One of my favourite things about Nano-Reef.com is looking back at old photos and write ups of My past and present tanks. So I have to start a journal for this one. I had originally planned to set up a 40 Breeder but I am incredibly impatient and drilled the holes for the overflow in the wrong spot. That’s what I get for rushing. While deciding on what to do a deal came up. A used cadlights 70. Complete with Radions and Mp10’s. I could not pass it up. I picked it up last week. Sold off some equipment I didn’t need and got to work cleaning it up. It was COVERED in coraline algae. It took a lot of vinegar and elbow grease but I got it done. Let’s write out the planned equipment and livestock lists! Equipment Tank: Cadlights 70 Artisan ii Lights: Radion XR15 x2 and Radion XR30 Skimmer: Nyos Quantum 160 Flow: Vectra S2/M2. MP10 x2 Heater: 200w Jager Controller: Neptune Apex Planned Livestock I will be adding only LPS coral to this tank. Starting from scratch. Big Mama the Clarkii Blue Spot Jawfish Various Damsels Various Wrasse Kole Tang Various shrimp Clean up crew I always go with trochus snails, nassarius, emerald crab, and hermits (I love hermits). Stay tuned for photos of the process.

With limited space in a nano, chalice coral spacing is an issue. My understanding is that there are 10 or so species of corals collectively called chalice corals. I also have heard that varieties within like species are not aggressive towards one another. Thus far I’ve identified the following species: Echinophyllia sp, Enchinopora sp., Oxypora sp, Pectinia. QUESTION 1: what other species fall in this category? QUESTION 2: what chalice corals do you have that are living harmoniously side by side? QUESTION 3: how do you speciate the different chalice corals?

Hi Friends, I very recently received this Alien Eye chalice, and it is my latest addition to the tank! It is a gorgeous coral. That being said, I wanted to confirm the following - Is the spike-like pattern normal? Or is the coral trying to signal something? My parameters are all good, because the other species are doing fine. Could it just be that the coral is still in settling-down mode? It is only 2.5 days as of this moment! Any pointers would greatly help! Thank you all for your valuable inputs.

I have a 20 gallon tank that has been set up for about 6 months and have been having great success with soft corals so I decided to pick up a trumpet coral and chalice frag 2 days ago. The trumpet seems happy but the chalice looks concerning. I know they don't like a lot of light while they adjust so it is at the bottom of my tank out of the direct light from my led lights (they are not particularly strong anyways). right away i noticed a little bit of brown discoloration on the side of the coral. over the couple of days I've had it the brown area seems to have become more distinct although no skeleton is exposed. I know there's a lot of variables at play (water params, parasites, lighting, handling) but what I want to know is whether this is a sign of a serious problem. The brown spot hasn't really progressed noticeably in the last day so is it a cause for concern? Although I do want to know why this happened I'm more concerned with just knowing what is happening and how worried I should be.

[FS] Centerpiece chalice and encrusting Pavona! Boston, MA Local only
Butchy21 posted a topic in Livestock Classifieds
Looking to make room for other additions to my reef tank so I am selling two large corals. The first is a hollywood stunner chalice, approximately 6" x 5" in size- probably 400-500 eyes. The second is an encrusting SPS pavona approximately 6" x 4". I would prefer to sell these two pieces together since the pavona has encrusted onto the rock that the chalice is on. Comes from a healthy and pest free tank! PM me an offer. Located in Cambridge, MA- pick up only. -
Any way to remove a plate-type chalice from a rock without breaking it?
Butchy21 posted a topic in Coral Forum
So my tank has grown in a ton and I need to make some room for new additions! I have a giant hollywood stunner chalice that is starting to shade out corals below- so I'm probably going to be selling it. The problem is that it grows in a plate-like style and is pretty brittle. Is there any way to get the chalice off the rock or should I just sell the chalice with the rock? Similar question with my green hairy encrusting pavona- Looking to sell to make space but it has grown over two touching rocks. Any easy way to remove the pavona or do I just have to sell the rock with the coral? Chalice is up top and the pavona is in the top left of the tank. Any ideas would be great!
