Does the refugium need to be on the same level as the sump?

I've been eyeing the Seamless Sump system available on customaquarium.com, and am quite in favor of the system called the 1200 low profile 40, which includes a single drain sock tub, media tray baffle tub with return pump chamber, and separate refugium box connected to the return pump chamber with bulkheads and tubing. However, any stand I'll be getting will be about 24"-30" wide, while the entire sump system is 40" wide. I want to know if it would work if I set the sump system, from the sock tub to the baffle tub including the return pump chamber, on a lower shelf in my stand and placing the refugium on a higher shelf. It might be a foot or a foot and a half of tubing to connect them at most, with the possibility of 1/2" tubing or 1-1/2" tubing to connect them. If I put them on separate levels like this, I would set my emergency drain line into the refugium, which I figure would drain into the rest of the sump system via the connected tubing. Is this a possible set up, or should I just stick with in-sump or hob refugium? I plan on adding a mandarin dragonet, so a refugium of some sort for 'pods is a must. -
What size sump set up should I use for a FOWLR tank?

I'm doing my research before setting up a FOWLR tank. I have a few different options in mind, but all would be using a sump tank in the stand as the primary filtration, and the live rock in the display tank as secondary form of filtration (which I'm not really counting on for much of anything, but know that it should help a little overall). The potential tank sizes I'm currently looking at are: 20g High / 29g / custom made 30g I want to know what the best, or most recommended, size tank would be for my sump. I've found several different kits that can be DIY installed into a tank and set up as I please, which I'm currently looking at. As well as the possibility of getting a ready made sump system like EShopps AR-100 Aqua-Fuge Refugium Sump, or like customaquarium.com's Seamless Sump system, specifically the low profile 23 sump system or the low profile 40 sump system, if I move the refugium to a different shelf in the stand. Fiji Cube makes DIY baffle kits for 20g long tanks as well as 29g tanks, and in theory I could fit either into my stand as I haven't chosen a stand yet. The tank would be moderately stocked, I believe. A pair of clownfish, a mandarin dragonet, very likely some kind of goby such as a sharknose goby or a watchman goby, and possibly hermit crabs and/or snails. I want to keep the system relatively simple, as this will be my first salt-water tank, but not my first aquarium or my largest aquarium ever. I am, however, very set on stocking options except for a clean-up crew such as crabs, snails, or gobies, and am happy to take recommendations there as well. There's a possibility of adding an anemone at some point, likely a bubble tip anemone, but I'd want to make sure my filtration can handle one. What would be my best potential set-up? -
Hey there! Recently, I have reduced this hobby to just one tank in light of life changes and an intense schedule working at an observatory. Although never intending to set up another reef tank, this 9 to 5 contest twisted my arm into setting up this small reef tank 🙈 In all respects though, I think this is going to be my endgame reef and plan to have it running until in 30 years I finally get my 220 or get out of the hobby. Like the title says, my goal with this tank is to have it be a "jungle" of SPS corals, or rather, a dedicated SPS system (but only between the hours of 9 to 5... 😉) This tank will be plumbed into a sump and will have a display fuge if everything goes to plan. I still have to tack down a few items that are going to power this tank, but I look forward to creating a neat little tank to help me get through the work day. Through a series of events I came into the possession of a Mini Complete Tank. Having an affinity towards small aquariums, I've always wanted to give these tiny tanks a shot. The packaging was neat and the bonus of a MCT sticker and a bamboo tray from TankMods was a great surprise. Putting the tank together though I wasn't crazy impressed with the sump, infact it bothered me so much that I decided to make a tiny custom sump, then a media basket, and later a stand to give this tank a little more pizzazz and enhance the functionality of everything. Anyways, this all led me down a rabbit hole that seemingly has no end. So buckle up and join me for a tiny adventure. I just got my first sump tank and I'm a little paranoid (ok, alot) that the thing is going to flood my house. I've already had a few near floods and I definitely don't trust this thing. The sump is like this insatiable monster that continues sucking water out of the tank and making this not-so-pleasant sucking sound. Are all first-time sump users paranoid? Will I just need to build trust with my aquarium over time? There does not seem to be a way to stop the perpetual sucking sound. I will call the Reef Octopus people on Monday and see why their tank is so LOUD. If there isn't a fix, it looks like I'm out of luck. Return policies don't really seem to exist in the aquarium business unless the product is defective. I get it but maybe I should buy from Amazon.com next time? I was looking at the Aquaforest OceanGuard 435 (82gal Aquarium) and this Polish company seems to have some amazing products. Their products come with human-readable instructions and helpful tips. My Reef Octopus came with a few diagrams. Anyway, my house is not flooded... yet.

As I’m researching reef tanks, I keep seeing sumps and I’m not completely sure what they are. Is It just another type of filter? Do I need more advanced filtration for a 5 gallon reef tank than a HOB? I was planning on using a seachem tidal 35 since it says it has a built in surface skimmer but now I’m not sure if that’s gonna be enough filtration since I’ve seen people use sumps for pico tanks. My other concern is that the media basket is gonna be too small since I have it on my 20 gallons freshwater aquarium and it’s pretty tight but I don’t know if the next size up would fit on my 5 gallon tank. Plus I don’t want it to be an eye sore when I actually fill up the tank since it’s cube shaped with no designated spot to hide equipment. Also, for filtering I was going to use the bio bag and sponge that it comes with along with some carbon and filter floss. Is there any other and/or better filter media I should use instead? 🤔 thanks!

Hello Everyone, I'm a new Nano-Reef member, but a long time lurker and user of information on this forum. I have a question about a DIY acrylic sump that I built that is falling apart. It’s my very first time doing something like this and I built it because my cabinet is long and narrow, and nothing off the shelf would fit it, but also because I wanted to experience building one. Well, I did it but not very well. One corner seam leaks no matter what I do to it and now the back panel bottom seam has completely detached. I feel like it’s a goner at this point but I want to try to fix it since I can’t recycle it — I really don’t want to be wasteful. If I can’t fix it, then are there some ways to give the acrylic used on this project new life? Any help or guidance would be so appreciated. Thank you so much. Process: I loosely followed a video from Joey, “The King of DIY” on YouTube and I used the “pin method” with two T-pins as I saturated the pieces I wanted to join together. Then I waited one minute and pulled the pins. Admittedly, I cemented the front, back, and side panels (in that order) to the bottom panel first instead of cementing them to each other. I also didn't get better at pulling pins until after completing the third panel. I used Amazon boxes to keep the panels at a stable 90 angle and in place while I waited for everything to set. And that's about it for how I did it.

So this is going to be one of those stories that starts with a dream followed by absolute disaster, We will see the loss of everything and the journey it takes to get back and push on to greater goals. I truly thank everyone that takes their time to read along and follow my journey with reefing, Through the bad the ugly and the eventual gorgeous place a box of water can bring! Our story starts about a year ago, I was at a friends house and he had in his living room a 60g Cube reef. Personally i had never seen a saltwater tank outside of marineland (I know I know the evil bastards lol XD, this was when i was very young and more than 25 years ago). my friend explained the tank to me and showed me the few coral he had. After a few weeks I was still fascinated with the tank so he got me to start testing the parameters and do maintenance on his tank, I took in as much info as i could at this time as I was quickly becoming obsessed with this hobby 😄 A childhood dream was rediscovered. Fast forward a couple months At this point I felt pretty confident in my basic knowledge of reefing and had saved up some money. I search around for a used reef tank with all the equipment included and found a 125g corner bowfront with a HOB overflow to a 60g sump, Bubble magus curve 7 skimmer, and a programable 4' t5 fixture. It even came with live rock, sand and some corals for 1000$. We put the coral in a holding tank while we moved my new tank to my apartment, gave it a quick clean and reset the tank in its new home. The tank went through an instant cycle basically (it took a week) because i used all the old live rock and sand with about 20g of the old water also left the filters etc dirty for the week to help get the process kickstarted. after that i added a few fish and the coral that was chilling in the holding tank. I enjoyed this process and my new tank sooo much everything was looking healthy and I was learning so much so fast at this point it was Sept. 1 2020. Then disaster. I lived in an apartment building and mid Sept. 2020 we had a new tenant move in. This person was a little off and within a few days everyone in the building had noticed her odd behaviour and were getting uneasy. Within 1 week that tenant had a schizophrenic break and the voices told her to set her boyfriend on fire, she poured gas over her boyfriend and the couch he slept on then continued pouring it out her door and down the hallway of the top floor of a 3 story building. She lit it and ran outside. It was 2:00am Sept. 20 2020 I lived in an apartment on the second floor luckily when I first heard the fire alarm i went to my balcony and heard screaming someone yelled the building is on fire. Now I'm sure most people have heard many fire alarms go off in their life and 99.9999% it isn't actually a fire just some burnt toast in the toaster or the frying pan is smoking hot cooking some bacon and eggs or any number of other silly non consequential reasons a fire alarm will start yelling at you, so we can all agree that when you first hear a alarm you are probably thinking its no big deal well this I quickly found out was that 0.00001%. My friends were directly above me in one of the apartments on the third floor they were trapped with young kids luckily they had a couple friends over that night. As soon as I heard the building was on fire I heard my buddy almost in tears yelling down to me that they couldn't get out of their door. A few seconds later he was hanging over the balcony by one hand down towards mine and his wife was started handing him the kids one by one he managed to take each kid with one hand and pass them to me after we got all three kids down safely to my apartment him and his other two friends climbed down and we got the kids out of the building to the street. One of my buddies friends helped my buddies wife get down and out of the building, at that point the smoke was coming into my place and starting to fill up the ceiling i had just enough time to grab my cat and run out of the doors. The firefighters arrived but because it was set by gasoline the flames didn't go out for hours everything in the entire building was lost luckily everyone got out and there was only one person with injuries. At this point understandably I was crushed... and while I am writing this it is still something that I have only barely been able to start processing and healing from. I had just lost everything in my life. It took about a month and a half to find a new apartment at which time I was couch surfing with a friend, when i moved into my new place I was gifted a 20g breeder and a 29g tank from a close friend that is really into fish and had a few tanks laying around that he could spare and free up some room at the same time 😄 . This was amazing it helped my depression and gave me hope that soon I would be able to have this dream of a saltwater reef. Its almost 2 weeks after I moved in and its Dec. 1 2020. I get some dry rock and some sand toss it into the 29g with some saltwater to start curing the rock. I'm really hesitant to run a nano tank at this point so i'm still trying to find something bigger to run at this point but all I can find that i can afford is the glass panels from a 75g so i buy that and make some grandiose plan of making a pentagon tank out of it that would have a plywood bottom epoxied and be around 150g. Two weeks later I find a 25g rimless cube tank with a clean looking stand and the dude thats selling it is awesome he only wanted 60$ for it. I buy the cube and its just such a nice looking tank even though it is only 25g. At this point I know I want a sump but I also know I want some fish soon to help get past that horrible disaster, so I bite the bullet and set it up with an internal filter a couple small powerheads and heater. I cycle my tank for a month no fish then start looking around to find some clowns that don't look like Nemo 😄 . A local guy is selling baby clowns and had some of the ones that i was looking for. I buy a midnight clown from him and get it settled in its new home. which brings us up to current basically now what? Well upgrades of course. Now I mentioned that i grabbed that glass from a 75g, now I've also managed to grab a couple beat up old tanks people were throwing out so I would have some glass for projects so its time to build. 25g Cube + 50g Custom Rimless Build The Plan So essentially the idea is to add a sump to the 25g cube now looking around if i want to buy a overflow box thats is decent i'm looking at around 200$ cad and pre fire that would have bothered me but at the moment I am still trying to replace years of furniture, studio equipment, and decor so money is super tight lol. So that being said im not spending that much on a overflow box that will make me have to use a internal box portion that takes up room inside my tank, which is already imo small. Lets build it 😄 , I have glass and a cutter I have silicone and a caulking gun, I can pick up the right drill bits for cutting holes and save a ton of money, also I can notch my tank allowing me to not have an internal box portion to my overflow. Next I will cut down the 75g glass panels i have to make a custom rimless tank that should sit around 50g, for this i will use the excess glass and build a bean animal overflow box for the 50g. Finally I am going to make baffles for my 20g breeder and use that for a sump, Both tanks will drain into the sump and will each have their own return pumps by doing this I can ease my mind and minimize the un-stability of a nano tank system making my overall system volume to 85g-90g -
Help! I set up my 16-gallon Biocube yesterday and something is wrong with the pump that came with it. I currently have live rock, sand, a fluval fan, and saltwater in the tank. In the back I have media, a heater, and the pump the tank came with. I was expecting a hum noise from the pump but it is very loud. To the point we have to raise our voices to talk if we’re in the same room as the tank. It sounds like a very loud buzzing noise coming from the pump. I’ve tried moving it in the chamber and playing with the suction cups on the bottom of it and the noise still persists. Any advice on what to do or other pumps to try?

Well I took the plunge a while back and decided to up my game to a significantly larger tank then my 10g nano. The new tank is a 90g with a 40g sump. It’s been a process as it was cut custom built from the ground up but thought I would post a few pics as it finally ready for sand, rock and water.

Setting up a new 12g loooong tank. This is my dream nano and now that we are in a new house and staying for 10+ years I am getting everything set up! I drilled the overflow today and no cracks! Very little edge chipping so that was a big win 😊 still need to drill for the returns though. I plan on running one pump to two returns. Due to sump size I don't want to run two pumps. Hey there fellow reefers! Don't judge me if I'm not doing this right as this is my first post ever on these forums cuz I don't know what else to do, or where to go to ask with the whole COVID everywhere is closed and a giant hassle. Anyways... My 90G tank has been running for 8 months now it's been cycled I've seeded it with copepods. I currently have 4 snails just cruising around cleaning the walls. There is 80lbs of CaribiSea agraalive sand and one lone rock. In the display I have a sump with filter sock and right after my bubble catcher in my return pump section (I know it's quite small cuz I have an external pump running not my doing came with the set up and was to anxious to wait till I had a new sumo to run it) so I just fires it up. It's done cycling. I'm not to new at reefing I have a 1.5 yr 60 gallon up stairs doing great fish and all but it's running a canister filter so the whole sumo thing is new to me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Well, this is awkward. Long story short, my other DIY journal started to get a little cluttered with the beginnings of this build and I realized that it was quickly turning into just a regular build journal, so I figured as a last ditch effort to save a sinking ship I'd make THIS journal about the happenings of my other journal to keep that journal from becoming this journal that I now made. You follow? Either way I'm excited to get to work on this small build. I just finished building the stand (small bookshelf), but still need to aquire some other parts. Adding Overflow and Basement Sump a Nuvo Fusion 40 AIO for a Basement Sump

I have a crazy idea. I've searched but haven't found anything specific. I was slowly getting the parts for a frag system in my basement, but suddenly decided I don't want double the maintenance. Listed everything for sale locally, and someone had the idea to plumb it all to my 40g display tank. So I have been thinking about it, and have a rough idea of how it may work. I want to make sure though, as it will involve emptying the rear of the AIO, and drilling for a bulkhead. So the basic idea is to keep the rear chambers and essentially turn that into a huge overflow box/pre-filter. Only floss in the first two chambers. I would drill glass of the center return section for a 1.25" bulkhead, just below the baffles. I would take an Eshopps Eclipse M overflow, pictured below, and use only the external part, allowing me to drain into the basement. For the return, I'd have a strong pump for 20ft of head height, t'd off for the frag return, and then upstairs, over the back and use reduce with a y to use the current 1/2" locline. Will this work?!?! -
Trying to clear up some space in the garage. I am in the Orlando area, local pickup only, PM for details.5 large red mangroves: the oldest is over 2 years old and the other 4 are around 1.5 years old. Two of the mangroves have branches. They are in mud that is watered with fresh water. Asking 100$ OBO for all five of them.2 Eshopps Acrylic sumps: One never used and the other was used for only a couple of months. They measure 36" by 14" by 16" (L x W x H) and there is about 21" of space for skimmers and reactors etc. 50$ eachSkimz SM 251 Monzter: it is about 5-6 years old but used only for 1 year. There was a chip in the white collar of the skimmer but it was repaired with acrylic bond. Pumps work great and skimmer is clean. 60$

Currently in my 125g sump I have a Aqueon Nano LED light on it that is on pretty much 24/7. I'm wondering if the different algae i have building up in the sump is a good thing?. I have pink, green, red and orange algae growing all within the sump and its chambers. Should I turn the light off to let it die off or keep it as a added filtration method( biological )?

HELP! Return Pump Section of Sump Keeps Getting Too Low on Water

I have a 90 gallon FOWLR aquarium that I am setting up again (after it being stored for the past 8 years). No fish yet since I'm setting up and cycling my tank. The first time around a professional set it up and it worked great. This time, I set it up on my own with a Triton Refugium Sump. It all seemed to be working well for the first couple of weeks. Now, I'll wake up to air spitting out into the tank because the return pump section is low on water. I have added water each time this happens and it fixes it for a day. I don't want to add too much water and end up flooding m house at some point. Does anyone have experience with this and/or can tell me how to fix this problem? -
Hello everyone, Was hoping everyone could provide me with some tips and suggestions on a new 10 gallon build I want to do. Right now here is my plan: Tank: UNS 60S shallow aquarium (24x14x7) Light: Kessil A80 Rock: Stax and marco rock Heres where I need help. I’m stuck between filtration options. I would like to build a sump, but have never owned a tank with one, and don’t even know where to begin with overflows/drilling/plumbing let alone building the sump itself. Other things I am considering is using a canister filter and cleaning it often, or just an AC. I just love the clean look of this tank, and would like to be able to keep the filtration, heater and ato out of the view area if possible. Would like to keep the tank as close to looking “empty” looking as possible. I also would like a solution that won’t kill my wallet, however I know this hobby and am expecting it to at least get a beating. My stocking plan: bit of LPS/Softies 1 fish (either Azure Damsel OR a pygmy angel) 1 blood red fire shrimp I am attaching a picture of what the tank looks like, and the second picture is the aqua scape I want to follow. I basically want a shallow lagoon look, with lots of open sand areas. Essentially what I am asking is what would you guys do with this tank? How would you filter it? Any suggestions will be appreciated and the more detailed the better! thanks in advance!!

Making my own version of a 'TMC habitat' nano marine tank

In April I set up an180 gallon marine tank(6x2x2) I love it and it is doing very well. However, in an effort to keep my 'tinkering' hands out of the tank, I finally persuaded my wife to let me buy some glass, wood and acrylic and build my own 50l display tank with a 25l sump and 7.5 l top off tank. It's been fun, fun, fun.... time to start a build thread. I'm aiming for a 'mini cycle' at worst. (there is nothing brown and hairy growing in the sump that's a reflection of the living room rug!) as I am seeding the tank with some siporax, a little sand, live rock and some sponge media from the180. I thought about purchasing TMC habitat 50 tank... they look so good! Then I thought to hell with spending almost £600 pounds on that... I would make my own 'version' for less than half that amount.... wish me luck! The tank including equipment should cost me less than £300. I'm really looking forward to receiving feedback on my plans for this mixed reef and its progress! I was thinking about adding it to my refugium section. I built a tray to hold some substrate in my fuge and am looking for suggestions on what to fill it with. I'm also gonna go bare bottom with this tank and hopefully grow some montis, zoas, and other encrusting corals all over the starboard at the bottom. I have a lot of montis at the top of the scape in my 20 gallon and I dont want to repeat that mistake. They are fast growers and shade out large sections of the tank. I am currently working on the plumbing which has given me a lot of appreciation for all the reefers with those immaculate color coordinated PVC works of art in their stands ( you know who you are). I am on at least the 4th home depot run at this point. Anyways I look forward to getting this tank wet and sharing the progress with everyone!

My fluval evo 13.5g has a three part sump with skimmer,filter media,heater/return pump. Because the nano skimmer only occupies the top half of its section there's a void below which I'm considering filling with live rock rubble to aid biological filtration. However as its pretty much the first section the incoming water hits i'm worried it will be a dirt trap, which won't get washed as filter media would. Will this cause more problems than its worth? Be glad of any opinions 🙂

Hello all! First post here on NR 🙂 Was just hoping for any input/advice/experience regarding the IceCap K2 50 skimmer. I'm starting up an ADA 60f (around 8 gal) along with a custom sump (another 10 gal) and want to get a decent skimmer. Will be moving most of the equipment from an old tank I have to the 60f. Everything about this tank: Stocking: 1 x Frostbite clown, 1 x Nearly Naked clown (idek if this is right) - These guys have been in a 7gal cube now for more than a year, so just changing tanks because I love the shallow ADA Pump: Sicce Syncra 1.5 Overflow: Glass Holes Super Nano Con Dientes Return: Glass Holes 0.5" Return Plumbing: in the process of getting some colored PVC 🙂 🙂 🙂 Wavemaker: Sicce Voyager 270GPH Light: AI Prime HD I also attached a picture of the current tank the nemos are in. Light is from amazon and am just using an eheim canister filter. I've read up on some other threads and it seems to me that people generally like the icecap. With that said, I'm super open to considering other skimmers. What I've also considered are: BM NAC 3.5 Reef Octopus BH-50 However, I'm afraid that if the skimmer is TOO overkill for a tank my size, then the collection might be poor? Hi all, I'm pretty new to reefing--have had a 14g biocube for a year or so. Decided to make a small 7 gallon sump and it's running great! Of course as soon as I did that I fell into a used 55 gallon aquarium with a pro clear sump. Good news is I have room for the new aquarium right to next to the biocube. Neither my DIY 7 gallon sump nor the pro clear will be big enough to run a combined ~95 gallon system.How can I connect the two systems? Each will be on its own stand and I don't think drilling my DIY 7 gallon sump is an option--I would have to tear it down and start over and then have pipes going through the two stands. Any ideas?
