    Am I doing this right?

Hi everyone new to the hobby been in it almost 2 months now. SUper excited and im obsessedddddd. Recently got a bunch of coral over the span of 2 weeks and everything is doing AWESOME. But I have a couple questions... Salt hovers around... 1.025-1.026 Water temperature hovers around... 78/79 usually 79.2 to be exact. Lights... Radeon XR15W Pro Gen 4 running the Coral Lab template SPS PHX 14 with greens and reds at 5% from 9AM to 6PM Corals I have are.. Trumpet Coral Favia Acan Ricordea Zoas Blastomussa Kenya Tree Discoma mushroom Alveopora And some type of encrusting coral Im currently spot feeding all my corals every Wednesday/Sunday with all pumps off. Their diet consist of.. A half a tablespoon reef-roids mixed with gut loaded bring shrimp, I squish it just enough for the coral to eat. (Spot fed using 11ML syringe) 5ML of Aquavitro Fuel Red Sea Reef Energy A/B 2.5ML (Just started it today) Poseidon Fury (3,000) OceanMagik Live Phytoplankton (4 species) Nano Brine Live Baby Artemia (500) Not sure what else im missing... Edit: I have a Nuvo 40G, I added refugium into one of my chambers with Cheato, and live rock. Hopefully the Copapods do the dirty in there and replicate! Edit:: Refugium has been going for 2 weeks. Today I added the Copapods. (Cheato is growing)

    AquaOne Nano 40 Stocking???

So, Recently my 6 line wrasse unfortunately died thanks to a spike in my nitrates... This has all been sorted now and many more precautions have been taken to ensure that this is not something that is likely to happen again at all. However, I now have no idea on what I actually want to stock this tank with? I am not a new hobbyist, and I have been keeping marine fish for about 4 years now, with many different tanks.. So I am rather stumped on what to add to this tank... So far I have some Xenia, Hammers, Duncans, A Featherduster & some leathers (Kenya Trees & Toadstools). I am looking to add quite a bit more coral wise to make the tank look like a little reef. But don't know what fish to add! Any advice or comments are appreciated.

Is my Hammer Coral healthy and happy?

Hey! l have had an ORA Wall Pink Hammer Coral for a couple weeks now and I have had it in two locations: on top of rock work with more flow and now I have the hammer on the bottom of tank with low flow. l am new to reefing in general and do not know how to tell if my coral is happy and healthy, since every coral is different. Some of the smaller tentacles on my hammer have small curls in them and l am just concerned. Also, the hammer coral’s tenticles look spread out instead of compact like other hammer’s l have seen. Please give me some feedback. The hammer comes out everyday and never stays retracted, which makes me feel he is just fine! l will be upgrading to a Kessil 160w light eventually. Thanks!! For my tank details: - 20 gallon - Dual Marineland biowheel filter - 500 GPH power head - Clownfish, damsel, chromi fish - Frogspawn and Zoa Coral - Live sand - 2 Marineland LED Lights Tank was established and cycled until levels were at zero before adding anything. Cycling took 21 days before anything was added. l cycled with the product Stability and my water is tested every day. Water temp is kept at 74 with salinity of .022. The tank has been up for almost two months now.
  6. Hey guys im new to salt water tanks, and didnt want to go straight in to having a massive tank, plus i like the concept of smaller reef tanks. I come here today in hopes of finding more knowledge on starting and maintaining my tank. Earlier today I purchased an aqueon 100w heater as well as the aqueon 500 pump. I was wondering what a good 10 gallon tank would be as well as a good light and some filters. Also im curious.. are supplements needed in a tank? I plan on having a few corals, and later an anemone. Again i'm VERY new to saltwater tanks in general and i love the challenge. Thanks in advance!

    Fast Rock ?

I am starting out my first nano "reef" and want to know what type of rock would be ideal for a quicker setup. Obviously the tank still needs to cycle; however, I would like a rock that will not need to be cured for a long time. I don't plan on putting coral into the tank initially, FOWLR to begin. Having the rock be dry would be fine by me. The options I have seen are the following: Reef saver rock from BRS, Life rock from CaribSea, and Walt Smith Pukani Live Rock - Cured / Cleaned from Premium aquatics. I also was looking at basic caribsea base rock as an option. I just want to be able to set up the tank as fast and hassle free as possible. With the live sand helping a lot in getting bacteria to begin in the tank. I also will use bio spira to help kickstart the tank as well. So far I will be setting it up in a 20 gallon hex tank. Using ocean direct live sand, a hob filter I have laying around (rated for 40g), and some cheap pumps. I plan on stocking with: 2 clowns, a clown goby, and a firefish (and some snails and hermits)
  8. Recently, my parents took a long talk and finally let me get a fish (I couldn't get any other pet due to my cat). We've come to realize my cat doesn't care so, I have been saving up money and I want another fish. I was interested in a "cow" clown fish or a black moor goldfish, but as I did my research they both require lots of space and I don't wanna take in one if I don't have the proper housing area for it (that would be cruel). I was wondering if there are any other fish that I could take care of besides the betta I have at the moment? (Anything that can be held in a 5-10g tank, im fine if they need any chemicals, also fine if they need a heater, filter, etc.)

    Questions about tank

Hello! I am new and I have a few questions about my new tank. It's an imagitarium 6.2 gallon aquarium. Right now it has live sand, water, and 2 small pieces of live rock. I ordered a heater off of Amazon and it will arrive on Friday. It has a weak pump and I'm wondering what pump would be good for such a small tank? What light should I buy if I decide to buy coral? What are some good tips or tricks for it? Can I put the heater in the filtration compartment? Thank you!

IM fusion 10 new set up

Okay so this is our new IM fusion 10 set up that’s been running for about 5 weeks now. What do you all think? WeÂ’ve been in the hobby for awhile however this is our first nano tank. We would like some tips and pointers on powerheads, and filter media. We havenÂ’t put all of the gadgets to use yet as the tank is cycling.  currently,  fusion 10 tank AI hydra prime light with flex arm upgraded media caddy ghost desktop skimmer spin stream nozzle upgrade 7lbs of live bahama oolite sand 5lbs of live rock and a 3 lb dry rock     current readings for cycle ph 8.15 ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 10mg/dl  im noticing this sand likes to blow around easily, wondering if we should take some out or add some coarser sand to the sand bed ????        Â

New To the hobby. Need feedback

I got a the fluval spec 3 for Christmas. I set it up on 12/30/17. I just put corals in today 01/18/18 after talking to my local fish store and seeing if it's alright to add them he said yes and help me pick out my coral. I got two zao one brain and a candy cane. I also upgrade my light with the kessil a80. My question are what do you guys think on the placement of my coral. I kept the top piece open to add a coral that moves and wave haven't found one I like yet. Another question how do I know how much to turn my color and intensity on my kessil a80.Â

    Diatom Question

I guess I have some diatom in my tank but have notice air bubbles coming up from my rock for the past couple of days. Could diatoms cause that? I did a 15% water change on Saturday then I noticed the air bubbles all coming up. I do not have a protein skimmer somce my tank is only 13.5 gallons

    Algae?

I noticed today what I believe is diatomes but maybe someone can chime in and confirm. All my levels are good and I use only purified ocean water that I purchase from the store. My tank is still new running for almost 2 months now. What’s the best way to get rid of this and will it harm my clown? I have 4 snails in the tank with him 2 margaritas and 2 Astraea snails. It’s on the sand bed and walls, kind of hard to see it on the sand since it’s black and pictures are hard to take due to the lighting.
  17. Hello, I’m wondering if someone can help identify this thing I noticed in my tank today. I did see this originally on one of my small purple snails and though it was part of the shell but now this thing is on the back wall of the tank. Kind of looks like a pill bug. My other snail has one on it to unless it has also moved.....

    New Clown added

Hello all, I just added a new clown and have notice he swims near the surface when lights go out. Is that normal? I’m new to salt water and have already cycled my tank before adding him and I did acclimate him with the drip method. He was added 2 days ago

    A New Start...

After a number of years without a reef I have decided to start with a nano. For years I had a beautiful 60 gallon reef tank when technology was so new. I went thru a divorce, sold the house(the guy said I will buy the house if the tank is included) and have waited to start again. Am planning at some point to build a large reef. But until I get some things complete on the house my wife is hoping I will wait. So we both decided a reef nano 40 gallon upstairs will be a start. I am evaluating purchasing a plug and play like Red Sea max 170, the coral life 34, a few others or building from scratch. While it is pricey initially I do like the Red Sea. Interested in any thoughts. It can be ordered with a nice dump, and the included skimmer, led's and features seem hard to beat. I plan to start slow, interested in corals and inverts, a few fun small fish. Will really appreciate any advice prior to my initial investment and build/start up. Happy to find the forum and make some new friends who love reef!!

    Myriad Of Questions

Ok, so I'll start from the top here. I've been following the Reefing hobby for a long time now, and was planning on setting up a system for next year at school. I pretty much just wanted to see if i could maintain an easy softie/clownfish/cardinalfish situation, and sell the fish and corals back at the end of my school-year. I was starting to have big cost worries, however, and was approaching the point on giving up on reefing for 2 years (until grad) when someone up above (or down below) sent me a message. This message said: "Free". A 38 gallon tank (36x12x18) with stand (needs spray-paint), an old Marineland C360 cannister filter (with biopellets and bioballs, still covered in algae, inside), a red-sea Prizm (not working, impeller broken), 2 heaters (both working apparently (weird)), and a very cheap powerhead for mixing salt. The tank also came with a bucket of dry-algae covered rock that's actually kind of pleasing to look at, but won't be used (no time to cure rock, and this guy had some real algae problems, clearly). I didn't have a chance to ask about any of this, as it was on a lawn behind a piece of plywood with "free" written on it in day-glo spray paint. It appears to me that I've now got some options. The C360 is not working, and I've been fiddling with it all day. From what I can see, these canisters frequently leak, and i think the root of my problems is a leak coming from the priming button on the top of the unit. I've cleaned everything with vinegar, removed all the bio-balls and pellets from the system, tightened all the tubes- nothing. The system kind of gargles- hums for a few seconds, gargles slowly and then faster, hums, repeat. I suspect that air is being pulled through the primer that leaks water when starting a siphon. Do I care? I understand that the canister solution is a majorly out of style one. That being said, I see myself running it more like a carbon/gfo reactor, with a bit of floss in another tray, and chemi-pure or something like it in another tray. Is this goofy? Keep in mind that I'm on a tight budget. That being said, I want my system to be future proof. and I understand that 40$ to fix something like this now is 40$ on the street in 6 months when I find the cash to drill my tank and get a sump up and running. Any chance that cementing the priming button closer and using something like a turkey-baster to start the system is a worthwhile endeavor? Same question for the Prizm, it seems to me that the impeller for the system is struggling, it spits out tiny bubbles rarely, but seems to sputter and choke often. A new impeller is 25$ or so, am I wasting money here? How considerable is the difference between no skimmer, Prizm, and 100$ skimmer? This tank won't even start cycling for a few more weeks, is it worth holding off and looking for a deal? Is it possible that the Impeller is working and i have no idea how to prime it? (I'm filling the whole assembly about halfway with water and plugging it, seems straightforward to me). What does a failed/failing pump sound like? There's considerable salt creep/green rust on some of the plugs, is this potentially causing some of my problems? Finally, the tank is missing it's middle support, one that's supposed to run the 12inches across the tank at it's center. When full, the tank seems fine, maybe slightly bowed. How big a DIY fix is this? Is it necessary? I have other questions about my cycle and lighting, but I can hold off on these for now.

    First Reef Aquarium

Hi guys! This is my first reef tank, It's a fluval evo 13.5 with the fluval SEA PS2 mini protein skimmer and a hydor koralina 240 pump. My first corals were a mushroom rock, kenya tree, and green palythoas. My tank has been set up for almost 7 months now and since I bought my first corals I have accumulated 14 more types and not my tank is really starting to look like a reef! My favorite corals include the multiple types of zoas i have collected, my red digi, my aussie green leather, and finally my orange galaxea. The tank is stocked with a green chromi, two ocellaris clowns, and a royal gramma basselet, along with the classing cleanup crew of hermit crabs and some snails. I would love to hear your feedback and suggestions! sorry about the poor picture quality, iPhone 6
