Hi everyone, I've started a new build, and have decided to document it in this journal so that you might follow along (if you're interested). Background: I used to have a wonderful tiny mixed reef picotank for the last few months which brought me much joy. Unfortunately, 2.6G of volume wasn't enough to grow out all my corals, and I did add more than 60+ frags in that little tank. Eventually, I decided upgrading was the best solution. I needed a tank that wasn't too large that it would become a burden doing WCs, but not too small that it didn't have enough space to accommodate all the corals either. I settled on a 10G+ tank - it was roomy enough to meet my requirements, and most importantly, be simple enough to WC every week. I used the Tank Transfer Method (TTM) to upgrade, and used established cured LR (~5-years-old) from older systems as a biofilter. Only the LS was new, but I seeded it with a small cup of LS from my picoreef. The new nano is now located in my bedroom, and the temp. dips down to as low as 25'C (night) and as high as 30'C (very hot afternoons). The swing seems wild, but my pico operated under the same temp. range (more or less), and so far the animals didn't have any issues with the temp. Hi, I’m new here, coming from the freshwater side of things. 1st post on nano-reef but I’ve been creeping behind the scenes for a while, soaking it all in, research, research, so much more research. But I’m finally here, got my first salt water tank set up and cycling! Guess what ? It’s a super original tank... no it’s Fluval Evo 13.5, would have rather started with something like a 40 breeder but space and money are tight for that scale, it’s definitely size down but the ease of the Evo is what appealed to me. I know there’s literally 100+ of these threads, but I kinda kicked myself for not starting one when I set up my freshwater tank. So here it is: - AI prime HD -stock pump -VCA Random flow generator -hydor Koralia 240 powerhead -cobalt neo therm 50w heater -inkbird temp controller ITS-308S -XP Aqua duetto ATO -diy eggcrate basket for chamber 1 running filter floss, and a bag of seachem matrix Got about 12lb of the CaribSea life rock and 10lbs of their Fiji sand. the plan is to have a clownfish, a watchman goby and maybe down the line a third fish (purple firefish) and some cuc (trochus, nassirius, cerith, and emerald crab, might add a skunk cleaner or red shrimp but keeping it to two fish) and obviously add some coral down the line, can’t wait to add more colour and movement to this tank! Hello fellow Reef enthusiasts. I am the proud owner of a 32 gallon Coralife Biocube which I've had for almost 3 years. I need a little help in identifying the mushrooms in this picture. I know that the big green ones and the reddish ones with the green eyes are palythoa mushrooms, but I don't know what kind exactly. Can one of you experts please help me out? Also, can anyone identify the flat, bumpy mushrooms? Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi everyone, I've decided to start a journal for my third tank - a tiny 2.6G picoreef with some vicious monsters from the deep! Background: This tank was originally set up to meet the O.S.P.R.C. organized last year by NR. However, I kept battling a persistent flatworm issue which resulted in a loss of livestock and motivation in general. It served as a betta tank for a short while, but now that I've moved my betta into a better/larger tank, I've decided to re-start this tiny aquarium as a picoreef. Most of the corals added to this tank was done via an emergency TTM, because I ran into some really nasty temp. issues with my nanoreef in the library (the water spiked up to 33'C ) and this was my last-ditch effort to save whatever I could. The pico is located in my bedroom, which is currently the coolest spot in the house, and the average temp. is between 26'C (night) and 29'C (very hot days). The TTM went over quite smoothly so far, but I didn't have any extra sand when the tank was re-set, so I went barebottom for the time being. This past Friday (26th) I bought two ricordea florida frags. One has opened and is happy as can be, the other is still closed up. Should I be worried, or should I give it some more time? My tanks parameters: Salinity: 1.026 S.G PH: 8.2 Ammonia: 0.00 PPM Nitrite: 0.00 PPM Nitrate: 10 PPM

Just looked in my tank, and all my corals are pouting. What do you guys do when you see something like this? I did a water change with nutri seawater (first time using it) 6 or so hours ago, but my corals don’t usually get this mad at me with water changes. I included a picture of my parameter chart for a reference. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!!

So I bought two Ricordea Florida mushrooms Friday. One of them is open and super happy the other still hasn’t opened. They’re on medium to low lighting and low flow. Do they just need more time? Salinity: 1.026 Ammonia: 0.00 ppm Nitrite: 0.00 ppm Nitrate: 10 ppm Doing my weekly water change today. Thanks!

I just got my first coral, it’s spotted mushroom from live aquaria. I’ve read their instructions on placement and water flow, but I’m wondering, how do I know if these corals are happy/doing well? How do I know if I should move them to a different place in the tank?

Hello guys, About two years ago, I picked up a green rhodactis mushroom from the reef store. As soon as I put it in my tank, it spread out very wide and became very colorful. I continued to love the coral, and it kept growing until it doubled in size and became as large as the palm of my hand. It kept on flourishing and growing like this for about a year. Then, I noticed it wasn't coming out as much and I took some observations and did some research and found out that it was going to split, and it did. So then there were two mushrooms, but it just continued to go downhill from there. They shrank very gradually and lost their color, but I figured it was just a small phase and did nothing about it. Now, a year later, one of them has disintegrated, and I have one left about the size of a penny. It's not colorful anymore. I miss how it was two years ago 😭 Water parameters have not drastically changed at all, I just don't know what's wrong. Please help

Equipment: -water pump upgraded to AQ600 (doubled flow to ~160 GPH) -50W heater -light upgraded to Current Orbit IC LED LOOP system (21 Watts, 36 LEDS) Stock: ~3.5 lbs of live rock -Clown -CUC of 4 hermits -GSP -mushroom -Zoa’s -devils hand leather -supplemental phytoplankton -found what looks like a tulip anemone wondering if I should get rid of it asap Filter: -sponge filter -Phosgaurd -activated carbon -ceramic filter rings Notes: -Experimenting with cheato in the display, because it’s a small system with no fuge I thought if I could keep it contained it may act as a nutrient sink. -20-50% water changes weekly -Want an anemone, not sure what kind, wondering if I’ll need a wavemaker before I can keep one healthy -temp stays around 78-79, salinity 1.024, I have yet to get a test kit (next on the list), but water changes seem to keep everything running smoothly so far. -New light made a huge difference in pics -pics are from March 4-August 6, 2018 -Any advice is appreciated

So today is finally here, today I move from the original Pico to the new one. I figured I would start a new journal and detail it from now as well as go into more detail about the setup, what was built and what was bought. FTS 3/14/18 FTS 10/8/17 More to come... Set up consists of : -2 X 2.5 gallon aquariums (Total tank volume after rock and media displacement is roughly 3 gallons) -Roughly 5lbs of live rock -256gph pond pump with two outlets - one up top for surface tension, one lower for flow through middle of tank -Diy led, 4 blue, 6 royal blue, 4 warm white and 3 cool whites on 3 channels powered by laptop power supplies and dc motor dimmers. -LEDs are 3 w, 3v ordered off ebay, non branded -Tank was drilled with a dremel and Bulkheads are made from male and female pvc adapters (After tank was drilled and bulkheads were siliconed in I mixed and poured a two part epoxy resin about 1/4 inch thick to reinforce the glass and pcv) -Sump is a simple 2 chamber design, water flows through filter floss-chemipure-a box of MarinePure biofilter media-purigen-return pump -DIY ATO - Float switch connected to DC 12v relay which controls a 40gph pump in the reservoir -Temperature controller is a 5$ board bought off ebay, set temp and a fan will kick on when needed, it sits directly over the return side of the sump. OG Bounce mushroom that was fragged March 2nd, fully healed and attached and closes up at night now so must have a mouth. Also seems like more bubbles are starting to enlarge and color up. Loving this thing! -
Bought a frag of orange mushrooms yesterday (3 small on one small rock) two of them have white edges, is that bleaching or new growth? Parameters: Temp swings from 77-79 Ammonia-0 Nitrite-0 Nitrate-10 pH-8.2 opened up fine a few hours after acclimation. just the very edges are white Bleaching or Growth?

Was given this coral last week and I can’t figure out what it is. I think it’s a type of mushroom but not entirely sure. It’s doing well in my softie tank though.

So I came home and my fungia has a random red mushroom in its mouth. Will this hurt my fungia? Or should I just let nature take its course?

10/8/17 - Tank has been moved into a new setup, link to new journal is here: New Tank So here is my little Pico reef. Including the AC70 filter mod the tank is right around 2.7 gallons. When I first started it this was my first attempt at saltwater and the tank was a plain glass aquarium and a cheap 6 X 3watt led fixture I bought off ebay. I had to remove the optics because you could clearly see the blue and white light in the water. I knew when I started this I didn't want a tank with a light hanging high above it or I would never be happy. The LEDs are currently about 2 1/2"s above the water level, it works, the tiny zoa Frag I first added has grown considerably from 10-12 heads to over 30. One of the two hammer corals I first added is still there, the other was eaten by a peppermint shrimp. It of course was the more attractive of the two. The remaining one was also torn up pretty good but is slowly coming back. I spent days reading forums from all over the net, anything to do with picos and decided that like a lot of others I wanted the tank to look like a piece of furniture instead of a glass box full of water. So after some measurements and several bad cuts I had the basic frame work finished. I had to empty the tank into a bucket and then paint the back of the glass and attach the wood to the framework. Everything survived in the bucket for about a two days while I worked. Here are some pictures of the original tank and some variations of the rockwork that have changed over the past couple months. -
Hello all! I was wondering if I had to do anything in terms of maintenance for mushroom corals? I bought a mushroom rock about a month ago and the mushrooms on it have really grown and are covering most of the space on the rock (even overlapping one another), I was wondering if I should do anything, or can I just leave it as is?

Hello! So, I've been interested in biology in general from a pretty young age, I've had and still have various freshwater tanks since before middle school or so, and I'm going into my senior year of college now in San Diego(pretty moderate climate). A half a year ago or so I got the saltwater bug, and have been lurking on a bunch of forums and such learning about corals specifically. The final straw was when my boss, who has a 300 gallon reef tank at my work, told me that he would give me frags for free from pretty much any coral in his tank. So, I decided to make a reef tank, with the goal in mind that I'm a broke ass college student and so I'm going to spend as little money as possible. I've read all over the place about how the bigger the saltwater the tank, the easier it is to maintain, but that's obviously not 100% true as evidenced by everyone's experiences here. I decided to go for a challenge for my first saltwater tank by using a 2.5 gallon vase, and Maritza the Vase Reef was some of my primary inspiration. The only equipment running in it are an airline and a heater(and a battery powered thermometer to check the heaters not fritzing), as well as the light which is a I think 10watt compact flourescent 50/50 bulb. My phone's super crappy right now, so I'm going to try and borrow someone else's for a little and then I will upload pictures. It has been running for probably four months or so now. The first month was rough but I attribute that to the fact that I used an old heater, it malfunctioned and basically turned everything to soup. Since then though I've been steadily adding more and more corals, sometimes 3 a week, sometimes I won't add any for a month. The only not coral livestock I put in there that didn't come with the live rock is a small hermit crab and a bumpy red crab I took from the tidepools(sshhhhhhh). The only coral deaths I've had have been mushrooms which weren't able to attach high enough and were pulled into the bumpy crabs lair and eaten, and a small stock of pulsing Xenia which shriveled up over the course of a month or so. All the corals I have now are growing or at least static in their growth and don't seem unhealthy. I've heard that pulsing Xenia actually like slightly higher nitrate and phosphate levels, and so that's why I think they died, because my maintenance consists of weekly 90-100% water changes/glass scrubbing as well as taking the main rock out and scrubbing algae and detritus off with a toothbrush. I do the huge water changes because the tank is so small, and I also put quite a bit of reef roids into the tank the day before I clean it and change the water. Another thing which is fairly unconventional, but I haven't tested my water in any way since starting the tank. I rely on the fact that I buy premixed water from a reputable store and change basically all my water out with fresh water with the right parameters. Yes I still top off with RO/DI water from evaporation, I just keep the water level consistent though instead of using a refractometer. Only reason I don't test is because I'm on a tight budget. I have a feather worm in there and I've heard that they are VERY sensitive to water conditions and so I just make sure he's doing good and all is well. I'll try and upload pictures later today!
