    Fluval Evo 13.5 Owners Thread

I do not know if there is a definitive thread for all Fluval Evo 13.5 owners but if there is not, I am starting this one! The thread will ultimately serve as a learning resource for any and all reefers who own this particular AIO. Feel free to post any photographs, advice, do's, and most importantly do not's of your tanks. I look forward to making this a friendly and helpful resource for all Fluval Evo 13.5 owners. If there already are threads trying to accomplish this, please link this thread to them so that it can be consolidated to avoid redundancy. Redundancy is so annoying. I really hope you guys run with this!!
  2. Background: This is an upgrade from my Fluval Spec V. I have always struggled with the rock being too big in the Fluval Spec V. It makes it very hard to clean the glass on each side so lots of algae build up. I also wanted to get a bigger tnak for the clown fish. This clown fish has been with me for over 2 years now and survived through 2 leaks, 1 move, and other mishaps. It is also a total bully so I can't put it into my Red Sea Reefer 350. When I first saw ReefBuilder feature the Fluval Evo 12, I knew it will be my next tank. The dimension fits perfectly wherethe Spec V is now and the rock will look great with more space on each side. There are some questionable design choices with the tank such as the black honeycomb at the top of the tank (which I razored off) and the AIO chamber allows a lot of detritus to build up in the first and second chamber. The stock lighting and pump are good only for softies and low light LPS. But overall, the tank itself is pretty decent for the price. I do like it comes with surface skimmer and the return nozzle is already split into two. In additional, the raised design is very modern. My vision for this tank is a very natural tank with gorgonians, LPS, zoas, acans, and ricordeas. I will get another fish or two, something that can put up with the clown.

    The Snazxy Reef

About Me and This Tank (TLDR at bottom) So a few years ago (about 4) my family and I were getting cichlids for my little brother's bow-front from this little shop that our uncle recommended. Keep note that the closest thing Ive ever seen close to a reef tank was a shark-filled-false-coral tank at Seaworld. As soon as I stepped into those doors I was greeted by a 32 gal Biocube. As fast as a blink of an eye I was hooked, not just by the clownfish playing around in a foot long circumference of a bubbletip anemone, but as to what I noticed as those alien like creatures that I have roughly known as coral from the books in the elementary library (I was a big reader). I was mesmerized by the beauty of a 30 gallon box of water to the point where my parents had to pull me away from the dang thing. Naturally I was pissed and refused to leave the thing. But my parents told me to check something out. I round the corner see a room full of frag tanks, my jaw dropped. That day was the day that I owned my first reef tank. We got a Fluval Spec 5 gal, some live rock, live sand, a small strip light, a clown goby, a firefish, a 6 lined wrasse, and some zoanthids as well as a paly. I had that tank for about three years until we moved and things went down from there, I had my first algae bloom and the tank went out with a boom, everything dead except for a GBG as well as my blue coral banded shrimp (that I still have today lol). I was devastated. Even though I didnt know what I was doing I knew I was on fire, I mean, I had some pretty cool corals as well as a dragonface puffer (that somehow lived about 6 months but sadly died to my firefish -big meany) and on top of that I never did a single waterchange! After that I had nothing but an algae filled tank for about a year. That brings me to where I am now! Last year for my birthday my parents got me a Fluval Evo 13. BIG learning curve. I had constant algae blooms and the seams even busted. But luckily that gave mw a clean slate-- the best of the slates! I started doing hardcore researching on reefing, and I mean hardcore, as In staying up til 3 AM on school nights (still a strait-A student!) watching videos and browsing forms, until I had a rough Idea of how to properly care for the delicate, money draining art forms we call reef tanks. As of today I have my Fluval evo 13.5 that only houses about five corals, sad I know but its hard when the closest LFS from where I live as 45 minutes away (an hour if you count Austin traffic). I have also recently bought an AI Prime HD that I got with lawn mowing money😄! Im still learning but since i've been doing water changes algae is at a minimum, only a few spots. Tommoro I will try to add pictures but thanks if you've made it this far through my story. I look forward to adding pics soon! TLDR; I have been reefing since a young age and I have a Fluval evo 13.5, but srsly this doesn't do my story any justice just read the above lol
  4. Anyone know what this could be? It looks like some kind of shrimp and I see 4 of them in my tank. They are super small and I first noticed them months ago when I would turn off all my pumps and they would just be floating on the surface until I poked at them. I do have a cleaner shrimp in my tank but I’m not sure if these could be the babies or something else. Hope it’s not a bunch of mantis shrimp.
  5. Was able to get a decent shot of this tiny creature on my glass using a magnifying glass. Anyone seen one of those or know what it is? Looks like it has a bunch of legs
  6. Was it a bad idea that I added a Halloween hermit to my evo 13.5 tank? He is the only crab in the tank. I have a small few snails, 1 cleaner shrimp, and 1 citrinis clown goby plus some soft corals. I did put some empty shells in the tank. Here is a picture of the guy and an older picture of my tank layout.
  7. So I have had my evo since they first came out back in the middle of 2016 and recently I noticed some of my lights went out. Contacted fluval and they sent me a new light under warranty. It appears to be slightly different and the led’s seem to be better protected...... problem was that the freaking new light wouldn’t even turn on ?. Fluval is sending me another one that should arrive today so hopefully that one actually works. But wanted to share some pics of the new light. The old one is on the right, new one on the left. Also the connectors are better and have a tighter fit

    Fish for my Evo 12

I was wondering if a Royal Gramma Basslet would be okay in the Evo 12? The only other fish I currently have is a shark nose goby and I plan on purchasing a court jester goby. I’m really looking for an a more active fish other then a clown or firefish.
  9. I want to put a fuge on my 13.5 evo. I am not sure the glass can stand the weight of the hog about 2 gallon capacity. Any suggestion or thoughts

    WTB Fluval Evo 13.5 Light

Does anybody who upgraded their lighting for their fluval evo 13.5 want to sell their stock lighting fixture that came with the tank? Quote me price and shipping!
  11. About 6 months ago I joined this forum and started a IM Lagoon 25 as my first ever fish tank and posted an aquarium journal but never really got into the habit of updating the post. With that said, I ended up moving into a smaller apartment a couple weeks ago and I chose to downsize my tank and sell off some of my livestock, corals, and equipment because I may be moving again next year. I plan on being much more active in posting updates as well as on the forum in general. So without further ado... here's my new Fluval Evo 13.5: Equipment: Livestock: Pictures: Thanks for looking!
  12. Hi all, here is a link to my evo 12 with livestock. Hope it looks good and I can’t wait to get more corals in it. Sorry for the terrible editing, I had to do it on my phone since my computer is messed up.
  13. Here is a video I made unboxing the fluval evo 12 if anyone is interested. I made the video over a year ago when they first came out then I just left it in its box and barely started it up in September. I will be posting another video soon of me setting up the tank once I get my computer fixed. Hope everyone likes it ☺️
  14. I want to upgrade the stock pump on my fluval evo 13.5, but I would like to hear some pros and cons of the different options from actual owners. I recently purchased an Eheim Compact 1000 pump for this tank but I ended putting the stock pump back on due to high temps. My tank was reaching 87+ degrees F with the eheim whereas with the stock pump, i'm steady 80 degrees F. Eheim compact 1000: Pros: -smaller size than stock -260 GPH -no filter to clean Cons: -loud -5/8" non-barbed outlet (requires zip tie; fluval pump is 1/2" outlet) -heatsoaks the tank Some other names I hear about for this tank are Sicce 1.0 or 1.5, MJ1200, and Hydor 300. Do any of these options produce significant amounts of heat in the Evo 13.5? Not too concerned about the noise, but quiet is preferable.

    Help stocking Fluval Evo 13.5

Hello everybody, i just finiched cycling a fluval evo 13.5. I just put in my first fish which is a royal gramma, with the intentions of putting in a black ice clown and an azure damsel last. However, I have another tank which has a clown I love, and was wondering which would be the best choice for stocking the fluval (it will be a reef tank) option 1: 1 royal gramma 1 black ice clown 1 azure damsel option 2: 1 royal gramma 1 black ice clown 1 Picasso clown option 3: 1 black ice clown 1 Picasso clown i would like to have a good bit of movement in the tank, as I went with a 2 island aquascape and there is a lot of open room in the center. Option 1 or option 2 are the stocking options I would most like to do, while option 3 is my least favorite but I will if it's truly the best for the tank. I hate algae in tanks so I want to keep this water as crystal clear as possible! Any help or other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    First Reef Aquarium

Hi guys! This is my first reef tank, It's a fluval evo 13.5 with the fluval SEA PS2 mini protein skimmer and a hydor koralina 240 pump. My first corals were a mushroom rock, kenya tree, and green palythoas. My tank has been set up for almost 7 months now and since I bought my first corals I have accumulated 14 more types and not my tank is really starting to look like a reef! My favorite corals include the multiple types of zoas i have collected, my red digi, my aussie green leather, and finally my orange galaxea. The tank is stocked with a green chromi, two ocellaris clowns, and a royal gramma basselet, along with the classing cleanup crew of hermit crabs and some snails. I would love to hear your feedback and suggestions! sorry about the poor picture quality, iPhone 6
  17. Hello, I set up a saltwater tank about 10 days ago, a fluval evo 13.5 gallon. I used established live rock from an existing tank, and 2/3 live and and 1/3 normal sand. I used RO water as well. My lfs told me to put in 2 damsels, and gave me a bag of very dirty water from the fish store to pour in my taank to kick off the cycle. I now know these damsels should not be in a tank this young, and after researching, i decided i would take them out at the first sight of an ammonia spike. however, after testing the water every day i have had this tank, i have had no ammonia spike. my ammonia is about 0, nitrites 0, nitrates are at about 5ppm, and ph is a little low (i bought buffer). So, i have been waiting for ammonia to increase, to take out the damsles as i now know using them to cycle is cruel, but the readings of my water seem as though it is cycled. Could this be? I would think after having 2 fish, feeding them every day, using live rock, live sand, and a big bag of dirty water i should see some ammonia, yet i see none. And it cant be my test kit, as i have had 2 different lfs test the water, as well as myself, and gotten the same reading. Does this mean due to my tank size and using very established rock, my tank cycled extremley quickly? If anyone has comments or suggestions i would love to hear them! Thanks!
