  1. I have a 55 gallon tank which currently is not being used, and was thinking about possibly converting it into a reef tank in the next several months after I am back home, of course I would need to check it for structural integrity and possible leaks beforehand. I like the idea of actually creating a system from scratch and trying something a bit bigger than my current Biocube 32 (which is stable now after my last thread). Ideally I t would do something much larger like a 125 gallon, but I don't really have the space for it, and if I could use a tank I already have, that would save some on the initial set up. Here are the items I think I'd need for an initial set up. A filter, (I have a cannister filter for the 55 but I'm sure I'd need to get new media) Lights, I have not had experience picking my own lights yet, I will probably do some sort of LED Possibly this but if anyone have suggestions I'd be glad to hear. Protein skimmer Automatic top off system Dry rock (I would probably transfer a smaller piece of live rock from my Biocube to 'seed' it) As for stocking, of course my options are not vastly expanded for a 55 gallon, but I am hoping to try some different species. Fish x3 Pyjama cardinals, since I like the idea of having a little school of something x1 Aiptasia eating filefish, since even though they are not super colorful they have a unique look x1 Fairy or Carpenter wrasse x1 Flame hawk fish 1x some sort of goby Not sure what else if anything Coral/invertebrates It would still probably be essentially a mixed reef tank, but I'd like to try something a little more specialized and formatted from the start, I'd also like to try a bit more SPS. Basically my plan would be two arches, one higher than the other. On the higher arch there would be Montipora of various colors on the top, and low light varieties of Seriatapora and possibly Cyhphastrea further down. On the Lower arch I would try to create a Euphyllia garden, with some mushrooms near the base. I think center I would do a separate island rock Zoa garden, and Fungia plates on the sand. If I did the Flame Hawk it would limit what invertebrates I could get, so I'm not really sure about other invertebrates yet, though I'd like to get an urchin and a conch if possible. Any thoughts or suggestions about this general plan? It would be months until I could do it, and of course I would do a lot more research, but I'm curious as to ideas and suggestions.

    Light for Biocube 14g

I found a very old biocube 14g at a goodwill a few weeks ago and saw that the consensus was to replace the lights/scrap the hood. Is this light reasonable? Any advice? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0727V8C5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_KFDCKFPX05CXQW7T41H4?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
  3. Gulls

    Chiller size.

Hi all. Am having a 40 gallon display with a 25 gallon sump which includes a refuguim. I have a hailea 150a chiller from my previous tank which I intend to use for this too. Various sites displays different capacity for this chiller. Please advice if it would be enough for this setup Other paramaters to consider 1: ambience temperature : 27_30degrees celcius 2: humidity levels: 80%
  4. I have finally assembled almost everything I need to start my first salt water tank (Biocube 32), other than a bucket and auxiliary heater for mixing which i'll get today, and even though i'm sure this sounds like a pretty stupid question, my biggest quandary is figuring out how to add water to the tank initially. Ideally I would want to add rock, sand, and then water, but i'm not 100% percent sure I will be able to have enough water already mixed in another container to pour all of it in at once. My next idea was to add the dry rock, then most of the water, then add the live sand and live rock, and finally top it off with a little more water to make sure it's completely full. I want to make sure the live rock doesn't have time to dry out and that it is added to water which is around 78 degrees Fahrenheit so there isn't a significant die off. Anyway, i'm not sure if i'm making any sense, and there is a good chance I am making this way more complicated than it needs to be, but i'm just curious how other people have initially set up their aquarium, and would certainly appreciate advice and tips.
  5. Hey, So now that I have saturated myself with many hours of countless reading, I am ready build and manage a tank. I decided to go with this route because of equipment I already had. 10 gallon all in one setup. A very good starter read is here by steelhealr http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...;hl=submersible the inspiration for this build and help came from lil'wrasse cool http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...126726&st=0 I went into greater detail than most of you will need but these are questions I had when I was starting so... bear with it. Now for the pics, This is for a standard 10 gallon fish tank. The silocone will fill in the gaps so hair pin precision is not needed here. the bulkhead how it looks That is where I am for now. I will post more with fuge and siliconed. bzphotog
