HELP! Return Pump Section of Sump Keeps Getting Too Low on Water
CSKirk posted a topic in Equipment Forum
I have a 90 gallon FOWLR aquarium that I am setting up again (after it being stored for the past 8 years). No fish yet since I'm setting up and cycling my tank. The first time around a professional set it up and it worked great. This time, I set it up on my own with a Triton Refugium Sump. It all seemed to be working well for the first couple of weeks. Now, I'll wake up to air spitting out into the tank because the return pump section is low on water. I have added water each time this happens and it fixes it for a day. I don't want to add too much water and end up flooding m house at some point. Does anyone have experience with this and/or can tell me how to fix this problem? -
So the pump that was shipped out with my Cube10 didn't fit (zzz). And was looking at picking up either an eheim compactON 300 or 600. Specs of the pumps are as follows: Eheim compactON 300 Pump power per hour at 50 Hz of 170L (45g) Pump power per hour at 50 Hz to 300L (79g) Eheim compactON 600 Pump power per hour at 50 Hz of 250L (66g) Pump power per hour at 50 Hz to 600L (158g) The main differences I can think of is the bigger pump would draw more water through chemical/biological filtration, whereas the smaller would allow more random flow from a wave maker. So is more water through the chemical/mechanical filtration worth having slightly less random flow within the tank? Or is it just preference.

(From our Internet Reefer's Decoder Ring series: “AC and DC Pumps” – Internet Reefer’s Decoder Ring) They’re not as different as you might think! Reef aquarium caretakers tend to obsess over flow. We use pumps to pull water through our sumps. We put in powerheads and wavemakers all in an effort to push water around. We use pumps with aerators to run skimmers. Even though we have many […] Continue Reading

Hey everyone I currently have the stock pump that comes with the nuvo fusion 10 all in one tank... and let me tell you it's loud as hell. What a good affordable return pump that stays relatively quit and wont fail on me later on?

I'm setting up an Innovative Marine 20G (not the fusion). I'm going to run it with a 10G sump. Would a Sicce Syncra 1.5 be overkill, with about 220GPH at a 3ft head? I'm factoring in some loss at the two elbows for the dual return outlets into the tank, so I'm guessing each outlet into the tank would pass about 110 GPH. Does this setup sound reasonable? I'm also planning on running a small powerhead inside the tank, for battery backup and additional flow. Thanks in advance.

Hello! I am getting very close to getting my 20g xh setup and running. Currently finishing up the sump as we decided to make one from scratch using acrylic, the 10g sump we originally had made out of a glass tank doesn't fit the stand I opted to go with. I am currently looking for suggestions on good brands of DC pumps for my return. Can anyone suggest reputable DC pumps for a 20g? I'm unfamiliar with the better models for nano tanks as we have a 150g as our main display and mostly have been working with the larger output equipment. EDIT: So far I've been looking at the Cobalt MJ600 or the Eheim Compact Pump 600. Questions on brand recommendations, appropriate GPH recommendations (pump will need to reach 4ft up the backside for the return form the sump), and obviously quiet functioning. Thanks in advance!
