Hi everyone, I've started a new build, and have decided to document it in this journal so that you might follow along (if you're interested). Background: I used to have a wonderful tiny mixed reef picotank for the last few months which brought me much joy. Unfortunately, 2.6G of volume wasn't enough to grow out all my corals, and I did add more than 60+ frags in that little tank. Eventually, I decided upgrading was the best solution. I needed a tank that wasn't too large that it would become a burden doing WCs, but not too small that it didn't have enough space to accommodate all the corals either. I settled on a 10G+ tank - it was roomy enough to meet my requirements, and most importantly, be simple enough to WC every week. I used the Tank Transfer Method (TTM) to upgrade, and used established cured LR (~5-years-old) from older systems as a biofilter. Only the LS was new, but I seeded it with a small cup of LS from my picoreef. The new nano is now located in my bedroom, and the temp. dips down to as low as 25'C (night) and as high as 30'C (very hot afternoons). The swing seems wild, but my pico operated under the same temp. range (more or less), and so far the animals didn't have any issues with the temp. December 1st started a new tank, I’m going to catch-up the journal a little at a time! To start my Rock and sand where in tank prior to the scape cycling for a month or maybe little longer. After the scape I’ll be adding copepods, a fish or two each week and corals pretty quickly. It’s going to be almost an insta tank. P.S. if your new to the hobby then don’t try this at home. Parameters Alk 6.8 - 7.5 Ca 400 - 430 Mg 1400 - 1440 NO3 10 - 20 PO4 0.03 - 0.1 PH 7.9 - 8.3 Dosing Daily 425ml full strength kalk (Seachem) dripped 24/7 with Versa 1.8ml Foundation B (Liquid) 1.4ml Foundation A (Liquid) 1ml Foundation C (Liquid) 1.3ml NOPOX We live in a high-rise condo, and this particular combination gets us to a pH We can live with in the cold Canadian winter, and a great pH the rest of the year when we can open the windows. The dosing is all spread out over 24h. Live Phyto - 5ml every 2-3 days 10ml Eco Balance every 3-4 weeks The Story So Far This tank was started November 2021. It was started with Stax rocks, but was rescaped by my wife with LifeRock in May. That rock was run in a bucket of heated saltwater for 5 weeks, with 1tsp Aquaforest Life Source dosed weekly. The lid was loosely on to keep light to a minimum. We’ve had 0 algae/cyano/dino issues doing it this way. The rocks were replaced 50% at a time, 4 weeks apart. Live stock was added in the following order, after cycling for 4 weeks, and testing 0 Ammonia and 0 Nitrite. Clowns Mushrooms 6 each, hermits, nasarius snails, trochus snails Various LPS (some we kept, some didn’t make it) Royal Gramma Toadstool Goby Pistol Pair More mixed hermits and snails Montipora Acropora More mixed hermits and snails This was spread evenly across 12 months. Our philosophy is largely influenced by Nicholas Marion @Aqua Splendor. Build a full ecosystem, from phyto, to micro and macro grazers. Create habitats for the animals, adjust what you do in response to the animals in your care. For instance, we feed many foods that everything can eat. Pretty much everything eats the powdered food, phyto, oyster feast, and tiny bits of LRS. The goby is well fed now.The fish eat anything large enough to see. We like a nice diversity of invertebrates, and the microscopic food keeps them thriving. As we notice fewer inverts, we replenish. As there aren’t any massively useful nano fish, we think a healthy and thriving crew of inverts is a necessity in a nano tank That said, in the first year here are the bummers & battles. Cyano (Best Fix: just go straight to a chemiclean treatment, dose bacteria weekly for a month afterward) LCA Dinos (Best Fix: Sponge Excel 3 drops every 4 days, 5ml live phyto every other day, Tisbe or other pods, 10ml Ecobalance weekly. Don’t clean your glass. You are trying to outcompete it with anything - cyano, diatoms, GHA are all easy by comparison. Skip the blackouts and higher temps, they do nothing towards the solution and add stress to the already stressed system. Run nutrients 100:1 eg Nitrates 30 Phosphates 0.3, neither should be 0. Identifying strain of ydinoflagellates is critical to solving the problem. I highly recommend Mack’s Dino support group on Facebook. They are THE dino solvers, just follow the advice, it’s literally the best around.) Diatoms (Best Fix: Pods & Live phyto.) GHA (Best Fix: get nutrients in line, 100:1 N:P eg 30:0.3. Manual removal, increase snail and crab numbers by diversity and amount.) 3 Fancy mushrooms disappeared An Australian and an Indonesian torch coral started to fight, and the Indonesian lost. The Australian one died six weeks later. Several micromusa never got comfy and eventually died. A chalice and cyphastrea frag didn’t make it. Several Montipora frags were tossed after Montipora Nudibranch eggs were spotted on the frag rack (why you should monitor frags on a rack for a few weeks before placement). Several acros stripped as the chemistry wasn’t yet stable enough. Larger (maybe double the price) encrusted Acropora frags improve success approximately 90%. 20G is too small to nurse tiny frags until you get some SPS in there and your dosing is dialed in. What Would We Do Differently Start with Life rock and dose 1 teaspoon of LifeSource mud for the first 10 weeks that the tank is wet with rock in it, including during the cycle. Add two bottles of pods and dose a couple of mls of live phyto every few days and get them reproducing after adding the first fish. Start dripping Kalk much earlier on, even if it’s a very mild solution. Upping the saturation as the demand from LPS slowly climbs. Do this slowly, go by Alk tests. Get a Hanna checker, you’ll be testing Alk weekly if not daily. Run high alk & calcium while only softies to encourage coralline. Our Reefing Story We got into reeefing shortly after my diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 2006. Prior to that I was a software engineer, my disability was enough to take me out of the workforce however. We were immediately addicted. A weekly LFS trip minimum. That first tank was taken down within a year. Although largely a success, we hadn’t anticipated how much of a roller coaster MS would be. Fast forward to 2019, I am now in a wheelchair and have plenty of time to dedicate to something. We started a FOWLR in a BioCube 16. It eventually got overrun with algae, and with the pandemic keeping us home… We had never lost our love of reef tanks and had contemplated numerous times starting another reef. So last fall we started up the Innovative Marine Nuvo 20. We agreed to split the duties. I’d handle all the research, the chemistry, monitoring, dosing, anything that didn’t need fine motor skill. She’d handle all the stuff that did, and all the heavy lifting, and we’d automate as much as we could as budget allowed. So while there is a great deal of automation, you can think of it as accessibility. It started with an AI Prime HD, but that got switched for a Radion XR15 pro when we started to go for SPS. Then we added the Reefbrite strips. We tried a small refugium in one of the back chambers, that turned out to largely be useless. After the rescape we decided to put everything on inch and a quarter frag discs and plugs, Securing them to the rock with a glue - epoxy - glue sandwich. This makes them easy to remove with bone cutters. Eventually you have a series of flat platforms of epoxy that you can just move the Frag discs between as you learn what corals like it where. This is mostly for the SPS so we can easily move them around without drilling the rock. Our set up is pretty dialled in at the moment. Input matches export, The ecosystem is stable to a large degree. ~~FOR THE CURRENT BUILD SKIP TO PAGE 3~~ *Clears Throat* Hello. Never thought that I would be here with another build, but alas, here we are. Over the past few months I have all but gotten out of the hobby. Between renovating our living room, and then overhauling the yard I have had no time to take care of a tank, let alone think about them. I guess like a lot of things in life this hobby ebbs and flows for me and balancing reef tanks with a few other interests has proven difficult if not impossible recently. To add insult to injury I have had to sell off most of my hobby things to help fund the ever hungry academic adventure that I am apart of. With the end of summer on the horizon, though, things have started to slow down a little and it was my wife who mentioned that a particular bookshelf would look nice with a reef tank to fill the space. Haha I think she missed having a reef tank more than I did. Well, I have to admit I didn't sell ALL of my reefing stuff (come on now 😉), and I soon found myself pulling out a gently used Lifegard Aquatics 6 gallon bookshelf aquarium out of storage. It took some work with a razor to scrape off all of the old crusties from once upon a time when it was a planted aquarium, but it cleaned up pretty nice. In a perfect world I wouldn't mind hanging some high end lighting and really going to town on this little tank, wouldn't we all, but in the process of paying for school I had to sell my wallet as well, so I guess we're going for broke with this one. I did however have a few pieces here and there and a hardscape took shape. I usually use Aquamaxx's (RIP MarineDepot) reef welder to glue rocks together, but given the delicate nature of the scape I was trying to achieve it really looked tacky so I switched to just plain old superglue which worked well still. I decided to only add a minimal* layer of "standard grade" Caribsea sand (*all I had). I want to go pretty minimalistic on equipment as well as looks with this tank so between a light, a heater and small wavemaker that will be the only tech powering this tank. I placed an order for an inexpensive Nicrew LED. Since this tank is so shallow, I figured I can get away with a less powerful lighting setup (and save some coin too). Filtration will be taken care of by the rock and sand as well as water changes. I do expect some hiccups in trying to find a groove with this tank, given how low tech it will be, but it shouldn't be too hard to upkeep (<famous last words ha!). I have a few housekeeping things to do; wire management and hanging the light when it arrives. And as per tradition, a mixed reef seems proper here. We also had a friend open a new shop just a few blocks away so some perusing might occur soon. I am starting this journal for my Innovative Marine 25 Gallon Lagoon Pro. I did not buy this new. In fact, I did not pay anything for it. I received it from a friend who wants to travel more. When I picked it up it was being ran as a FOWLR with a few inverts. The glass was heavy covered with coraline algae. I knew there would be a little work to get it looking like new again. A couple hours of vinegar in a spray bottle and a scraper and I could see some progress and potential. I removed the old sand and spent some time meticulously cleaning up the back chambers of this All In One. I did keep the liverock, it consisted of about a dozen smaller pieces. I used some Nyos reef cement to bond some of these pieces of liverock together into a small three branched structure. I added a Tunze magnetic frag rock holder to the back glass. I figured the rock holder would blend in better then traditional frag racks. My substrate is a mix of Carib Sea special reef and a small amount of Carib Sea Hawaiian black sand. The aquarium is filled and currently cycling. I plan to list equipment and livestock acquisitions in future posts.

Started this tank up late July of last year. It's a 27 gallon. Just recovering from a cyano outbreak and the zoa's are doing great. Fish stocking Occe clown Bangai Cardinal Royal Gramma I do a once a month water change and try to feed twice a day. I know it's not clean but it gives me a lot of enjoyment to see the changes and progress over time. I am running a hob filter with chemipure blue, filter media and sponges. One jebao slw10 and a nicrew 30watt light (I'm sure I'm under light for my tank but the rim has caused me issues and this light has worked). I think I am going to add my spare nicrew bar light just to give my corals a little extra light.

Journal Goals: Starting this journal now in the hopes of garnering advice/opinions prior to even setting up. Really want to do this in-depth for record keeping and hopefully help out other newbies! Tank/Equipment: -Red Sea Max Nano w/stand and all included equipment (skimmer, ATO, Sock, Carbon, Pump) -Helio dual 100w heaters (went with the dual for redundancy should one fail) -1 EcoTech MP10 (pricey I know but looking ahead equipment wise honesty and believe in cry over price over cry over failure) -CaribSea Arag-Alive Sand -CaribSea Life Rock -Red Sea Coral Pro Salt -Various Red Sea Test Kits Tank Overarching Goals: The overall goal for this tank is to become an LPS and Softy tank. Really want to establish a nice little Lords garden w/a small Zoa island. Also plan to have an Elegance once the tank is established. This will be my first reef tank so I really look at this as an opportunity to learn. Mistakes will be made and I truly hope this community of experienced reefers will call me out on bad decisions as I go! Specific Stocking Goals: Fish: Once Cycled; 2x Ocellaris Clownfish After 2 week steady parameters; 1x Six-Line Wrasse 1x Small sand sifting goby Inverts: 1x Peppermint or Fire Shrimp 1 or 2 Nasarius Snails Coral: Once fish and tank are established (gauging a month or so but will base on overall parameters); Various Lords Zoas on island Elegance Tentacled Toadstool Duncan Candy coral Maybe red Xenia (will decide this at later date due to their rapid growth status) Feel free to offer other suggestions! Cycle Plan: Once aquascaped and sand/water (using Red Sea salt) added I plan to follow the Dr. Tim’s fishless cycle. Dosing ammonia and then the One and Only. Test kits will all be in, and tank will be tested regularly until initial cycle completed. Once this is done the initial fish will be introduced gradually. I also plan to dose Brightwell Clean during this period to try and prevent/combat any algae blooms that may arise (though I understand this isn’t a guaranteed way to avoid them. I am prepared for any that may come. Mainly trying this based on BRS advice). After the tank has had time to settle in I will turn the lights on, look to start adding coral after a few weeks! I am currently trying to setup a 20G long reef tank. I want to have the tank FULL of lps such as torches, hammers, and frogspawn but I can't go without an anemone. I've had my 10g for about 2 and a half years and want something better. I am mainly contemplating between an AI Prime HD or a pair of Kessil A80 for lighting. Also, what would you recommend for a filter? It will be sitting on a breakfast bar as the center of attention. I wouldn't mind a small canister as long as it isn't really loud. I don't want to skimp but I don't want to be unreasonable. I also don't know where to start for a power head. Seems like everything is overpowered for a 20g. What other equipment/hardware would you recommend? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Jumped back into the hobby a few months ago with a 20 long. Didn't last long, ready for an upgrade. My name is Cory, I live on the Central Coast, Morro Bay. Things I enjoy are long walks on the beach with Penny (my dog), riding my 66' ironhead and spicy ramen Don't really have a specific direction I'm going for with this tank but mostly to just learn and enjoy the coral and fish that would make a good addition. Mixed reef with everything being carried over from the 20 gallon. I would love to grow some sps colonies down the line. FTS: Start and post date 9/5/2021 Hello all. I used to frequent these halls years ago. At some point Ill put a link in here to my old aquarium, but I dont even recall what name I used. Nothing special, but definitely put a lot of time and care into it. Update, found it: Well..my floor is wet again after years off. This time I'm going simple. The scape is 2 rocks....and that's it... The plan is to have a Euphyllia rock, and a star polyp rock. The GSP rock has some pretty large holes for a blenny or more to peak out from. I may get a couple firefish, but not sure yet. Equipment is also simple: - NUVO AIO 20 (not peninsula) - Eheim 75 - stock pump (may change..need to find source of vibration) - MP10W that still works! - In Tank floss holder - Kessil A150W Ocean Blue This tank will be called Sea of Stars, named for the GSP, but also after some lyrics from a band called Lord Huron. I grew up by the ocean and first fell in love with tropical fish & corals when I got scuba certified in Indonesia circa 2000. Since then I’ve done many dives around the world and find myself more interested in biodiverse macro reef-scapes than shipwrecks and cageless bull shark feedings. Also, I’m a photo enthusiast and art aficionado, which I aim to incorporate into my reef keeping. My wife gifted me my first tank about 4 years ago (a 6-gallon JBJ AOI), and pretty sure it’s her biggest regret of our long-standing relationship. I'm now about 1 year into the current setup. VISION: If I were shrunk down to be a little 2 inch scuba diver and my wife threw me into my tank, I want to be surrounded by colors, contrasts, textures, movement, and dimension. I’ll want to swim down, up, around, through, under, and over copious amounts of corals, and be accompanied by a few fish friends that will join me without fearing they’ll bully or eat me. OBJECTIVES: Over the next 12 months, I’ll try to post progress updates every 1-2 weeks. Additionally, I’ll try to engage you all into helping me fill in the holes with new coral suggestions. Since I like to go to the local LFS’s frequently, maybe together we can make this an interactive team effort - although, let me try not to get ahead of myself here. So for now I’ll share some relevant pics and focus on following through with a 2nd post sometime soon. P.S. I have a lot of bad habits to work on... - hands in the tank frequently - impatiently making changes, expecting expedited results - providing poor instructions for friends to care for tank while on vacation - overfeeding and then underfeeding - vindictively taking vengeance on hungry hermits that snatch food from feeding acans

Look at my hammer coral in the bottom center of tank. Withdrawing. Was much bigger. Is this a potential problem with too much leather corals near my LPS? It's been going down hill for a week or 2. Parameters: Nitrates = 5 ppm Phosphate = 0.03 ppm Calcium = 460 dkh hardness = 8 ph = 8.2 Salinity = 1.025 Temp 78 This is a 20 gallon long tank. The tank is about 1 year old. If not lps/leather incompatibility, what could it be??? Thanks much for you help.

My tank has been already 'built', however I thought I would try to share photos of how it matures, even if it is only for my own entertainment. Having previously fallen in love with the freshwater hobby over a year ago, I'm not particularly experienced, however I like to think I've learnt a lot since starting. I was first attracted to the saltwater hobby over a year ago, when I discovered the first marine lfs where I live. I instantly fell in love with the 'more colourful' fish, and I thought that corals would certainly be far too hard! Fast forward to March this year, and being in Australia, I had been spending a lot of time at home. Eventually my girlfriend allowed me to get a second tank if that was what I kept to. I'm proud to say its stayed at two tanks for the time being! In April, I picked the Waterbox 10 at my local lfs because I liked the cube shape, and the AIO nature of it, and I thought it would be a reasonable place to start in the saltwater hobby. After consulting my lfs, I bought everything that was needed, setting it up with: - 5 kgs Caribsea Dry Rock Arches, - ~6 kgs Course Aragonite Sand, - AI Prime 16HD with Flex Arm Then what followed was an extremely frustrating process of waiting. I had prepared myself for approximately a month of cycling, and my ammonia was at 0 after approximately 3 weeks, but the Red Sea test kit showed nitrite at the maximal 1, with nitrates often being 5-10. This led me to believe I couldn't start until I had 0 nitrate due to my lfs and my experience in freshwater. I then was curious about what could possibly be causing this, and I discovered my rocks were leaching small amounts of ammonia, and reasonable amounts of nitrite, by way of an experiment. I did this by performing an experiment with a control, with the rocks separately in buckets of water, and with the sand again in separate water. The rocks had 0.25 ammonia each and 0.5 nitrite each after 2 days. I have no explanation for how this occurred. (I'm a science student, can you tell?) I eventually came upon information that nitrite is not toxic to marine life in low levels around July, after buying and using so much bottle bac! However being cautious I waited it out, hoping my nitrite would reduce. Finally I bit the bullet and bought a basic ocellaris clownfish. Thankfully, all was well for about a week, with no signs of stress, and so I wanted to get 'it' a friend. Whilst at the lfs I fell in love with a picasso percula clownfish, as well as a small green bta. I also grabbed a small clean up crew of turbos and hermits. Having researched the gbta previously, I know it was a dubious decision, however, is my tank mature after being dormant since April? Who knows? The gbta quite quickly settled in a location and to my surprise was extremely happy visually. A few days later the picasso percula then started hosting it! I then visited the lfs a couple weeks later, where my girlfriend had spotted a nem that she loved. So I figured when I returned I'd entertain her and see what nem it was. It was a 'rainbow' bubble tip, and when we returned to the lfs she pointed it out in their display. I asked about their availability, and they offered to sell that exact nem to me, as it had split! I had also hoped that given my clowns weren't paired they could have a nem each for the time being! Unfortunately the percula decided both nems were theirs, defending them both from the poor ocellaris. I'll leave the thread at that for now, I hope you enjoy it!

What’s up everybody! This is my first shot at a reef tank. When I set up this I originally wasn’t planning on posting it online or anything so I don’t have two many shots of the build and progress along the way. Started the tank a little under a year ago, but just last week I drained it, salvaged what livestock I could, put in new sand bed and aquascaping, and reconfigured my AIO filtration method. Been through a lot of trials and tribulations so far Equipment list: Tank: JBJ rimless 10-gallon AIO aquarium and stand Light: Nicrew 30W reef LED aquarium light 1st 1st filtration chamber: filter floss, chemipure blue, GFO 2nd chamber: (originally started out as a refugium) marine pure ceramic bioballs seeded with Micobacter7 3rd chamber: cheap heater I bought off Amazon, and the return pump that came with the JBJ tank (return pump intake set to ~50%) Live stock: hammers zoas mushrooms acans duncan blasto lobo favia clown pair Modifications: Added a random flow generator nozzle - best $20 I’ve spent on the tank! Background: This is an upgrade from my Fluval Spec V. I have always struggled with the rock being too big in the Fluval Spec V. It makes it very hard to clean the glass on each side so lots of algae build up. I also wanted to get a bigger tnak for the clown fish. This clown fish has been with me for over 2 years now and survived through 2 leaks, 1 move, and other mishaps. It is also a total bully so I can't put it into my Red Sea Reefer 350. When I first saw ReefBuilder feature the Fluval Evo 12, I knew it will be my next tank. The dimension fits perfectly wherethe Spec V is now and the rock will look great with more space on each side. There are some questionable design choices with the tank such as the black honeycomb at the top of the tank (which I razored off) and the AIO chamber allows a lot of detritus to build up in the first and second chamber. The stock lighting and pump are good only for softies and low light LPS. But overall, the tank itself is pretty decent for the price. I do like it comes with surface skimmer and the return nozzle is already split into two. In additional, the raised design is very modern. My vision for this tank is a very natural tank with gorgonians, LPS, zoas, acans, and ricordeas. I will get another fish or two, something that can put up with the clown.

Background So Tank was started in July, it all started with doing a water feature in the garden (a well with some goldfish), then a betta tank (aquaponics) for the office, then I came across the reef hobby, started googling galore, owned nothing and had every system dreamt up, i wanted to get a nano tank that would fit into my house with no upset and then if all went well and knew the hobby was for me, I would be able to upgrade down the line. I read an article, that was just spoke to me and it was based upon a book, so i found the book, bought it in hardcopy (the wife said was on the phone too much) and was locked in. Reef was gonna be definitely for me. I had a friend who was a long time fish enthusiast (tropical) and had just got into the saltwater game, FOWLER tank and then into corals and then sacked his tropical tank and upgraded to just one reef tank. Having a Reef Buddy has definitely made this journey even more enjoyable. So after reading the book, my brief was simple a nano tank that would fit on the table I already have, buy equipment which can be used in the next tank (modular etc) and hopefully i enjoy the hobby and if so upgrade to as big as tank I can (ie id love a 6ft peninsula with walk in room behind it, dividing the dining room and living room, but then id need a new house, most likely 200l, big enough tank but in scale with the room), and if i didn't well, well don't even need to finish the sentence. As its a great hobby! Goal Fully stocked stable Tank, once I Reach this target I will begin the journey all over again with most likely a 3ft sumped tank, then convince the wife we need a bigger house and its nothing to do with the fish.
