Welcome to my build thread! I've been a longtime lurker on Nano-reef forums and am on my third reef tank, but this is my first build thread here! I mostly see this as an opportunity to keep track of my own thoughts and observations and hopefully use to look back on my updates on this thread and identify any trends I might not notice in isolation. As a bit of background, my first reef tank was a 40 breeder with a reef octopus HOB skimmer, a Chinese black box LED, and a whole lot of ambition. I had this tank for a couple of years while I was in high school, and had to break it down when I went off to college on the opposite coast. I was constantly plagued by aiptasia and an pink fluffy algae, and my frequent RODI filtration in the backyard annoyed my parents to no end, but I absolutely loved this tank. (A photo of my pest filled passion project) When the pandemic hit and I was stuck learning via zoom in the "hometown annex" of my university, I decided that getting back into reefing with better equipment would be the way to go. I went with a Red Sea Reefer 170, which is currently sitting sans water in the corner of my room as I write this, which was such an amazing upgrade. I cannot speak more highly about the quality and experience that Red Sea tanks offer. A cross country move after graduating college and a rather time intensive public service job have made restarting the Reefer 170 an unattainable goal for now, but once a reefer, always a reefer, and I need the smell of freshly mixed saltwater in my life again. Anyways, this thread is not about either of these past tanks, but rather the setup that is newly wet today: My new IM Nuvo 10! Some basic tank specs for the setup I have planned: Display: IM Nuvo 10 PRO 2 12”x15”x13” Lighting: Kessil A80 Filter Media: Stock back chamber media basket with activated carbon and GFO Heater: Eheim Jager 100w Circulation: Stock MightyJet return pump and VorTech MP-10w QD Skimmer: Innovative Marine Nuvoskim DC Protein Skimmer ATO: Manual top off as needed General thoughts on this build: Sand: I've gone back and forth on this, and while I do think that I'll remove the sand bed at some point in the future, at least for the first year I'm going with a simple Caribsea Pink Fiji. The BRS TV experiments and the countless build threads I've seen of beautiful tanks with spotless sand beds seem to weigh the scales for me towards a sand bed rather than bare bottom. Having the extra surface area for bacteria while the tank settles into a normal seems to be a good idea, and if I ever decide to get serious about turning this tank into an SPS dominant system I can remove the sand bed, leave the tank alone for a month or two, and then get going. Lighting: I'm using the Kessil A80 I had from my last tank, and I also have the Kessil 360x I used for that tank in my closet, but the 360x seems like an incredibly overkill choice for this tank, especially now while I'm trying to keep things simple. The most light intensive corals I am even considering at this moment would be a monti cap or pocillopora at the very top of the rock work, and while the A80 might be underpowered for these, I would rather have too little light than too much while I get this tank going, and SPS are not in the cards for months. Water Changes: I'll admit that like many reefers, I have not been the most diligent about weekly water changes in the past. This has pretty clearly been the source of my past problems with SPS corals, and while the siren song of a water changeless reef maintenance regiment continues to ring in my ears, I am committed to following the successful methods of folks on this site. Reef keeping may seem like rocket science at times, but it seems like the best rule of reefkeeping is the simplest: follow through on regular water changes. My plan is for about 2 gallons a week, which would be about a 15-20% water change weekly. Stocking: I love ocellaris clownfish and want to keep the bioload in this tank low, so I'm thinking of keeping the fish in this tank to a single clown. I might change my mind and go for a pair, but I'd really rather not risk nitrate and phosphate issues down the line simply because I want two clowns in the tank. Rock: When I used dry rock for my Reefer 170, the results were ugly at first, and the algae issues only got better when I added some KP aquatics live rock. It seems like folks on the forums are moving away from the sterile starts that were all the rage a couple of years ago, and I think my experience tracks with that shift in the conventional wisdom. I've noticed that Tampa Bay Saltwater aquacultured live rock has historically been held up as the gold standard, and I'm thinking of trying out their nano tank package of premium live rock shipped through the mail. It is cheaper than KP aquatics and I only need a few pounds for this build. I want to keep the scape pretty minimalist to avoid a claustrophobic look to the tank, which is easy to achieve in a small cubic tank shape. Flow: With the dual outflow from the MightyJet pump that came with the tank reducing the flow pretty significantly, I added an old MP10 I had saved. When I add sand and rocks, I may remove this additional flow, but it seems like many folks who run successful IM Nuvo 10 setups have another powerhead for more random flow so I figured I might follow in their footsteps. The tank and light arrived today. I’m waiting for the InTank chaeto media rack and back compartment cover, and the random flow generator. The company I ordered it from seems a bit ridiculous, so hopefully it doesn’t take too long to get here. I am going to order the heater and controller, and now I am trying to figure out where it should go. I originally thought I’d put it by my tv, but the tank instructions said to keep it away due to salt creep. It would have been nice there! The light is the AI Prime 16 HD. My next research will be on water, so that I buy all the correct test kits and understand how to go through a cycle. Someone had asked me elsewhere what I’d like for stocking, and I have one solid answer so far… a Gladiator clownfish. Unforntately, from what I’ve found, they are a bit pricey 🤦🏼♀️

I've been dealing with high nitrates (40-60ppm) due to my admittedly overstocked setup. I'm Strongly considering the Kamoer X2SR to do 1 gallon +/- water changes per day. Would of course adjust this as needed based on levels. Considering this pump primarily due to the amazing head pressure(35ft). I could plumb this from my water station in the basement. That said, I would like to use the ATO feature as well, so that everything works together, but I'm not sure I would be able to and have the controller so far away. I'm sure there's a work around. It seems like this would be a better long term solution than any other means while also keeping things clean aesthetically. I also assume this could replace the need for dosing, skimmers etc. Please talk me out of it. If my logic sound? Besides initial cost, any drawbacks I'm not considering. Side note: I'm planning to upgrade to a RS Reefer 300 in the near future and assumed it would be extra handy for that setup.

Hello, My name is Semir, I am a student who lives in NY who is falling back in love with the reef hobby. During 2018, I had joined Reef2Reef, another reef website which i still use religiously. I began there when i was deciding what i wanted to do when it came to this hobby. My first ever tank started the summer of 2018. I didn't want to go expensive so i went cheap. Turns out cheap is expensive! I began with a 65g aqueon tank from a big retail store near my house. I went and bought more things online through multiple online marine websites. I never knew what kind of tank i wanted when it came to fish keeping. I ended up going with a reef tank. I found it absolutely fascinating. From nemo to dori. From clams to shrimp. Soft coral to SPS. Little did i know what i kind of an obsession this would become. I started off really fast, i wasn't patient. After my tank cycled, i stuffed it with clowns, a yellow eyed kole tang, cleaner wrasse, a bunch of lps and sps. After about a month things began to die, i had no clue what i was doing. I began doing more and more research to what it takes to run a reef. I tried my absolute best and i ended up doing real well. Here are some pictures of the 65g After two years, i began to lose interest. By December of 2020, i had taken apart the tank and absolutely hated the idea of having it. It was my pride and joy but it was also my downfall. Between school, work, tank and personal life i couldn't keep up so something had to go. I took apart the tank thinking it would make it better for me. It truly did not. I walked through my door to look over my shoulder at what was once a tank, now a dresser. I missed having the tank. I missed looking at the life forms from in the tank. It used to distract me but it was never negative. It lifted pressure off my shoulders even if it was for a couple minutes. I made a mistake getting rid of the tank i had. I lost money, time and effort that i spent forever trying to do. After a coupe months of pity on myself for not having the tank, i decided to go and buy a IM Nuvo 10. I had some rock leftover from the old tank and i went and bought some sand as well. I cycled the tank and thew in two nass snails for the mean time. I made a stand for it for the short term, it looks quite botched. I was wanting to buy the im stand but i decided i am going to rebuild the tank stand i had made. But enough talking, ill post a picture of the tank as it is right now. Also to add on, im sort of a Soft Coral coral head if that makes sense... Lol

HI REEFERS! Long time reader first time poster. I am starting a 10 gallon reef tank and want to share my ups and probably many, many, many downs! I have had reef tank for over 6 years, and still feel like a noob. I went with a Innovative Marine fusion Nuvo 10. I want to make it an anemone and clown fish tank but for now I will temporary house two Clown fish as well as a Pink Streak Wrasse. This is only temporary until I get my algae out break in my 20 gallon tank under control.

Hello Everybody! Its been about a year and a half since I had my 1 Gallon Cubus reef which I ended up tearing down before I moved back home. Now that I've been settled back in Wisconsin for a while, I felt it was time to get back into Saltwater. So, today I went and picked up an IM Nuvo 10 Pro from my LFS for 199.99. I will be picking up live rock tomorrow morning, I just wanted to get it running tonight with the sand. Equipment: Tank: IM Nuvo 10 Light: PAR30 (I believe. This light is off of my Cubus, I have a PAR38 on the way.) Heater: ViaAqua 50W Sand: Nature's Ocean Live Aragonite Sand Shoutout to @Tamberav and @Seadragon for suggesting this tank to me! Here's how it looks right now. My Iphone 11Pro is making it a lot bluer than it actually is. I will be posting more photos tomorrow once I get live rock.

Hi everyone! Total beginner here who decided to start a reef tank. I've always been fascinated with marine life since an early age, and I did a bunch of research/planning before jumping in. That said, I'm sure I have a lot to learn, which is why I decided to document my progress here and hopefully get helpful tips along the way! Full disclosure: this tank was originally a display model at my local reef shop. I was originally planning to start from scratch, tank cycling and all, but the deal was just too good to pass up (I'm working on a tight budget). So I may have slightly cheated because this tank was already set up and running for a month or two before I got it. I did change up the aquascaping quite a bit though to make it my own. Equipment List: Tank: IM Nuvo 10 gallon Stand: Fusion APS Cabinet Stand Heater: Cobalt Neo-Therm 50w Light: Ecotech Radion XR15w Pro G4 with Diffuser attachment, and RMS Tank Mount with custom riser Return Pump: Sicce Syncra 0.5 Powerhead: Ecotech Vortech Mp10w Quiet Drive Controller: Neptune Systems Apex EB8 Power Bar WXM for connecting to Radion and Mp10 LSM Lunar Sim Module (I dont think I will end up using this on a tank this small) pH, Temperature, and Salinity probes Breakout Box with Float switch controlling a second Sicce Syncra 0.5 ATO Pump (Breakout box also controls a LED light strip inside the cabinet triggered by a magnetic door sensor) DOS peristaltic dosing pump set to continuous water change of 1350 mL a day. Other: IM In Tank Media Basket Upgrade with Filter Floss in the top cage and a Chemi-Pure Blue Nano packet in each of the bottom 2. Livestock List: Clean Up Crew: Dwarf Cerith Snails, Nerite Snails, and Nassarius Vibex snails Female Yasha Hase Goby Red Banded Pistol Shrimp ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It all started with this box of glass and this box of rocks: I decided to go with some Pukani Dry Live Rock and start out with as sterile of a system as possible. I soaked the rock in a diluted bleach and water solution for 2 weeks to remove any organic materials that might have been left over on the rock. After that I did a muriatic acid dip. I did about a 20 minute dip. I then let the rock cure in a bin in my garage for a few months in fresh water, doing 50% water changes every week or so. If I was going to do this again, I would dip for less time, with a more diluted solution. It is pretty crazy just how much the acid ate away from the rocks. I didn't take any pictures of this process, but to give you an idea of what I mean, here are some aquascapes I was playing around with before doing anything to the rock: And here is the first ever FTS: December 15, 2018 As you can see, the acid really opened up a lot of tiny little pores in the rock but it also ate away a good amount of the rock itself. I'm not saying I wouldn't do that again, but I'd definitely do it differently next time. Anyways, the tank finally got water in it, and got a Dr. Tim's fishless cycle going the first week of December 2018. Here's the Most recent FTS from the other day (sorry for dirty water, I had just finished doing a bit of scraping/cleaning): February 15, 2019 The first additions after the cleanup crew were a Female Yasha Goby and a Red Banded Pistol Shrimp combo I scored from Diver's Den. Here's a pic of the Yasha while she was being drip acclimated: I didn't get any pictures of the shrimp that were worth sharing unfortunately. And once they went into the tank they disappeared for 2 days. I'm happy to say though that today I was able to catch a glimpse of the goby coming out to snag a few Mysis shrimp I fed! She wouldn't let me get close enough to take a good picture without going into hiding, but I managed to snap this one: Well, that's pretty much all I have for now. I'll update with some more info tomorrow as far as future plans are concerned and hopefully some more pictures! I do apologize for the quality of the photos, I have a pretty old phone, and I'm not the best photographer to begin with - but I do promise to get better as I go. Hi all, I have decided to attempt to document my 10 gallon IM nano reef journey. I have been in the fish keeping hobby for 9 years now but only have been keeping reef tanks for about 3 years with my 65 gallon reef. I wish I had documented the process of building that tank as it has changed so much since ive had it, but anyway... The other week my lfs had the innovative marine 10g for 20% off, I ended up pulling the trigger. I am excited to start this tank off from scratch and will not be carrying anything over from my larger system as it has had its fair share of battles with ich in the last few years. As of now I only have the tank, skyye light, spin stream, heater, and fish guard. Im looking into getting an ato but other then that plan on keeping things as simple as possible. In terms of fish I am limited in the 65 as I have a golden dwarf moray eel who I am afraid would make lunch out of any small fish so I am hoping to keep some smaller fish in the 10. Hey everyone so I've been on here a while but never documented my DIY 25g since I started it back around march last year, well I regret not documenting it, and lately I've been wanting to start up a smaller tank, so I thought, why not make a thread so I can record it so I can look back on it? I figure this way I can also learn from others and try to keep my questions in at least a lesser amount of threads. So its been official, I took the plunge on buying 14 ibs of BRS reef saver along with some hanna reagent about an hour ago. I made my tank DIY last time, and although I am still interested in doing that since I can tailor it to my needs, Im not the best craftsman wise. So I am currently looking into a couple tanks before I pull the trigger later tonight. it seems I have a couple options Im most interested in; the waterbox 7g or 10g IM nuvo fusion 10 I am a bit torn between the nuvo 10g or waterbox 10g. the fact they are plug and play is a nice bonus, compared to when I did my DIY, as doing a false wall is a bit frustrating when attempting not to shatter acrylic from drilling or scoring. the two are essentially the same price, although the IM nuvo comes with the lid, so I am leaning towards that. How does everyone who has one of these feel about the back chambers? I am currently debating between a Bare bottom tank or at least shallow sand. I never tried a Bare bottom tank and I think I'd really enjoy the look and cleanliness of it since Im already bad at vacuuming my sand in my tank. what do you guys suggest? my planned inhabitant will be either my Rainford's Goby or my Tail Spot Blenny from my 25g. Lately I've seen some random aggression from the blenny towards the Rainford, and Im planning to take one of them out, leaning towards the Rainford. I feel conflicted about putting the rainford in the 10g if its a Bare bottom, since he hasnt taken prepared food (live BBS, frozen, pellet) yet but picks at rocks and sifts the sand. I'm not sure if its refusal of prepared food or rather him being so passive, my other fish take it from him before he has a chance to eat? Besides hopefully the goby once cycled, I do plan to stock with coral, although Im not sure which yet, I know I have a few frags of zoas in my 25 without a home yet, but I also do really like the look of euphillia, and ricordeas. maybe euphillia on the top with zoas and rics mid to low? the lighting will be my finnex 12" Planted+ until I am sure about which Light i want, I am currently thinking of a par LED bulb to hang over, but I might get another nanobox light, just depends what I end up doing, and feels better to me. For my Filtration, I feel like I dont have too much space to play with like I did in the 25g. what would you guys suggest here? I imagine a skimmer would be useful for phosphates, plus a small bio pellet reactor for nitrates, but I am interested to see what others would say instead. maybe purigen and phosguard? not sure yet, but plenty of time to think. Maybe just cut a portion of my chaeto and carry it over, with activated carbon. ~~ anyways Im sure that might be TLDR but thanks everyone who read, I love seeing other peoples journals for reference, and learning from their experiences with their tanks, I'm hoping mine can help someone elses once it matures.

Welcome all! I have just set up my Innovative Marine Nuvo Fusion 10. This is a downgrade from a 20g long in which I installed a DIY AIO overflow. My fish and corals are being held in a friend's tank. There have been a few casualties, but that's always a risk in reef keeping. I have a spot to get LR from for a great price, and I'll be getting some established water as well to speed up my cycle a bit, so hopefully I can get all my inhabitants into the Nuvo 10 a little sooner. Here's the equipment that I'll be running: Aquamaxx NemoLight 18w LED Aquamaxx FR-SE Reactor Accel Aquatics LED Fuge strip Tunze Silent 1073.008 39.6-211GPH Return Pump Hydor Theo 50w heater Auto Aqua Smart Micro ATO As you can probably tell, I'll be running a Chaeto reactor. While this won't be a significant source of nutrient export, It will still help keep other algae from growing in the display, as well as make a nice refuge for pods. I'm debating wether or not to get a Reef Glass skimmer, but that's down the road. My main plan with the tank is Euphyllia. If anyone has watched Inappropriate Reefer on YouTube, that frogspawn at the top of his 45g is what I want to recreate. Other than that, the tank will be mostly zoas and mushrooms (mainly ricordea). Okay so if anybody is in the market to get a nano skimmer take this write up into consideration. I couldn't find a skimmer to fit in the small space. There's only one skimmer out there that would work for me. There was still a possibility that it wouldn't have fit plus I would have been spending over $100 So the items you'll need is some kind of bottle or tube that will fit your space I found drink bottles to work the best for This because you can utilize the the water tight seal in the cap of most drinks

Build thread of my nuvo 10 gallon all in one reef He's pics of live sand and dry rock not sure my approach on cycling this tank yet Water is in thoughts on a quick start additive and a clown fish? I know it's not proper I have ran a 65 gallon mixed reef cube for the last 3 years parted ways so I'm not new to the hobby but wanted to hear some options
