Nothing too demanding, keeping it simple since this is my first saltwater tank and I don’t want to get too complicated for a tank that belongs to a preschooler. —— Well, I've wanted to set up a reef tank for years, but life kept getting in the way. I had bought some stuff to start a 40B a few years ago but that project got derailed when I got pregnant with my oldest. Fast forward almost 4 years and the aforementioned derailment is now an almost 4 year old who absolutely loves fish (and so do his little brothers). The one bright point of all the time he and his siblings spend at hospitals is always checking out the fish tanks they have for some time to de-stress. So this little guy is getting a 13.5g evo for his birthday for he and I to enjoy together. His is birthday is the first week of June, our current goal is to have it cycled and ready for his first fish on his birthday. I have the tank sitting waiting, refractometer arrived just now and the stand should be here today too before the holiday. Going to be sticking with the stock lights and such at least for now, since we’re not looking to get into anything too complicated for a tank for a 4 year old, we’ll be sticking to softies and maybe some LPS. I’ll probably end up at least adding a power head sometime soon, but for cycling we’ll be ok with the stock return pump. I have to check my gear in the basement, I had a heater that was supposed to be for a QT tank that might work for this tank, if not I still need to grab one, along with some salt, distilled water (we don’t have the space in our little rental for a RODI unit right now so we’re starting with distilled), test kit and some rock from the LFS. They only carry the Caribsea Life Rock so we’ll see how that works out for us. Hoping to get the tank wet this weekend to start cycling. Stocking plans are up in the air mostly except for a clownfish, or maybe a pair. This is a tank (mostly) for a child after all, so it wouldn’t be complete without a clown.

After starting my membership here with a strong showing, and for my own educational purposes and record, I guess I’ll start a journal. Seems like a good place to keep a list of ideas and tips to help me on this journey! Tank: Fluval Evo XII 13.5 gallon started 1/21/2019 Equipment: Fluval spec return pump 132gph Fluval sea mini protein skimmer 5-10gallon Fluval 50W heater In Tank Chamber 1 media basket Current Orbit Marine LED light w bracket arm Current Orbit Eflux Wave pump 660gph (along w their hubs) IM mesh screen Media: Fluval bio rings (bottom level of media basket) Fluval 100gm carbon (bottom level media basket) Fluval clearmax (middle level media basket) IM filter floss (top level media basket) Stock: 14lbs live rock ? Lbs of life sand Black oscellaris clown True percula clown Blue spotted goby watchman Red banded snapping shrimp Scarlet shrimp Trochus snails x4 Dwarf red hermit crabs x 10 Star polyp x 2 (one split into two sections thanks to hermits, so there’s three-ish) Palys x 2: both protopalythoa Hairy mushroom x3 (all on one big rock) Hammer x 1 Zoa x1 Now obviously I didn’t start with all of this at once. We started with three clowns in fact- two percula and the oscellaris, but the two bigger fish kept trying to kill the smaller so I took the small guy back to save him from certain death within a week. Following that, the black was named Jolly Roger and the percula Jack Sparrow. (What can I say- this tank is “supposed” to be owned by my soon to be 9 year old who LOVES POTC, but secretly, it’s mine 😁) We started with two trochus and five hermits, but I doubled that for more cleaning power after about two and a half weeks. Those guys don’t get names. We added the goby and his “pal” Jan 22, but they NEVER hang with each other and in fact I’m not sure they know the other exists anymore. The goby was named J Edgar Hoover because he is always watching us with disapproval from across the room and follows us around the tank with his permanent frown. The pistol shrimp was named Snappy because well..... 🤷🏻‍♀️ We added the scarlet shrimp a week ago, and he’s quite the personality. We call him the Red Baron. We started the tank with a zoa and the little star polyp that the herms split in two. We next added the protopalys. Added the hammer today, with some drama due to the LFS lady who evidently thinks I’m out to kill everything in my tank 🤦🏽‍♀️. That’s it for this tank in a nutshell.

My tangs are protecting my male clown?? (Video)

So let me preface this by saying that yes my tank is small for those two tangs. They get along great and are just in the tank for algae control until I move them to my larger system. So so recently my female clown has become more and more aggressive. To the point where the male now has to resign to the bottom corner of the tank. Today I sat down and observed my tangs seeming to break up the domestic dispute. Every time the female started acting up the hippo tang arrived and carefully slid between them and guided the female away. The yellow tang even joined in too. This video is not a one off and doesn’t even do a fantastic job of demonstrating the behavior I’m talking about. Does anyone know what’s going on here. I can’t think of any other way to explain the behavior than that the tangs don’t want to see the conflict for some reason. Heres the link to the video: https://youtu.be/GUaWYtLBfgE
  5. @banasophia recommended I should create a journal on here. So… here we go! 😊 Hello! My name is Tyler (aka inland_reef). The ‘Tale of Three Tanks’ began with the purchase of a used 28 gallon Nanocube on April 9, 2018 (Just rounded out the 1 year mark!). Like everyone else on this forum, I got addicted to saltwater aquariums 😂 This journal will talk about the evolution of my tanks, their setup specs and my ideas for future plans. While you're here, enjoy some eye candy of my current setups below. Ill try to make this a picture heavy journal, but you can see more pictures of my tanks on my Instagram page @inland_reef . I post daily updates there.
  6. So my 20g tank just finished cycling a few days ago. On Sunday I went and got a pair of clownfish. Monday morning I noticed small white spots on both. Needless to say, i believe it's ich. I didnt QT them (i dont even have a QT tank, but I definitely will in the future), just acclimated and dropped em in. I'm reading about running the tank fallow for 76 days, but my question is what should be my course of action? Is that best with a small tank? I only have a hermit and snail in the tank, no coral yet. Most likely I will have 4-5 total fish, so what would you do??

  9. Considering options for a nano tank setup with a pair of clownfish, bubble tip anemone and CUC. My current idea is a 16 gal Biocube with light upgrade (Steve’s/NanoBox LED). Saw a few post that may suggest this is too small. What do you all think?

Sustainable Reef Stocking for 23 Gallon

Hey reefers! After many successful years in the freshwater hobby, I've decided to jump ship into reefing. My current system is a 23~ gallon display (I can't remember exact numbers since I use the metric system) with a sump (8 gallons?) with a skimmer, wavemaker ect. I purchased the tank already cycled and with coral from a local reefer 2 weeks ago, and have since added a happy pair of captive bred ocelaris clowns. I was wondering what other options I have in terms of livestock, but with a twist. I want my reef to have as little impact on the real ones as possible, so I'm looking for fish suggestions who are regularly available captive bred. I know this limits my options quite a lot, but I'm hoping you guys have my back. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
  11. Yesterday night my clownfish started flashing. There was nothing visible on his skin. I gave him a freshwater dip. I just got home from work today and he’s got a big white something hanging off his face. It almost looks like some sand stuck by his mouth, but it’s definitely stuck on. Quick background on my tank, it’s new (like 2ish months) and all the fish are newish too. I added a cardinalfish a LFS. Then I added the clown who I got from divers den live aquaria. Then I added a second cardinal from a second LFS. I’ve added coral from local stores and that I’ve ordered online. I didn’t quarantine anyone (I know I know I should have). Both cardinalfish are looking and acting totally normal. I gave the clownfish a freshwater bath for 5 minutes last night. I know it was probably too little too late, but I wanted to do something. Nothing visible came off him. It’s my first tank and I didn’t quarantine because I don’t really have the space or money to set up a quarantine tank. WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?? What’s the cheapest/easiest but still ethical way for me to fix my clown? Aldo let me know if you need any additional info from me.

Welcome to my journey! I decided to get back into the reefing hobby, Im a bit late to post on the forum, but my tank is already up and running! I add corals every week, and post updates. They get fed the NLS Pellets in the morning, the PE Mysis in the afternoon, and at night the get Reef Frenzy Nano I just did a water change so I will post photos in a couple hours! 🙂
  13. I am wanting to set up a 20 gallon nano reef tank, I haven’t started yet as I’m pricing things out. But I’m am wondering how much gph water flow I should get? My filter currently does 92gph, but as I’ve gathered so far that isn’t ebough water flow for a reef tank. Can I please get some suggestions? Also I’m planning on getting a clown fish, and an anenome (most likely bubble) after the tank has matured. As for other fish I haven’t thought or planned any yet but i’s Love to get a tuxedo urchin.
  14. I'm bored at work so I guess I'll officially make a thread for this tank (seeing as though I have been better at updating lately). I'm going to start the thread with it's current stocking and state. If you want to look at older pictures of the build, I have a pretty extensive record on my Instagram account: pico_reefer. Equipment: - Fluval Evo 5 - MP 10 - Cobalt 50 watt heater - Kessil a160we Livestock: - Gold nugget maroon clownfish (female) - lightning maroon clownfish (male) - 1 sexy shrimp - various types of bubble tip anemones (the original plan was to be a bta only tank). - mini maxi anemone - green and red Monti caps - rainbow Monti - bubble gum digi - sunset monti - yellow and black sun corals - dendro - utter chaos zoas - green/red bowerbanki - jack-o'-lantern leptoseris - branching psammacorra - space invader pectinia - a green platygyra? - darth maul porites - a two tone red streaky chalice - sinularia - toadstool (The ultimate goal was to keep the theme green and red, I've diverged a little bit but that's ok) Maintenance: I typically do at least a 100% water changes weekly if not more (seeing as though it's only roughly 4 gallons of actual water volume) Long term plan: I've realized that this is probably not a feasible tank for a long term, I'll probably upgrade to the 13.5 gallon version eventually. I haven't had an issue with nutrient control or algae due to my weekly water changes. The one thing I am concerned about is the size of the maroons (however they are couch potatoes and rarely leave their btas, only to eat and attack my hand lol). All I know is it's pretty difficult to chose a favorite between this system and my 2.5 gallon. Here are some pictures: DSLR pic under a whiter spectrum: Blue spectrum with aquariclip: Top down with DSLR: Macro of the lighting:

    Clownfish Sick?

Hello, I was wondering if I should be concerned about the behavior of my Picasso clown. I have a Fluval Evo 13.5 that has been running for give or take 2 months. I am new to the Saltwater community but have several Freshwater tanks that have been running for a year plus. Anyways... For clean up crew, I have 2 turbo snails, two Scarlet Hermit crabs, and one Skunk Cleaner shrimp, who recently molted successfully. They have all been in the tank for give or take 3 weeks. Around that same time introducing cuc, I bought a smaller teardrop percula clown and he has been doing fantastic; normal breathing, eating everyday. I also have a Bubble Coral that has also been doing great. So I bought the Picasso Clown from my local fish store about 3 days ago, dripped him for about an hour and 15 mins, and he went in just fine. My water perimeters have been stable ever since I introduced inverts and first clown. No spikes in ammonia, salinity or nitrites. I am kind of a freak with testing my water, so I have been doing it every other day since adding any life to the tank. I have noticed that the Picasso has stayed in one of the corners in a vertical position, which is what concerns me. Like I said I am new to saltwater and don’t know if this is a warning sign. He does swim around a lot, and is eating just fine. There is a thermometer probe in the corner he chills in, so maybe he has decided to host it? Please help me out.

    "Nano" Clownfish

I was wandering the aisles of my lfs during my lunch break today, and I saw what looked to be juvenile ocellaris clowns labeled as "nano" clowns. I was told that the store's supplier claims that they are a special breed of ocellaris that have been bred to stay relatively small, however the store had not had them in stock long enough to confirm or deny this claim. I've done some research and found a few threads on other sites mentioning something similar, but they were all several years old and inconclusive. Is this a new (real) thing? I suspect that they may just be very young, run-of-the-mill ocellaris clowns. Anyways, I picked one up out of curiosity (they were fairly cheap) and I'll try to remember to update down the road. So far it has been eating well, though it looks a bit thin. Hopefully it turns out alright. That's a U.S. dime for scale, about 18mm across.
  17. Just bought a clown fish a couple of days ago. Hes wildly / aggressively swimming at the very top of the tank near the surface very quickly into the powerhead current - all day, all night long. checked my ammonia, its at 0. I also did a 30% water change this morning just in case - hes still doing the same thing. My ph is low at 8, and historically its never been above 8. (Which tells me I have too much carbon dioxide) I opened all the windows and have an open top tank - Im thinking maybe my apartment has low oxygen. However with the window open all day long - Im not sure I think its that anymore. Any ideas? Hes only eaten one pellet this morning - didn't touch the others. I'll check if he eats tomorrow. Hes my only fish in a 20 gallon tank. Tank is roughly 7 months old. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHAcE_urs0c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd2KNLBArAc

    red spot on Clownfish

Hello, beginner here to this hobby. Had my clown in QT for 3 weeks and has been in my tank for 1 week. Noticed this red mark on him. He has been eating. All of my parameters are fine and he has been eating. Just noticed the mark on him a few days ago. Need help identifying and if I need to take action. The red blemish is on the lower part of face on the white marking. The mark has not spread or got worse. Tank has been cycled for about 4 weeks now . While in QT medicated with General Cure only.

    Clownfish and Blenny Help

Hi, Around a week ago I got a Tribal blenny from my LFS for my 34-gallon mixed reef tank. My current stock was a six-line wrasse, 3 clownfish (yes, I know, not normal, but the guy I bought it from had all 3 for two years, and now I have had them for a year so they are all cool), pistol shrimp, and a cleaner shrimp. I never had problems introducing fish to the tank ever before (the clowns were the only original stock), and so I thought all would be good. Boy, was I wrong, the big female was immediately aggressive, and not even just nips, once when into the rockwork and came out with him in his mouth; on top of that, she has become increasingly aggressive towards one of her clown mates. The Blenny now takes shelter in the very back on the tank were the clowns can't go. I and probably going to return him tomorrow as they have yet to stop fighting, the big female is still searching for him as she knows he is in the back. I have several questions. 1) Why would the clown be aggressive all of a sudden? 2) Is there a way to stop this? 3) Can I get new fish or will she always act like this now? Update: Now even the medium clown is going after the blenny

26G Nano Reef | Coral Eden

Current FTS - 20.11.2017 Background : I’ve been a fan of Reef tanks for ages but always was afraid to start one myself so I kept myself busy with freshwater tanks. After reading a lot about them, especially this forum, I decided to start my first Nano Reef. My initial plan was to start something small, around 6 Gallons. But after going through this forum, I saw how hard it is to keep small aquariums stable. So I decided to start with a 26 Gallon. Tank : ● 26 Gallon Custom Tank with a filter compartment in the back. Altogether around 30 Gallons. Equipment : ● Resun 1000L/h Submersible Pump ● Jebao RW-4 Wavemaker ● Resun SK-300 Nano Protein Skimmer ● Zetlight ZA1201 Marine LED Light Filteration : ● 30 Pounds of Live Rock ● 15 Pounds of Live Sand ● Filter Sponge ● GAC ● Purigen Livestock: Fish: ● Firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica) x 1 ● Black Photon Clownfish (Amphiprion percula) x 2 ● Purple Firefish (Nemateleotris decora) x 1 ● Segmented Blenny (Salarias segmentatus) x 1 ● Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) x 1 ● Pinkbar goby (Pinkbar goby) x 1 Inverts: ● Scarlet Skunk Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata amboinensis) x 2 ● Trochus Snails (Trochus radiatus) x 5 ● Porcelain Anemone Crab (Neopetrolisthes oshimai) x 1 ● Indian Sea Star (Fromia indica) x 1 ● Maxi-Mini Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla tapetum) x 2 Corals: ● Zoanthids (Zoanthus sp.) x 5 ● Mushroom Coral (Actinodiscus sp.) x 1 ● Superman Mushroom (Discosoma sp.) x 2 ● Hammer Coral (Euphyllia ancora) x 1 ● Open Brain Coral ( ? ) X 1 FTS - 11.07.2016 - First Livestock Added FTS - 11.06.2016 - Tank Established Comments are appreciated.
  23. So as you can see in the title I have finally broke down and bought a Red Sea max 170 with the sump upgrade after I saw that my LFS was doing a 15% discount on them. But I haven't filled this tank yet but I will probably buy some water to fill later today, this is MY first tank, but I helped take care of one at the LFS I help out at. But basically I know I want corals, there my favorite thing in the reefing hobby. I will probably keep the Red Sea skimmer in the back chamber along with the media basket then in the sump upgrade I will most likely do a refugium. The light is a AI hydra 26, and I might get a MP-10, if not I might just get 2 korelias to tide me over till I get the MP-10. So now that you all know the equipment im running im wondering what livestock I can keep. Coral -GSP (separate rock) -Finger Leather -Toadstool -Zoas -Hammer -Frogspawn -Candycane -Elegence -Possibly acans -Later down the line a Monti cap or two. -And then any other corals that I might find interesting later down the line. Fish (I order from what will be added last to what will be added first) -Pair of Occ. Clowns -Yellow corris wrasse (favorite fish) -Yellow clown goby -Pearly jawfish Inverts - 3-4 Narrsarius snails - 3-4 Trochus snails - Cleaner shrimp Clams (later after tank has matured) -1 Maxima -1 Deresa The tank is about 24x24x24 Any thoughts much appreciated

Greetings from Greece, Billy
  25. My friend has one Black and White Ocellaris Clownfish for around 4 to 5 years now (caught in the wild as one), just moved it to a 40-gallon tank. I am thinking to get her another clownfish, but not the same one. Maybe a Black Snowflake or a Black Ice Snowflake, will they be able to get along together? I like the gold nugget maroon clownfish but its different species and maroons are pretty aggressive. Any other good clownfish recommendations? Thank youuuu ! P.S. I do not know much about clownfish.
