    Custom 90 gallon start up

Well I took the plunge a while back and decided to up my game to a significantly larger tank then my 10g nano. The new tank is a 90g with a 40g sump. It’s been a process as it was cut custom built from the ground up but thought I would post a few pics as it finally ready for sand, rock and water.

    Glofish tank to pico reef

Starting up a new build and I’m pretty excited about this one. I finally pulled off a zero water change nano tank over the last year so now I’m going smaller. Starting with some skeletons from my display refugium. Light is lominie which the form factor I love (tank is 3.5 gal I believe. Litterally says Glofish on it but it was free so…. Just adding a little bacteria and growing a little macro algae the last few weeks. Maybe I’ll find some cool shrimps at the lfs to add in a few more weeks if all is going well. No inhabitants at the moment. This is week 3.
  3. New to the forums - I've been keeping reef tanks since 2003 and didn't spend much time in forums over the last 5 years or so. Found that Reef Central has minimal engagement for smaller tanks and found this forum in their nano forum. Seems like I never take too much of a break since starting in 2003 - there were +/- 8 months in 2008 then the break from June 2018 until now when I sold my 120 due to a move to W. Des Moines. Really wasn't planning on starting again but I found a sweet deal on this tank and my wife and daughter really love clowns so here I am. Stumbled access someone selling their 29 gallon Oceanic Biocube for $50 on FB market and couldn't pass it up! Came with tank, stand, hood, heater, pump, In Tank filter, 30 pounds live rock, 10 pounds sand, test kits, 2 new replacement Coralife power compact bulbs (10k and 420 actinic), food, etc. It's not perfect as the glass has noticeable scratches on all three sides and the hood is missing the cooling fans (but $50??). I have fans and a new 12v power supply on order as the control module is so corroded I can't repair the failed circuitry (full bridge rectifier). I do have 2 leftover black box Chinese LEDs from my 120 but I don't think I want to retrofit. My plans are 4 - 6 fish (clowns, Dotty Back, goby - undecided on specific colors) and small clean up crew. Corals will be softies and possibly LPS - looking forward to finding zoas and frogspawn (hopefully some of my old stock) but probably not SPS. Not going to run a skimmer and want to keep it simple with a 5 gallon water change each week with new filter floss - we'll see how long that lasts! I purchased the tank 12/23 and cleaned it up Christmas Day as it was 60 degrees outside. Cleaned up well with a vinegar and water solution. Rinsed the existing sand until it was clean and sprayed the rock with a garden hose. Previous owner stated the tank had been cycled (drained day I picked it up) but the rock didn't have any growth or critters so I'm comfortable it was clean and pest free. Thursday the 26th I set it up with fresh Instant Ocean (160g for $32 @ Petco), 20 pounds Carib Sea Arag-Alive sand (never purchased live sand before) existing sand, small amount of rock that came with it and the rest of the rock from my stockpile. After 8 days I've done 1 water change and measured the ammonia up to 2 and now at 1 - probably another week or so to cycle before fish. Video of the tank: Video of what I found in the hood: Eric
  4. Review - The product itself is amazing. The stand is sturdy, UV coated, sturdy hinges, great cutouts and just looks super modern. The tank itself also looks very sleek and very well built. Also for a great price. A few cons would be I wish they provided the white AI prime light with the plus version since their stands are white. Also, the stands do not come with directions and they don't have specific directions for the cube 20 stand so someone that isn't handy like me it took a long time. Also customer service are hard to get a hold of, for me both email and voicemail took days to get a reply and you can't get anyone to answer. With that being said I don't regret my purchase I love the product and can't wait to start filling it up with goodies. Build Thread/Stocking Ideas - This is my first fish tank ever, never even owned a beta lol. So i may have a bunch of failures. Rocks - 20lbs life rock shapes (aquascaped with marco cement) Return pump - stock pump (may upgrade to sicce 1.0 to try and get it very quiet) Flow - Koralia 425 Heater - 2 x 50 watt eheim jager inTank media basket (filter floss, seachem matrix, chemipure blue) Tunzee 3155 ATO (5G jug) DJ switch that is labeled. Big Temp monitor that will alert me if temp gets off. BRS 5 stage RODI Unit Stocking 1 clown fish 1 yellow spotted goby/candy pistol shrimp pair 1 purple fire fish Lots of rock flower Anemones Mixed reef Sexy shrimp/Porcelain crab and other cuc Tank has been cycling 1 week, hopefully can add a fish in a week or two. I'm probably in the wrong hobby since I don't have patience lol.

    Paul’s BioCube 29

This tank was up for about 2.5 years previously but due to a home renovation had to be torn down. It wasn’t anything special, a candy cane, 2 frogspawn, some zoas and a lot of mushrooms (hitchhiked on with the zoas). But it was self sustaining. I changed 5G water every other week and things were doing really well. But new new flooring meant it had to be moved. Into a 29 gallon holding tank the contents went. 2 clowns, a bi-color blenny, skunk cleaner, 25lbs of rock, and lots of vermetid snails. Some elbow grease, some vinegar, and a jet stream hosing...it’s clean. Mostly. With Th the vermetid snails all over the rocks, I decided to just mix those rocks, and got 20lb of Caribsea Life Rock shapes. I toyed with going barebottom, buuut it’s an LPS tank. Flow isn’t a massive requirement, though some is needed. I decided to go with Caribsea Arag Alive Fiji pink. I dosed the tank tank yesterday with 1.2ml of ammonia, a bottle of birospira, and 5ml of Microbacter7. Tested today and it’s zero with a trace of nitrites. Dosed again today with 1.2 ammonia, and tomorrow after we get back from Wildwood, I will test again. I actually may be able to move my clowns into the tank I think. I am also dozing 5ml of Microbacter7 daily. Prior, I had an aquamaxx HOB-1, and it’s a great skimmer. But this time, I think I will go the five route and skip the skimmer. I have the InTank Media Rack, and will be getting the InTank Fuge Basket. I am leaning toward the JBJ Nano Glo but there are some $15-$20 grow lights on amazon that I may be able to stick to the back and use that instead. I have time though to figure that out. If anyone has thoughts, please post them. I toyed with getting an mp10 but think I am going to try to split the return using a Y valve and loc line. If that doesn’t give me enough then I will look into a used mp10 and run lagoon. As for my plans...the 3 fish I have. And I think I will add either a pink streaked wrasse or a mccoskers wrasse and a small diamond goby for sand maintenance. Other sand maintenance creatures will be 6 or so nassarius snails, some dwarf cerith snails, 3 or 4 nerites and 2 scarlet hermits and of course a skunk cleaner shrimp. I also have 2 Green Bubble Tips that will go in before any of the corals i have go back in so they can find their home and get settled. for salt, I will be using ESV only on this following the cycle. And the light will will be a Noopsyche Pro II. I think the aquascape turned out pretty badass. Very happy with it!
  6. Started this a bit ago, as was gifted a nice Fusion 20 all in one, and figured I put up a build thread. It's a surprise for my young son; i'm secretly building it up in the basement and then will move to living room on his birthday, octobe 30. We're moving and buying a house in the next year or so and install a much larger custom reef build, but given the tank was a gift, i couldn't wait to get a head start and the little man will love it. He goes to the local zoo and aquarium at least once a week. Fusion 20 Aqua C Remora S skimmer CPC refugium Current Marine Loop system for lighting and wave making. Glass top to limit evaporation, although i havev a tunze top off. Dual heaters with cut off controller for safety. Redundant pumps for return. Just putting fish in. Some are so small, i spent one night getting a couple out of the return and had to put up screens on the return slots. Butterfly fish ("Mick Jr.:) is eating fresh clams and live blackworms that i am keeping the fridge. Trying to get him to switch to mysis. Urchin munches nori everyday. Questions: 1. Any suggestions for getting butterfly fish to take frozen food? 2. Given the landscape and lighting system, how low can i place some SPS, and anemone, and LPS? Suggestions on placement? 3. Water change routines? I was in this hobby for a decade ago for about a decade. I read now that nitrates are being handled differently? I did put chaeto in the refugium. 4. Stand recommendations? 5. Wave making setting recommendations? 6. Suggestions on getting some fish to take pellets? Thanks for looking!
  7. This build started with an old standard 10-Gallon aquarium I had laying around from another project. The tank was pretty dirty and the top rim was damaged. Rather than throw it away I decided to up-cycle it into a nano-reef. I cleaned the tank up and decided to remove the broken black trim along the top. Rather than replace it I decided to leave it as a faux rimless tank. I collected a few other odds and ends laying around and then made a few small purchases for the remaining items. Here is a list of what I am starting with: Tank: 10 gallon Aqueon Aquarium (top black plastic trim removed) - $12.74 https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/fish/fish-aquariums-kits/aqueon-standard-glass-aquarium-tank-10-gallon Filter: Aquaclear 70 HOB (will eventually modify to include built-in refugium) - $49.99 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000260FUW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Heater: Tetra 50w with Electronic Thermostat (not sure I like not having an adjustable thermostat. I may swap this out later) - $14.94 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OQO69Q/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_oHzUEbM8R031A Wavemaker: SunSun JVP-110 (left over from another project. Kind of cheap so not sure it will last but good for now) - $9.64 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CXDOQWA/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_6NzUEbPEKD20Q Light: AquaKnight A029 (Budget friendly. Pretty impressive for the price) - $63.98 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0727V8C5Q/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_lPzUEb9W0T4YY ATO: Gravity fed ATO Water Filler (I plan to purchase a more sophisticated ATO in the future however to be honest this thing is pretty efficient) - $13.95 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RSQB1H9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Substrate: 16 lbs Natures Ocean Bio-Active Aragonite Reef Sand - $12.50 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018CG3FU/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_fRzUEb7HW9FA0 Hardscape: 12lbs Live Rock - $30.00 Bought locally from a Reef Hobbyist Salt: 3lbs Instant Ocean Sea Salt - $6.99 https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/instant-ocean-aquarium-salt Tank is currently filled and cycling. Because the tank is rimless I am loosing a lot of water through evaporation. The ATO helps but I may look to construct a cover to help slow it down. I will post some pictures soon. More to come. Thanks for following. JTR

    IM Nuvo 20g Build Thread

Build Thread! Start Date: 7/31/2019 Most Recent Pic: (12/14/19) Hardware: Tank: Innovative Marine Nuvo 20 AIO Filters: 1 Media caddy, 1 200 micron filter sock, 15 lbs dry rock, 18 lbs live sand Heating: 150 W heater Cooling: AC Infinity AXIAL 1225 Fan - Amazon Temp Controller: Inkbird controller ATO: Tunze Osmolator 3155 RODI Unit: Liquagen 4 stage (tds of city water is around 45 originally) Lighting: 1 Kessil a160 Blue with mounting arm Lighting Controller: Kessil A series spectral controller Return Pump: Stock ~250 gph Testing: API nitrite, API Ammonia and API Phospate, Refractometer, American Marine PH Monitor and probe, Inkbird Temperature probe, Hanna Checker Alk, Salifert Ca, Salifert Mg Possible additions: I want to add an MP10, but have been looking for a good deal on Craigslist. I may add an algae scrubber, they seem pretty hype. Dosing pumps may be needed once I dial in my corals needs. Livestock: Fish: 1 Clownfish, 1 Orchid Dottyback (deceased - jumped out of the tank the first day) Corals: Softies: 1 rhodactis mushroom, 1 neon green toadstool leather,1 ricordea florida mushroom (orange), Utter Chaos Zoa, LA Lakers Zoa LPS: 1 Aussie elegance coral, 1 Blastomussa Wellsi SPS: 1 red montipora cap Inverts: Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemone, Fire Shrimp, 1 astrea snail, 1 trochus snail, 1 narcissus snail Maintenance: -25% weekly water changeover -feed a variety of foods -Add a bit of phyto (not sure how helpful this actually is, probably will not purchase again) Diary: Update 1: Tank Startup - Used dry rock and live sand, in a previous tank I had gotten aptasia and it was a nightmare so I endeavored to keep this tank as pest free as possible. I have really liked the dry rock so far. I got dry rock with a nice purple finish and was able to cement it into a cool arch. I used the NYOS reef cement and it was a nightmare to mix though it did work in the end after much frustration. I originally wasn't planning on using a temperature controller but stumbled onto one for free and holy cow is this thing nice. 100% worth the 40 bucks it would have cost if I bought it. I used dr tim's one and only for cycling + ammonium chloride and was pleased. It wasn't instant, my tank still took about 20 days to cycle, but I could very clearly see the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates changing as I tested. Update 1: I added my first fish (clownfish) after a month and then added a piece of macro algae a week after. When I added the macro algae, it may have brought a pest because my fish started losing scales near his gills. I freshwater dipped him and treated the tank with prazi pro, thinking it could be flukes. He has been great ever since and the tank has been happy. Update 2: I went to a Coral Farmers Market recently and picked up a few goodies. I want to see how a variety of corals will do in my tank so I got a Blastomussa Wellsi as well as two different kinds of Zoas. I probably will not add anymore coral for a while. I recently purchased a Hanna Checker for Alk and will be using Salifert test kits for testing Ca and Mg. I want to dial in where I'm at and get a handle on how levels change over time before adding anything else. The tank had some diatoms form. The sand is a bit browner now and there is some on the rockwork as well. I reduced the amount of time the light was on each day. I was at 12 hours which was way too much. I may reduce a bit further from 9 hours down to 8. I have a gradual ramp up throughout the day currently and keep the spectrum mostly blue. The Salinity and temperature have been extremely stable and Nitrates are remaining low week over week. Everything in the tank looks like it is doing well so far, though. I added a Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemone! I absolutely love anemones and a friend gave me a good price on a 1 Inch diameter foot. It has been a bit brown the first few days, hoping it colors up nicely after it gets over the shock of moving. My clown has not hosted it yet. The zoas are just doing ok. Not sure where in the tank to put them. They are open, but don't look as vibrant as at the store. I added an orchid dottyback, but he jumped out of the tank the first night 😞. I will need to get a lid if I want to keep any fish that are in danger of jumping. I would love any feedback and suggestions. Picture Appendix First time adding water shot: 8/29

    40 gallon breeder build

Hey all, this is my first post to this group and I'm hoping to get some help. I have kept freshwater fish for years and recently (a year ago) go a 20 long tank and started a reef. I love it, everything is thriving and I'm looking to upgrade to a 40 breeder (maybe a little bigger). Right now my 20 long has a HOB on it and I was wondering if I could get away with a HOB on a 40 gallon or would I need a sump? The filter I use and love is an Aquaclear 70 and I'd probably put an Aquaclear 110 on the 40. Also, any good info on stand builds for this size? I'd like to build my own so I can add magnetic border pieces for easy access underneath (If I did a sump). Thanks
  10. Started this tank on March 30, 2017 with stock pump and filter sock, koralia nano from previous tank, and 5 lb of LR, and about 8.5 gallons of saltwater to start. The tank is almost a year old now and some upgrades have happened. (will take some better pics with the camera later) Equipment -IM Ti ATO (going to tunze nano ato) -Ran a kessil a80 for 11 months before going to a radion (diffusion kit/rm -Jbj 1/15 hp Chiller with 1.0 return -Sicce 0.5 return - inTank Media rack with 2 filer floss on top, seachem matrix, bottom two filter flosses -inTank universal media skimmer -was running a IM desktop Media Reactor with carbon but since the RMS mount is fairly big i had to remove the reactor (don't mind that because its freaking study!) So in turn I have a Fudge basket that I might run with more matrix in it if the tunze 9001 doesnt work out (coming) -MP10 wQD -inTank Frag rock (2) - 5 lb LR -3 lb Sand (going to take down to less lb's till its barley covered probably -Cobalt Aquatics Neotherm 100w heater - 6.5 chemipure Live Stock: - Rainbow Acans - Duncans - Walking Aussie Duncan - Purple Tipped Frogspawn - Young Maxima Clam - Rock anemone -3 nassarius snails -3 Trochus Snail -3 Aussie young scolymia/s? LOL -Side plant is one of 3 succulents I got at a baby shower and decided to try to grow it under the XR-15 instead of my bedroom window lol, so if they switch out ever that why. Let me know if you have any thoughts on the tank! Plan on upgrading to a Lagoon 25 at some point this year I hope!
