  1. This story begins way back at Christmas 2018... As it was our first Christmas together, I decided she deserved a second ADA 60P. This where the addiction truly began for me... EQUIPMENT: ADA-60P Vortech MP-10 Cobalt Neo-therm 100 watt heater Aquaclear 70 Hang on Back Filter Mame Design Skimmer AI Hydra HD 26 w/HMS Mount Inkbird Controller (controls heater and clip on fan in the summer) This tank was designed for a dual purpose. The tank keeper wanted a mantis (G Smithii was at the top of the list), and I wanted a rock flower garden. We decided to compromise, like all good couples and do both. We spent the next few weeks designing and building this tank out. We wanted to make a box that would be a den, for the mantis with dual entrances, made out of PVC, but would be sturdy enough to hold 30-40 pounds of rock. We cut out our pieces of acrylic and glued them together with Weldon 16. We wanted something fun, to fill the box with, when the tank keeper suggested Gummy Bears, I knew that’d be a perfect match for rock flowers. Roughly 30 pounds of gummy bears later, our box was filled and sealed. Unbeknownst to us, that wasn’t enough weight to keep the box from floating... Once our box was made, we set out to make a rock wall for the rock flower anemones. The wall was also meant to hide our equipment. What we didn’t expect, was for the the box of gummy bears to float. So, we had to get enough rock, to weigh it down. We also had to tweak our original plan, to now make the rock wall one solid piece. The idea was that it would be heavy enough to keep mantis den from floating in the tank, or being able to push rocks out of the tank. We used Marco and Stax rock to complete our rock wall. It’s got space for the AquaClear 70 intake tube, and room for our skimmer. Our heater is also hidden below the AquaClear, and behind the rock wall. Throughout the last year, I found rock flowers are really, really, really dirty in a small water volume. I’ve also found that zoas LOVE the filth of rock flowers. So I’ve set up the base of this tank as my zoa grow out to help support my addiction to buying new corals and additional rock flowers. Also - I found the best time to get the tank keeper on board with larger rock flower purchases is when she’s had one too many craft beers and is falling asleep on the bar. (Note this is at home, not at an actual bar. She’s usually my DD when we go out.) Here’s a few shots from the tank this evening.
  2. Hello everyone, Was hoping everyone could provide me with some tips and suggestions on a new 10 gallon build I want to do. Right now here is my plan: Tank: UNS 60S shallow aquarium (24x14x7) Light: Kessil A80 Rock: Stax and marco rock Heres where I need help. I’m stuck between filtration options. I would like to build a sump, but have never owned a tank with one, and don’t even know where to begin with overflows/drilling/plumbing let alone building the sump itself. Other things I am considering is using a canister filter and cleaning it often, or just an AC. I just love the clean look of this tank, and would like to be able to keep the filtration, heater and ato out of the view area if possible. Would like to keep the tank as close to looking “empty” looking as possible. I also would like a solution that won’t kill my wallet, however I know this hobby and am expecting it to at least get a beating. My stocking plan: bit of LPS/Softies 1 fish (either Azure Damsel OR a pygmy angel) 1 blood red fire shrimp I am attaching a picture of what the tank looks like, and the second picture is the aqua scape I want to follow. I basically want a shallow lagoon look, with lots of open sand areas. Essentially what I am asking is what would you guys do with this tank? How would you filter it? Any suggestions will be appreciated and the more detailed the better! thanks in advance!!

    IceCap K2-50 Yea or Nay?

Hello all! First post here on NR 🙂 Was just hoping for any input/advice/experience regarding the IceCap K2 50 skimmer. I'm starting up an ADA 60f (around 8 gal) along with a custom sump (another 10 gal) and want to get a decent skimmer. Will be moving most of the equipment from an old tank I have to the 60f. Everything about this tank: Stocking: 1 x Frostbite clown, 1 x Nearly Naked clown (idek if this is right) - These guys have been in a 7gal cube now for more than a year, so just changing tanks because I love the shallow ADA Pump: Sicce Syncra 1.5 Overflow: Glass Holes Super Nano Con Dientes Return: Glass Holes 0.5" Return Plumbing: in the process of getting some colored PVC 🙂 🙂 🙂 Wavemaker: Sicce Voyager 270GPH Light: AI Prime HD I also attached a picture of the current tank the nemos are in. Light is from amazon and am just using an eheim canister filter. I've read up on some other threads and it seems to me that people generally like the icecap. With that said, I'm super open to considering other skimmers. What I've also considered are: BM NAC 3.5 Reef Octopus BH-50 However, I'm afraid that if the skimmer is TOO overkill for a tank my size, then the collection might be poor? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ALL YOUR INPUT!!! 🙂 And thank you so much to all of you as I've learned so much from reading dozens of threads. I hope to make another thread documenting the process too.
  5. Hey everyone, it's been a few years for me being out of the game and I want to get back in! I was wondering if anyone knew of someone who would do some custom acrylic work for me so that I can convert an ADA 60-F into an AIO. I need the AIO part made out of black 1/4 acrylic and I also need a media basket made. Any help is appreciated, thank you! 7 in tall x 3 inches wide x 9 inches long is the size of the AIO I need.

  7. Hello Everyone! I've been reef-keeping for about four years now (after a long stint keeping tropical before that) and having had a 180L mixed reef, a 60L nano, I have now gone even smaller with a 30L system. I haven't kept a reef build before so I hope I can keep you guys posted on this system's progress (assuming there is progress)! Like many, I'm sure, I started off by reading up about reefs on many sites and eventually, now, I only really come onto NR! My early inspirations were all from this forum, mainly TeenyReef's 10G, ninjamyst's 12G, yoshii's 10G and Justind's 9G. Subsequently, I fell in love with the shallow style tank and East1, Scorched, 4x5 and Brad908's builds. Setup: Display- ADA Cube Garden 45-F (45 x 16 x 24cm); Sump- custom acrylic four chamber sump (approximately 25 cm cube); Overflow- a Scorched style direct drain/ return system with a 1" drain and 1/2" return; Return pump- Jecod DCT-1200; Heater- Aquael 50W Easy Heater; Circulation- will probably add my MP10 from the 60L; Light- at present nothing but my Ai Prime will be mounted onto this in the near future (when the 60L is closed down); Mechanical filtration- 4" filter sock; Bio filtration- maybe 2kg live rock and future plan to add chaeto chamber to sump; Chemical filtration- None planned; Doser- single dosing pump (TMC) planned for Kalwasser addition; ATO- TMC single switch; Cabinet- IKEA! My plans for livestock are actually just two or three corals which I hope to nurture to eventually fill a lot of the open space. In fact I only started this tank to keep some of my old favourite colonies (or frags of) when I sold almost all of my 60L system off and realised I'd miss reef-keeping too much! My cleaner shrimp from the 60L (already two years old) will also probably see out his days here and hopefully a porcelain crab if I can find a pretty one. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
  8. This can be sound stupid , but i got this stupid idea of putting ADA bactor 100 additive underneath the tank bottom and build deepsand bed on top of it , ADA describe bactor 100 like this ' " Bacter 100 is a substrate additive, containing more than 100 kinds of substrate bacteria in a dormant state. By sprinkling on the base substrate, it can make an ideal substrate environment. By applying on top of blue green algae, it suppresses the growth of it." will it help to grow helpful bacterias on sand bed , will these bacteria survive on saltwater ,, give me your ideas about my stupid methode

  10. Hello all, CURRENT FTS: I'm new to the hobby of saltwater aquariums and wanted to share the progression of my build with you all! I've done freshwater planted tanks in the past and finally made the decision to play in the big leagues and start a reef tank! Here is my equipment list so far: ADA 60F 8.6 Gallon rimless aqaurium 30 gallon DIY sump with refugium and liverock sections Mame medium sized overflow Eshopps Eclipse Overflow Box (small) Kessil A160WE 40W LED Light DIY Protein skimmer Bubble Magus Curve 5 Protein Skimmer 36W LED Grow light for Refugium Top Fin circulation pump Ecotech Mp10 Koolermax AR-122 6-stage RO+DI Quietpro 1.2 Controlled Pump DIY float valve auto top off Jebao dosing pump Since I live near the coast in Southern California, I will be using mostly natural seawater filtered through filter floss and activated carbon for my water changes (except for after rainstorms when runoff destroys the water quality). I cant wait to have the tank up and running! There are many pictures to come so stay tuned! (Yes, I know the filter sock is the complete wrong size)
