introduction (10/28/23): hey everyone I wanted to share my progress on transferring my current 29g macroalgae tank to a newly empty 40 gallon breeder. I'm excited to do this because I feel like I will be able to keep so many more macros in the 40 than in the 29. The 29g is challenging to aquascape because of its odd vertical and skinny dimensions. I've been in the hobby for years and used to work as an aquarium maintenance tech in Dallas. I'd be happy to trade/purchase any rare macroalgae from anyone in the area. I've personally kept and set up freshwater planted tanks, nano reefs, and a few macroalgae tanks (I like to call them lagoons). I was a bit torn between setting this new 40g as a legit coral-dominant reef tank, but I think I will stick to my lagoon and keep macros and a few soft corals. I really like that these kinds of tanks are low maintenance but still look great and colorful. Plus the macros help keep the water clean. substrate choice: adding crushed coral with sand? I wanted to do a small layer of some sort of miracle mud at the bottom before adding the aragonite sand, but that stuff is so expensive I decided to just stick with sand. I did want to experiment with mixing substrates though. I bought some Caribsea crushed coral aragonite. It looks like this: I've read some forums posts just now encouraging people NOT to mix sand and crushed coral... They say it the sand will eventually settle below the CC... I have an active pistol shrimp, so I'm wondering if that won't be an issue due to the constant mixing of the substrate. I'm still contemplating mixing them just to have some more variety to the sandbed. I wish the CC had those little red Tubipora (red pipe organ coral) pieces in it! Here are some photos of my current 29g lagoon from various stages in time! Right after set-up in Spring 2021: After some growth! I was lucky that some hobbyists in the DFW area offered me some various macros to get the tank started right 👍 After moving it downstairs: After moving to a new city. I got a rose bubble tip anemone from Aquashella, which ended up eating my cleaner shrimp.. I also let the Caulerpa grow so much it shaded out the dragon's breath, which has completely vanished. I regret giving so dragons breath away when it grew prolifically! Additionally, during the move of the tank, I lost my Firefish and Bangai Cardinalfish that I've had since I set the tank up originally over 2 years ago... My buddy that helped me move the tank was a little too quick in transferring the fish into the tank after setting it up. The temp of the water was too cold and they instantly got shocked and died pretty much instantly. It was pretty tough to see that when they were still perfectly fine in the containers before that.. Anyways... Oh and I got a rose bubble tip anemone from Aquashella, which ended up eating my cleaner shrimp. Since then, one of my two LED bars went out, and instead of replacing it I figured I'd wait to transfer to the 40g. Hey all! I'd like to start a discussion with those of you who have had success or NO success using a freshwater set-up for a nano tank. This is a controversial topic, for sure, but I want to build a sparse, Japanese inspired tank that has no visible equipment with macros, gorgonians, a few softies, and maybe an LPS or two. I have a build thread on R2R which I will probably also transfer here since I think the audience is more appropriate: R2R build thread But, my plan is: UNS 90L 21 g ONF Flat One Blue/White 36" light UNS 90U wooden stand OASE Biomaster 600 or 850 Thermo canister (heater and prefilter integrated into the unit) (600 model = 350GPH max flow | 800 model = 400gph max flow) Algae reactor (if needed - plumbed inline after the canister) Dosing pump for ATO Lily pipes for inflow and outflow w/ surface skimmer Acrylic U-pipes for ATO I'd like to do this without a powerhead if possible Here's what I'm interested in discussing: 1. Your stories of success or failure 2. Pros and cons of the set up 3. Things I can do to optimize it. Specific canister size question: 1. I believe getting an oversized canister is the best bet, and I've been told I need to go with at least the Oase biomaster 600, but I'm wondering if going all the way up to the 850 would help with flow, filtration, and add 10% extra water? Since I want to do this without power heads if possible, would 400GPH from the 850 work with lily pipes? Would it be enough flow? It is not a DC pump so you add valves to adjust.

Hey all,My name is John (Aka Slice of the Sea Reef) and this is going to be my build thread for my Innovative Marine 25 Gallon Lagoon Tank. I am going for a more natural reef under white lights, and am going to be adding macroalgae and some other soft corals overtime. I also am looking at getting a few hermits and snails as well.I will likely try and update this minimum weekly with at least a FTS if nothing else. Hello NR. I'm new here, after coming across a 2015 TOTM featuring a macro/coral tank. It's very close to what I was envisioning. I previously had a 55 gallon planted freshwater tank with shrimps and snails and rummy nose tetras. The things I loved about freshwater is the diversity of plants and the seen and unseen organisms and tank equipment that work together to drive the aquarium ecology. Flash forward a few years and now I'm looking at setting up a 20 or 30 gallon saltwater tank with two clown fish (Percula) and shrimps. I'm not really interested in corals, and I was at first kinda disappointed by the options for saltwater plants. But after looking at some of the pictures on NR, I'm excited about macro algae! I think I'd like to eventually end up with a 2-clown and a couple shrimp/snail tank with some easy macro algae that can thrive on moderate lighting. I'm currently browsing the forum for affordable lights that might work for rimless tanks. Speaking of rimless tanks, I'm looking at rimless partly for better quality glass for viewing. I'm open to making a small sump in the cabinet, especially for a 30 gallon so I have the option of growing Chaeto and copepods in a sump (ecology!). One of the things that kinda turn me off corals is a lot of the coral tanks I see are so oddly lighted, very blue. I want natural looking lighting that shows off the reds on clowns and shrimp, and maybe macro tank lighting is more compatible with that goal. I'm currently floating in a sea of info on rimless tank brands and lights. Any pointers would be appreciated! Thanks to all for sharing so much info already on this forum. Jason

I'm planning on starting a dwarf seahorse tank. Its prob going to be about 2.5-6 gallons, haven't found a tank yet. I am curious about tankmates and coral compatibility. I need ways to kill hydroids. Maybe something to eat it? I know you can use some meds but i have very limited access to that bcs of my country's restrictions. Its not going to be a pure biotope Here is the probable stocking list. 1 bumble bee snail 1 mexican turbo 2 nassaurius vibex 3-5 pairs of dwarfs 2 blue stripe pipefish??? Photosynthetic gorgonians photosynthetic sponges (species reccomendations?) dwarf cerith snails 3 scarlet hermits 5 sexy shrimp live Copepods live Brine shrimp live rotifers live mysis (if i can get these) saltwater ghost (if i can get these) Ideas and tips please!!!

Current FTS 8/2 7/2019: Past FTS pics: 7/2018 12/2018 Finally decided to start a tank journal. The tank is only 2 years old as of 2018. JBJ 28 stock equipment: 2x 266gph Accela return pumps Stock 89w LED Ai Prime HD media basket (a small amt of carbon & large micron sponge pad) Significant obstacles faced: 2016 Dinos -- had to scratch tank 2016 Moved tank to new house 2017 Heavy metal contamination (anchors for macro algae was composed of lead) 2017 Nitrate accumulation and nuisance algae from lack of maintenance 2018 Cyano outbreak 2018 Total light failure This tank was rebooted in May 2018: Small fan added to help cool down hood & installed Nest to adjust room air to 73 F when lights turn on (tank avg temp 82 80) Upgraded flow from a Koralia Evo 750 to a Icecap 1K Gyre Added significant amount of new live rock Added an Aquamaxx HOB 1.5 (slightly modified plumbing so I could prop hood open) Started testing alk, cal, and mag (dose seachem manually twice once a week if needed) - targets are 8 dkh, 420 cal, 1350 mag Performed a sand rinse on 95% of substrate and vacuumed out chambers. Change 10% weekly with Red Sea PRO/Instant Ocean/Tropic Marin @ 1.024 SPG (25% as it stabilized [about 2 months]) Added a variety of copepods and installed a micro refugium in tank. So... This wasn't exactly planned, but now I have saltwater again! After about 3 years of being out of the hobby, I'm back. When a friend offered me his Evo 13.5 for 100 bucks fully set up I couldn't say no! It arrived tonight, with a minor gha infestation and looking kinda bad. The stock pump apparently kicked it unless I'm doing something wrong, and I also might have dropped the SG to 1.022 after it was at 1.029. Oops. So tomorrow it looks like I'll be running to the LFS to pick up a new pump and saltwater. Tank currently has an emerald crab, a hermit of some sort, a damsel of some sort and a rainsford goby which was looking bad when it got to my house. Also, a partially dead gorg and some snails. I put a maxijet 1200 on it for now (good grief, it's horribly noisy!).

Want to 'upgrade at the back system' in 12 gal 48 litre nano cube

Hi Everyone, Looking to update the back of my nano 12 gal- 48 lite tank. I have a river reef all in one system. Been up for 2 1/2 years. Currently housing 2 montiporas, 1hammer head, xiena, zoanthids, Green star polys. Hope to eventually get a clam and a Trachyphyllia geoffroyi ,Challice coral I have recently removed the lid and got myself an AI prime light. I have a small eheim 350 skimmer which fails every now and then... Have coarse sponge, phosphate remover bag, carbon bag, ceramic cubes to hold bacteroa. - CAN I REMOVE ALL OF THIS IS IT NECESSARY ??? Dont like having to keep buying thing to replace like this.. Been thinking about changing to the following: I have 4 square sections at the back (Have phosphate at 0.50 ) Refugium- To grow Green hair algae - If i do can anyone recommend a little flat led strip to put over so it doesn't stick up out of my tank ?What bulb? How do i maintain when it grows? Do i just trim it when it grows etc for maintenance Kalwasser reactor - I have a 48 litre tank, i have looked at other conversations saying for a small tank this could be dangerous as such small doses are needed etc Automatic top off ??- Do i need one really? Since removing the lid i now add fresh ro water once a week. Protein skimmer ? Previously using a eheim 350 as had a hood on the tank but now removed lid so can upgrade to hang on the back if anyone know of a small skimmer which could fit this tank Thank you Any advice would be great -
