In the last 4 years, my 20g tank has logged more than 2,000 miles in 5 different moves, has visited 8 different states, and two of those moves were half way across the country. Needless to say, this has taken quite a toll on the tank. It's been up and running in some state for some eight years now, and finally has a permanent home now that we've bought a house. With any luck, things will flourish, uninterrupted. SPS have been back in the tank a few months now and am hoping I won't have to sell them off and move again like I usually have to do! Equipment: Tank: Standard Petco $20 20g Tall - 24x12x16. Lighting: Radion XR30 Pro (G1) with upgraded wide-angle lenses @ 45% (Schedule: https://pastebin.com/c1PYMT4y) Flow: 1x MP10 and return pump @ 100% in Yellow Mode Sump: DIY 10g Standard Petco $10 10g - 20x10x12 with 2 chambers Skimmer: Bubble Magus C3.5, offline for months and my coral is loving the extra delicious organics ATO: Avast Marine with Aqualifter Temperature: Ranco 111000 Inkbird Controller connected to old titanium heater Overflow: HOB CPR CS50 with Aqualifter siphon and DIY float valve relay on return to prevent accidents Dosing: 1/4 - 1/3 gallon of 27.5% 42% saturated Kalk in RODI per day. Keeps Alk between 8.4 and 9.2 over the course of about 20 days., between 6 and 7 to slow down growth to make it manageable. Live Stock: Fish: 2x Percula Clowns and one Hoeven's/Melanurus Wrasse Coral: Acros, Montis, Acans, Favia, Stylo, Birdsnest, Merulina, Blastos, Chalice, Platygyra, Ricordea, Zoas, Palys Nems: Two RBTAs (mother and baby), 2x Mini-Maxis Everything has been set up for ease of maintenance and being able to run for a week if I'm travelling since the amount of time I have to dedicate to my reef comes and goes - after 8 years, I just want it to be as simple as I can get - no more experimenting with gadgets or fads, just simple, basic husbandry. It seems the only time I am working on my reef these days between work, climbing when it's warm and snowboarding when it's cold is when the weather is crappy and I'm stuck inside. Good evening, I am new to the forum but not to reefing. I am a member of Reef Chicks on Facebook, and have family members in the hobby as well. I have more experience with freshwater (about 8 years), but a year of saltwater reef hands-on experience. I am here to ask you guys humbly for frag/coral donations. Or fish. I’m located in Wisconsin. Advice on local reef groups is also appreciated! I had to disassemble my tank (Waterbox 10 cube AIO with fluval external filtration and UV sterilization) due to moving. Previously, I was getting into the hobby and am particularly fascinated by wellsos/trachy. I am currently expecting a child, but wanted to restart my tank to assist with stress management. However, I unfortunately lost my other corals due to a pest that came in with a shipment I got off of either eBay or ORA (it looked to be some sort of eunicid worms, along with other coral-eating flatworm parasites). Parameters were perfect, lighting was good, and everything was thriving, but then one day something had taken a chunk out of my clownfish’s head (I had no CUC, and two clowns and two mandarin dragonets). It was pulled toward the sandbed. A week and a half goes by, and my other fish die in the same way Needless to say, it was a bit sad and disheartening l, especially since I invested so much (time, effort, and resources). I recently moved and now have the opportunity and space to start anew. The only issue is, I’m hesitant to buy online again because of what happened. I don’t know of any local groups, and my family member just started her tank so has no extra frags. I was hoping to ask for frags/coral and any live donations. I would really appreciate it and would donate frags I grow in the future to reciprocate the donations to grow the community. Please forgive me if this isn’t an appropriate post, but I saw others asking for donations and figured it would be pragmatic to do the same. Kind regards and thank you in advance! Hey all! Been meaning to start a thread on here but got busy with life. Anyway, I had an IM10 SPS tank in highschool and sold everything (idiot move) when I moved to Colorado for college, thinking that I wouldn't set up another tank until I had my own House. That lasted for about 3 years and here I am rebuying everything that I once had, at much higher prices, in order to set this reef up. It has been cycled and has its first first and a mushroom coral (mainly for the coralline on the frag disc, not a big softie guy), but I have not taken updated photos yet. I will take more photos when I get home from school and work tonight if I feel up to it. My plans for this tank are everchanging, and I am unsure if I want to commit to another SPS dominated nano yet, but I'm sure it will happen eventually. For now I am planning on picking up a birdsnest at a local swap this weekend to use as a canary SPS so to speak, as well as nice encrusting coral for my lower rocks and a few zoanthids for the edges of the tank. Equipment: - Tank: IM 25 Lagoon - Stand: custom built stand - Lighting: noopsyche k7 pro (the bigger one lol, unsure on name at them moment) - ATO: amazon cheapo and a 5 gallon home depot bucket resevoir - Skimmer: Leaning icecap. Despite their low build quality I hear that they are little skimmate monsters -Heaters: 2 75w heaters (take one out for water changes when needed), planning on getting an Inkbird shortly - RODI: ROBuddy 50GPD - FIltration: Running a filter sock on one side and a media caddy on the other. Hi, I’m new here, coming from the freshwater side of things. 1st post on nano-reef but I’ve been creeping behind the scenes for a while, soaking it all in, research, research, so much more research. But I’m finally here, got my first salt water tank set up and cycling! Guess what ? It’s a super original tank... no it’s Fluval Evo 13.5, would have rather started with something like a 40 breeder but space and money are tight for that scale, it’s definitely size down but the ease of the Evo is what appealed to me. I know there’s literally 100+ of these threads, but I kinda kicked myself for not starting one when I set up my freshwater tank. So here it is: - AI prime HD -stock pump -VCA Random flow generator -hydor Koralia 240 powerhead -cobalt neo therm 50w heater -inkbird temp controller ITS-308S -XP Aqua duetto ATO -diy eggcrate basket for chamber 1 running filter floss, and a bag of seachem matrix Got about 12lb of the CaribSea life rock and 10lbs of their Fiji sand. the plan is to have a clownfish, a watchman goby and maybe down the line a third fish (purple firefish) and some cuc (trochus, nassirius, cerith, and emerald crab, might add a skunk cleaner or red shrimp but keeping it to two fish) and obviously add some coral down the line, can’t wait to add more colour and movement to this tank! Mostly softies A couple chalices Maybe Sps if I am feeling brave Now we wait for it to cycle...

After 2 years in college and contracting with the USAF I finally have saved enough to move out into my own apartment which allows aquariums. So I decided to do a low maintenance acan, now reclassified as micromussa, and favia focused tank with a few other corals ranging from lps to sps spread about. Equipment: Tank: Mr. Aqua 12"x12"x12" cube, 7.5gal internal volume Light: Wavepoint Blade HO, for now, If an upgrade is needed this will change Heater: Cobalt Neotherm 50 Starting "foundation": Carib Sea Pink fiji sand and dry rock with Seachem quick start dosed for 2 weeks Filtration: Aqua Clear 20. Might have to look into a bigger or better HOB filtration system. The biggest issue is space along the back of the tank with a rim mounted light. Livestock: Currently a single blue Damselfish. This picture was taken the morning before the Diatom explosion. You can see some spots of diatoms beginning to form on the rocks directly below the fish. I just got a new phone so all of my old photos of the tank when it was initially setup got lost in the transfer. The tank is currently going through the first step of the "Ugly Phase" with a full swing diatom bloom.

I recently came across Christopher Marks Pico Jar that really intrigued me to give it a try. My biggest draw back before was dealing with top offs without having any bulky equipment hanging out the side of the jar. Reefsmart developed a light that was integrated into a lid that reduced the amount of evaporation by having a tight seal, and directing the water back into the jar. With seeing how much joy our display tank has brought my wife, I decided this would be the perfect Valentines gift for her desk at work. Steve at reefsmart.com was amazing to deal with, providing tons of hand holding information so get me started with success. I headed out to Target to purchase my 2.5 gallon jar that would house our mini reef. I found that the clarity of the jars varied greatly from jar to jar, and choose the best that I could find. Once I got home I water tested it to see just how clear it was, and decided to head to a different store with more options to have the best view possible. I did however have to accept that there was no perfect jar out there, and settle for one that had the optimal viewing window for about a 130 degrees around the jar. Selecting the jar was the hardest part thus far. I purchased a few different air stone defusers to experiment with, and found that just the air tube itself with no defuser created the largest bubble that created the least salt creep. Other difusers also created micro bubbles that bothered me aesthetically. The other examples that I followed used just the air pump for filtration. I have always approached the hobby by over sizing, and over filtering everything I set up. I opted to put a small internal filter to be able to seed some filter floss from my display tank, as well as create a little more flow. One thing that I found to be pretty cool about the jar was that beings the sides are curved, you can actually hide the equipment on the sides as it obscures the view. The internal filter is a little to large to completely hid, but some coral placement should make it hidden pretty well over time. As for aquascaping I put 2.5lbs of CaribSea Bahamas oolite live sand in the base, but decided to add just under another pound for looks. I was able to find the perfect size rock in my sump and left it to cycle. The first light you see in the tank was a bendable air stone with light that I used to test the clarity, and experiment with the entire back of the jar being bubbles. The back of the jar beings solid bubbles was cool, made a lot of flow, but created a ton of micro bubbles. The 2nd picture is just a extra light that I had that I used for cycling while I awaited the reefsmart light. We are now a day before valentines day, and I have placed my first few corals to be ready for the day. Again for over filtration and for more color, I placed some red macroalgae. I am very excited to try this back to the basics approach to reefing. I will be completing a 50%-80% water change weekly. I will include the equipment that I am starting with. I'm pretty new to all of this. I had freshwater tanks for a while, many years ago, but didn't really understand the hobby and I didn't take the time to learn. I've always wanted a salt water tank, but stayed away because I was afraid of the the time and money commitment. A friend of mine owns a pet store. For years he's been trying to get me into the hobby because I'm always hanging out at his shop looking at his saltwater stuff. In December he finally got me. He gave me a Coralife 29 biocube. Oh boy, I had no idea what I was in for. It's been just under 6 months and it has been a hell of roller coaster, both good and bad. There's a lot to recap in just 6 months, but I'll start with where I am now. Then I'll recap everything I can recall going through/doing along the way to this point. Hopefully others can make use of all of the things that have and have not worked well for me. Attached is what my tank looks like as of April 8, 2018. Just picked up an acan frag on Friday and was wondering if a tailspin blenny and citrinis clown goby are same from it. I saw a couple of post about acans eating fish so it made me a bit concerned.

I dont know what this is but it seems to be growing or living on the side of my acans. Will it hurt them?? Ignore my serpent star. It seems to have two tentacles/antennae?

I bought this three-headed frag of acans 2 days ago. They seemed pretty happy until now. I even fed them some frozen mysis last night. but there was always this one corner that seemed to be releasing a little bit of slime into the water. That'ss what corals do when they've recently been disturbed and moved" I said to myself, and I assumed it would just wash away. Then today I got back from work and found that corner oozing lots of slime and can see some exposed skeleton! the other heads seem very happy; no recession as far as I can tell. And even the oozing head seems happy besides. But something is clearly wrong. Did I tear the polyp pacing it in the tank? Is it infected? can I blame this on water chemistry and lighting? I need a diagnosis and I feel like I need to act fast based on how suddenly this injury appeared. -
Thinking of buying a decent sized colony of Acan Echinata on sale at my LFS. Does anyone know how fast this coral grows? With/without feeding? Is it hard to care for? Basically any advice? Is it ok for someone with beginner to moderate experience with corals? (I’ve been keeping Monty Cap trumpets and frogspawn successfully for a few months)

I got this Acan frag a few days ago. Everything was fine, it was eating and looked good. Suddenly this morning, I noticed a fleshy, bubble looking growth on it. It was tiny so I didn't worry much and figured I would look into it once I got home from work. Once I got home, it was now much bigger. I can see what looks like the coral skeleton in it, but O am not sure if that is new, or if it was part of an existing head, but I feel it was the latter as there was a head there before the bubble showed up. Anyone know what this is? Should I be concerned about possibly losing my Acan? Should I worry about this also affecting my other corals (Hollywood Stunner Chalice, Copper Pavona, Green Birdsnest, Neon Green Ricordea, GSP, Blastomussa Merlitti)?

I set up Old Man Sea's Marineland Profile 5.6 Gallon Reef in January 2017 and Old Man Sea's Shallow Reef Creative Contest Pico Tank in October 2017. I greatly enjoyed both tanks but my day job became hectic and I needed to consolidate. This issue was compounded by the success of the corals in the 5.6 gallon tank – it is tall and narrow which made space for growth scarce as the frags grew. In fact, members of both the ricordea garden on the left side and the acan garden on the right side began to be crushed against the glass. There was no place to go! Thus, close to three months ago, on September 10th, I replaced the 5.6 gallon tank with an IM10, which has a much larger footprint. I simply drained the 5.6 gallon tank, placed the IM10 where the 5.6 had been, pulled the rock and coral from the 5.6 gallon tank and moved them en mass to the IM10, added fresh Instant Ocean salt water, then pulled the ricordea, zoas and green-banded gobies from the pico reef and moved them into the IM10. Presto Chango, a new reef was born. Tank Specs Display: Innovative Marine 10 Gallon NUVO Fusion Nano all-in-one aquarium, 12” x 15” x 13” Lighting: Aqua Illumination Prime HD Heater: Aqueon 50 watt on homemade controller (until system is added to Apex) Chiller: None Circulation: Sicce Synchra 0.5 return pump Skimmer: None Filtration: Stock Fusion filter sock Filter Media: None beyond filter sock Top Off: Tunze Nano Osmolator 3152 Dosing: None at present, considering addition of dosing of two-part since now beginning to dip prior to weekly water change Controller: Recently obtained an additional Neptune Systems Apex 2016 Energy Bar 832 and PM-1 module for use on this tank for control of temperature and monitoring pH to control impending dosing pumps Wet date: September 10, 2018 I moved the rock flower anemones from the pico into the Red Sea Max 170 (which already contained a number of rock flowers) and gave the mangroves to a fellow reefer. For the past couple of months I have been moving things around a bit and I have removed some corals and added several new corals. For example, the large, green monti cap, which was a tiny frag when I got it 21 months ago, was moved to the RSM170 since it had grown to nearly completely blocked all the light below it. I had removed the red monti cap a few months earlier. However, the mainstays of the 5.6 gallon tank – the ricordea garden and acan garden have been kept intact. Since this tank has a more open footprint than the Marineland, I plan to slowly replace much of the live rock with more appropriate pieces. In this full tank shots it is easy to see that there is much more room compared to the Marineland. In the top down shot the two zoa colonies just below the Montipora (green on left and red on right) are the first two corals that were placed into the tank in January 2017. Several of the others followed soon after. The Seriatopora and Stylophora on the frag shelves are new additions from a friend's reef. Both were fragged from massive colonies - she made 50 Seriatopora and 100 Stylophora frags from her colonies in her 180 gallon tank. As I replace the rockwork, these pieces will go to the rock. The blue Cyphastrea on the right side of the back wall has been with me since early 2017. It had grown to cover about half of the back wall of the Marineland. I was able to pry off just over half of it and made 12 frags, keeping this one. It is rapidly encrusting the wall as can be seen. Soon after combining the tanks, I experienced a plague of aiptasia. I noticed two of them, added Aiptasia X, then had a dozen, and soon had literally 100s of them, covering all the rocks and even a few on the glass walls. I added some Berghia to eat them but the resident clownfish and perhaps the Geometric Pygmy Perchlet (Pete Plectranthias), ate the Berghia. As a last resort, I purchased a single peppermint shrimp from the LFS – a specific specimen which I was told is a voracious eater of aiptasia – they kept it in a frag tank for this purpose. I was told it would likely eat all of mine in a day or so. I laughed since everything was covered with them. However, the next morning at least half of the aiptasia were no longer visible and a day later there were none visible. I have not removed the shrimp and have not seen another aiptasia for the past six weeks. The shrimp thus far has not bothered any of the corals, not even the zoas, but it does make the green banded gobies very nervous! I feed the shrimp and fish very well in hopes of keeping shrimp predation on fish and corals low. I will remove the shrimp at some point but I hate to get rid of it since it is so effective on aiptasia. I would move it to the RSM170 but the flame hawkfish in that tank are very happy to immediately eat any shrimp or snails as soon as they are added. At about the same time that I noticed the aiptasia, several patches of bryopsis became apparent, all on bits of rock that had been transferred from the pico. I added fluconazole and the bryopsis melted away in a couple of days. I change close to 100% of the tank water every week and did not add additional fluconazole. Thus, I have experienced rebound outbreak of bryopsis several times. I am trying to remember to add fluconazole each week after the water change to attempt to kill all the bryopsis. Livestock Fish 1 ocellaris clown Apr 2017 1 Geometric Pygmy Perchlet Sep 2017 I had a Gobiodon histrio (Goby Dillis) but it disappeared a few months ago. It was an adult when I got it so it may have died of old age. Invertebrates 4 Astrea snails Early 2017 Stomatella snails – original hitchhikers and vary between none to many tiny, to several adults then back to none and the cycle repeats. I get a bit of brownish algae on the glass from time to time - diatoms? -and the Stomatella’s love it. When they are around I never have to scrape it. The green is radioactive dragon eyes plus some polyps of a friend. The red with blue centers were collected some years ago in Florida by a person who works at the LFS. They grow prolifically - there are two of these colonies in the tank. I gave away another colony. This picture just reminds me to mention the ricordeas. Most of the ricordeas were added in early to mid-2017 but a couple were transferred from the pico contest bowl. Among those are the one on the sand (it refuses to play with the others and removes itself every time I attach it, and the very light green one on the front of the rock in the FTS. The ricordeas are much happier with some stretch out room. I like Cyphastrea's. The blue one grows wildly and will likely encrust much of the back wall in a few months. The green one was obtained during summer 2018 and sat on the bottom for several months. In the sale image it was solid green and on the bottom of the tank it was solid green. When I moved it up the wall a month or so ago, the polyps remained the same even shade of green but the encrusting body turned brown from light shock. It has now become a blushing color, beginning about a week ago, and I hope it ends up green again. The rust colored colony on the bottom has been there for around a year. It has always been very healthy. Once I add more rock it will go there. Finally, the branching Cyphastrea decadia has been on the bottom for right at a year. It has grown a little. It never opens during daylight but is always open at night. I have been trying of late to remember to target feed it once a week at night. That has caused the coloration to become much more intense, hopefully, it will also induce growth. This specimen will also go onto the rock. There is another encrusting Cyphastrea on the sand that I forgot to photograph. Next time. Acans are my other favorites. There are 9 colonies in the tank. The red with blue rim colony was purchased with 3 heads in February 2017. It now has 26. The heads have always been small on this specimen. The others have come at various later times. Here are pix of several of them. All were purchased with2 or 3 heads. I made a recent order from ASD since I wanted one of there dark colored torches (at the top of the rock in the FTS). Even more, I wanted one of the non-lordhowensis Micromussa species. This is a very interesting coral. If it does well and if the vendors still have them in a few months, I would At 20000K it is bright yellow, at 14000k (these images) it has a lot of green in it. Finally for today, ASD sent a freebie as they always do. I believe it is a Favia? If anyone knows for sure, I would appreciate knowing. -
I’m running into an issue with a few coral. I’m noticing the sun coral is beginning to bleach out and the acan is almost completely covered with algae. It used to be green but now it’s turning purplish. I tried to put pictures showing before and after. Hopefully you guys can help. Parameters are all zeroed out. 8.4 PH. LEDs are truelumen. No clue what’s going on.

hi, I got an acan with 2 heads in my nano because its so small. Does anyone know the growth rate of acans so i can put it in my bigger tank

I got this about a year ago durring a frag sale, it was in $10 for two heads/mouths. It has happily grown huge and was moved from my 8g a little over a month ago. I broke that tank down shortly after. Man I love this guy. This is just after feeding the tank, but I didn't Target feed as it got frozen last night. I try to only Target feed my corals 2 times a week. Not sure how many heads it is now, I can see about 11, but due to it being mounted sideways I can't see the back/ under side. Not sure on the name but I love them!
