HOB refugiums are difficult to find in Europe; I'm excluding DYI since I'm a beginner. My options are a HOB refugium rated for 40G tanks or one rated for a 60G tanks Would either help me have my 16G (no sump) crawling with copepods? That's the goal. Thanks a lot. I know oversized refugiums have been discussed, sorry for the hundredth post on the topic, but I couldn't find anyone discussing the benefits/negative impact on the copepod population (if there are any). What are the cons? I read cheatos may die in an oversized refugium, releasing nutrients.

Total newbie here, a ridiculous question about a ridiculously large skimmer for my new tank. I'm setting up my first reef tank: 16 G (60 L) tank and I was looking for a protein skimmer, possibly one that could also work in a larger tank in the future. The Hydor Slim skin skimmer is a good candidate but comes in two sizes. A smaller one (30 cm - 12 inch long) for tanks 15 to 35 gallons A larger one (45 cm - 17.5 inch long) for tanks 45 to 65 gallons My Dennerle NanoCube Marinus 60L tank is 43 cm (17 inch) tall. The larger skimmer would stand 37 cm (14.5 inches) into the water, while the upper part of its length, 8 cm (3 inches), would extend above the water level. [With a 3 cm (1.1 inch) sandbed and water 3 cm (1.1 inch) from the tank rim] Assuming obviously that water would reach into the larger skimmer, would the larger skimmer work? I fully realise this would be far from aesthetically pleasing. Is the larger skimmer just way too oversized for it to be beneficial to such a small (16 G) tank? Would it be a problem if the bottom of the skimmer touched the sandbed?

Hey everyone! I have decided to re-enter the nano world once again after just tearing down my 90 gallon display, 55 gallon refugium, and 25 gallon sump (only ever had about 15 gallons of actual water in the sump). My 15" (diameter) ritteri anemone climbed into the overflow and died while I was on vacation, crashing the tank. So I am starting something that will be less of a head ache and more manageable. Especially because I may be moving in the next 12-24 months. I have some left over parts from my last reef tank, such as my skimmer, the Vertex IN-180. Which was rated by Vertex for up to 180 gallons, I found it kept up quite well with my 160 gallons of total water capacity. I don't think I would have used this skimmer on anything larger than 160 gallons though, especially if heavily stocked. How many of you think it will be okay to run this skimmer on my next nano build? I am planning on building a 42" x 14" x 14" custom acrylic tank that should be right around 35 gallons. I will be reusing the sump from my last set-up, which should yield me around 50 gallons of total system water capacity. Will this skimmer be too much for 50 gallons, will I have troubles building skimmate? Second question, will an MP40wQD be overkill for this tank? The only reason I ask is because the acrylic will have to be 3/4" thick in order to be rimless. Anyways, it is great to be back in the Nano-Reef community!
