Amp's 35 Breeder So after nearly a year of grabbing ebay deals, three different leaking 40 breeder tanks, and accumulating a bunch of supplies I've managed to scrape-together and finish an upgrade for the 20 long. The older system had been struggling for over a year, dino's, monti eating nudi's, skeletal erosion band disease... A clownfish who has been through two two-month treatments of General Cure food, a month of fenbendazole food, too many two-week treatments of both to count, multiple mag-sulfate food courses and still has a mixture of normal-movements, thin stringy movements, and white casing movements. A pair of Rolland damsels which spawned only for the male to almost kill the female overnight in response. A year old maxima killed by a corallimorph relocation attempt... Periods of growth followed by mysterious recession, nutrient swings, a skimmer which constantly tried to perform auto-water changes... And plain old too-little space. I'd wanted a lagoon-style system to begin with, so I set out to making one. There's technically a mythical tank-size, a "30 breeder", produced by a couple of manufacturers, but it's almost impossible to actually find or buy one, instead I decided to wait for a $ per gallon sale and make my own. I really don't need the extra height of a standard 40 breeder, fish don't need it and corals getting that tall need to be trimmed anyway. I much prefer using the extra air for the light, plus smaller, easier waterchanges, and I can now have some serious wave action (I may build a standing-wave generator out of a spaghetti tupperware container and the Jebao XD). -The baffle is jury-rigged an mis-measured (I decided to make it 35 instead of 32 gallons last-minute) -The skimmer was just a K-100 body I grabbed for next-to-nothing, cleaned-up and bought a new couple pumps for -The light is the same used 120w Maxspect I bought and had refurbished for just a touch over the price of a prime HD (but now with diffuser panels backed with foil to keep light from spilling into the room) -Pump is an old sicce fountain pump (w/ 6-foot head before flow loss to 200 gph?) I grabbed on ebay for $10 new -The power heads are; the same KPS, and a new Jebao sdw-5 on Else mode -Cool random flow generator, these accelerators are awesome love it so far -Two 50W Finnex Titanium heaters on an Inkbird -A C02 Scrubber from BRS -Had some lovely glass panels made as a cover by a local glass shop, they're pretty-thick but you don't actually lose much more light doubling the thickness of float glass anyway -Oh and I made a little square from diffuser panel to eliminate any possibility of fish jumping out

I figured it was probably time I separated the build threads for my two tanks since they really are separate systems with their own trajectories. This tank, PineReef, was originally set up just to be a designated QT and grow out tank for frags coming into and going out of my other tank which I still consider my main display. My tanks seem to get named based on what wood I build the stand out of, as my other tank has been dubbed MapleReef => empresto's 18.1 gallon build - Nano Reef Journals - Nano-Reef Community. Current FTS - July 23, 2022 (not an awesome picture, but it gives the idea...) FTS August 11, 2021 Equipment Tank: 40 Breeder Light: Radion XR30 G5 Pro Sump: DIY 10 gallon Return Pump: Current USA eFlux Flow Pump 1900gph Heater: 2x 75W Eheim Jagers Cobalt Neotherm connected to a BRS wifi Temp Controller Fuge Light: 24W grow light from Amazon Flow: 3x 2x Hydor Koralias 850gph 1x Red Sea ReefWave 45 Gyre Pump Controller: DIY Raspberry Pi + Arduino solution I cooked up ATO Relay controls a TOMs water lifter pump. Fuge light on/off control. Temp measurement via 3 probes - Tank, Sump, Ambient Air Temp Relays control have control of heater circuit and can switch on a fan. Auto Water Change made possible with a second water level sensor. Basically I can hook up the pumps to the respective buckets for in/out, press a button on the RPi UI, and it changes a set amount of the water in the sump. ~2 gallons as I currently have it set. Dosing: Relays control 2x BRS 1.1ml/minute dosing pumps. Settings available via UI on the RPi. All activity and constant temp readings are recorded to a MS SQL database running on my home network server. Built an app for my phone and computer to be able to record other activity not operated by the controller and see current status of peripherals connected to the tank. It lives in the closet off my office, but there is sufficient space for guests to see it too. Setup progression: Sand goes in and fill with sw. The water has cleared.

Hello fine folks of the internet, My old thread was getting a bit too ridiculous having three builds all in one so I've decided to bring the 40 gallon peninsula to life in it's own thread. After I moved my 29g into my 65g and 15g. The 65g cracked and caused $8000 in damage and the 15g sprung a slow leak. I was close to calling it quits but decided to get a 40g breeder. It's a size of tank i've wanted for a very long time and just went for it. Saw a reeeeeeally cool soft coral reef peninsula on YouTube and decided that is exactly what I wanted. Mostly soft corals and gorgonians. Also, I wanted to incorporate some macro algae in the display. Oh and one leptastrea frag that I had leftover from my 65g so it's not completely a softie reef I suppose. Anyway here's a quick breakdown of the equipment i'm using as well as Livestock and Coral selection. I have a couple pico reefs and I've been posting my 20 gallon in my pico journal but now that it's about 6 months old I figured I'd start a thread for it specifically. I have an aquaclear 50, a Jabeao wave maker and a Current USA light. It needs about another 6 months to look grown in but it's not looking too bad. I have mostly LPS corals. The only SPS is a seriatopora on the top rock and 2 pieces of montipora on a magnetic ledge right below the light. Also covering my 40 gallon reef tank in this thread.

This tank will hopefully be filled in the next few weeks! This tank marks a lot of firsts for me so please chime in if you have suggestions. Does anyone still use Miracle Mud? I was thinking about adding it to my refugium section. I built a tray to hold some substrate in my fuge and am looking for suggestions on what to fill it with. I'm also gonna go bare bottom with this tank and hopefully grow some montis, zoas, and other encrusting corals all over the starboard at the bottom. I have a lot of montis at the top of the scape in my 20 gallon and I dont want to repeat that mistake. They are fast growers and shade out large sections of the tank. I am currently working on the plumbing which has given me a lot of appreciation for all the reefers with those immaculate color coordinated PVC works of art in their stands ( you know who you are). I am on at least the 4th home depot run at this point. Anyways I look forward to getting this tank wet and sharing the progress with everyone!

Friends, I once again require assistance. I've spent three months now trying to get a 40 breeder; the first leaked through the side, the second poured water out comically from a corner (draining it in a fountain stream), and the latest came with an internal clamshell on one edge. The clamshell is deep, still intact, and appears to have some internal microfractures/stress-lines. I want some honest opinions as I'm having a hard time justifying bringing it back for another refund, waiting for restocking, and grabbing a fourth...

Hey everyone! So this is my first post on Nano-reef but I've been a long time lurker. I've kept reef tanks in different forms for about 10 years now but due to constant moving in my 20's never really had anything that I would consider a well established tank! Now that I'm in my 30's and feel fairly settled when I saw a 40 breeder with stand pop up on my local Craigslist for $40 I jumped at the opportunity to pull out some old equipment and start my journey again! I've always loved the dimensions of 40b's and to me its the perfect nano sized tank. it has a big enough foot print to come up with some interesting aquascapes and house some interesting creatures while still being relatively affordable by not needing to go overboard on equipment like the fact that you only need one light. I used a majority old equipment I had laying around for this system. This system has been up for about 5 months now and has gone through a few changes, mainly lighting related. Equipment: Aqueon Tank Breeder Black 36X18X16 40gal Older Reef Octopus HOB skimmer, closest thing I can find now is a classic 100 Aquaclear 70 with InTank media basket running filterfloss, chemipure elite, and biomedia 165w black box led (started with 4 bulb t5 fixture and may go back to t5 if I find a reasonably priced 6 bulb fixture) 2 old hydro powerheads I had laying around (plan to pickup single crossflow style pump in the near future) Stock list: only stock at the moment are a pair of snowflake clowns, a few frags, and clean up crew (random snails and a few hermit) Future plans: As someone who has had a bare bottom tank in the past I don't know why I thought I would like having a sand-bed. It's messy and I hate it so I'm going to start siphoning it out with water changes and go bare bottom. I like the look of reef tanks with a lot of "flowing" corals in it so I'm probably going to be pretty BTA and LPS dominated with the possibility of some SPS in the future. Also looking at adding a six-line wrasse and maybe a dwarf angel of some sort as tank mates. Early August 2019: initial set up July 2020: start of tank journal

Hello fine folks of the internet. Here I am yet again with ANOTHER build. I rashly decided to sell my 78g and 65g and upgrade to something 120g and up. I ended up buying a 150g blah blah blah long story short, I messed up. Rushed things, ended up tankless. After my fish sat in rubbermaid totes for about 3 months, something happened. I did a large water change and overnight ALL my fish died. This was a nightmare, I was distraught. I did realize the next day that my large Clarkii clownfish Big Mama survived. After debating on selling her for a while I decided to get her a home. That brings us to where we are now. A 40 gallon breeder. As some of you may now my last 40B won TOTM last October. I loved that tank and everything about it. That's how I landed back into a 40B. Things will be a bit different this time. I am taking my sweet sweet time setting it up and buying equipment that will last. Equipment List: Lighting: 2x Ecotech Radion XR30W Pro Flow: Sicce Syncra 3.0 Return and Ecotech MP10 Heater: 200w Jaeger Controller: Neptune Apex EL Skimmer: Nyos Quantum Overflow: Eshopps Eclipse Sump: Acrylic Sump ATO: Tunze Osmolator Rock/Sand: Caribsea LifeRock and Aragonite Livestock Plans: Other than Big Mama and her carpet anemone. I plan on stocking this tank solely with Montipora. No softies, no lps. ONLY Montipora. As far as fish go, I want a blue spot jawfish, something to sift the sand, and a bunch of damsels that can stand up to big mama. Ill attach some pictures today. I still have a lot of the equipment to buy. I plan on having water in the tank within the next 4-6 weeks. Happy Reefing, thanks for looking..

I have 2 hydra 26 HD’s coming in the mail for my 40b which is 16 inches deep. I’m switching from a Chinese black box so these lights are completely new to me. What would good settings be for mostly lps, softies and a couple sps on the top? I found these settings on BRS tv but the uv seems high compared to what others suggest.

Upgrading my 20 gallon high to a 40 Breeder because the 20 started a slow leak. Never made a thread for the 20 gallon so I'll start with some background. My husband was looking in the free section of Craigslist on 11/28 and there it was: 20 gallons with live rock, t5 lighting, water, hydrometer (which I never used), heater, and HOB filtration. I decided that I would take the crushed coral substrate out and replace with live sand. The picture is right after the water cleared. I ended up changing the scape because the rocks were too close to the glass on the left. I added my first fish after the mini cycle caused by changing substrate. 2 Black Ocellaris Clowns; one much larger than the other. Sadly, the little guy didn't make it for long and I decided that I would have to QT any more fish. On 12/31, I brought home my first corals: A purple tipped frogspawn, an orange and purple Ricordea Florida, a small colony of Twizzlers zoas and some Radioactive Dragon Eyes. I added a green Rhodactis mushroom rock, Yellow/green candy cane, a red and orange acan lord, a Darth Mail polyp, an Eagle Eye polyp (freebie), and a few polyps of Radioactive Dragon Eyes (freebie) on January 20th. On 02/04, I picked up a green and blue acan lord and a pink and purple Ricordea Yuma. I also got a small Mocha Ocellaris and into the QT he went. As I said earlier, my 20 gallon started leaking on February 11th so I decided to upgrade to a 40 Breeder with a 10 gallon DIY refuge/sump. This is the beginning of my journey. Checking for leaks.

After years in the freshwater tank hobby my Girlfriend and I have decided to try our hands at a reef tank. I know going straight to a reef tank and basically skipping the "FOWLR" stage of saltwater isn't recommended but I have done tons of research into the hobby and I'm figuring if I combine that research with my years of freshwater experience We should be relatively successful. To give a little more info about us we have basically been hang arounds at our "LFS" for about 3 years and we've been interested in the saltwater hobby ever since. Unfortunately the hobby was way to expensive for us so we have been slowly preparing to have a reef tank for most of that time. Just recently our freshwater fish outgrew the 40 Breeder we had them in so we decided to upgrade to a 125. Luckily being a regular at our LFS has its perks and they gave us a killer deal on the 125 and all the stuff we had to buy for it. After staring at our empty 40 gallon for a few months and some convincing from the LFS we decided we had the perfect candidate to begin our journey into the saltwater world. I'm pretty new into the forum world as well so bear with me along this process but hopefully this doesn't turn out too terribly. If anyone has any recommendations for anything along this journey please feel free to share. Now the good stuff for everyone who has read this far, The Photo Dump: The 40 gallon in its beginning stages Tank after drilling (probably the most terrifying thing ever) Equipment wise I chose the Eshopps Eclipse M overflow because of its nice slim form factor as well as 2 basic 3/4" loc line returns for symmetry. I may eventually buy 2 random flow nozzles but I currently am not too sure if they're worth it especially on a tank this small. The basic black painted background (this is my first tank out of 6 or 7 to actually have a background) Next post with more than likely be the construction of my 20L sump thanks to Petco's $1 per gallon sale and this sweet baffle kit I found after some googling!

Hello everyone! For the last 6 months or so I have been battle a slow but persistent pest. I believe it is a red cyano algae. It grows on the predominantly on the sand bed bad has made its way to the rocks. It does seem to grow stronger/more dense around areas where the flow isnt as high. I have noticed increased growth around some frag plugs or around my bushy hammer coral. I have tried everything to get rid of it but cannot conquer it! I have tried tank blackouts, siphoning the algae out, and multiple treatments of chemi-clean (both the liquid and powder). I know that sometimes cyano can be caused by poor floor. I have two jebao Sw-4's running at 100%. I will try to get a picture of the algae later today. Like I said its not super aggressive but it keeps coming back and making my tank look junky. Other stats: dKh - 9.2 pH - 8.5 Nitrate - 0 Ammonia - 0 Phosphate - <= .3 Mg - 1000 Any thoughts or ideas to help me remove this problem altogether would be greatly appreciated.
