    IM 25 Gallon Lagoon

After a few impromptu stops by the local fish store and being out of the reefing world for about eight years, I am jumping back in! I previously had a 46 Gallon Bow Front Reef Tank and it was a great (yet frustrating) learning experience. During the three years that the tank was running, it turned into a flourishing reef that experienced its highs and lows. After heading off to college, maintenance took a turn and it unfortunately died out. Now that I have more time, I've decided to dip my toes back in the water and set up a smaller reef tank. Most of the big purchases have been made, but I am still waiting on the stand to arrive before everything gets set up. Let the wild ride begin, and as always, any comments or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. I’ve been lurking here since...2008? That can’t be right. I was, frankly, too intimidated by all of you incredibly talented humans to attempt a tank journal when I started my IM Nuvo 10g a couple of years ago, but since I woke up one morning last month and saw that my checking account had been stimulated, I figured I’d give it a go this time. Background My current tank is yet another @teenyreef inspired IM Nuvo Fusion 10g, and has been running in its current iteration for the past year and a half plus. It is perilously close to fully grown in - the coral have been skirmishing for some time now, and I fear a declaration of war from the Euphyllia is inevitable. I could start fragging and trading away corals...OR I could upgrade the tank. The stimulus check made this decision incredibly easy. I’m most proud of the frogspawn - grown out from two to eleven heads Goals Get more color in the tank - my current tank is very green and teal dominated. I’d like to get a better mix of harmonious colors, without going full cosmic bowling Start keeping SPS - to help with the above, I’m hoping to stock some Montipora and Leptoseris and will be dosing for the first time ever. I’ve gotten decent growth in the 10g by simply relying on water changes, but I’d like to take a more hands-on approach this time and challenge myself a bit more. Work on my photography - I have a decent amount of photography experience, but I’m simultaneously unhappy with my aquarium photos and too lazy to get the dslr out. I usually end up taking snapshots with my iPhone. I’m hoping that this journal will give me a reason to put the work in. In researching this tank upgrade, I came across @schgr.cube and @Pandy's tank journals, and found their work to be incredibly inspiring. Hopefully I can make some progress on this front!

  7. Hello everyone, Was hoping everyone could provide me with some tips and suggestions on a new 10 gallon build I want to do. Right now here is my plan: Tank: UNS 60S shallow aquarium (24x14x7) Light: Kessil A80 Rock: Stax and marco rock Heres where I need help. I’m stuck between filtration options. I would like to build a sump, but have never owned a tank with one, and don’t even know where to begin with overflows/drilling/plumbing let alone building the sump itself. Other things I am considering is using a canister filter and cleaning it often, or just an AC. I just love the clean look of this tank, and would like to be able to keep the filtration, heater and ato out of the view area if possible. Would like to keep the tank as close to looking “empty” looking as possible. I also would like a solution that won’t kill my wallet, however I know this hobby and am expecting it to at least get a beating. My stocking plan: bit of LPS/Softies 1 fish (either Azure Damsel OR a pygmy angel) 1 blood red fire shrimp I am attaching a picture of what the tank looks like, and the second picture is the aqua scape I want to follow. I basically want a shallow lagoon look, with lots of open sand areas. Essentially what I am asking is what would you guys do with this tank? How would you filter it? Any suggestions will be appreciated and the more detailed the better! thanks in advance!!

IM 25 Lagoon, Kessil A80 Tuna Blue

Hey everyone, I have an IM 25 lagoon, and a Kessil A80 Tuna Blue mounted light. I started with a small 10 gal and the light that I bought off of someone, then transferred the light and bio load to the new 25 Lagoon. My questions are 1. Is this light enough? 2. How high should this light be above the water line? 3. If anyone out there also has an A80 Tuna Blue, what are your cycles set at. I am not too concerned with anything, as the tank has been running great, and seems in really healthy condition (1 Ocellaris Clown, 1 canary blenny, 1 damsel, 1 conch, 1 bubble tip anemone, tons of spirorbid worms, some great corals, and a flame scallop [been alive for 6 months don't know how he's not dead]). Really, I just want to dial in the lighting now to make sure my coral growth is the best it can be. Any help would be awesome!

    Variant's Shallow Reef

I've been spending the last 6 months looking at some of the gorgeous tank builds here and now that my own tank build is taking off, I will introduce myself. I go by Variant on forums and I love good coffee, hiking, and my miniature schnauzer Mona. I travel frequently for work but will try my best to document my reef tank journey. I'm hoping to build a mixed but SPS dominated tank for my living room. Nothings set in stone so we'll see how things change over time. Sharbuckles Low Boy Lagoon

Well it’s time for a new tank build. Originally purchased to be a frag tank I picked up one of ZooMed’s Low Boy 50g. After perusing the TOTM’s I came across two sources of inspiration which have now changed the entire direction of the low boy. Those two sources of inspiration are as follows: AND Two absolutely beautiful and unique tanks. The Aquascape will be very similar to both tank builds above. Almost combining the two with some rocks above the water line with some mangroves as well. The low boy offers a certain set of challenges as it is only 10” tall. But the 48x24 footprint allows for really cool dimensions as far as scaping goes. As I mentioned, I originally purchased the tank to set up as a frag system so to please my better half there will be a large frag area in the sump. Equipment: 50g ZooMed Low Boy 75g DIY Sump/Frag Tank Sicce Syncra 3.0 Return Pump 2 Tunze Nanostream 6040’s Eshopps Eclipse S Overflow 2x250w halide with 2 T5HO (ReefBrite strips to replace t5’s later) Eheim Jager Heater Havent chose a skimmer yet, thinking maybe just a Tunze 9004. Tunze ATO Ive got about 75lbs of dry dead rock which I will be using for my scape. Will add about 40lbs of aragonite as well. Stocking plans will be a mix of macros and corals, softies and LPS mostly. Havent put much much thought into fish plans. A friend is building a simple 2x4 stand which I may sand and paint white. Simple and effective. It will be 48” high for optimal viewing of the tank. Pics of the build to come this week!

    Slatts' Lagoon 25

Hey guys, new to nano-reefs.com. Have almost 3 years experience now in the hobby. Starting up a new build thread as I am in the process of moving and have to downsize to a smaller tank. My current tank that will be decommissioned here in a very few short weeks is the 75g Deep Blue Edge Rimless mixed reef drilled with the Synergy Reef 16" overflow with an ADHI 60g refugium sump. Before that I had a 60g Deep Blue Cube mixed reef with a 20g sump. Check my profile out if you want to see pics of either tank. Lagoon 25 Build Equipment thus far: Tunze Silence 1073.008 Tunze Comline DOC 9001 CustomCaddy Cobalt Neotherm 75w Lagoon 25 Equipment ill be re-purposing from my previous tanks: Kessil 360we Tuna Blue (2) Tunze Turbelle Nanostream 6040 Neptune Apex - VDM, DOS, DDR, AFS Tunze Osmolator Spectrapure 90 GPD RO/DI Avast K1 Kalk Stirrer Lets get on to it. Last weekend I built the stand for my 25 Lagoon. I used 2x3's for the structure, a nice piece of Aspen for the top, and some thinner paneling for the sides with a black stain:

    Stocking IM 25g lagoon

If you don't want to hear my obnoxious story skip down to the bottom, but the story does provide background) So I have never kept a reef aquarium but I have kept (and still maintain) many of the most challenging freshwater species (like discus if you are from that side of the hobby) and I look corals and corals and the inverts are the reasons I always loved looking at reef threads and watching builds, but it from my stand point it never warranted me getting one manly because I would need to do things like mix RODI water, get super expensive lights and drop loads on corals. But about a month back I wandered into a Saltwater exclusive store and was blown away by how much cooler these things looked in person then through a computer screen. And the only fish that really made me do wow (I was mostly attracted to corals and shrimps) where a Yellow cores wrasse in there 3000 gallon display along with a Flame angel and after hearing that these fish are a little more on the easy side of care I wondered if I could house them in my favorite tank which I already decided I would purchase after reading into it and seeing my friends display with one, And that tank is the Innovative Marine 25 gallon Lagoon. I love this size because I feel that it has enough space but I can still light it with one AI prime LED fixture (my favorite fixture) and its not so big so while I start out I can just purchase my water from my LFS. So I've done about a year of research now I think I am ready. Long story short can I house either (or both but I doubt it) A flame angel or Yellow Corris Wrasse in a IM lagoon 25 with like a Shrimp goby pair and a Firefish? (this will be a coral reef) the Dimensions of the tank are 24x20x12 and there will be about 30 pounds of LR and more than enough filtration (ghost skimmer, filter socks, chemipure blue, Seachem matrix, and possible a reactor or Fuge) Any response is much appreciated!
  15. So Currently I have a JBJ 28G NanoCube with LED Pro Lighting, it is a year old now. What I didn’t like about the NanoCube was the height of the tank, I hated having to clean anything or move anything down near the bottom. The other was the lack of controllability of the lights, I feel I have some corals that are not doing as well as they could be, they seem a bit bleached out like the lighting is almost too much. What I did like however was the “moonlighting” which was a great thing for being able to see the tank all the time. So this brings me to today… I got a really awesome deal on an Innovative Marine 25 Lagoon, almost too good to believe and I will have the tank on Thursday! Here are my plans, let me know what you think... Tank - IM 25 Lagoon Lights - AI Prime HD (seen others running this, @Clown79 or anyone else running these how High are you hanging it?) Pumps - Gonna try stock for now (if too noisy will probably do 2 Eheim 600s, or a single Sicce) Powerhead - Hydor Koralia Nano (Already have the 425gph, will that be enough flow?) Filtration Chambers - 3D printing a Floss Holder - Gonna try running with sock on other side and maybe an inTank refugium caddy Heater - Finnex HMA-S 100W heater ATO - Auto Aqua Smart ATO Stand - Going Custom - Debating between full build or buying a kitchen cabinet and finishing it up nicely - But I would really like 38-40 inches in height ( @flatlandreefer, how tall is your stand?) Can anyone give me edge to edge glass measurements, I want to make sure I don’t make top to small? Thinking about getting a DJ Powerstrip to make feedings and maintenance easier. Would this be sufficient? Rock - 20.5 lbs dry marco baserock, I am currently running the 20 pounds in a 10 Gallon Aquarium with an AC70 HOB to clean out the dust on the rock. Thinking this will be my scape (yes I made a Cardboard cutout of the dimensions as close as I could) - been playing around with it a bit still, what do you think? Looking from Front- Looking Downward from Front - Looking Directly down from the top- Looking from Right Side- Looking from Left Side- Debating on sand, either the Caribsea Arag-Alive Indo-Pacific Black or Special Grade Arag-Alive ~ 20lbs Let me know what you think and if I am missing anything? Thanks for putting up with all my pictures :-)

    The Pinnacle Peninsula

Hello everyone! Some time has passed and I started to get that itch again. It happens to be some convenient timing too, now having graduated and started my career I don't face as many constraints on my setup, which is a nice feeling. This isn't my first reef nor my first nano, I tried to track progress on my last build here, but as you can see I didn't post very consistently. I had that setup setup running for about a year or so, but unfortunately had to break it down due to some financial constraints, aka being a broke college student. That said, I learned a lot of lessons. I'm hoping to carry some of these things to the new setup. My girlfriend and I just moved in together this past week, were in an apartment now so the tank had to be on the smaller side. I was really loving the new IM Pensinsula series, everyone was grabbing up the 14g, I liked the sleek look of the 20g so that's what I ordered. I had originally planned to set it up in a Peninsula format, but unfortunately once we got all the furniture in, I couldn't really find a spot I liked where I could set it up as a room divider. I have some equipment I saved from my last couple setups. Namely my AI Prime and my Jebao WP 10 which I will be carrying over to this build. I learned from the 24x24 that evaporation drives me crazy and topping off without an RODI and ATO is a major major pain. I learned my lesson this time and bought an RODI so I don't have to make constant runs for distilled water. I'll likely be ordering an IM ATO soon. A Reefkeeper Lite is on the radar as well, with hopefully an eventual upgrade to a gyre over the jebao. As far as the scape goes, I have some crappy phone pics that I quickly snapped this morning, I'll update with dslr pics when I get home. I'd like to try and keep a lagoon-style scape/livestock choice going because I liked the natural look of my last tank as everything grew in. My father's side of the family is from an island in Greece called Chios, easily one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. One of my favorite beaches on the island is named Vroulidia, and it was a bit of an inspiration for the scape. Initially I thought I had wanted to do two separate islands, but I came to like this one flowing mass. The rockwork also curves in from back to front, with the sand bed sloping up to the back right. I may plant a mangrove back rhere, we'll see. I definitely plan to stock in plenty of macroalgae. Let me know thoughts/opinions. Here's a pic I took of Vroulidia: Thanks for looking!
