Livestock List: Clean Up Crew: Dwarf Cerith Snails, Nerite Snails, and Nassarius Vibex snails Female Yasha Hase Goby Red Banded Pistol Shrimp ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It all started with this box of glass and this box of rocks: I decided to go with some Pukani Dry Live Rock and start out with as sterile of a system as possible. I soaked the rock in a diluted bleach and water solution for 2 weeks to remove any organic materials that might have been left over on the rock. After that I did a muriatic acid dip. I did about a 20 minute dip. I then let the rock cure in a bin in my garage for a few months in fresh water, doing 50% water changes every week or so. If I was going to do this again, I would dip for less time, with a more diluted solution. It is pretty crazy just how much the acid ate away from the rocks. I didn't take any pictures of this process, but to give you an idea of what I mean, here are some aquascapes I was playing around with before doing anything to the rock: And here is the first ever FTS: December 15, 2018 As you can see, the acid really opened up a lot of tiny little pores in the rock but it also ate away a good amount of the rock itself. I'm not saying I wouldn't do that again, but I'd definitely do it differently next time. Anyways, the tank finally got water in it, and got a Dr. Tim's fishless cycle going the first week of December 2018. Here's the Most recent FTS from the other day (sorry for dirty water, I had just finished doing a bit of scraping/cleaning): February 15, 2019 The first additions after the cleanup crew were a Female Yasha Goby and a Red Banded Pistol Shrimp combo I scored from Diver's Den. Here's a pic of the Yasha while she was being drip acclimated: I didn't get any pictures of the shrimp that were worth sharing unfortunately. And once they went into the tank they disappeared for 2 days. I'm happy to say though that today I was able to catch a glimpse of the goby coming out to snag a few Mysis shrimp I fed! She wouldn't let me get close enough to take a good picture without going into hiding, but I managed to snap this one: Well, that's pretty much all I have for now. I'll update with some more info tomorrow as far as future plans are concerned and hopefully some more pictures! I do apologize for the quality of the photos, I have a pretty old phone, and I'm not the best photographer to begin with - but I do promise to get better as I go. I know how much everyone loves pictures, and I'd like to have a nice photo documentary of this tanks progress. Thanks for stopping by! Please feel free to post any questions/comments/concerns. I'm looking forward to being part of the Nano-Reef community!
  3. TANK: 45g Shallow LIGHTING: 24" Reef Breeders V2+ w/2 Sunblaster T5's (ATI blue+ and ATI coral+) CONTROLLER: Apex Classic ATO: Tunze Osmolator FRESHWATER CONTAINER: Stock Cadlights 3 gallon POWERHEAD: Vortech MP-10QD RETURN PUMP: Reef Octopus VarioS-2 HEATER: (2) Ehiem 100w SKIMMER: Reef Octopus Classic 110s SUMP: Stock Cadlights 25 gallons (maybe) PLUMBING: Custom by yours truly. Added ball valves, check valve and break out unions. Bulk Reef Supply red pipe with grey and white fittings. I used 40lb of Billy's Reef Connection dry rock. For the cleaning method I used 1 week in RO/DI and bleach (10 gallons of water to 1 gallon of bleach). After that was 1 week in RO/DI and I added Seachem Prime twice. Then they dried out for 3 days in the sun before adding to tank. The rocks are said to have been "lab tested" and showed just trace amounts of phosphorus in the results so I trusted him and chose to not do muratic acid cure or the 2-3 months in Saltwater with GFO and water changes. Time will tell if I made a mistake or not. The sand bed is 30lbs of dry sand. I used Caribsea flamingo reef which was rinsed for about 1.5 hours until the water ran clear. So as of today the cycling process has been going on for 1 week. It's the usual......Lights off, skimmer off and 2 ppm of Dr. Tim's ammonia once and Dosing of Microbacter7 every day for the first 2 weeks and then wait. You know the drill............ i'll also be ditching the peg legs holding up my light right now. I just haven't bought the galvanized piping to build my own little arms to hang it from. FUTURE UPGRADES: Lighting for chaeto in the sump Salinity Probe and proper Apex module to run it More flow FTS: 11/14/18 FTS: 12/22/18

  12. Hey NR family, I’ll keep it short. New kitten chewed through the cord of my apex display and I was unable to fix it. Looking for a replacement at a decent price. I’d really like to get the older black model with the blue led display. If you have one lying around or that you no longer use please PM or post here. I’d really like to replace it for my tank.

  14. Fellow reefers, need your help.I’d like to set up my smart micro ATO (I’m running kalk in my ATO) to my apex and set it up as such to shut the ATO off if for some reason it kept running and my pH was going up.So far my configuration is this:PHX2Fallback: offSet: OnIf PHX2 > 8.60 then offFrom what I understand, if the module is disconnected then the ATO will just be off, which is what I want until I figure out what is wrong an why the module was disconnected.Set on means that the ATO under normal circumstances will be on, which is ok because the micro ATO has an optical sensor. My if statement says that if pH rises above 8.6, perhaps if ATO malfunctions and starts dumping extra kalk, then it will just shut the ATO off.Does this look right to everyone? Any flaws in this set up? Advice and opinions are welcome. Also, would this set up work for a dosing pump with alkalinity as well? The doser has its own program, so again if it malfunctions I just want the apex to shut it off if pH rises above 8.60 indicating that the doser might be malfunctioning. Thanks for any help!
  15. hello, selling my brand new apex jr. factory sealed new in box never opened. $210
  16. Hi. I have been researching a bit about dosing pumps, testing a couple of them, comparing features, etc. trying to find out the ideal feature set for nano reefers. I'm considering building a product prototype. I assume that most nano reefers use dosing pumps for: Carbon dosing (vinegar, nopox) Alkalinity Calcium Magnesium Perhaps additives like the ones from KZ (Zeovit). Some thoughts (product design goals): Must be able to dispense small doses with a good level of accuracy. 1ml accuracy? Adjustable flow rate from 5 - 14 ml/minute would be ideal? Good enough for the needs of most nano reefers? Must be compact. What do you think about a dosing pump that comes with a power supply for stand-alone use (with a separate timer, just like most people do with BRS and Drew's dosing pumps), but also has an optional cable for connecting it directly to the 24DC port of a Neptune Apex controller? Would that be a desirable option? Easily replaceable pump heads. Easy maintenance. Your feedback is appreciated.
  17. So after a couple of years out of the game i decided to dip into corals again. This will be my second attempt at keeping corals. Previously I invested in a 60 gal Cube with quite a nice system. I had to tear it down as I was moving in and out of apartments to often and it got to the point I just could not keep my setup the way I wanted. So I finally moved to an apartment I bought and expect to stay in there for quite a while, which allowed me to plumb my apartment the way I wanted it to handle as large an aquarium as I wanted. There are a lot of things that I still need to do to eventually install a larger aquarium but a nano-reef has always been in my heart. So a couple of weeks ago I brought my equipment from storage and installed what makes sense in a 20 gal Nuvo Fusion from Innovative Marine. I love this little tank and hope to keep here an LPS system. I have learned a lot with my 60 gal setup and I hope this challenge will take me to mature a system that looks like those amazing featured aquariums. They are breathtaking. I have been inspired from the start by Meetrokat ; Medred and more recently by this guys You guys have done something amazing. I hope to achieve your level of success.
