introduction (10/28/23): hey everyone I wanted to share my progress on transferring my current 29g macroalgae tank to a newly empty 40 gallon breeder. I'm excited to do this because I feel like I will be able to keep so many more macros in the 40 than in the 29. The 29g is challenging to aquascape because of its odd vertical and skinny dimensions. I've been in the hobby for years and used to work as an aquarium maintenance tech in Dallas. I'd be happy to trade/purchase any rare macroalgae from anyone in the area. I've personally kept and set up freshwater planted tanks, nano reefs, and a few macroalgae tanks (I like to call them lagoons). I was a bit torn between setting this new 40g as a legit coral-dominant reef tank, but I think I will stick to my lagoon and keep macros and a few soft corals. I really like that these kinds of tanks are low maintenance but still look great and colorful. Plus the macros help keep the water clean. substrate choice: adding crushed coral with sand? I wanted to do a small layer of some sort of miracle mud at the bottom before adding the aragonite sand, but that stuff is so expensive I decided to just stick with sand. I did want to experiment with mixing substrates though. I bought some Caribsea crushed coral aragonite. It looks like this: I've read some forums posts just now encouraging people NOT to mix sand and crushed coral... They say it the sand will eventually settle below the CC... I have an active pistol shrimp, so I'm wondering if that won't be an issue due to the constant mixing of the substrate. I'm still contemplating mixing them just to have some more variety to the sandbed. I wish the CC had those little red Tubipora (red pipe organ coral) pieces in it! Here are some photos of my current 29g lagoon from various stages in time! Right after set-up in Spring 2021: After some growth! I was lucky that some hobbyists in the DFW area offered me some various macros to get the tank started right 👍 After moving it downstairs: After moving to a new city. I got a rose bubble tip anemone from Aquashella, which ended up eating my cleaner shrimp.. I also let the Caulerpa grow so much it shaded out the dragon's breath, which has completely vanished. I regret giving so dragons breath away when it grew prolifically! Additionally, during the move of the tank, I lost my Firefish and Bangai Cardinalfish that I've had since I set the tank up originally over 2 years ago... My buddy that helped me move the tank was a little too quick in transferring the fish into the tank after setting it up. The temp of the water was too cold and they instantly got shocked and died pretty much instantly. It was pretty tough to see that when they were still perfectly fine in the containers before that.. Anyways... Oh and I got a rose bubble tip anemone from Aquashella, which ended up eating my cleaner shrimp. Since then, one of my two LED bars went out, and instead of replacing it I figured I'd wait to transfer to the 40g. Alright, so this is my second (maybe third?) go at a planted tank. I'm going more traditional this time (the last couple were more experiments with guppies and random lighting), so this will be somewhat similar to @billygoat's Caribbean tank, minus the corals and nems - just algae, and maybe a couple of gorgs. I guess I'm taking inspiration from his tank, more than anything else. He's always been a huge help! I'm planning on lots of green and brown macros, with a few red sprinkled in for color. I've got a purple ribbon gorgonian that was in my reef that simply isn't doing well - I added it into here, and it's actually doing much better. This tank is already much dirtier than my reef, so I suspect that to be a culprit. I plan to add a few more gorgs over time. I had thought about seagrass in this tank, but I think I'll hold off. It'd be awesome, but might be best until I can set up a biotope for it. Seems to not thrive for most people, and is difficult to source (I can't find any, at least not from a company that has a good reputation). Here's the current tank, equipment, livestock, and algae: Equipment: Aqueon 40 Gallon Breeder with a Versa-Top Glass Hood Top Fin 40 Gallon Breeder Stand Aquaclear 70 HOB (to be replaced, or supplemented with more flow) Fluval 300W Heater (to be supplemented with a controller and a second heater, down the line) GLW 150W LED Floodlight Livestock: 3 Orange-Line (Spiny) Chromis 1 Dalmatian Molly 1 Scissortail Dartfish 1 Arrow Crab (possible murderer!) 1 Purple-Ribbon Gorgonian Macroalgae: Red Gracilaria Ulva This tank is still in it's infancy - it's been up for about a month, and was set up with cycled (albeit "dry") rock, so I don't have many concerns with ammonia, but it's still going to be prone to uglies. I'm going to try to order some macro in the next month or so, but I haven't seen a lot available. There's definitely some from GCE and a few others, but nothing that's really catching my eye - rather, not enough to convince me to order. I also posted in the Marketplace, hoping to buy some clippings, but no luck. We'll see how things fair! The light was an idea that I've seen used in a lot of high-tech freshwater setups, so I assume the idea will work well with surface-dwelling macros (green and brown, mostly). It's bright!. Doesn't come with any dimming options, either, so I may have to get creative with light diffusers and stuff like that. Only $40, though! I also need to suspend the light above the tank, as it gets "meh" coverage just sitting on the hood. This tank was home to some fancy guppies I raised in SW (see my last macroalgae experiment), but they didn't do so well in this tank... I'm thinking the arrow crab is to blame. I saw a gash on one of their sides shortly before it died, so I'm thinking he's going after slower fish - makes sense, seeing as the molly, chromis, and dartfish have done just fine. He may be getting rehomed, and soon! Pics! Hello fine folks of the internet. Here I am yet again with ANOTHER build. I rashly decided to sell my 78g and 65g and upgrade to something 120g and up. I ended up buying a 150g blah blah blah long story short, I messed up. Rushed things, ended up tankless. After my fish sat in rubbermaid totes for about 3 months, something happened. I did a large water change and overnight ALL my fish died. This was a nightmare, I was distraught. I did realize the next day that my large Clarkii clownfish Big Mama survived. After debating on selling her for a while I decided to get her a home. That brings us to where we are now. A 40 gallon breeder. As some of you may now my last 40B won TOTM last October. I loved that tank and everything about it. That's how I landed back into a 40B. Things will be a bit different this time. I am taking my sweet sweet time setting it up and buying equipment that will last. Equipment List: Lighting: 2x Ecotech Radion XR30W Pro Flow: Sicce Syncra 3.0 Return and Ecotech MP10 Heater: 200w Jaeger Controller: Neptune Apex EL Skimmer: Nyos Quantum Overflow: Eshopps Eclipse Sump: Acrylic Sump ATO: Tunze Osmolator Rock/Sand: Caribsea LifeRock and Aragonite Livestock Plans: Other than Big Mama and her carpet anemone. I plan on stocking this tank solely with Montipora. No softies, no lps. ONLY Montipora. As far as fish go, I want a blue spot jawfish, something to sift the sand, and a bunch of damsels that can stand up to big mama. Ill attach some pictures today. I still have a lot of the equipment to buy. I plan on having water in the tank within the next 4-6 weeks. Happy Reefing, thanks for looking..

Hey reefers, So I finally got my tank and im so excited to get started, its a 40 gallon tank. I went with a AquaClear110 Hob filter (Hang on back) an Eheim 150w heater and a saltwater refractometer for today. Im heading back to the Lfs tomorrow to get all of the other goodies like test kits, power-head, lighting, dry rocks, carbon and other stuff like that and possibly a Hob protein skimmer. Im not looking to put many rocks in and only a couple corals also not to sure what stock is going in as of right now just want to get the water parameters thing down pat. Tell me what you think about my setup and feel free to leave any advice that you think would help, Thanks

After a number of years without a reef I have decided to start with a nano. For years I had a beautiful 60 gallon reef tank when technology was so new. I went thru a divorce, sold the house(the guy said I will buy the house if the tank is included) and have waited to start again. Am planning at some point to build a large reef. But until I get some things complete on the house my wife is hoping I will wait. So we both decided a reef nano 40 gallon upstairs will be a start. I am evaluating purchasing a plug and play like Red Sea max 170, the coral life 34, a few others or building from scratch. While it is pricey initially I do like the Red Sea. Interested in any thoughts. It can be ordered with a nice dump, and the included skimmer, led's and features seem hard to beat. I plan to start slow, interested in corals and inverts, a few fun small fish. Will really appreciate any advice prior to my initial investment and build/start up. Happy to find the forum and make some new friends who love reef!!
