    Fluval Evo 13.5 Owners Thread

I do not know if there is a definitive thread for all Fluval Evo 13.5 owners but if there is not, I am starting this one! The thread will ultimately serve as a learning resource for any and all reefers who own this particular AIO. Feel free to post any photographs, advice, do's, and most importantly do not's of your tanks. I look forward to making this a friendly and helpful resource for all Fluval Evo 13.5 owners. If there already are threads trying to accomplish this, please link this thread to them so that it can be consolidated to avoid redundancy. Redundancy is so annoying. I really hope you guys run with this!!
  2. Hi Nano-reefers, I'd like to start a journal on this build because I've gotten tons of help through these forums with great advice and perspectives, and I'm hoping that I can offer the same platform and share a bit of my journey into reefing. Traditionally, I would start these journals, stay active for a few weeks then forget about it. I'm hoping that I can keep up with the updates/entries. Does anyone have any tips/hints to keep these journal entries interesting? I guess I'll start by introducing myself! My name is Danny, and I'm 27 years old. I live on the east side of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada! I've got about seven years of freshwater experience and two months of saltwater experience. MY TANK Over the first two months, I've been tediously searching for second-hand items to start my saltwater nano reef. I have the Fluval Evo 13.5 Aquarium, and it comes with the stock light and pump. I bought dry rock and threw in some frozen shrimp as an ammonia source. I used some leftover egg crates to build a makeshift chamber media basket. I used this Polydoh Moldable Plastic to create a mini lid for the feeding hole that I'm very proud of creating. I mixed my saltwater using Red Sea Coral Pro Salt Mix for Aquarium 55-Gallon Bucket and RODI water using Aquatic Life RO Buddie Four Stage. I aimed for 1.025 salinity but got 1.024. I believe this was caused by not heating my RODI water first. I ordered a MLW-10 Jebao from Alibaba because I wanted something with a thin profile, and I've ordered lights from 21LEDUSA with the guidance of other fellow Nano-Reef members. Two Actinic Blue 1ft bars. Built the stand using 2x4s and compressed wood board. I painted it using white spray paint. JOURNEY I then realized that I was currently experiencing what people called the "ugly" phase. Dark brown diatoms started to cover the dry rock, and the water was still cloudy. Was I in trouble? Should I start scrubbing and perform a water change? I left it. I followed the guidance from aquarist veterans and just left it. I tested the parameters and found that even three months after I started the cycle, my ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates had high values (NH3: 8.0ppm, NO2: 2.0ppm, NO3: 5.0ppm). I took out the rotting shrimp and allowed my cycle to continue. One week later... I found a local reefer through Canreef, and he invited me to his garage display room. We had a great conversation, and I left with a few easy beginner corals to introduce to my aquarium. I'll list them at the end of this post. Introduction of coral in the aquarium I used a 30-minute drip acclimation method that I've done with my freshwater fish, and this seemed to do the trick. So far, the corals look happy and are opening up nicely. The wavemaker is move the water quite well at 500 gallons/hr. Things I'm working on What to feed the corals What is too much light? What is the ideal light period? Is morning moonlight a thing? How badly will the pulsing xenia or GSP grow over my rock Coral List Pulsing Xenia Toadstool Leather coral Purple Green Euphyllia Hammer Green Star Polyps Green Trumpet coral Aussie Duncan Coral Kenya Tree Coral Leaf Plate Montipora Single polyp Green mushroom rhodactics Green Euphyllia frogspawn Slipper coral - Herpolitha Palythoa Green neon montipora
  3. Background: This is an upgrade from my Fluval Spec V. I have always struggled with the rock being too big in the Fluval Spec V. It makes it very hard to clean the glass on each side so lots of algae build up. I also wanted to get a bigger tnak for the clown fish. This clown fish has been with me for over 2 years now and survived through 2 leaks, 1 move, and other mishaps. It is also a total bully so I can't put it into my Red Sea Reefer 350. When I first saw ReefBuilder feature the Fluval Evo 12, I knew it will be my next tank. The dimension fits perfectly wherethe Spec V is now and the rock will look great with more space on each side. There are some questionable design choices with the tank such as the black honeycomb at the top of the tank (which I razored off) and the AIO chamber allows a lot of detritus to build up in the first and second chamber. The stock lighting and pump are good only for softies and low light LPS. But overall, the tank itself is pretty decent for the price. I do like it comes with surface skimmer and the return nozzle is already split into two. In additional, the raised design is very modern. My vision for this tank is a very natural tank with gorgonians, LPS, zoas, acans, and ricordeas. I will get another fish or two, something that can put up with the clown.
  4. So I was very happy with my @World Wide Corals live sale purchases I decided to join the coral club over the weekend. This was my Father’s Day gift from my dog😝. My first package arrived today😁😁. I have the corals acclimating and can’t wait to get them in the tank hehehehehehe.
  5. In 2013 I had just put my current house under contract, and knew I had no logical space for a 50g reef tank. I broke it all down, and only brought with me a 20g long low-tech planted tank. For 7 years I kept telling myself there was no space. Then, just browsing LetGo, I saw this dirty, ugly, hair algae overgrown Fluval Evo 13.5. This was Jan 9th 2020. On Jan 11th, the tank was in my living room. With 12lbs new Caribsea Real Life Rock, new live sand, and a very good cleaning, it looked brand new. I'll try to get a pic of it before purchasing. I re-homed the chocolate chip starfish and two firefish as well. I was left with two Wyoming Snowflake Clowns and Royal Gramma. Using the advice here, I kept the inherited HOB and rear chamber sponge filters going for a few weeks to reduce the chance of a new cycle, considering all new rock and sand were added. Pardon the pics, I am still trying to figure out the "Pro" mode on my Galaxy Note 10+ 2020.01.10 FTS: 20200112_094159 by Mike Fielder, on Flickr Display: 13.5g Fluval Evo Lighting: Nano Box Reef Mini Tide Plus Filtration: Poly, ChemiPure Elite, Purigen. InTank Chamber 1 basket. Heater: 50W Fluval Circulation: Tunze 1073.008, Aqamai KPS ATO: AutoAqua Smart ATO Micro on the way! Controller: Not yet! Skimmer: Considering IceCap K1? Dosing: Vibrant 1x/wk, MicroBacter7 1x/2wks
  6. Hello, I’m looking at starting to stock my Fluval Evo 13.5 with corals. Will the standard light support LPS? Does anyone have any pictures of their stock light Evo with LPS and softies? Im new to marine tanks so any help will be great.. Thank you
  7. Hi! So - back in 2015 I had a 45g tank but being in high school it ended up being way too much for me and I broke it down before I left for college. Fast forward to a few weeks ago - I somehow end up back on this forum and before I know it I have a new Evo at my door, Amazon Prime is a blessing and a curse. As I learned with my last go at this - I suck at tank maintenance AND keeping a journal, hopefully gonna stick with posting this time and in turn it will keep me from slackin on my tank, we'll see 😛 So here goes 🙂 6/26/19 - Day 0! - Cloudy! - Dosed Dr. Tims One & Only and ammonium chloride to 3ppm. 6/29/19 - Day 3 - Water finally starting to clear up. - Ammonia reading 1.5ppm
  8. Got a few pics of my tank running the hydra26 and also glued my new WWC frags on the rocks.
  9. So they finally stocked some more yellow banded possum wrasse on Liveaquaria and I went ahead and decided this should be the next fish for me. He/she hopefully will arrive this Friday so now I’m anxiously waiting. His tank mate will be my citrinis clown goby who also came from Liveaquaria last year. I have a Pom Pom crab in the tank so I’m not sure how that will work out but from what I’ve read, the wrasse should leave it alone. I really hope this fish does well in my tank and gets along with my goby.
  10. Anyone have suggestions on hydra 26 settings over a fluval evo 13.5
  11. So I have had my evo since they first came out back in the middle of 2016 and recently I noticed some of my lights went out. Contacted fluval and they sent me a new light under warranty. It appears to be slightly different and the led’s seem to be better protected...... problem was that the freaking new light wouldn’t even turn on 😒. Fluval is sending me another one that should arrive today so hopefully that one actually works. But wanted to share some pics of the new light. The old one is on the right, new one on the left. Also the connectors are better and have a tighter fit

    fluval evo 12

FTS of my evo. Trying to make it look decent again
  13. Today I went to the opening of a new fish store and saw some bumble bee snails that looked cool. I picked up 2 of them plus a few frags for my evo 12. After looking them up when I got home I’m wondering if I made a mistake. Anyone have experience with these guys? I have 3 astraea snails and one Halloween hermit plus 1 citrinis clown goby in my tank and a few corals. Used to have a couple of more fish but an ich outbreak got them 😢
  14. I have been seeing these fibers floating everywhere in my tank. I did a 15% water change to try and reduce them but it does not seem to have helped. Anyone know what they could be? I was thinking maybe I had some vermetid snails but don’t see any. This is something that just started about 2 weeks ago. I did finally replace my sponge in the evo with intank media basket for chamber 2 and put filter floss to hopefully help

    The Snazxy Reef

About Me and This Tank (TLDR at bottom) So a few years ago (about 4) my family and I were getting cichlids for my little brother's bow-front from this little shop that our uncle recommended. Keep note that the closest thing Ive ever seen close to a reef tank was a shark-filled-false-coral tank at Seaworld. As soon as I stepped into those doors I was greeted by a 32 gal Biocube. As fast as a blink of an eye I was hooked, not just by the clownfish playing around in a foot long circumference of a bubbletip anemone, but as to what I noticed as those alien like creatures that I have roughly known as coral from the books in the elementary library (I was a big reader). I was mesmerized by the beauty of a 30 gallon box of water to the point where my parents had to pull me away from the dang thing. Naturally I was pissed and refused to leave the thing. But my parents told me to check something out. I round the corner see a room full of frag tanks, my jaw dropped. That day was the day that I owned my first reef tank. We got a Fluval Spec 5 gal, some live rock, live sand, a small strip light, a clown goby, a firefish, a 6 lined wrasse, and some zoanthids as well as a paly. I had that tank for about three years until we moved and things went down from there, I had my first algae bloom and the tank went out with a boom, everything dead except for a GBG as well as my blue coral banded shrimp (that I still have today lol). I was devastated. Even though I didnt know what I was doing I knew I was on fire, I mean, I had some pretty cool corals as well as a dragonface puffer (that somehow lived about 6 months but sadly died to my firefish -big meany) and on top of that I never did a single waterchange! After that I had nothing but an algae filled tank for about a year. That brings me to where I am now! Last year for my birthday my parents got me a Fluval Evo 13. BIG learning curve. I had constant algae blooms and the seams even busted. But luckily that gave mw a clean slate-- the best of the slates! I started doing hardcore researching on reefing, and I mean hardcore, as In staying up til 3 AM on school nights (still a strait-A student!) watching videos and browsing forms, until I had a rough Idea of how to properly care for the delicate, money draining art forms we call reef tanks. As of today I have my Fluval evo 13.5 that only houses about five corals, sad I know but its hard when the closest LFS from where I live as 45 minutes away (an hour if you count Austin traffic). I have also recently bought an AI Prime HD that I got with lawn mowing money😄! Im still learning but since i've been doing water changes algae is at a minimum, only a few spots. Tommoro I will try to add pictures but thanks if you've made it this far through my story. I look forward to adding pics soon! TLDR; I have been reefing since a young age and I have a Fluval evo 13.5, but srsly this doesn't do my story any justice just read the above lol
  16. Anyone know what this could be? It looks like some kind of shrimp and I see 4 of them in my tank. They are super small and I first noticed them months ago when I would turn off all my pumps and they would just be floating on the surface until I poked at them. I do have a cleaner shrimp in my tank but I’m not sure if these could be the babies or something else. Hope it’s not a bunch of mantis shrimp.
  17. Was able to get a decent shot of this tiny creature on my glass using a magnifying glass. Anyone seen one of those or know what it is? Looks like it has a bunch of legs
  18. Was it a bad idea that I added a Halloween hermit to my evo 13.5 tank? He is the only crab in the tank. I have a small few snails, 1 cleaner shrimp, and 1 citrinis clown goby plus some soft corals. I did put some empty shells in the tank. Here is a picture of the guy and an older picture of my tank layout.

    Fish for my Evo 12

I was wondering if a Royal Gramma Basslet would be okay in the Evo 12? The only other fish I currently have is a shark nose goby and I plan on purchasing a court jester goby. I’m really looking for an a more active fish other then a clown or firefish.
  20. I want to put a fuge on my 13.5 evo. I am not sure the glass can stand the weight of the hog about 2 gallon capacity. Any suggestion or thoughts

    WTB Fluval Evo 13.5 Light

Does anybody who upgraded their lighting for their fluval evo 13.5 want to sell their stock lighting fixture that came with the tank? Quote me price and shipping!
  22. About 6 months ago I joined this forum and started a IM Lagoon 25 as my first ever fish tank and posted an aquarium journal but never really got into the habit of updating the post. With that said, I ended up moving into a smaller apartment a couple weeks ago and I chose to downsize my tank and sell off some of my livestock, corals, and equipment because I may be moving again next year. I plan on being much more active in posting updates as well as on the forum in general. So without further ado... here's my new Fluval Evo 13.5: Equipment: Livestock: Pictures: Thanks for looking!
  23. Hi all, here is a link to my evo 12 with livestock. Hope it looks good and I can’t wait to get more corals in it. Sorry for the terrible editing, I had to do it on my phone since my computer is messed up.
  24. Here is a video I made unboxing the fluval evo 12 if anyone is interested. I made the video over a year ago when they first came out then I just left it in its box and barely started it up in September. I will be posting another video soon of me setting up the tank once I get my computer fixed. Hope everyone likes it ☺️
  25. I want to upgrade the stock pump on my fluval evo 13.5, but I would like to hear some pros and cons of the different options from actual owners. I recently purchased an Eheim Compact 1000 pump for this tank but I ended putting the stock pump back on due to high temps. My tank was reaching 87+ degrees F with the eheim whereas with the stock pump, i'm steady 80 degrees F. Eheim compact 1000: Pros: -smaller size than stock -260 GPH -no filter to clean Cons: -loud -5/8" non-barbed outlet (requires zip tie; fluval pump is 1/2" outlet) -heatsoaks the tank Some other names I hear about for this tank are Sicce 1.0 or 1.5, MJ1200, and Hydor 300. Do any of these options produce significant amounts of heat in the Evo 13.5? Not too concerned about the noise, but quiet is preferable.
