I like it. I plan to run a 6-7 hour photoperiod starting when I add zooplankton/phytoplankton. The HOB AC70 Refugium will be running filter floss and chaeto with a 12watt ACKE grow light duct taped to it. The grow light will be run on a reverse photoperiod to the pico's lights. I'll be changing out the floss weekly or bi weekly. Another idea I have had is to occasionally use the "pico" filter included with the aquarium itself to run as a chemipure reactor? For instance, if something gets out of whack quickly and a water change isn't possible, just set up the pico filter with some chemipure blue and run it for a few days. Just an idea. I'm using Red Sea Coral Pro salt with distilled store bought water. I am currently dosing the tank with Dr. Tim's Ammonia and Dr. Tim's One and Only Nitrfiying Reef Bacteria to start up. Temp is set to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and I will be using API to test during cycle (and switching to Salifert or Hanna once corals are added). Once cycle finishes I plan to add copepods, phytoplankton and chaeto and to begin the photoepriod. Maybe a week or two after that I will add a part of or the entire CUC. I am open to suggestions regarding all livestock. As far as water changes go, I am thinking probably doing a 50% weekly change and upgrading to a 100% once the inhabitants begin to use minerals more quickly. Also, open to suggestions. Tank has been up and running for 24 hours and I'm very excited to see what I can do with this little tank! Thanks in advance for any replies/suggestions. This community has been great over the last four months and I have learned a lot while researching! Cheers
  2. HOW I STARTED MY FIRST SALTWATER TANK Hello! And welcome to my first ever saltwater tank! I chose a 29G tank because it fit perfectly in my home office. I'll list more information about my tank specs at the bottom on this thread, so feel free to skip ahead if you don't need to learn from my very n00b mistakes 😄 TANK AGE: I started my tank Mar 10 2021, and added fish pretty quickly since I used both live rock and water from a local aquarium shop that did my tank installation & setup. Everything on the tests were fine, and correct bacteria dosage was added as a precautionary supplement. Tank status the morning before the first TEV: 2 juvenile Black Snowflake Clowns (was trying to pair, different sizes), 1 Sailfin Tang, 1 Green Polyp XS TANK TEVS (tank events) 1. The Seaweed Mishap I knew Tangs liked seaweed. I gave my tang Cheese a little too much seaweed. He tore it apart and it got everywhere. I didn't know what to do. I grew up in Monterey, CA. Seaweed is everywhere. Everything seemed fine. But no, this was dried seaweed. And you're not supposed to leave it in for more than 2-3 hours (I think don't trust me on this pls). This messed with my nitrate levels pretty bad. I really wanted to add another coral to my tank. I was TOO EAGER. 2. The Maintenance Day of Doom Oh boy was I so unaware of what was yet to come. I brought water to be tested at my other local fish store so that I knew it was safe to buy a coral. They told me I needed water changes. CHANGES yes, I too almost underestimated how many changes I was going to need. But more on that later, lets first start with my first ever water change. I drained 20% of the water, then added in ROI (is that the acronym? I'm hard of hearing and its so hard to hear the employees at the shop when they speak through their mask) water and to dilute the salinity and some of the nitrates. I let it run for ~ 1 hour to let all that "good-good" mix around with the water. Then I drained the tank again 50% and added more water. But I was foolish and did it by myself. And didn't use my hand. The water splashed....everywhere...it was so cloudy.. 3. Death Roe The unenthusiastic clownfish that was forced to become the male died first. He was weak because they were fighting for their first day (a couple weeks prior). A day later the female clown died. My Tang then came down with really bad ich. He died the next day as well. My Green Polyp was the only guy to survive. 3 water changes and 1 week later, I added 2 blue chromis to get some poop in there... but they died. It is because I bought them at petsmart. It was a bad batch. Don't recommend. Since then, I upgraded the filter, heater, thermometer, protein skimmer, and light. So it is basically like a brand new tank. Most of the gear is controlled by wifi automatically I love it so much. It is so worth the money if you want a low stress tank. I also got some really healthy live rock teaming with all kinds of healthy organisms from another local aquarium shop. My new fully paired clownfish are also doing very well. I have another cool coral frag that I will share about later. There is a BUNCH of tank drama around this coral at night. It is so fun to watch! Don't worry all this "drama" is literally just an ecosystem with a food chain. In the ocean, each species has its own way of protecting itself, and thats no different in this tank! The fish stay out of it, and the coral benefit from the organisms fighting over the seaweed. TODO: I will get to this things soon! It is night and I do not want to disturb my tank's auto light schedule. - Add images of tank and equipment setup - Add images of wildlife in tank - Add specs of gear - Add image of completed home office Please tag along for my journey or learn from it so no more fish are lost.
  3. Hello All, I'm new, not just to this forum, but to reefs in general. Iv never kept fish before so I have alot of learning to do but I am up for the challenge. I know this is a tough hobby to maintain but it's one I'm looking forward to. All I ask is that you take it easy on me and help me through this journey. I will make many mistakes and have lots of questions, but please bear with me. As I'm new, I still don't really know what I want (in terms of fish and coral atleast). Iv enjoyed looking at all the amazing reefs on here and want to see what I can create and maintain. I love the vibrant colours of reef tanks and the interesting forms of corals. I appreciate these tanks as a piece of art and would like to see what I can create. In terms of what I know I want, I am one that likes clean and seamless aesthetics. What I mean by this is that I prefer plumbing and electrics to be hidden as much as possible. Ideally all that should be seen is the tank and the fish and coral inside. I am also someone who is frugal so much of the equipment I will need I will either buy second hand or DIY where possible. The DIY aspect isn't just due to frugality, but because I enjoy the feeling of building with my own 2 hands. I have taken my first steps on my journey already - I have purchased of an auction site an eaReef 900s and also a cabinet that I think looks aesthetically pleasing. The cabinet is not a specialised aquarium cabinet and so I will need to modify it. I have included pictures of these. (Please bear with me as I get better with my formatting within this thread). I picked up the tank on a whim - I put in a cheeky bid and ended up the winner. The tank looks to be in good condition and seems to be well made by a reputable brand. My biggest qualm with the tank is the plumbing. As mentioned, I like plumbing to be concealed and this tank obviously has the bulkheads extending on the back. I am also very keen on having the cabinet/ tank flush against the wall. The depth of the tank is 500mm and the depth of the cabinet is just over 500mm and so if the bulkheads remain where they are then it will not be possible to have the cabinet flush with the wall. At the moment I am open to ideas and inspiration, but I have an idea of what I want to do with this tank. I would like to remove the existing bulkheads and put some sort of leak tight caps to cover the holes. Ideally the caps will be black as i am considering putting black vinyl on the back glass so the black caps shouldn't be an eyesore. In regards to relocating the plumbing, I would like to drill the bottom of the tank to insert bulkheads, and then to build a weir from black perspex which will conceal the pipes extending from the bottom. I have been in contact with the manufacturer who has stated the base glass is not tempered, but I would also like confirmation from the people here who may have experience with this tank. The relocation of the plumbing will be the first major modification, and also a make or break of this project so I am very keen to get some feedback and ideas. I have tried to search for any similar projects of drilling the base of the tank but haven't found any. I would be grateful if any useful links can be provided so I can read more. Thank you for taking the time to read my long winded OP and I hope you'll join me on my journey. I look forward to reading all your comments and inspiration. Cheers Cmaza

    pico reef tank

Hi, I'm noob reefer from korea. I'm not good at English... So please understand if I say something weird 🙂 I fell in love with Nemo after watching the movie 'Finding Nemo' 😍 I really wanted to raise a cute little Nemo 🐠 So I bought a small fishbowl. And little by little, I began to decorate it with the ocean I had imagined. I want to share this process with you guys. (These are photos of changes from August 12, 2020 to November 23, 2020) My little ocean has been changing little by little. And now it's look like the real ocean. Isn't it? 😄 Of course, it's still a lot lacking compared to other reefer's tank... 😢 So I'll keep trying hard and come back with a better look next time. Thanks for reading my long story. Have a good day 🙂

    Fishsticks Nuvo 10 build!

HI REEFERS! Long time reader first time poster. I am starting a 10 gallon reef tank and want to share my ups and probably many, many, many downs! I have had reef tank for over 6 years, and still feel like a noob. I went with a Innovative Marine fusion Nuvo 10. I want to make it an anemone and clown fish tank but for now I will temporary house two Clown fish as well as a Pink Streak Wrasse. This is only temporary until I get my algae out break in my 20 gallon tank under control.
  6. Hi everyone I am brand new here and thinking of starting my first reef tank!!! I want to have a reef tank any where from 20 to 40 gallons and I want to be able to grow all kinds off coral. I also want to only spend $250 on the tank, light, filter and rock. Please any suggestions will help. Thanks!
  7. 👋🏻 hello! This is my first saltwater tank, and with not much of an aquarium culture in my little mountain town, I’m hoping to share and learn with some other obsessed aquarists! I’ve got a nice 55 gal South American freshwater planted tank that’s been going great for about 2 years. I got this biocube 29 used with all of the stock equipment, but have upgraded to the following -eheim 100 watt heater -inkbird temp controller -duetto ATO -IM wavelink wave maker -stock skimmer -dry rock from Bulk Reef Supply -inTank media basket with filter floss and bio media plate pieces -stock lighting (for now) I’m just now cycling, entering week 2, so feeding and testing for ammonia/nitrites. I seeded with seachem stability. Running with lights off. I will run a small Refugium with chaeto in the back sump when I get some nitrates and phosphates going. Would love to hear advice or encouragement! Thanks for letting me join the forum 👍🏻 Ps follow me on Twitter @JulieReefer
  8. Hello all! Thanks for readimg, I just have a quick question. I plan on filling my biocube 16 tonight and I'm not sure what filtration to run through the cycle. I initially planned on doing filter floss on top, and maybe the matrix media for the cycle? I also have pyrogen and carbon but not sure if it should be added right away during cycle. Also, can someone tell me how the mechanical filtration goes on top? Stupid noob question lol but not sure if it goes on top of this top part, or directly under it? And finally, I removed the sponge in between chamber 2 and 3 and am planning on running some carbon there. Thanks in advance!

    Old Oceanic BioCube 29

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advise or anything actually that will help me with an old Oceanic Biocube. The tips I keep finding are very old so I just wanted to know if those are still acceptable or if there is new information I could use?
  12. Hi Nano-Reef'ers, My name is Danny Tran and this will be the start of my reefing experience. My goal? To record every success and mistake and lessons learned through this forum. I'm located in Vancouver, BC Canada. A little about me, I'd been a freshwater aquarist for about 4 years, mainly focusing on aquascaping with easy to keep small fish. I've had marble angels, pleco of all types, tetras, and shrimp! I never thought that one day I would start a reef tank. My interest really started when I saw all these beautiful aquariums with amazing colourful corals and very few fish, feeding corals, growing up them, propragating them, it all was so fascinating. I also spent 2 hours reading this CRAZY incident of a bobbit worm taking over an entire aquarium and destroying everything in it's path, here is the link....http://www.michiganreefers.com/forums/advanced-topics/84173-bobbit-worm-chronicles.html So here we go.... I don't have anything in possession yet but I just wanted to begin with a Hello and get your best advice on getting started.
  13. I am getting this tank handed down to me by odd occurrences. I really want to do it right and make it into a well rounded tank. It is a 40 Gallon with a Clown Fish, Yellow Tang and a shrimp. It has every part it needs to run but I just need advice on what other Fish I should add and Plants i should put in. Please let me know. Preview attachment IMG_3310.PNG IMG_3310.PNG 5.7 MB
  14. My tank was started on 8/30/17. I kept the stock light, filter media and pump and added Fluval's PS2 mini protein skimmer. I used 10 pounds of Caribsea Fiji pink live reef sand and approximately 13 pounds of dry rock. Threw some fish food in there to decompose and lots of aquavitro seed to start the biofilter up and cure my rock. After my nitrates started rising and ammonia and nitrite fell I did a large water change with seachem prime and more bacteria and added my first fish, a little ocellaris. It's been four days, he is doing great, swimming all over and eating everything put in the tank. Excited to see how this turns out A few more pics. I can't figure out how to take a good picture with the blue lights on on this iPhone
  15. Newbie Ian here, experienced wild betta breeder and rare plant grower. After months of research I went to my LFS and picked up a FLuval SeaEvo or whatever. Brought it home decided I was an idiot and went back for the new Cobalt C-VUE 18 AIO, which is GORGEOUS and great quality, at least for an AIO, though It actually doesn't come with all that much. Perhaps I'm old fashioned but when it says "All In One" I should get a heater, skimmer, and especially a light. That being said the tank is lovely 20"W 12" T 16 Deep with dual filter socks, and a Flow Rate of 165 GPH. So my first question is this, anyone else running one of these? 2. I am going to buy Live sand this week and water and stone in two (payday ya know?) how important is light and heat at this stage? Thanks in advance for the A's

    Jagadeesh's Elysian Gills

Elysian Gills... Nice name for a tank, right? (Don't answer that!) So, I just did the initial "setup" on this 2.5 tank. I got some of the man-made live rock as I don't want worms or aptasia or other crap I don't grow myself. Woot! The light is pretty awesome. I like my rock placement. Live sand is good. Put a whole bottle of Bio-Spira in there (bottle said do the whole thing up to thirty gallons). I have ceramic rings and a ChemiPure sachet in the back hidden part. I got a spinner thing on the output. Now..here's what sucks... the poor little "powerhead" is severely not enough. I thought maybe it would be because I have the exact same tank set up as a planted freshwater with a single betta. At wide open it almost blew the fins off the fish. Po' critter. So now I have the little pump wide open in the pico tank and even without the spinny thing it is weak. I don't know. Maybe it's bogged down with sand particles? Too many ceramic rings around and on top of it? The killer is that the little pump **may** be two inches by two inches by two inches. Tiny. I can't seem to find a good one online that is that small. Well, I can't find a single one - good or not - that is that small. I don't want a powerhead showing in such a tiny tank. I may have to just break this down and transfer everything to the JBJ picotope with the AC 50 when it arrives on Wednesday. Any advice? The flow is stronger without the spinny thing but I don't want just laminar flow. I've read some corals are low flow. There's hope. But what exactly is low flow when it comes to a picotope? There's absolutely no rating on the pump anywhere so I don't even know what I have. I am LOATH to take it out again. I put all the hidden stuff in and then realized I'd forgotten to turn the pump all the way up. I had to get about fifty ceramic rings out with CHOPSTICKS. Yep. You read it right. Thank god it's a skill I have. Would that my little pump was as good as my chopstick Kung Fu. 18. Hey all, So while I'm figuring out lighting, MarineDepot drops a bomb on the price of the AI Prime HDs for now only $200. And here I thought my mind was made up. Well, after some research again, now I'm debating. So I've come with a couple questions for those who have been around since LEDs have been the hot item. I'm trying to find a semi-concrete answer to what light is capable of maintaining an SPS tank. However it seems that a lot of the answers are either not clear or indifferent at best. And search results haven't been helpful either. So with that being said: My tank to be built is a standard 10 gallon AGA tank. Which is more reputable? The AI's or the Nanobox? Which is capable of maintaining an SPS tank of this size? (Standard 10 Gallon Tank) I assume both can be used as a refugium light with the proper focus in the proper spectrum? I'll be buying two of the ones I decide on to simplify running things. Thanks in advance for helping me learn more about LED tank lighting!
