  1. FM's Round 2 Reef

    FM's 15g Waterbox Peninsula

After almost a decade hiatus from the hobby, I got the itch again and decided to do things "better" this time around and correct some of the mistakes that I made my first go at this. The goal was to keep things as simple as possible, utilize a small footprint, purchase quality equipment, create an "easy" to maintain system, and stay under a $1,000 budget for all tank/equipment/rock/sand to get things started (looking back at this laughing at the thought of all this). Below is what I ended up with (I even hit my budget mark with $50 to spare!): Tank: Waterbox Peninsula Mini 15 Lighting: AI Prime 16 Controller: Neptune Systems Apex Pumps: Sicce Syncra Silent .5 Powerheads: Hygger Mini Wave Maker ATO: AutoAqua Smart ATO Lite Heater: Eheim Jager 75w (2 for redundancy) Substrate: CaribSea Special Grade (15lb) Rock: BRS Dry Rock (10lb) RODI: RO Buddy 50gpd Entire tank was setup 5/16/21 and running in about 6 hours, which was mostly just waiting for salt to mix. Live sand and dry rock clouded things up but cleared in under 12 hours (assuming I can thank the filter sock for a big part of this). Not planning to add any live stock for at least a month after cycling with the assistance of MicroBacter 7 and some live rock rubble from an established tank to seed the dry rock. No lights at all or water changes during cycling until confirmed completed. Will do a 80%-90% water change when cycle is completed to get any excess nutrients out of the tank for when the lights get to turn on to avoid any nuisance algae that can be avoided. Looking forward to seeing how things go! May 2021
  2. Hello N-R.com family, Welcome! If you are just joining us, please know this build thread is 2 tanks in 1 thread. Double the pleasure, double the fun. Over the course of the last 10 years, I've had a number of tanks with varied success, and I hope to put all the lessons learned from those tanks together in this build. Rules of the road: Simplicity is king. 15,000 pieces of equipment just create more opportunities for failure. I am going to do the basics, and I'm going to do them well. I will use automation and monitoring for safety and to make me aware of problems in the tank, but not depend on them for the survival of the tank. Some SPS. I like some SPS Corals, and I might try a frag or two that amuse me, but this tank will go back to my love of LPS, softies, and (hopefully) a clam. Fun, active, and healthy. I want my reef to thrive, the inhabitants to be healthy, and to have a tank that I can get lost staring at for hours. Red Sea Reefer 250 ZeoVit Fueled Mixed Reef Tank After 10 months, my mixed reef in the IM20 tank outgrew the space, so I decided to upgrade into a Red Sea Reefer 250, where I'll continue building upon the ZeoVit success I've had in the nano tank on a little larger scale. 👉Jump to page 5, where the Red Sea Reefer build starts 👉Or, keep reading and see where it came from Equipment Red Sea Reefer 250 (55 gallons) Kessil AP9X Light EchoTech Marine MP10 powerbeads (x2) Neptune COR return pump Clarisea roller mat for mechanical filtration Royal Exclusive 160 protein skimmer Neptune Apex EL Neptune DOS dosing pumps Neptune DOS reservoir Neptune Trident Neptune ATK (auto top off) Customized sump with redesigned plumbing Sapphire Aquatics 10g ATO Custom acrylic lid Modified stand iPad mini display ZeoVit dosing Livestock: Pair of Yasha Gobies Pistol Shrimp Cleaner Shrimp Peppermint Shrimp Blue Maxima Clam Aussie Golden Eye Chalice Branching Cyphastera Green Acans Purple Favia Rainbow Acans Watermelon Acans Weeping Willow Toadstool Orange Ricordia Mushrooms Misc. BoredNukes Reef Rebuild

Wife decide she want the tank to go from okay to as good as I can make it. A challenge I happily accepted. Tank is a Redsea Reefer XL425. Goals for this project is to better(fully) automate & failsafe the system as I travel 28 days at a time for work. Secondary goal is turning the wiring and controls from embarassing chaos to display quality. Current Equipment: 2 kessill 360s, 1 Mp40, Knockoff DC return pump, Semi ATO (kalk on a timer + redsea internal ATO tank), JBJ 1/10hp nano Chiller. Heater of some wattage (forgot but works) Ancient salt ruined ReefKeeper that is limping (shuts down if bumped at all). 2 crappy small bottom fed bio pellet, carbon(GFO) reactors. Incoming Equipment: Apex + Trident, Apex ATK,Break out Box and DOS, PM1, Apex COR15, 2 aquamax reactors, 1 aquamax Bioppellet reactor, Clarisee Auto Roller SK 3000 Aquamax Ctech t1 Calcium reactor. A bunch of plumbing material (pipe,Valves etc.), Home depot wood and (plexi)glass for controls cabinet, cheap periastic pump (CaRx feed potentially temporary ). Makeup water container TBD based off available room in control stand. and Redsea cover to keep jawfish from becoming dog food. Current Inhabitants: 2 warrior baby clowns (ocellaris) (RIP Death and Destuction) Lawn mower blenny Leopard wrasse Coral Beauty 2 pajama cardinals Aiptasia eating File fish (name is alie) Brittle star 1 Urchin All the Aipatsia. and 4 lost apparently on strike berghias. CUC: Snails, hermits, 2 RBTA Down the road Plans: Add backlight to controls display that changes color based on Apex error alerts, Webcam to apex fusion feed phyto farm in garage Phyto chiller/doser Actual Continous duty periastatic. Full water chem tests (ICP or equivalent) Blue Spotted Jawfish Purple dartfish Buy more(all the) Frags 🙂
