    SaltyTank's 40G Mixed Reef

Hello & welcome to my new reef journal! I’m a SoCal nano-reef enthusiast that’s been in the hobby 4 years, and I’m finally committing myself to starting this journal – mostly for my benefit, not yours😊 No seriously though, I need help holding my bad habits in check and hoping you will all help me achieve my goal. My goal is that 1 year from now my 40-gallon mixed-reef tank will be a living masterpiece, and so appealing to me that I will have no impulses to stick my hands in the water to move/add anything. That said, here’s some more background and visionary objectives: SETUP: Tank: 40-Gallon Innovative Marine Nuvo Fusion (24” x 20” x 19”) Lighting: Radion XR15w Gen-4 Circulation: (1) IM stock return pump w/2 spin stream nozzles; and (2) Icecap 1k Gyre Heater: None (controlled room temp) Cooling: Desktop fan controlled by Inkbird thermostat/temp controller Mechanical Filtration: (1) Aquamaxx HOB 1.5 skimmer; (2) filter floss Bio Filtration: (1) RealReef dry rock; (2) Caribsea sand; (3) CerMedia Marinepure biofilter balls Chemi Filtration: RedSea carbon Top Off: Tunze Osmolator 3155 Dosing: manually, Brightwell Reef Code A + B & magnesium BACKGROUND: I’m a middle aged father whom loves to drink red wine while staring up-close at my fish tank excessively. I grew up by the ocean and first fell in love with tropical fish & corals when I got scuba certified in Indonesia circa 2000. Since then I’ve done many dives around the world and find myself more interested in biodiverse macro reef-scapes than shipwrecks and cageless bull shark feedings. Also, I’m a photo enthusiast and art aficionado, which I aim to incorporate into my reef keeping. My wife gifted me my first tank about 4 years ago (a 6-gallon JBJ AOI), and pretty sure it’s her biggest regret of our long-standing relationship. I'm now about 1 year into the current setup. VISION: If I were shrunk down to be a little 2 inch scuba diver and my wife threw me into my tank, I want to be surrounded by colors, contrasts, textures, movement, and dimension. I’ll want to swim down, up, around, through, under, and over copious amounts of corals, and be accompanied by a few fish friends that will join me without fearing they’ll bully or eat me. OBJECTIVES: Over the next 12 months, I’ll try to post progress updates every 1-2 weeks. Additionally, I’ll try to engage you all into helping me fill in the holes with new coral suggestions. Since I like to go to the local LFS’s frequently, maybe together we can make this an interactive team effort - although, let me try not to get ahead of myself here. So for now I’ll share some relevant pics and focus on following through with a 2nd post sometime soon. P.S. I have a lot of bad habits to work on... - hands in the tank frequently - impatiently making changes, expecting expedited results - providing poor instructions for friends to care for tank while on vacation - overfeeding and then underfeeding - vindictively taking vengeance on hungry hermits that snatch food from feeding acans

    Minimalist Cube Build

Hey everyone! My name is Matt, I live in beautiful Charleston, SC. This is my third build and the largest tank I’ve owned to date. I’ve been a fan of this forum since I started in this hobby in 2015 and felt like it was the best place to document my new build! So here we go. Picked up a rimless 50g SCA in August from a friend who was upsizing and finally got it up and running on 8/25/18. Wanted to go for a minimalist scape with some decent negative space for the corals to eventually grow into. I plan on doing a mixed reef with a decent amount of SPS and since I’m totally mesmerized by movement I’ll be loading up on Euphyllia. I feel like torches and hammers bring drama to an aquascape but also really like the contrast of encrusting corals like cyphastra and of course the colorful Acros branching all over.. With any luck and probably a ton of help from the NR community I’m hoping to make that vision a reality. Stats: Tank: SCA rimless 50g Starfire Glass Light: EcoTech XR-15W G4 Pro Skimmer: Reef Octopus 110S Liverock: BRS Reef Saver Sand: Caribsea Fiji Pink Salt: Brightwell NeoMarine ATO: IceCap Doser: Jebao iPhone photos don’t really show as much depth from the front as there is in person but you get the idea. Main Scape With the Fiji Pink (really dirty glass) Top down View from the couch 😁 Thats it for now, I plan to start updating this thread weekly. Cheers! Matt
  6. In the last 4 years, my 20g tank has logged more than 2,000 miles in 5 different moves, has visited 8 different states, and two of those moves were half way across the country. Needless to say, this has taken quite a toll on the tank. It's been up and running in some state for some eight years now, and finally has a permanent home now that we've bought a house. With any luck, things will flourish, uninterrupted. SPS have been back in the tank a few months now and am hoping I won't have to sell them off and move again like I usually have to do! Equipment: Tank: Standard Petco $20 20g Tall - 24x12x16. Lighting: Radion XR30 Pro (G1) with upgraded wide-angle lenses @ 45% Flow: 1x MP10 and return pump @ 100% in Yellow Mode Sump: DIY 10g Standard Petco $10 10g - 20x10x12 with 2 chambers Skimmer: Bubble Magus C3.5 ATO: Avast Marine with Aqualifter Temperature: Ranco 111000 connected to old titanium heater Overflow: HOB CPR CS50 with Aqualifter siphone and DIY float valve relay on return to prevent accidents Dosing: 1/4 - 1/3 gallon of 27.5% saturated Kalk in RODI per day. Keeps Alk between 8.4 and 9.2 over the course of about 20 days. Live Stock: Fish: 2x Percula Clowns and one Hoeven's/Melanurus Wrasse Coral: Acros, Montis, Acans, Favia, Stylo, Birdsnest, Merulina, Blastos, Chalice, Platygyra, Ricordea, Zoas, Palys Nems: Two RBTAs (mother and baby), 2x Mini-Maxis Everything has been set up for ease of maintenance and being able to run for a week if I'm travelling since the amount of time I have to dedicate to my reef comes and goes - after 8 years, I just want it to be as simple as I can get - no more experimenting with gadgets or fads, just simple, basic husbandry. It seems the only time I am working on my reef these days between work, climbing when it's warm and snowboarding when it's cold is when the weather is crappy and I'm stuck inside. FTS on 11/22/19: FTS on 6/20/19: FTS on 2/19/19: Here's a FTS from where I am starting from, again, in it's beat-down glory 10/4/18: All things considered, it's looking pretty decent having spent more than 2 weeks of it's life packed up just like this: While the tank is starting to really look good inside, it's not looking so good from the outside: This is where everything began - many, many years ago. All but two pieces of rock in my tank now started here:

  9. Hey all, question regarding coloration/“pop” improvement with Ecotech Radion upgrade options.I’ve been running a G1 Radion for something like 6 years over my 34 gallon Solana. I’m pretty satisfied with output, and the spread is acceptable, corals grow fine, so no real “problems.” But I’ve never loved the coloration it gives my tanks, compared to what I’ve seen on other tanks with different LED’s or newer Radions. So I’m considering an upgrade. Obviously the most affordable option is to send in the one I already own for Ecotech to upgrade to the G3. And of course since I’m thinking about it, I’ve also been checking out the G4 and G4 pro. I don’t need the G4pro for the increased output, but I do like the idea of more color channels. What I want to know is: is it worth the upgrade (any of them) in terms of visual appeal and making colors pop? Will I see a noticeable difference from G1 to G3? Is G4 way better than G3 (aesthetically)? Has anyone made any of these leaps and can talk to how the corals appear under the improved spectrum? Will the G3 upgrade be enough to see that new “pop”? Is the G4Pro way better than the regular G4 in terms of color/“pop”?I’d love some first-hand experiences with this. Thanks!
  10. Started this tank on March 30, 2017 with stock pump and filter sock, koralia nano from previous tank, and 5 lb of LR, and about 8.5 gallons of saltwater to start. The tank is almost a year old now and some upgrades have happened. Let me know if you have any thoughts on the tank! Plan on upgrading to a Lagoon 25 at some point this year I hope!
  11. Well I got the bug again. I’ve been browsing Craigslist for the last year or so looking for that perfect little nano reef with good equipment and some nice coral when I found this fluval AIO 25gal. It came with a Radion xr15 pro gen 3, tunze nano ATO, Tunze skimmer 9004 and some cheapo flow pumps which I promptly replaced with a Vortech mp10.   I picked the tank up about 9 months ago with the naive plan to keep it simple not get crazy with the SPS like my last tank. This lasted about a month or two and I slowly started adding some easier Montipora and a birds nest. Then I added a GHL SA doser 2.1 dosing pump and another flow pump and a couple Acropora. Then I came across a used JBJ 45 Rimless which I decided I had to have. I built a stand out of reclaimed cypress from an old New Orleans house that got demolished. The tank sits down in my basement office and helps to brighten a dark corner. My next project will be to remove the false wall and drill the back to accept an overflow so I can convert this from an AIO to a conventional reef with a sump and larger skimmer.  Thanks for looking!  This is how it looks now  My newest addition. Not sure if it has a name I believe itÂ’s a maricultured Acropora not sure what variety though. IÂ’m hoping it keeps coloring up with those blue and purple highlights.  My last reef was a 150gal AGE 60x30x20 Â

  13. See blue arrows for screws to remove. This is a gen 1 or 2 pro with gen 3 upgrade, your radion may very. Do not do this tear down with out an antistatic mat, if you're clumsy, and IF you're still in warranty send it back to Ecotech. Also if you're fan is Hella loud or if your unit is running hot take the time to use a stiff bristle brush and clean out the dust/salt creep.

    XR 15 Pro Gen 3

I have a Gen 3 XR15 Pro with wide and Narrow lenses and RMS mount. I really like this light but I fell in love with the NanoBox lights a while back and have decided that's the route I want to go . This light is in great condition. It has one small corner piece on the undercover that chipped off. I taped it on for a temp fix but it can be glued. Either way you cant tell hardly at all unless you look for it. Asking $360 shipped or trade for a Nanobox Duo Plus M
  15. I started out with 3 XR15’s over my new waterbox 135.4, but now that the aquatic life hybrids are out I am adding 4 t5’s to the mix and really don’t need the power of 3 xr15’s so I am selling 1. They are less than 2 months old and purchased from premium Aquatics. The RMS was only used for a couple weeks when I had my livestock in an IM Nuvo while this tank was being setup. $400 shipped and PayPal’d Separate $335 for XR15, $70 for RMS

    Reefer 170 October update

Hello from cider making country sunny Gloucester in the UK, I've been lurking on a few forums for awhile and watched from a far and after 2 years after getting a reefer 170 and moving serveral times I thought it's time to finally get it up and running and see if I can keep it going long enough to get it looking as good some the tanks on the forum. I've only been in the hobby 2 years so class myself as a "newbie" so any help/suggestions with the tank would be great my wish for this reefer 170 is to be mostly SPS with a few LPS for flow and movement, looking at a monti dominated tank with chalices growing on bare bottom and maybe a hammer coral here and there. Jbj 30 assistance

So I recently expanded my im10 to a jbj30 through and outstanding lfs deal. For now I moved my nanobox tide over to it and replaced the glass top with a screen. With lps and softies should I be concerned with enough lighting? I am looking at some playing montis in the future as well. If I do need to upgrade I am torn between a nanobox duo (love the nanobox) or a used x30r gen 3. Help!

I had originally bought two of the XR15's a few years ago for a 90g tank build but ended up getting a 45g frameless for a good price and so decided to go that route. Any questions let me know. Shipping is $8 via USPS Priority mail. Asking $350... Will accept reasonable offers. Any questions just ask!

    Nanobox or Ecotech Radion

Hello NR! I'm considering buying a new LED Fixture for my 22g long tank. I already have a mini tide from my old tank, which I really like the way the light looks. Some details about my tank: 6 Months old, I have no fish, doing bi-weekly water changes (red sea pro salt), bi-weekly reef energy A&B, reef roids once a week. However here are some things I dislike about the fixture: I found little growth using the fixture after a year with my old tank. I've also done some par tests, and found the par to be pretty low with the settings blasted at high intensity. With only 12 inches deep - was getting only 80 par right under the fixture. Since my tank is primarily SPS, I was curious about the ecotech Radion 30 pro. I feel like the spread / par difference would be a vast improvement over the nanobox, however I feel like the nanobox light rendition looks somewhat better to me. The nanobox definitely has a discoball effect, but I've never had another LED fixture to compare it against - as I'm sure other fixtures might be worse. However, youtube videos of the Radion show the light as too much "white" and "bright look" Before anyone starts, I know there could be many reasons why my corals don't grow quickly, however - if we just factor in the LEDs for this conversation - which is the better fixture. So the question is this: Nanobox quad / duo, or Ecotech Radion xr30w Pro. What will be better for a smaller tank? Anyone had both? Which one did you like better for SPS? As well as the actual "look" of the tank. Current Set-up. https://youtu.be/X180cCvRcTA
