    The Ryukyu Shallows

State of the Aquarium: Nearly full stocking. I'd like to get one more Favia speciosa colony of a different color. I am also thinking of another Acanthastrea echinata frag/colony somewhere too. Didn't realize image compression and Figure 1 looks terribad. yikes! The story actually begins well before this photo on the 22nd. We rewind to December 27th to where I was moving a couple of aquariums in my wife's Honda Fit. (near professional aquarium mover at this point, it's my 4th move). She says she didn't say that, but from that video conversation through Facebook I started thinking real hard what would I make for a third aquarium. I wanted to be lazy and build another planted tank, but I was ready for something different like the tank I made before. I built an Amazon blackwater aquarium to just see how simple or hard it was to maintain that effect. Turns out it was just a matter of boiling botanicals to no end. Wife was okay with another tank. Good enough for me. I was a newly minted aquatics specialist at my Petco and I turned the saltwater section around by not killing all the invertebrates. (That's another story to tell.) Then I thought, hey you're not at FOWLR tanks why not building a reef tank at home? $1 per gallon sale happened right around the new year. I hemmed and hawed at the idea of getting a tank. I looked at Inappropriate Reefer's 10g build. Then I saw defekt's Sanity Saver. Perfect. I had to work around my property management for not having an aquarium of 15 gallons or more. I worked the legal gray area by getting a 20 gallon long since I remember measuring the inside dimensions came closer to 16 gallons than 20 gallons as advertised on the marketing label. I never enjoyed tanks that ran tall with a poor footprint. Bigger footprints mean more horizontal swimming room and unless you're caring for sea jellies or freshwater angels height can be a dimension to ignore. Fortunately there was only one 20L sold at my store and after 3 weeks of thinking really hard of how to build it and its life support elements I decided to go for it and blocked out the image of a nasty credit card bill (but hey points right?). I bought the tank around January 10th and it just sat there sad without a stand for about a week. I was still wondering if this was a good move, but I didn't like the idea of just wasting a perfectly good tank. I built one of those nicer Petco stands (because my wife doesn't have her woodworking tools right now). And that stood for another few days. I painted the back of the aquarium with clearance acrylic paint from Michaels. I waited another week as I was picking out parts. Life Support System: (thanks defekt) AC70 from a previous tank with floss, purigen, phosguard, and biomax rings 2x Koralia 240s Fluval 100w heater Current Orbit Marine LED 24-36" Parts arrived on January 21st. Thanks Amazon Prime trial. CaribSea LifeRock, 20lb box arrived January 22nd. I bought CaribSea CORALine from my Petco store. Figure 1. Insert awful photo.

    HELP! Possible coral bleaching?

So I recently picked up a torch and a favia for my 12.5 gallon tank. After a while I noticed the torch lose color very quickly, and begin to not extend much at all, and now I’m starting to notice the favia lose its green color on the top, but it still hasn’t it on the sides which are shaded from the light, is this fixable? All of my other vitals are doing well, but as you can see below, these two seem to be struggling.
  3. One of my LPS corals is turning red around the edges. Does it look like it’s dying? It still extends its sweepers at night, not sure how to help it.
  4. So today is finally here, today I move from the original Pico to the new one. I figured I would start a new journal and detail it from now as well as go into more detail about the setup, what was built and what was bought. FTS 3/14/18 FTS 10/8/17 More to come... Set up consists of : -2 X 2.5 gallon aquariums (Total tank volume after rock and media displacement is roughly 3 gallons) -Roughly 5lbs of live rock -256gph pond pump with two outlets - one up top for surface tension, one lower for flow through middle of tank -Diy led, 4 blue, 6 royal blue, 4 warm white and 3 cool whites on 3 channels powered by laptop power supplies and dc motor dimmers. -LEDs are 3 w, 3v ordered off ebay, non branded -Tank was drilled with a dremel and Bulkheads are made from male and female pvc adapters (After tank was drilled and bulkheads were siliconed in I mixed and poured a two part epoxy resin about 1/4 inch thick to reinforce the glass and pcv) -Sump is a simple 2 chamber design, water flows through filter floss-chemipure-a box of MarinePure biofilter media-purigen-return pump -DIY ATO - Float switch connected to DC 12v relay which controls a 40gph pump in the reservoir -Temperature controller is a 5$ board bought off ebay, set temp and a fan will kick on when needed, it sits directly over the return side of the sump. Keeps the temperature between 79-81 Coral list: Hammer Candycane /trumpet Kenya tree Pink xenia Duncan GSP Clove polyp Purple gorgonian Orange rhodactis mushroom Green rhodactis mushroom yellow/green plate coral five kinds of palys - will update closeup pictures for help with identification eleven different types of zoas - will update closeup pictures for help with identification *when it comes to zoas and palys I have come to learn that most of them have made up names. My 'laser lemons' were actually purple people eaters... * Any questions about the setup, feel free to ask.
  5. I got this favia about a month ago from the LFS, doing great, but around 1 week ago, I started to notice that these little white spots appeared and today it really spread and looks bad, I did some reading and I think it's bleaching or white band disease. Any help on what it is, and treatment I already have the light off less. Thanks!

    Something on my favia

I have a favia coral. On the coral are 2-3 of these fan like things that spring out and retract real quick. Hasn’t spread. Just curious if anyone knows what it is. Also the red tubes on that favia. Any ideas? Only on one side of the favia and it’s only two tubes

    HELP Broken Favites Polyp

I just got a favites frag a few days ago. Today I noticed one of the corners was chipped and the polyp damaged. The other polyps are behaving like normal. Will the broken corner polyp heal itself?

    Favia missing heads

Hey guys! just picked up a watermelon favia colony that I bought at an auction and it seems to be missing two heads right in the middle. The auction picture showed that it used to have them. Whats going on? should I be worried about this?
