Build thread - 5 gallon / 20 litre Pico reef - Kmart tank

Hey everyone,After spending the last 12 months researching reef tanks on and off, I've decided to dive in and get my toes wet as I just can't tide over the obsession any longer.Within the next 12-18 months I am planning on getting a Cade 500 (30 gallon with sump), so this Pico tank needs to be low cost as any excess cash spent here only delays my Cade purchase.I'm expecting this to be challenging due to the small size and lack of equipment, but that's fine as I think this will be a good learning experience before I make any real kind of investment into the hobby (i.e. the Cade).I'll be thrilled if I can get this little ecosystem to the point where it has some healthy soft corals, some cool inverts and maybe 1 fish at most.Equipment list:1. K-mart tank (anko brand) - 5 gallons / 20 litres - $39 AUD2. Anko 25w glass heater - $15 AUD3. Aragonite sand (dry) 2.5kg - $30 AUD for 5kg4. Carib Sea Life Rock approx 1kg - $16 AUD5. Three pieces of live rock with GSP and coralline - $30 AUD6. 50 litres of natural seawater and 10 litres of RODI - $15 AUD7. Jebao sw-2 nano wavemaker - $75 AUD including shipping (arriving this week)8. This is my new Fluval Evo 5 tank. I'm a first time saltwater tanker as I've only had freshwater in the past. I want to get advice from experienced reefers and others who have used this tank before. I have 3 inhabitants in my tank. My first question is water flow. Is my circulation pump in a good spot? Also please feel free to give feedback/advice on my setup as I like to learn and gain more experience. Thanks in advance community!

Best Saltwater fish (possibly multiple) for a 5 gallon beginner tank

So I have an empty 5 gallon tank from my betta and pleco died. And I’d like to try a saltwater tank, but I’m not sure what fish to use, how much live rock/sand to use, what equipment to use and how to test salinity and such. Any recommendations? Or is that to small of a tank? -
So I may as well join in the fun, I left the 365 Day Challenge tank in the office, the RSM is there and my Clowns are getting annoyed with me having my hands in the tank constantly. I also went ahead and purchased some corals that i have been watching for a long time now and noticed that the store has a Covid19 Sale I jumped on the sale. (Who doesnt like 25% off corals?) So I decided to have a play around with what i have at home and set up with spares. Tank: 5 Gallon L40xW20xH26 (15.75x7.75x1025) Light: undecided Heater: 25W Adjustable Flow: Hydor Pico Evo-Mag 180 with RFG Nozzle Themes: Euphylliadae Corals and Floating Reefscape Rock: 5 lbs Dry Baserock Sand: 10 lbs Samoa Pink So I painted the back black on this one, hopefully increasing the contrast with the corals that i will place in here, nice not to see any/much light spill as well The internal filter is in the shot to try and remove as much cloudiness from the water as possible

Hi! Just a brief background on me: I've kept discus, I actively breed corydoras and I have over 1,500 gallons worth of aquariums, and I've been keeping fish for 5 years now. I've always just had freshwater and brackish water, but I'm interested in starting a 5 gallon pico tank (it's the only free tank I have after my betta passed at 8 y.o.). I've a few questions that I'd like to have answered. 1.)What fish/inverts would be good for a pico tank at my level of saltwater knowledge? 2.)What would you estimate to be the baseline price for the tank? I've already got aragonite, the tank, a skimmer, and a sump. 3.) Would it be possible to keep corals in the tank?

Latest updated photo 10-20-19: Hello friends, this is my new project, it's a 5 gallon Topfin engage. This is day 2 and live rock is in, but the sand wasn't live. I don't really have mapped out plans for it so we'll see it evolve as the days go on. Right now i'm going to wait a few weeks maybe a month for the system to cycle. So far I haven't added anything non stock to the aquarium, besides heater. I'm using Chemipure and Purigen for filtration. I think I need more interesting looking rock, but for now it'll do to break in the system. I prefer soft & lps coral so that's going to be the main inhabitants, fish-wise idk yet (prob clowns). I'm going to update every week or so, stay tuned. First photo log 10-15-19:

Hello everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve had time to keep things updated on here. But I just finished my first year of college & hopefully this summer will yield lots of progress. My last update was during a rough time for the tank: I battled the cyano for a while and had some help from fellow members @JBM and @dpoltsdsu who sent some macro my way to help get nutrients under control. Thanks guys!! Unfortunately, I came home one day to see that my yellow goby had disappeared. He wasn’t on the stand, not on the floor, nowhere in the tank or the internal filter. Just disappeared without a trace. It was a sad day. I also decided to completely take the internal filter out of the display. I originally liked it, but I decided the rimless look would be better without it, it would give me room to spread out the rock and fit more coral, and would give just a bit more room for fish to swim. It was a pain to take out because it was siliconed to the glass & I didn’t want to empty out the tank just to cut it out, but eventually I got it off & stuck an AquaClear on the back. I spent the next few weeks collecting coral from various road trips. (The local fish store where I live has a selection close to nothing). I also dared to take in a starving bubble tip nem & nurse it back to health. 😧 Things are looking good now, and I’m super happy with my little ocean. Things are are a bit closed up in the photo. I took it this morning right as the light turned on & things started to wake up. The anemone has been a wonderful inhabitant. He’s got his bubbles back & the color is looking so much better. I also picked up a Fiji Devil Damsel who quickly became comfortable & now acts like king of the reef. My goals for the future are pretty simple. I of course want all of these frags to start getting bigger. But I also want to fill this little tank with as much life as I can, in a sustainable & humane way. I’m also still using the Current Marine Orbit LED, and it’s working at keeping things alive, but that’s about it. I have plans to upgrade the light to the Kessil A160 sometime in the near future. I'm going to be documenting my carbon dosing skimmerless using this forum. My purpose of carbon dosing is NOT to reduce nitrates but to feed the bottom of the food chain, such as bacteria. hopefully testing if the method is even possible to keep NPS alive. I also have a youtube channel so you can get a better view of my set up and all the changes as they come. The only test equipment I have is Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, and ph test from API. Currently running an aqua tech 5-15 filter with a makeshift algae scrubber. 7 watt led light , 5 gallon acrylic aquarium and currently using reef crystals salt. Current tank stock includes ,green hand leather, xenia ,ducan, 2 margarita snail 1 clownfish 1 trochus snail, blastomussa, acan lord, mini maxi anemone, torch, emerald crab, toadstool leather, yuma mushroom(i think), montipora, and a gorgonian menella(i think). Now the gorgonian is NPS and i believe i got it too soon as i just started but i will attempt to keep it alive. My dosing scheduled is 1 drop of vinegar per day which is approximately .05ml per day. I am contemplating removing filter floss and only using carbon- for chemical war- when i upgrade my filter and algae scrubber. I am a novice and the tank has only been up for approximately 7 months and this is my first reef tank. this video is the most up to date of what is currently going on in my tank. my nitrate is currently high at 40 ppm but i plan on bring it down with water changes slowly Any ideas and recommendations are welcome. any questions ask away!

Newbie Nano-er Needs Lighting Help- 5g Marineland Portrait

Not only am I a newbie to nano tanks but I'm also a newbie to saltwater aquariums. I know, I know, probably not the smartest thing to start with a nano but due to space and time this is what I decided worked best for me. Plus- I love challenges. Here's what I have/running: Marineland Portrait 5 gallon tank VicTsing 80 GPH pump Hydor 50W Submersible Heater Hydor Flo Rotating Water Deflector Attachment Nature's Ocean Live Sand 4-5lb Dry Live rock Using filter floss and Chemi-Pure Blue Nano packets Stocked with: Ocellaris Clownfish, Yellow Rose Goby, and two Nerite snails. My tank has been up and running since October/November. I kick started the cycle with a dead shrimp and after cycling for a few months my levels are great. I decided to wait for fish until after Christmas due to out of town vacations. Unfortunately the Clownfish I got two days ago has ick which I'll start treatment tonight/tomorrow. My question and part I need help with is lighting. The stock lighting on the tank is okay but I hate that it is not programmable and I'd soon like to add some soft corals. I leave the house-weekdays-for work at 7:30am and don't usually return until 5:30pm. I'd hate for the bright light to be on that whole time. Anyone have any recommendations on a light I can upgrade to that is programmable and not super expensive? Width of my tanks is 11". Hey gang, I need some input for a 5g pico I am gonna be starting. Was wanting to get some input on a what would be a good filter to use for it. Preferably a HOB type unless anyone has a better option. Was looking at the following... Aquaclear 20 Odyssea CFS 130 Hang on Aquarium Canister Filter Boxtech Aquarium Hang On Filter - Power Waterfall Suspension Oxygen Pump Small Power Filter for Rimless Tanks --- 3-in-1 Filtration System AZOO Aquarium Mignon Filter 150 Seachem Tidal This is going to be my first pico. My nano and regular system I didn't have so many questions lol. But going this small I want to make sure I do it right. Appreciate any input or suggestions. 🙂

Hey all, This is my first build thread and my first Saltwater aquarium. I have decided to switch from a 2 gallon jar to a 5 gallon aquarium because I found that the jar is hard to see into because of the thickness of the glass. Here's a picture of the tank. I'll be getting my live rock and live sand from Tampa Bay Saltwater hopefully this weekend. Heres a picture and the stats: 5 gallon aquarium ABI 12w LED light Hydor 25w heater Air pump (might get a real powerhead because of the larger water volume if you think it would be a good idea) Proposed Livestock: Live rock critters 3 blue legged hermit crabs 1 pom pom crab Sexy shrimp Zoanthids Rodactus sp. Candy cane coal or Duncan coral Had trouble finding a top so I'm using plastic wrap for now 🙊 Sean

So I picked up an Evo 5 while I was out picking up a spec III for my girlfriend this weekend. This is my first attempt at saltwater and a reef so bare with me. I am already in the progress of putting together a 40g breeder as well but I haven't gotten around to cutting the bean animal overflow yet. But back to the Evo, I created this thread to track my progress and share my experiences. Any ideas, suggestions or comments are extremely welcome. I am currently going to run the evo stock until I see that upgrades are necessary for what I am wanting. Would this make for a good display refugium? Just something I thought about today (no plans to do it anytime soon). It’s a 5 gallon Topfin tank. I was thinking of running a powerhead from the main tank into this one and filling it up with macro algae. Main tank is a 13.5 gallon. Thoughts?

Iam new to this always had a fresh water tank. This is my fluval chi 5 Gallon tank that I have converted to salt water. I have live sand and live rocks in there. Let me know what you think of this tank anything else I should be doing it's been up and running now for 4 day. Some of my rocks are starting to get pink spots on them any idea what that could be?

Hello everyone! I currently have a fluval evo 5 set up with a jebao pp4 wavemaker. I do not have any issues when I run the wavemaker in terms of sand sand going everywhere or water splashing, but I just added a Black Ice Clown today (he is small, and I will eventually be moving him to a larger tank!) and I can't seem to tell if he is struggling or not with the flow. I have attached a video, but basically when the wave maker is on, he is in that corner and when I turn it off, he swims everywhere. I feel like he is struggling? I want to eventually add some soft corals in this tank and will need flow, but is this too much flow and if it is, any recommendations for a different powerhead? https://media.giphy.com/media/DF5eUeiX55oXe/giphy.gif SETTINGS: Jebao PP-4 Lowest power, W1, and two notches above midline. Stock EVO Pump, Its at full power so about 80gph is what it says.

i have a 5 gallon reef tank and there is a film on the rock and shells and such. It flows and comes back whenever I scrub it off. I do a 50% water change every week and don't have any parameter issues from what I test for. Any ideas on what it is and how to get rid of it?
