  1. In the last 4 years, my 20g tank has logged more than 2,000 miles in 5 different moves, has visited 8 different states, and two of those moves were half way across the country. Needless to say, this has taken quite a toll on the tank. It's been up and running in some state for some eight years now, and finally has a permanent home now that we've bought a house. With any luck, things will flourish, uninterrupted. SPS have been back in the tank a few months now and am hoping I won't have to sell them off and move again like I usually have to do! Equipment: Tank: Standard Petco $20 20g Tall - 24x12x16. Lighting: Radion XR30 Pro (G1) with upgraded wide-angle lenses @ 45% (Schedule: https://pastebin.com/c1PYMT4y) Flow: 1x MP10 and return pump @ 100% in Yellow Mode Sump: DIY 10g Standard Petco $10 10g - 20x10x12 with 2 chambers Skimmer: Bubble Magus C3.5, offline for months and my coral is loving the extra delicious organics ATO: Avast Marine with Aqualifter Temperature: Ranco 111000 Inkbird Controller connected to old titanium heater Overflow: HOB CPR CS50 with Aqualifter siphon and DIY float valve relay on return to prevent accidents Dosing: 1/4 - 1/3 gallon of 27.5% 42% saturated Kalk in RODI per day. It seems the only time I am working on my reef these days between work, climbing when it's warm and snowboarding when it's cold is when the weather is crappy and I'm stuck inside. Updated FTS 8/21/2020 Hey Everyone ! Newish to the hobby here , have set up a few pico tanks prior to this one , one 5 gallon and one 2.5 gallon . I figured now I would upgrade to the IM 20g peninsula 😍 Got a great deal on this used tank my LFS had just taken in off trade, came home cleaned it up made it look brand new! Now finally I’ve gotten around to setting up the tank after the holidays. What I have so far : IM 20g peninsula MightyJet 326 gph return pump Cobalt 75w Heater Current USA Orbit Dual pro IC LED bluetooth ( replaced with Ai prime 16hd 8/14/20 ) Current USA 660 wave pump Live rock Fiji pink substrate added so far update 8/22/20: 2 ocellaris clown fish ( Charlie & Clarissa) 1 six line wrasse ( Walter ) 3 small blue hermit crabs tiger conch ( Connie ) 1 nassarius snail 3 bumblebee snails yellow colony polyp Duncan toadstool leathers RFA GSP pink waving hand anthelia pipe organ Now to wait for the tank to cycle .. trying to cycle naturally with the live rock. Any suggestions on if this is the best way? If not what are best products to use to speed up the process ? Also wanted suggestions/ feedback on what everyone thought about the rock work ?
  3. Journal Goals: Starting this journal now in the hopes of garnering advice/opinions prior to even setting up. Really want to do this in-depth for record keeping and hopefully help out other newbies! Tank/Equipment: -Red Sea Max Nano w/stand and all included equipment (skimmer, ATO, Sock, Carbon, Pump) -Helio dual 100w heaters (went with the dual for redundancy should one fail) -1 EcoTech MP10 (pricey I know but looking ahead equipment wise honesty and believe in cry over price over cry over failure) -CaribSea Arag-Alive Sand -CaribSea Life Rock -Red Sea Coral Pro Salt -Various Red Sea Test Kits Tank Overarching Goals: The overall goal for this tank is to become an LPS and Softy tank. Really want to establish a nice little Lords garden w/a small Zoa island. Also plan to have an Elegance once the tank is established. This will be my first reef tank so I really look at this as an opportunity to learn. Mistakes will be made and I truly hope this community of experienced reefers will call me out on bad decisions as I go! Specific Stocking Goals: Fish: Once Cycled; 2x Ocellaris Clownfish After 2 week steady parameters; 1x Six-Line Wrasse 1x Small sand sifting goby Inverts: 1x Peppermint or Fire Shrimp 1 or 2 Nasarius Snails Coral: Once fish and tank are established (gauging a month or so but will base on overall parameters); Various Lords Zoas on island Elegance Tentacled Toadstool Duncan Candy coral Maybe red Xenia (will decide this at later date due to their rapid growth status) Feel free to offer other suggestions! Cycle Plan: Once aquascaped and sand/water (using Red Sea salt) added I plan to follow the Dr. Tim’s fishless cycle. Dosing ammonia and then the One and Only. Test kits will all be in, and tank will be tested regularly until initial cycle completed. Once this is done the initial fish will be introduced gradually. I also plan to dose Brightwell Clean during this period to try and prevent/combat any algae blooms that may arise (though I understand this isn’t a guaranteed way to avoid them. I am prepared for any that may come. Mainly trying this based on BRS advice). After the tank has had time to settle in I will turn the lights on, look to start adding coral after a few weeks! Additional: Tank arrives next week. Starting the journal now to garner advice before I even begin the initial set-up process. Start looking for pics of the initial aquascape soon! Please feel free to ask questions, inquire about equipment/products I might be missing etc. I’ve lurked this forum for quite a while now and am really happy to finally be joining this community and look forward to talking with you all! 10/12/2021-Initial Setup

    20g Long Setup

I am currently trying to setup a 20G long reef tank. I want to have the tank FULL of lps such as torches, hammers, and frogspawn but I can't go without an anemone. I've had my 10g for about 2 and a half years and want something better. I am mainly contemplating between an AI Prime HD or a pair of Kessil A80 for lighting. Also, what would you recommend for a filter? It will be sitting on a breakfast bar as the center of attention. I wouldn't mind a small canister as long as it isn't really loud. I don't want to skimp but I don't want to be unreasonable. I also don't know where to start for a power head. Seems like everything is overpowered for a 20g. What other equipment/hardware would you recommend? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  7. Hello, I'm looking to get my first tank in the hobby and I really like the look of the 20g Peninsula innovative marine fusion pro. I was wondering wether you would recommend this as a good tank for a beginner in the marine hobby? Also I live in the UK, so where can I best buy this aquarium and other equipment/fish to be delivered to me in the UK for good value? My stocking will consist mainly of soft corals with good movement and inverts. Also maybe a clam. Fish: 2 clownfish 1 six line wrasse 1 jawfish 1 clown goby (Is this a good combination? I really like all these fish!) I intend on adding an ATO system and Protein Skimmer to reduce maintenance. Any tips are much appreciated!
  8. Hello nano-reef community. I want to share with you my IM peninsula 20 that was set up in July 2018 when I moved to the northeast. Amazed by the IM aluminum stand that seemed to me like a genius design, I bought this tank when it first came out in 2017. I would say that it is a nice quality tank with high clarity glass, but the AIO design comes at the expense of not being able to have a sump. It is also difficult to aquascape a narrow tank such as this. Since the setup, I had battled against all the common issues a reef newbie could imagine. To my own surprises, I persisted through these challenges. I'm happy to emerge from the aiptasia takeover (thanks to two peppermint shrimps), dinoflagellate bloom(thanks to the IM UV light), hair algae disaster (thanks to countless times of manual removal), crazy alk swings (thanks to malfunctioning smart plug that isn't so "smart" after all). Now the tank is in a stable stage and all corals are growing at a desirable rate. I call it a shabby reef tank because as you can see, I don't have any showpiece corals. I don't have any single frag over $50. When I visit a LPS, I would marvel at the bounce mushrooms and the crazy looking scoly and zoas, but I know I couldn't convince myself to buy something so expensive only to watch it die in a few weeks. So I walk away with the $20 dollar frag which takes forever to grow into a decent colony. But at this stage in my life, I'm content with my choices. One day though, I will build a massive SPS tank equipped with all the bells and whistles. I used to be shy about sharing my tank on IG because I felt like I had nothing to show for. @Cannedfish actually inspired and encouraged me to start an instgram account and just document my tank with my camera. So here are some shots of my little reef. Full tank shot (September 2020) - Tank residents - Bili the tail spot blenny Mimi the melanurus wrasse The couple. Some shots of my corals - the little SPS corner Full tank shot (December 2020) - happy to report that the tank has been doing very well for the past two months. I re-scaped it to allow for better flow and less detritus build-up and I have enjoyed the new scape. I did have to remove the container full of sand which was originally set up to be the sleeping cave for the melanurus wrasse (mimi) but it seems like she's fine with or without the sand bed. She does cruise around the bottom of the tank at night tank to look for a comfortable and secure hiding place which is both funny and a little disheartening to watch.
  9. I've finally got my 10g saltwater tank set up and I plan on getting a pair of clownfish and I've seen conflicting statements on if other fish are possible Also if anyone sees this what inverts yall would recomend I'm very excited about starting saltwater

    Are my fish OK?

Hi there, 3 days ago I bought a small tank bred Clown and a small six line wrasse and added them to my two week old tank (after cycling) which already featured a healthy yellow Coralgoby (who only eats frozen food(note: i haven't tried pellets)). So far i have only managed to feed the clown flake food which he will eat happily along with frozen foods, however he constantly swims from one side of the tank to the other really fast, whilst bumping into the each side of the glass and does this whilst swimming next to the front glass panel of the tank and occasionally stops at each corner swimming up and down slowly. My question is, is the clownfish healthy or stressed and is there something i should do? note : he is the only clownfish in the tank and is very small. Also my small six line wrasse that i got has been hiding in a cave in the rock and rarely comes out. When he does come out, he swims close to the sand bed and its usually first thing in the morning before the light comes on but the natural light coming through the windows is present. When he is in the cave he doesn't move much but still moves his fins, and occasionally pecks at the glass next to him. Also during my first day of having him i couldn't find him in the tank, and it turned out he was stuck in the gap between the HOB filter and the glass, i moved the filter and at first i thought he was dead but he slowly swam into the cave which is at the other side of the tank. I haven't managed to feed him yet as he swims away from the coral feeder with frozen food in it. My parameters are stable and i have nitrates at 2 ppm with ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm. My second question is, is the six line wrasse OK and if not what should i do about it? note: when I bought the two fish from the LFS, they were both swimming around, looking healthy, but the wrasse did occasionally hide in the rock. Also when i looked at the wrasse in the bag (during acclimation) he had a white floating bit attached to the fins on the top of his body, but it has now gone. To give you an idea about the tank and the cave, the tank is 20 gallons and the cave is just rock leaning against the back corner of the tank so i can see inside and so know what the wrasse is doing whilst in there. Thanks, John.

To add or not to add...

Another small fish, that is my question 😁 I'm quite aware this question has been asked a thousand times, and I read through quite a few of these threads. However, I'd like to be sure about my individual aquarium, before going out and buying a gorgeous fish, that I should not have bought 😁 My 20g Waterbox is currently stocked with a pair of clowns, a Tailspot Blenny (which I adore really), a cleaner shrimp and of course an assorted CUC. The first couple of months I had some trouble with stabilizing the water conditions, however at the moment I notice more steady water conditions and after 6 months there is coralline algae developing pretty much all over the aquarium. Am I correct in assuming the tank is starting to stabilize and age? (I am seeing some pineapple sponges and other filter feeders as well) Now the clowns and blenny are active, but docile and don't bother each other, nor the shrimp. The cleaner shrimp is having a ball following every bit of movement from under his rock overhang. Because I enjoy watching the livestock and their daily business so much (more then I expected actually) I am wondering if it would be possible to add another small, peacefull fish. And if so, what kind of fish? I was thinking of either a Firefish (perhaps a purple one) or a Neon Blue Goby or another type of goby? What do you guys think, would it be wise to squeeze in another fish, or would it be too cramped up in a 20g? If you guys would advice against it, you're going to cost me, because I might start considering a bigger tank 😇
  13. Hi folks, I'm at the very beginning stages of setting up my 20g peninsula tank from IM. A problem I'm running into is finding a quality light source that is also aesthetically pleasing. A mentor told me not to skimp on lighting, and after reading some of the topics here it makes sense to spend the couple extra bucks on something that will last and also be able to go into an upgraded tank if/when that time comes. So he swears by the radion xr30, which wouldnt be a problem, but the mounting arm would take up chamber 2, where I'll have a skimmer. This seems to be my issue with the peninsula and a mounting arm (aesthetics). Any advice? How have you solved this problem? I'd like to avoid a hanging fixture if possible. Maybe something like the attached? Thanks!

    DeeCoy's 20g beginner

Hello everyone! This is my first attempt at saltwater reefing. I have spent the last couple of years dabbling with freshwater and brackish setups, and decided I was finally ready to try the salty side. I am starting with a used IM Nuvo 20 gallon, Small Solar Flare LED, wet live rock and wet live sand. I am live cycling with damsels, snails, and a couple of hermits. Wet date 1/19/19. Impatience is my problem...I am chomping at the bit to add more life to the framework, but I know it is stupid to rush things into an uncycled tank. So, sitting on my hands and wallet at the moment, testing water params every 3 days and haunting LFSs looking at frags and tanks. Dee

  17. Hey, So now that I have saturated myself with many hours of countless reading, I am ready build and manage a tank. I decided to go with this route because of equipment I already had. 10 gallon all in one setup. A very good starter read is here by steelhealr http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...;hl=submersible the inspiration for this build and help came from lil'wrasse cool http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?...126726&st=0 I went into greater detail than most of you will need but these are questions I had when I was starting so... bear with it. Now for the pics, This is for a standard 10 gallon fish tank. The silocone will fill in the gaps so hair pin precision is not needed here. the bulkhead how it looks That is where I am for now. I will post more with fuge and siliconed. bzphotog

    Kelz 20g Hex

After a few years out of the hobby i have finally taken the plunge back into the world of saltwater tanks. My husband found this cute 20 gallon hex and bought it with plans for a freshwater tank. I offhandedly mentioned that it would make a beautiful little reef and here we are. This will be a slower build but hopefully it will be a beautiful one. Sand is rinsed. It's amazing how dirty dry sand can be. The container I mixed water in wasn't big enough so I had to make more. And finally the tank all filled. Now we wait.

    Yet Another IM20 Build!

Hello All. Long time lurker...first time poster. I have kept saltwater tanks for a very long time. I mainly kept FOWLR in the past. This is my second nano build. The first was almost ten years ago. Needless to say...I am back in the game! I was able to pick up an Innovative Marine 20G Nuvo tank from one of my LFS (The Hidden Reef / Outside of Philly). They had a sale on tanks. I picked mine up with the 2 stock 18w lights for $279...much cheaper than the $399 retail price that I saw online. After I set up the tank and mounted the lights, one of the clamps snapped. Thank God that I had the cover over the tank...the light would have just plopped in. I emailed IM and Brian got back to me ASAP. After sending a few pics, they mailed out a new clamp. Great customer service! Here are my plans. Equipment: Tank - IM NUVO 20 Pump - Might keep the stock...I have noticed that a lot of people replace them. Flow - 1 Jebao SW 4 - picked it up from another LFS / ARS in Malvern...Mike is great and I picked it up for cheap...$20 cheaper than another LFS...and Mike appears to keep some of the best frags locally. Heater - 50W from old system Lights - 2 stock Skkye Lights 18W - will keep for now and consider upgrading around the Holiday. (Kessel or Prime HD LD) ATO - I am researching ATOs at the moment Skimmer - I am researching skimmers at the moment Filtration - Socks and chemi-pure blue Refugium - looking at using one of the chambers for a refugium Life: 12ish pounds of dry rock / 15lbs of sand Fish (I am thinking about 3 max) Orange Spotted Goby or Yellow Watchman Goby or Rainford's Goby (leaning towards the Rainford's) 6 Line Wrasse Tail Spot Blenny - picked him/her up after the cycle Midnight or Wyoming White...just don't know yet....maybe a Domino Corals (still determining what I want) Lords Leptoseris Chalice Scolymia Favia Frogspawn Leather Leptastrea Candy Canes COC Snails, hermits, mini brittle stars (as necessary) Maintenance: Weekly 10%-20% water change Dosing (maybe) I started the cycling process 2 weeks ago (shrimp and bacteria). Ammonia and Nitrites have spiked...picking up Nitrates...taking it very slowly... A few picks:
  20. Hey everyone, I've been looking into this off and on for a while since I built this tank, but I can't seem to come to a head on which lighting would be best for me. I did skim through the led lighting section for similar tanks and looked at product details but they did not really tell me anything I needed to make a definitive decision.(they actually made me have more questions than solve) I have a 24" x 14" x 15" ~22g tank I built when I upgraded from a 10g a few months ago. without the back sump, the tank is 24" x 14" x 12" I think these dimensions are very similar to a IM nuvo 20g if im not wrong. My current lighting is two 20" finnex stingrays set to 9 hrs per day, I dont know if this lighting is really considered sufficient since at least in the FW side, it is considered a low-medium light with a par of around 30 I believe(par at the bottom of tank 14"). Well I thought I could find a light by looking at what people are using on their nuvo 20g tanks, and there seems to be a few options From what I've seen the options are; kessil a160 tuna blue 2 kessil a80 tuna blue AI Prime 24-36" current orbit marine My corals I currently keep are an acan, blasto, xenia, GSP, ricordia, and few zoanthids. afaik this is considered a mixed reef, I plan to shoot for a possible birds nest seriatoporia coral in the highest part of my tank, and/or possibly some sort of frogspawn/hammer. I would like to keep my options open so if possible I can use low-high lighting. another bit to add to this, but I notice at least with SW lighting, theres not really much attention given to red LED specifically 660nm part of the spectrum, is there any reason for this? In FW there is usually red added to the LED array for the second usable section of light by plants(440nm being the first and 660nm being the second) I dont quite understand the imbalance, do corals not use this? anyways, Any recommendations, experiences, or advice will be extremely helpful as Im still wrapping my head on this after quite a long time at looking at it. here is a pic of my tank for reference, and again thanks for anyone who can help or reply.
  21. Hey nano-reef, After a recent post asking about a recommended light to use, it seems the nanobox duo plus m is the best option for me. I wanted to upgrade my lights, but im held back from getting a new nanobox duo/duo plus m due to budget. I figured its not very justified to buy a new ai prime hd or tide if what my aquarium really would be set is with a duo coverage wise. but on that note, I am also interested in a used tide/tide plus m. I am hoping someone has one they are not using and willing to sell to me. Please PM if interested with offer, and thank you for reading the post. UPDATE: thank you those who sent PMs, I have bought a duo plus m.
