Hi Everyone! This is my first post on this site I think so excuse me for any issues with formatting. A few months ago I kind of went on autopilot with my tank since I moved to Philadelphia and reef stores are no longer a thing. Stocking and Equipment I have a 10G tank, no sand, has been running for about a year. It's lit by an AI prime 16HD running all of the blue channels around 70 percent and the cool white channel at about 5 percent for 3 hours a day. Total light is on for probably about 8 hours a day. Flow is provided by the smaller Nero and another small hyger power head. There is also an ATO (water is provided by an RODI unit) Stocking is many zoas, small torch head, a few more LPS, a leather, a clownfish, a cleaner shrimp, a few snails and a single very happy millipora. I'm sure I'm missing a few random coral, no huge colonies though. Parameters To be honest since I do 50% water changes weekly, I decided not to invest too much into testing. I do have Hannah checkers for alkalinity and calcium, but that's about it. I also know testing for phosphates during an outbreak isn't very useful as GHA likely uptakes most phosphates The Problem I cannot get rid of GHA! I cleaned most of it manually and using some hydrogen peroxide on a few rocks and brushed most of it off, the main rock I scrubbed with H2O2 regrew GHA within a week. I only feed a few pellets every 2-3 days to my clown and shrimp so nutrients should not be high... water reads 0 TDS.... any help would be appreciated!

My tank has been already 'built', however I thought I would try to share photos of how it matures, even if it is only for my own entertainment. Having previously fallen in love with the freshwater hobby over a year ago, I'm not particularly experienced, however I like to think I've learnt a lot since starting. I was first attracted to the saltwater hobby over a year ago, when I discovered the first marine lfs where I live. I instantly fell in love with the 'more colourful' fish, and I thought that corals would certainly be far too hard! Fast forward to March this year, and being in Australia, I had been spending a lot of time at home. Eventually my girlfriend allowed me to get a second tank if that was what I kept to. I'm proud to say its stayed at two tanks for the time being! In April, I picked the Waterbox 10 at my local lfs because I liked the cube shape, and the AIO nature of it, and I thought it would be a reasonable place to start in the saltwater hobby. After consulting my lfs, I bought everything that was needed, setting it up with: - 5 kgs Caribsea Dry Rock Arches, - ~6 kgs Course Aragonite Sand, - AI Prime 16HD with Flex Arm Then what followed was an extremely frustrating process of waiting. I had prepared myself for approximately a month of cycling, and my ammonia was at 0 after approximately 3 weeks, but the Red Sea test kit showed nitrite at the maximal 1, with nitrates often being 5-10. This led me to believe I couldn't start until I had 0 nitrate due to my lfs and my experience in freshwater. I then was curious about what could possibly be causing this, and I discovered my rocks were leaching small amounts of ammonia, and reasonable amounts of nitrite, by way of an experiment. I did this by performing an experiment with a control, with the rocks separately in buckets of water, and with the sand again in separate water. The rocks had 0.25 ammonia each and 0.5 nitrite each after 2 days. I have no explanation for how this occurred. (I'm a science student, can you tell?) I eventually came upon information that nitrite is not toxic to marine life in low levels around July, after buying and using so much bottle bac! However being cautious I waited it out, hoping my nitrite would reduce. Finally I bit the bullet and bought a basic ocellaris clownfish. Thankfully, all was well for about a week, with no signs of stress, and so I wanted to get 'it' a friend. Whilst at the lfs I fell in love with a picasso percula clownfish, as well as a small green bta. I also grabbed a small clean up crew of turbos and hermits. Having researched the gbta previously, I know it was a dubious decision, however, is my tank mature after being dormant since April? Who knows? The gbta quite quickly settled in a location and to my surprise was extremely happy visually. A few days later the picasso percula then started hosting it! I then visited the lfs a couple weeks later, where my girlfriend had spotted a nem that she loved. So I figured when I returned I'd entertain her and see what nem it was. It was a 'rainbow' bubble tip, and when we returned to the lfs she pointed it out in their display. I asked about their availability, and they offered to sell that exact nem to me, as it had split! I had also hoped that given my clowns weren't paired they could have a nem each for the time being! Unfortunately the percula decided both nems were theirs, defending them both from the poor ocellaris. I'll leave the thread at that for now, I hope you enjoy it!

Hi all. Since I’ve just finished this project, I figured I’d share it on here. this tank started as an ordinary 10 gallon setup filtered by an aqua clear 70, but I always wanted an aio tank, but couldn’t find a reasonably priced tank where I live. After waiting a while, I pulled the trigger on the lifeguard aquatics 9.98 gallon aio tank. At first I was happy with it, but I quickly realized the design flaws with that tank. Firstly, the overflow weir cut outs are too small. That combined with the improper heights of the baffles meant my return section was running dry at an alarming rate. After giving up with that tank, I decided to try to create my own aio tank. Since I don’t have the means (or budget) to have the aio system to be created from acrylic, I decided to take a risk and use corrugated plastic. I found a black sheet of the material for only 5.99 CAD which was very convenient. The most time consuming part was precisely cutting the overflow, because I tried to make it look proper by printing a template, and gluing it to the plastic. Upon realizing that I Couldn’t properly make the rounded overflow like the real tanks, I just cut out a rectangle opening, and cut out small rectangular pieces to act as the barriers. I then siliconed them to the back of the opening. It’s fragile and crude, but it works. for the baffles, I modelled them after the Fiji cube aio box. The intake chamber will consist of the media, and the return chamber will have the heater and the pump. I went this way because I didn’t think I would have enough space for a middle chamber. Soon I will make some sort of media basket to properly contain the filter media in the first chamber. Please disregard my crude silicone job. At first I had taped off a perimeter to keep it neat, but after I removed the tape I decided to add more silicone to be safe. P.S The tank is still cycling, no livestock is in here yet. thanks for taking a look everyone.

I have managed a saltwater culture lab for the past three years so I have experience but I have never personally kept marine species before. I am excited to get started! Hello all, im considering getting a 10 gallons tank and putting a clownfish in it. Would 10 gallons be too small? I tried researching/browsing forums but it’s sort of a mixed bag of responses. If I do get a 10 gallon would it be possible to put a hi fin goby with it as well or would it be better to do one or the other? Is there a smaller variety of clownfish that would do better in a 10g? Thanks!

Hello, What are the best clip on lights that will make my coral the most colorful? All the lights I see online seem like they just make everything look blue which isn’t the look that I’m going for. The lighting I see from like professional YouTube channels makes everything look so pretty though is probably too big an expensive for what I’m looking for. Any recommendations for a clip on light $200 or under that can bring out corals? Thanks!

Hello all, im planning on getting a 10 gallon reef tank and I’m wondering if it’s safe to keep a clownfish with a watchman goby/pistol shrimp in there. Would it be better to keep just the clownfish on its own? Or to just keep a watchman goby and pistol shrimp on their own? Thanks! -
Ok everyone I have been looking to replace my MJ1200 return pump for a silent one. We recently moved to a new studio apartment and noise has become an issue with it. I was looking around and there isn’t that much information as to what pumps fit comfortably and silently into the return chamber of this tank. the MJ1200 is , of course, discontinued, but the dimensions according to BRS are Dimensions - 6" x 3" x 2" it has been running for two years but we had a larger house before where the tank sat in a different room to where we sleep ...now here we are. the IM Mighty Jet (326gph) seems like an obvious choice, but it is $109. Not a problem but you do have to take a step back before you just dish out a hundred bux. I haven’t been able to find anyone using this pump in this tank, except for one snippet of a video on YouTube (scroll to 0:46) that shows it put into the tank, but only for a second and the pump looks like it doesn’t really fit except for an awkward placement where it is touching all the walls of the chamber.... doubt that will be very silent. But who knows...? The sicce silent line is pretty convincing but there are many mixed reviews out there. Some say it isn’t silent, others say the opposite. at this point, it isn’t the cost that is the issue, it’s the silence that I desperately seek. The tank has a Vortech mp10, so all I really need is to push water back into the tank, I would guesstimate ~200gph should do the trick...

Update for 12/29/20 So I'm jumping back into the hobby after a few years, sorta. My first nano was a Fluval Edge 12g. Let me just say it was a learning experience and PITA to maintain. A couple of years after breaking that one down I got a JBJ Cubey 3g. Also a PITA but I managed to have it last up until now with 2 rock nems and a small frogspawn that survived. After 2 horrible tanks to maintain as reef tanks I am here again now. I started the cycle on 4/29/18. This build started with an old standard 10-Gallon aquarium I had laying around from another project. The tank was pretty dirty and the top rim was damaged. Rather than throw it away I decided to up-cycle it into a nano-reef. I cleaned the tank up and decided to remove the broken black trim along the top. Rather than replace it I decided to leave it as a faux rimless tank. I collected a few other odds and ends laying around and then made a few small purchases for the remaining items. This will be my official Tank Journal Might see many posts from me in a row. That is because i will be using this more like a journal than a forum post, just to help me keep track of thoughts and the like SO here it is starting a reef Tank up to compliment 2 10 gallon tanks one is for my sons upgrade to a dirted tank form his 5.5 aga planted the other will be my Reef tank as finances permit!? Going to go with the following equipment to start 10 Gallon tank from big box store as you can see I have here Either Top Fin 20 or AQ 20 have not decided yet but leaning on the AQ 20 till i can get a AQ 70 ABI Tuna Blua Par 38 but not sure if i should get 12 or 23 watt version? Hydor 50w Heater Live sand and rock locally I mainly want to keep a purple fire fin with some torches and lots of Zoas and plays For salt i was going to go with the red sea max coral pro Have refractometer was reading on deep sand beds and would love to keep a 4 inch sand bed but it is only a 10 gallon so that might be out! Would love to here form all of you out there any tips tricks and cheats you all got please share! My big Question of the post is the Top Fin or the AQ 20 till i can afford a AQ 70

I'm a noob and need some help. The husband had a salt previously and we have down sized. In that, we moved all the rock and it fits in a 10g tank, but I'm worried that it's too much for the tank. I'm keeping it super simple, a turbo for the algae and a clown. He seems super happy, but water changes are a little hectic. I usually end up moving rock out to clean around it. How much should I keep, what is best to do with the rock I dont want? I've read about people just taking it out and drying it out. This rock is over 10yrs old, I'm just now starting to take this up again. And amazingly, there still is stuff coming out of the rock. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have an established 35L nano with a occy Clownfish and a Fire Shrimp. I am thinking of adding a Goby to help keep the sand clean. Which would be the best Goby to add or would this be overcrowding the tank. I don’t want the clown to become hostile to a small Goby. Thanks in advance

Hey everyone so I've been on here a while but never documented my DIY 25g since I started it back around march last year, well I regret not documenting it, and lately I've been wanting to start up a smaller tank, so I thought, why not make a thread so I can record it so I can look back on it? I figure this way I can also learn from others and try to keep my questions in at least a lesser amount of threads. So its been official, I took the plunge on buying 14 ibs of BRS reef saver along with some hanna reagent about an hour ago. I made my tank DIY last time, and although I am still interested in doing that since I can tailor it to my needs, Im not the best craftsman wise. So I am currently looking into a couple tanks before I pull the trigger later tonight. it seems I have a couple options Im most interested in; the waterbox 7g or 10g IM nuvo fusion 10 I am a bit torn between the nuvo 10g or waterbox 10g. the fact they are plug and play is a nice bonus, compared to when I did my DIY, as doing a false wall is a bit frustrating when attempting not to shatter acrylic from drilling or scoring. the two are essentially the same price, although the IM nuvo comes with the lid, so I am leaning towards that. How does everyone who has one of these feel about the back chambers? I am currently debating between a Bare bottom tank or at least shallow sand. I never tried a Bare bottom tank and I think I'd really enjoy the look and cleanliness of it since Im already bad at vacuuming my sand in my tank. what do you guys suggest? my planned inhabitant will be either my Rainford's Goby or my Tail Spot Blenny from my 25g. Lately I've seen some random aggression from the blenny towards the Rainford, and Im planning to take one of them out, leaning towards the Rainford. I feel conflicted about putting the rainford in the 10g if its a Bare bottom, since he hasnt taken prepared food (live BBS, frozen, pellet) yet but picks at rocks and sifts the sand. I'm not sure if its refusal of prepared food or rather him being so passive, my other fish take it from him before he has a chance to eat? Besides hopefully the goby once cycled, I do plan to stock with coral, although Im not sure which yet, I know I have a few frags of zoas in my 25 without a home yet, but I also do really like the look of euphillia, and ricordeas. maybe euphillia on the top with zoas and rics mid to low? the lighting will be my finnex 12" Planted+ until I am sure about which Light i want, I am currently thinking of a par LED bulb to hang over, but I might get another nanobox light, just depends what I end up doing, and feels better to me. For my Filtration, I feel like I dont have too much space to play with like I did in the 25g. what would you guys suggest here? I imagine a skimmer would be useful for phosphates, plus a small bio pellet reactor for nitrates, but I am interested to see what others would say instead. maybe purigen and phosguard? not sure yet, but plenty of time to think. Maybe just cut a portion of my chaeto and carry it over, with activated carbon. ~~ anyways Im sure that might be TLDR but thanks everyone who read, I love seeing other peoples journals for reference, and learning from their experiences with their tanks, I'm hoping mine can help someone elses once it matures.

Hey everyone! This is my first post here! Gonna post some progress on my 10g SPS dominant reef tank. Been up and running for a few months now. Instagram: @nano.reefer.10g Standard 10g - Bahamas Oolite Sand Light - Coral Box Moon LED Plus Flow - 150gph HOB, 425gph & 240gph Hydor Korlias HOB has chemi-pure blue and chaeto(with light on 24/7) Fish - Tailspot Blenny & Captive Raised Spotted Mandarin (I spot feed mandarin mysis and cyclops, which she(i think) was already eating when I got her. Also have a culture of copepods separately I use to keep population up) CUC - 6+ nassarius snails, one turbo snail, 2 astrea snails. 2 blue leg and 2 scarlet reef hermits. Lots of micro brittle stars Will post corals as I get to them. Thanks for checkin it out!

To kick things off, this thread will be about updates and the progression of my nuvo 10 thats goal is to be a sps dominant aquarium. Iv been lurking around for a while. I started keeping saltwater tanks on and off for the last 14 years but have really started taking it serious for the last 4 years. I started with a 10g glass aquarium with a HOB filter, it was a FOWLR. Then I got a 30 with some softies. Then I got my first AIO the IM Abyss. The Abyss started leaking so IM warrantied it but the tank was no longer available. So they gave me the lagoon 25 and the nuvo 10 in its place. I like both tanks and decided I want the 25 to be softies and LPS and the 10 to be LPS and SPS. Any suggestions from ppl who have thriving SPS corals in a Nano would be very appreciated and pointed out any mistakes I may be making would be noted. Hey reefers! One of the last things I ask to set up my 10g reef tank is the clean up crew! I decided on having a no crab clean up crew, because of their possibly violent nature, and having to place in more shells. My stocking is just an Ocellaris Clown, a sexy shrimp, and some tisbe pods being fed Spectrum Thera A pellets daily, with Rods food biweekly. @Lula_Mae has recommended me several types of snails, but I am still unclear on how many to add. So how many and what kinds of snails should I add, and when? Thanks -Generic Reefer

Hello! I have a few questions concerning the placement of my soft corals. The aquascape of the tank is so that there are two arches of rock in the back of the tank. On one arch I want to put some Xenia, GSP, and a Toadstool, and on the other, some Clove polyps, Ricordea, and another Toadstool. When it comes to the point in which the corals grow next to each other, will I need to intervene? Should I rearrange the corals? The Xenia, GSP, and Toadstools are something I would really like to have, so if it absolutely comes to it, I will try to create separate "islands" for them. Thanks -Generic Reefer
