can we? Or can we not?

So as the title states, can we? Or can we not? Being Reef hobbiest as a whole we all have many things we say can or cannot be done, from fish store employees, to hobby literature, , veterans, to beginners, everybody’s opinions are different. I’ve worked in the industry for years, and have heard many many things. What I’ve noticed is most of these have no bases in actual science. Some of which I’ve proven through expierments to be false and others true (gorgonians do not die if they touch air, some sponges however do) what I have found is a “you cannot unless you....” is more appropriate. So everybody post things that you think cannot be done or “rules” you have heard that you are unsure about and let’s discuss them. See if someone has evidence to the contrary. And maybe have some results for expierments proving if this to be the case or not. Please let’s not take unneeded risks with livestock, always be mindful and responsible of the creatures we care for. And please keep an open mind and remember some of the species we keep now would have been considered impossible not that long ago.

    Tank Smell

Anyone experience tank smell after doing a good cleaning with big water change on their tank. I was scrubbing cyno and syponing it out not sure if that’s what caused the smell
  3. Was planning on upgrading my tank to this 24 gal but decided to just wait until I can upgrade to something in the triple digits. Tank has been completely cleaned out and scrubbed real good, in great condition with absolutely no leaks. The person I bought it from also provided a stand but it’s in rough condition so I never used it, you’re more than welcome to take that as well. Comes with the pump and a spinning nozzle for random flow throughout the tank. Surface skimmer. Stock hood (missing the little door that you lift to feed the fish) has the stock light and works just fine. Does not come with any other filtration media in the chambers but I will be more than happy to provide box crate and zip ties for you to make your own filter media basket (which is way better than the original basket anyways.) I can also throw in some polyfill to get you started on the mechanical filtration. Bought it for $175 yours for $90 LOCAL PICK UP ONLY!!!!! San Fernando Valley, California

Advice for choosing my first tank

Hi, guys! I've been lurking for quite a while on this forum and I am reading a lot as I am going to buy my first reef tank in the weeks to come. I've been doing extensive research, but still would like to pick your brains for the first marine tank purchase (as I already have one freshwater tank). I already have a RO/DI water system. Also, take in consideration that I am based in Europe, Romania, so I don't have access american brands, or it's very expensive. So, this are the AIO tanks that I am currently pondering which one to go with: Innovative Marine Nuvo 10 + perfect size for my desk, so I won't need to buy a stand - small sump, with little space, so I would have to choose carefully what to put in (I am looking at you - protein skimmer ) Innovative Marine Nuvo 30 (I like cubes) + big, enough space for equipment, I have a great deal right now from a fish store - expensive to start, needs a desk Eco Mini 28 + big, skimmer integrated, refugium with light built-in, 2 trays of Miracle Mud - expensive to start, needs a desk Resun DMS 500 PL + big and cheap as cost, enough space for equipment - expensive to start (but balanced with the cost of the tank), needs a desk What do you think it will be the best choice for start? Thank you so much in advance!

    Ammonia outbreak

Hey guys my tank has roughly 0.25-0.50 ppm ammonia, and I have 3 fish and 13 clean up crew members. To kick start the tank I used Bio-spira, then added fish 3 days later. I probably should've waited longer for the tank to cycle more. I tested the water parameters yesterday and all were fine. I did a 10% water change and added ammo-lock. Anything else I should do? I almost want to drain the whole tank and start the cycle over.. but where do i put my fish?

    Fish Movement

So here is the deal. I have two tanks. I have a 20 gallon tank and a 5 gallon tank. I want to move 1 of the fish from the 5 gallon tank to the 20 gallon tank. Here is the parameters. In the big 20 gallon tank, I have 2 clownfish, 1 little yellow fish, and 2 shrimps. I would like to move a four striped damsel from the small tank to the big one. Could that work? Would the fish get into fights? Any help would be amazing Thanks, Trev

  13. I have a 8 Gal LPS dominated reef tank. I'm planning on building the sump. I already have the tank for the sump which is a 5 Gal tank. My question is, which protein skimmer would fit best in my sump ? https://www.tokopedia.com/aquastop/jebo-178-protein-skimmer https://www.tokopedia.com/ikansapoesapoe/jebo-protein-skimmer-180-ii https://www.tokopedia.com/ikansapoesapoe/resun-protein-skimmer-sk-300 https://www.tokopedia.com/abfaquatic/protein-skimmer-resun-sk-05-aquarium-laut P.S. I'm picking these not because they're cheap but rather because these are the only ones that can fit in my stand
  14. Hello Everyone, I've been a member on here for awhile and had another build thread but i thought it would be time to start a new one for this little tank I have own over the past year. This is my first time keeping a tank under 30 gallons so I thought I would share with everyone my experiences with this tank. IM Nuvo Fusion 10 Gallon tank Skkye LED Light InTank Filter Floss Basket BRS ROX 0.8 Carbon & GFO Aqueon Pro 150 watt Heater Hydor Koralia 240 gph powerhead Water Bottle ATO (LOL) Current Inhabitants 2 Clownfish Yellow Watchman Goby 1 Rock Flower Anemone Serpent Starfish Hermit Crabs I will be updating my thread shortly, I have a few pics of the progression I need to upload to my loader.
  15. Hello, I’m wondering if someone can help identify this thing I noticed in my tank today. I did see this originally on one of my small purple snails and though it was part of the shell but now this thing is on the back wall of the tank. Kind of looks like a pill bug. My other snail has one on it to unless it has also moved.....
  16. After about 4 months of trial and error and perfecting the setup, everything in my 1 gal tank seems to have stableized, you can't be too sure about these setups although, one second you'll have a booming mini ecosystem the next you'll have a watery graveyard devoid of life, that's what I've been going through ever since late July. Some history on the tank: The tank was started when I recvied a one gal jewelry holder, it had 3 drawers, my 1st attempt at a nano reef in about March was uncessful and I closed the project after about 3 weeks into my initial cycle, at that time the tank had a tetra 1-3 gal filter on it and an air stone, in late July I recvied a small piece of Dry rock from the Dominican Republic after a family member came home from vacation, they thought it looked neat and gave it to me, I seeing as I had a nano tank lying around, I now did some more reaserch and decided it would be best if I put my 5-10 gal tetra fliter on the setup, and my cycle begun, I cycled my tank on raw talapia, and waited. After many blooms of various organisms, I only had a 5000k LED bulb on the setup at the time, which grew algae like mad my first attempt at adding coral and 2 snails failed the 1st time, but a couple of days ago, my algae started clearing up and I noticed my microfauna population is really booming, and so I purchased a trochus snail and another GSP frag, I also added blue LEDS and another filter that will act as a refugium and help to add more flow
  17. Hey guys, I want to add a 40g FOWLR lionfish tank to my bedroom fishtank corner but I need to make sure that the floors can support the weight. As seen in the diagram below, i would put it along the exterior wall of my house, on the second floor. My room is situated at the back corner of my house so i have two exterior walls, but the unmarked one pictured is interior. I've read a bunch of articles saying that it should be fine but I just want to be sure. Thanks in advance for the feedback! You can follow all my tank builds n such on my youtube page, linked on my profile.

    100 Zen Build

We love including our customers and getting your opinions on new builds! This is a 100G Zen tank that we set up last week for one of our customers. What do you think we should add to this tank next? Which of our Cadlights tanks do you have set up in your home? Lets see what you got!
  19. So I need some opinions from you experienced reefers!! Right now I have a Fluval evo 13.5 and am looking for a slightly bigger/better tank. The evo is in fallow right now due to brooklynella so I guess now is the time to upgrade! This tank will be coming to and from college so I am keeping it at 20 gallons max. I am deciding between: the IM fusion 20 with a nanobox duo or the Red Sea max nano i like the look of the Red Sea, and love that it includes a ATO and Skinner as well as a stand. I also really love the nanobox duo so this is a tough one. The stand I have now will fit the fusion 20, but does not have room for an ATO. While I love the look of the Red Sea I am not so sure about the AI prime HD. Anyone have any experience with it?? I also am a bit skeptical on the included skimmer and ATO on the reefer, but I know Red Sea is a good brand so maybe these components are actually worth it?? Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Also, I do not plan on doing SPS. I'm not at that level yet.. especially with having to move this tank around
  20. I believe the tank is a Oceanic brand. I just replaced the bulkheads. Comes with 1" threaded drains and 3/4 barb bulkheads for the returns. Will uploads pics as soon as I am home. Black trim, no cracks in trim. Very few minor scratches of left panel. Great condition. Needs a little cleaning still, but ready for water. Seals are in great condition. Comes with mega flow overflows. I do have some loc line sitting around for the tank also. Currently have freshwater in it for cleaning. Tank only. Located in 30 minutes south of Valparaiso Indiana, 46383. Looking for- 3D Printer 4k TV (min 40") Kessil Lights AIO Tanks (IM, Fluval, etc..) Looking for $225

    Clownfish Fighting Solutions?

I have four clownfish currently in a 125 gallon aquarium i recently added one to the original three and the first few days he was bullied but now one of the clownfish breaks off from his group to be with the new one but still chases him and makes him submit and will be with him alot of the day now but will still sleep and hang out with his group what should i do and what does this mean
  23. My clownfish is right next to my pulsing Xenia and occasionally touching it and it has paired with 4 different anemones so it knows what it's doing has anyone ever seen this behavior he even flaps his fins and give it current but never goes in will he pair with it and how will I know if he's about to
  24. Hello all, I'm brand new to the hobby. It has interested me for about 6 months now, and I think it's time I get my hands wet, both metaphorically and literally. I'm primarily wanting to create a tank for coral reef. I have looked into numerous tanks, and have my final 2 picks. The jbj rimless 10g tank and the Innovative Marine NUVO 20g tank. I'm asking for opinions on which would be better in the end, for me. To start, my budget is set to a maximum of $1K startup including coral. So far, the coral I have decided on are Zoanthids, Blastomussa, Pulsing Xenia, Scolymia, and Wellsophyllia (later on). I'm open to more ideas, but trying to avoid coral who grow significantly quicker, and coral like toadstool, who need significant space to really be happy while blocking light below them. I'd rather stay away from coral that shock as well.. but open to them. Some that add more motion, might be nice. My main concern is lighting, flow, temperature, and filtration. Any experience with these two tanks and have suggested upgrades to go ahead and get with your suggested tank. I'm looking at getting the full start up kit for both tanks. Currently my reasoning between the two are: jbj - Cleaner design for my modern decor, would look more balanced/perfect in appearance with table it is to be on top. Clear top IM - More space for more coral, more forgiving on maintaining. Will look awkward, but steady on table. Two LED lighting for more controlled PAR? Don't like the meshed top. I have a cat, that's why the top is relevant. She's well trained, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Location of table will receive very little natural light. Is there a major difference in time requirements to maintain, or steady heating? Are the LEDs included sufficient? Would it be easier to maintain the ecosystem by adding marine life? Don't know where to start with those, but if I did get any.. an arrow crab would definitely be apart of my tank. Also, general purchases like a scraper to clean sides and front, or specific testing kits, etc? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you
