We kept a 55 freshwater in college with Balas, Angelfish, Cories, Danios, and the like, but I wanted to start something myself. With the help of a friend in Seattle who has kept a 40 gallon since college, I set out to try my hand at it. I am currently on Day 3 of the initial cycle. With the dry rock inside I ended up putting a little under 12 gallons in the tank. With the my refractometer reading right at 1.025, 100W heater at 78, and water pump getting good circular flow in the tank, I put in my biomatter and now begin the wait to test ammonia levels. I plan on taking things really slow beginning with a cleanup crew and perhaps a single fish. I also plan on buying some small soft or LPS corals at the LFS that are in the $5-10 range. Rushing can be expensive and I'm in this to go slow, learn, and enjoy. Enjoying reading the community posts. I'll keep things updated on progress. Thanks, Wiggles.
Please help... New to Salt water... Not sure if I made the right decision or not.. so asking for your opinion.... Please be nice... 16 biocube? Not sure how old or what brand... What do y'all think? Paid $50 ??? Good or bad? No leaks.. working lights.. ect..
As I slowly shut down my tank and transfer my stock to a friend's 7 gallon, I'm looking forward to settling down again in California and use lessons learned to start my new tank. But problem statement! My job will keep me on the road for up to three weeks at a time this summer - while the temperatures at home will get near 100. I plan on keeping my BioCube to cut down on evaporation...but what can I actually stock a tank with? Good news in August I will be home full time. I really will only be gone twice for three weeks. Thoughts?
Hello, just wanted to post my first tank build. I was planning on a handful of cleaners after the tank cycles, slowly adding a few beginner corals. I think mushrooms and zoas? Not sure. 3 fish, a pair of clowns and maybe a goby. Just taking it slow, learning about the corals and fish before I actually select anything. Not really sure which direction i can go for easy care and hardy tank. Any helpful advice or tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking. I started the tank on Saturday, 12AUG, fish-less cycle using ammonium chloride solution. The ammonia levels have been steady at 2ppm, with a slight rise in Nitrite to .05ppm and Nitrate to 3ppm in just over 24hrs. I used red sea salt to mix to a SG of 1.025, and using the red sea test kits to test all parameters. LED Biocube 16 w/ stock lighting. Tunze Silence Pump 1073.008, Return pump. Turbelle Nanostream 6040 w/controller. inTank Media Basket, in 2nd chamber, w/ poly filter floss, (Purigen, Chemi-Pure Elite to be added after cycle) Tunze Osmolator Nano 3152 ATO. Approximately 14lbs of CaribSea Life Rock, and 15lbs of CaribSea live sand.
