  1. Firstly hi all! First post on the forum and I will be dedicating this thread to my build. A little bit about me, I've been in the hobby for two years with good success on a 55G mixed reef, I've had many more years behind me in freshwater. I plan on shutting down my main display tank and setting up a this nano, mainly due to space requirements and the current energy crisis in the UK costing me too much to maintain the larger tank. The tank will be SPS dominant with maybe a couple softies and LPS Initial Equipment: Cube tank 40x40x40cm - 55L(14.5 US Gal) SeaChem Tidal 55 or 75 HOB filter. Leaning towards the larger as it will create more surface agitation for gas exchange and hopefully keep PH stable Ai Prime 16 HD Light (one for now with plans for a second as the tank grows out) Ai Nero 3 Powerhead 55w heater D-D Digital Temp controller unit D-D P1 Pro doser, dosing Tropic Marin AFR Tunze 5017 Auto Top off I had FOLR before in this cube tank and didnt have high nutrients (the opposite actually) with two clowns and a prawn goby so hopefully same this time around. Nutrient control will be a combination of weekly water changes, low stocking levels, and whatever chemical media I may add to the HOB to remove Phos or Nitrate. Fish stocking: Pistol Shrimp Orange spotted prawn Goby Tailspot Blenny Yellow coral goby The fish have been living in my current display and are all healthy and thriving. I'll also be using cycled rock from the tank shut down. Anything I am missing?
  2. Hello everyone! Windslab here. A few months ago I happened into an established Waterbox nano that needed a rehoming. I was thrilled with this opportunity as it's been about 5 years since I had to leave the hobby (school, moving etc.) and was looking for an excuse to get my hands wet again (plus, the past two years in healthcare haven't been stressful at all, so I figured now was the perfect opportunity to immerse myself in the critical care of hobbies ;)). Well, enough rambling on that front. When I picked up the tank it consisted of: Livestock- Percula orange clown Wyoming white Trochus snail x1 Red-legged hermit x1 Pale'd out Acan ~ 12 heads Leather Kryptonite Candy Cane ~ 4 heads Short tentacle torch ~ 3 heads Purple & green hammer ~ 2 heads GSP ~ 2 x 2 inches Hardware- NICREW 30w HyperLED Bag of carbon Bag of plastic bioballs (still need to transition to ceramic media...) stock return pump 100w heater Moving day went according to plan. Once home and settled, I made a new aquascape and let things settle out in the sandbed. I made sure to chisel the GSP off the top off the rock to create a nice turf island up front. A made a few changes pretty quickly. Water params were solid when I took it over, but I needed things like a lid, media housing etc. I'll list the breakdown below, but the big difference was adding an AI Prime. I started it on Saxby's at 60% (acclimating from 30%) and have since been increasing about 5% every week or two. I'm planning on dropping the whites as my blues nears peak of ~100%. Trying to find the balance between happy spa and happy lps has been a bit of a trial and error process. Anyways, here's the livestock that I've added (everything I picked up were very small frags. Trying to pack things in while not breaking the bank...) OG Mummy Eyes Chalice Green / Blue Ultra RFA 4x Red legged hermits 2x Trochus snails 3x astrea snails 1x skunk cleaner shrimp Blue hornet zoa Rainbow hornet zoa scrambled eggs zoa playboy bunny zoa sonic flare zoa spitfire zoa goblins on fire zoa Jawbreaker mushroom St. Thomas mushroom green/yellow ricordea Magician's zoa JF Lethal Leptoseries Flaming Phoenix montipora BigR Gumdrop Echinata Aussie Duncan Pink/ purple yuma Forrest Fire Digitata ASD rainbow Phoenix Montipora Poletti's yellow tipped austera Rainbow Acans With all that typed out, here are the hardware changes I've made: AI Prime 16hd Kraken Reef lid inTank surface skimmer inTank media basket (chamber 1) + filter floss (change every other day), carbon + phosguard, bioballs inTank sump cover Aqumai KPS powerhead JBJ Nano AT So far most everything is doing well. Surprisingly the most finicky thing are the magicians zoos. I've tried them in many different spots and they still aren't happy. I'm a bit worried about loosing them. Additionally the austera is up and down. Some days it looks better than others however it still has a ways to bounce back. I test Mg/Ca/Alk/Phos/Nitrates every two days and dose accordingly. My Mg has been a bit lower than I would like so I'm planning on switching to a salt with higher Mg (currently mixing redsea blue bucket). Most recent params as of 3/25 were: Mag- 1280 Calcium- 440 Alkalinity- 8.7dKH Phos- 0.02 Nitrates- 6 Overall I'm happy with the water, but ideally I'd like a nitrate of 3-4 and a Mag of 1320-1350. Over the next months I'm planning on swapping out the KPS for a Nero 3 (if I can ever get my hand on one!). The KPS has been fine, but I haven't been overly impressed. Plus I'd like to run everything through one app, but that's just me being extra. Additionally, I plan to slowly sway the bioballs over to Marinepure gems. I've always preferred ceramic media and honestly should have begun this process right when I got the tank. I would like to add a Tailspot blenny at some point soon as well. If I add more livestock, I will turn the second filter area into a microfuge. Hopefully this will regulate phosphates and keep a nice home for a decent pod population. I plan to update this regularly as I add new inhabitants! I'm still trying to figure out the whole tank LED photography thing, any tips are greatly appreciated! -Windslab

    20g Long Setup

I am currently trying to setup a 20G long reef tank. I want to have the tank FULL of lps such as torches, hammers, and frogspawn but I can't go without an anemone. I've had my 10g for about 2 and a half years and want something better. I am mainly contemplating between an AI Prime HD or a pair of Kessil A80 for lighting. Also, what would you recommend for a filter? It will be sitting on a breakfast bar as the center of attention. I wouldn't mind a small canister as long as it isn't really loud. I don't want to skimp but I don't want to be unreasonable. I also don't know where to start for a power head. Seems like everything is overpowered for a 20g. What other equipment/hardware would you recommend? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  5. Hey everyone! Newbie here looking to grow my knowledge of all things saltwater. My husband loves his large reef tank and he just surprised me with this nano tank to peak my interest. The details: we added the aragonite sand, live rock, and premix yesterday. I tested today and my ph is 8.0, ammonia is about .135ppm, nitrites 0 ppm, and nitrates 0 ppm! My husband says he thinks it takes about to weeks to break the skimmer in. So far it’s mostly filling up with water instead of bubbles. Even with nothing moving around in there, I find myself staring. I’m so excited just dreaming about all the possibilities of this tank! I think I love the fact that it’s my own responsibility and reward. Im ready to do the work!
  6. 8 days ago I put live sand, live rock, and a premixed saltwater into my 24 gallon tank. It has a built in sump in the back with various media and a skimmer. I have been regularly testing salinity, ph, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and alkalinity. PH always reading between 7.8 and 8.0 ammonia hasn’t budged from .25ppm nitrate and nitrite are both 0 alkalinity at 180 I noticed my salinity was low which surprised me since the water came from my local fish store. I played around, taking about half a gallon out and adding more concentrated mix of Red Sea salt and regular RO water. It’s at 1.0235 Per the advice of someone at the fish store I added chemi pure elite to my filtration media tonight. What am I missing here? Should I put a piece of raw shrimp in there? Am I just being impatient? I didn’t expect my tank to be cycled already, just some noticeable changes in ammonia at least. Any suggestions?
  7. I recently asked for help choosing between making my next tank a nuvo fusion 10 with budget lighting or a fluval evo 13.5. After a few more weeks of thinking I've decided that I'm really not very impressed by the stock lighting on the evo and I don't want to waste money replacing it at some point, even though I like the extra volume. However, I'm still not much closer to making a decision because I'm now also considering the waterbox 10 cube plus bundle that comes with an AI Prime HD. Basically my choice is between a fusion 10 with either the aqua knight/hipargero or possibly a par38 for lighting, which would each be about $160 USD, and the waterbox bundle which comes with the tank and prime/gooseneck for $300 USD. This will be a mixed reef that is probably more lps than anything else, although I definitely do want some sps too. I know the prime is a great light but given that this is a budget build, is the extra cost worth it? Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hopperdoggy's Pico

Hey everybody, My name is Ryan aka hopperdoggy and i have been into reefs for about 10 years now. I have always loved this website and although i didn't share any of my old tanks (i apologize) i am here to share my new pico that was set up almost two weeks ago. Right now it is probably halfway cycled. I got some some live rock and established water from my LFS to help kick start the cycle. I plan to do mosty zoas and palys with one beautiful chalice once its ready. Since the tank is so small i plan on getting some premium corals and letting them fully grow out. If I can control myself It should only have magacians, utterchaos and a mummy eye chalice (cant beat the classics) Here are the specs: UN rimless tank (3 gal i believe) aquaclear 50 modded into a fuge/ heater holder Ai prime HD (not yet hung) 25w cobalt aquatics heater livesand with about 2.5 lbs of live rock from my LFS I will keep this thread updated at things progress, until then ill continue to drool over all of your tanks...
  9. Excited to share that I will be upgrading from the Fluval Evo 5 to an IM Nuvo 10! Not sure when the tank will get wet, but I thought I’d start a tank journal for suggestions. Lighting: AI Prime HD (suggestions for light schedule?) Flow: aqueon 600 (from my 5g, 150GPH) and Current Orbit 660 wave pump Sand: thinking Caribsea’s special grade reef sand so no sand blows around the tank Rock: trying to decide if I should wait until I find the perfect rock or use epoxy to make my own rock, suggestions? Filtration: custom caddy with phosguard, filter floss, and chemipure blue nano Livestock: 1 ocellaris from my 5g and a small skunk cleaner shrimp, may pick up a small clown goby or other small fish corals: most of the corals in my 5g will be used in my 10g. I’d like the 10g to have a large zoa garden, and some more monti cap and digi. Considering making this an anemone tank with just an anemone and maybe zoas? The 5g was a great learning experience, made some rookie mistakes (not dipping coral frags) and have some nudibranchs and I believe a zoa parasite that’s causing one of my colonies to close up. Pictures are of the 5g currently and the new 10g. Any suggestions for the 10g are much appreciated!!!

    time to update lights

Fluvial EVO 12 gall about 4-5 months old tank, have some lps, zoas, and 1 frag of bird's nest and 1 frag of pocci. i use the stock light and i feel it's not enough at all. I don't see a grow at all plus the light doesn't bring any any coloration. planing to update lights LED. My budget is 250-300maximum i'm thinking about Ai prime HD, Kesill 160w or any other suggestions??? I would really love to have hydra but it's over my budget 350$ plus 70 for mount. Ai prime HD perfectly fits my budget, For kesill 160 you will have to bye controller which is additional 100$+ Do you have a good sps coral with Ai prime???? Do you have to have controller for kesil 160? Is there any other lightening suggestions within my budget ???
