  1. The Rainy Day Aquarium

    RDA’s Reef: Vintage to Modern

Every now and then I’ll come across an old aquarium. Sometimes at goodwill or a pawn shop. Sometimes on an online classifieds site. Sometimes at a yard sales in the summer. Most are battered, cracked rims, chipped glass, beaten down with years of use and often neglect. They almost always come with hardened sand or neon gravel still in the tank; the remnant wafts of old aquarium water still held within. The glass is always fogged with hard water stains and you can always spot what was once a reef tank by the crusted salt still around the rim; rusted out cabinet hardware to boot. I’ve always wondered what those tanks looked like in their glory days. Maybe a thriving planted tank? A subpar attempt at a reef? Judging by the plastic plants in some, probably neither of those… Most aquariums you’ll see at these places are just your average box. Rimmed tanks that need to go to make room for something else in a home. If you’re lucky you might even see oak trim on one. But every once in a while you’ll come across something unique. An oddball. Sure it might not be rare, but it’s a spectacle to look at. My local shop was cleaning up from their past week’s Black Friday sales. And it seemed like a lazy day for them. As I perused, I wandered into their back room —they have…a lot of things back there— something caught my eye. A worn out ViaAqua tank sitting on a very salt encrusted stand. For years now I have been looking for a project tank. An older tank that I could refresh and put some new life into. I know I know, every tank is a project. And especially in my case those projects seem to never fully come to fruition . But under the layers of salt, grime, and dog hair, it was something with potential. An arm and a leg later and the store manager was helping me load it into my Subaru truck (hey now, the state title says it’s a truck so that’s what I’m going with). Holding my breath, I feared of passing out from the fumes that lurked from the still wet sand bed. We hoisted it up into the back of my *truck* and went back for the stand. Thinking to myself if there is a chemical on this planet earth that could help me clean the muck off of the tank then maybe, just maybe, I’d get my money's worth out of this beast from the back room. I brushed off the salty, greasy, dog hair caked stand remnants from off my shirt, thanked the owner, and drove home, not realizing that the Mrs. was about to be blindsided with what was coming home with me… All that to say…. Welcome to RDA’s Vintage to Modern Build! The point of all of this is to create a modern looking reef display with a retro feel using some old school style equipment. I have my work cut out for me as there is a lot this tank needs, but in the end it’s just a fun project to work on the weekends to help keep me sane 🤪 THE GOOD: From what I can gather, the tank itself is a ViaAqua LV 680w. Roughly 20” long, 17” wide, and 24” tall, it’s about 24 gallons. The tank seems to be a decent condition, no cracks or chips or anything like that. It came with its original stand, although it has been painted white and is very used, it’s still pretty sturdy. THE UGLY: The back of the tank was drilled, but the holes for the overflow are awkwardly off center. Also the overflow box itself is lathered with so much silicone it makes even my dog feel uncomfortable. The sump is just a plastic tote (classy) that will now act as a trash receptacle for all the sand and crap that will come out of the tank itself. The plumbing is….well….not good. Barbed fittings with rusted out hose clamps adorn the back of the tank. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE: The stand, although sturdy, has seen better days. I’ll be stripping it down. Sanding off the grossness and refinishing it with a higher quality white paint and matching hardware. The tank will be thoroughly cleaned and then will be taken apart and resealed. I’ll be replacing the back glass as the plan is to drill the bottom of the tank for plumbing instead of having the overflow hanging off the back, along with installing a white overflow box. I’ll also be refinishing the trim of the tank in white (you seeing a theme here yet? 😉) That just leaves making a custom hood and a color matched sump. For equipment, I would like to go with a Metal Halide hybrid fixture (probably a 250w Reefbrite with either their LED bars or maybe a pair of AI Blades) other things on the list is a return pump of some sort, wave makers, heater, ATO, etc. I do want to get a Hydros controller to manage everything for this tank. I don’t expect this build to happen overnight, quite the opposite in fact, but I thought it would be fun to take you all along for the ride😁 I’ll also *probably* be make a companion video series for your watching enjoyment. More to come! Equipment: Display: ViaAqua LV 680W Stand: Stock ViaAqua stand Lighting: Reefbrite 150w Metal Halide Sump: Fiji Cube 12 Roller Mat: Klir DI-4 v2 Protein Skimmer: Aquavitro Division 125 Media Reactor: TBD Calcium Reactor: TBD Refugium: Custom Return: AI Axis 90 Flow: 2x AI Nero 3 Heater: 150w Cobalt NeoGlass Controller: TBD Livestock: TBD packed up and ready to go surprise the Mrs. 😅 the smell from this thing is something else 🤢 interesting plumbing 🤔 probably the best sump like, ever dude. again. the smell 😭
  2. INTRODUCTION Jakarta based music producer here, living in one bedroom apartment with my boyfriend. We just created a nano reef in our home as an homage to Indonesia's marine treasure. 3. Hello everyone! Windslab here. A few months ago I happened into an established Waterbox nano that needed a rehoming. I was thrilled with this opportunity as it's been about 5 years since I had to leave the hobby (school, moving etc.) and was looking for an excuse to get my hands wet again (plus, the past two years in healthcare haven't been stressful at all, so I figured now was the perfect opportunity to immerse myself in the critical care of hobbies ;)). Well, enough rambling on that front. When I picked up the tank it consisted of: Livestock- Percula orange clown Wyoming white Trochus snail x1 Red-legged hermit x1 Pale'd out Acan ~ 12 heads Leather Kryptonite Candy Cane ~ 4 heads Short tentacle torch ~ 3 heads Purple & green hammer ~ 2 heads GSP ~ 2 x 2 inches Hardware- NICREW 30w HyperLED Bag of carbon Bag of plastic bioballs (still need to transition to ceramic media...) stock return pump 100w heater Moving day went according to plan. Once home and settled, I made a new aquascape and let things settle out in the sandbed. I made sure to chisel the GSP off the top off the rock to create a nice turf island up front. A made a few changes pretty quickly. Water params were solid when I took it over, but I needed things like a lid, media housing etc. I'll list the breakdown below, but the big difference was adding an AI Prime. I started it on Saxby's at 60% (acclimating from 30%) and have since been increasing about 5% every week or two. I'm planning on dropping the whites as my blues nears peak of ~100%. Trying to find the balance between happy spa and happy lps has been a bit of a trial and error process. Anyways, here's the livestock that I've added (everything I picked up were very small frags. Trying to pack things in while not breaking the bank...) OG Mummy Eyes Chalice Green / Blue Ultra RFA 4x Red legged hermits 2x Trochus snails 3x astrea snails 1x skunk cleaner shrimp Blue hornet zoa Rainbow hornet zoa scrambled eggs zoa playboy bunny zoa sonic flare zoa spitfire zoa goblins on fire zoa Jawbreaker mushroom St. Thomas mushroom green/yellow ricordea Magician's zoa JF Lethal Leptoseries Flaming Phoenix montipora BigR Gumdrop Echinata Aussie Duncan Pink/ purple yuma Forrest Fire Digitata ASD rainbow Phoenix Montipora Poletti's yellow tipped austera Rainbow Acans With all that typed out, here are the hardware changes I've made: AI Prime 16hd Kraken Reef lid inTank surface skimmer inTank media basket (chamber 1) + filter floss (change every other day), carbon + phosguard, bioballs inTank sump cover Aqumai KPS powerhead JBJ Nano AT So far most everything is doing well. Surprisingly the most finicky thing are the magicians zoos. I've tried them in many different spots and they still aren't happy. I'm a bit worried about loosing them. Additionally the austera is up and down. Some days it looks better than others however it still has a ways to bounce back. I test Mg/Ca/Alk/Phos/Nitrates every two days and dose accordingly. My Mg has been a bit lower than I would like so I'm planning on switching to a salt with higher Mg (currently mixing redsea blue bucket). Most recent params as of 3/25 were: Mag- 1280 Calcium- 440 Alkalinity- 8.7dKH Phos- 0.02 Nitrates- 6 Overall I'm happy with the water, but ideally I'd like a nitrate of 3-4 and a Mag of 1320-1350. Over the next months I'm planning on swapping out the KPS for a Nero 3 (if I can ever get my hand on one!). The KPS has been fine, but I haven't been overly impressed. Plus I'd like to run everything through one app, but that's just me being extra. Additionally, I plan to slowly sway the bioballs over to Marinepure gems. I've always preferred ceramic media and honestly should have begun this process right when I got the tank. I would like to add a Tailspot blenny at some point soon as well. If I add more livestock, I will turn the second filter area into a microfuge. Hopefully this will regulate phosphates and keep a nice home for a decent pod population. I plan to update this regularly as I add new inhabitants! I'm still trying to figure out the whole tank LED photography thing, any tips are greatly appreciated! -Windslab

Try #2 at a marine tank

I am currently on the verge of purchasing my first ever saltwater fish, the tank is a Fluval Evo 13.5 and was set up August 8th 2021. The only current inhabitants of the tank are two astrea snails, I originally had three but one died a week ago, I assume it is just the poor survivability of astrea snails and not a problem with my water because I just tested. The other two snails are fine and the third one was inactive on day 1. Nitrate-50+ ppm Nitrite-0 ppm Ammonia-0 ppm pH-8.0-8.1 Salinity 1.025 Temp-76 fahrenheit/24.5 celcius I'm currently in the process of heating up 5 gallons of saltwater to perform a water change. I understand my nitrates are a bit high a 40% water change should correct that. If I do end up getting a fish I will update the post (probably an ocellaris clownfish)
  5. After starting my membership here with a strong showing, and for my own educational purposes and record, I guess I’ll start a journal. Seems like a good place to keep a list of ideas and tips to help me on this journey! Tank: Fluval Evo XII 13.5 gallon started 1/21/2019 Equipment: Fluval spec return pump 132gph Fluval sea mini protein skimmer 5-10gallon Fluval 50W heater In Tank Chamber 1 media basket Current Orbit Marine LED light w bracket arm Current Orbit Eflux Wave pump 660gph (along w their hubs) IM mesh screen Media: Fluval bio rings (bottom level of media basket) Fluval 100gm carbon (bottom level media basket) Fluval clearmax (middle level media basket) IM filter floss (top level media basket) Stock: 14lbs live rock ? Lbs of life sand Black oscellaris clown True percula clown Blue spotted goby watchman Red banded snapping shrimp Scarlet shrimp Trochus snails x4 Dwarf red hermit crabs x 10 Star polyp x 2 (one split into two sections thanks to hermits, so there’s three-ish) Palys x 2: both protopalythoa Hairy mushroom x3 (all on one big rock) Hammer x 1 Zoa x1 Now obviously I didn’t start with all of this at once. We started with three clowns in fact- two percula and the oscellaris, but the two bigger fish kept trying to kill the smaller so I took the small guy back to save him from certain death within a week. Following that, the black was named Jolly Roger and the percula Jack Sparrow. (What can I say- this tank is “supposed” to be owned by my soon to be 9 year old who LOVES POTC, but secretly, it’s mine 😁) We started with two trochus and five hermits, but I doubled that for more cleaning power after about two and a half weeks. Those guys don’t get names. We added the goby and his “pal” Jan 22, but they NEVER hang with each other and in fact I’m not sure they know the other exists anymore. The goby was named J Edgar Hoover because he is always watching us with disapproval from across the room and follows us around the tank with his permanent frown. The pistol shrimp was named Snappy because well..... 🤷🏻‍♀️ We added the scarlet shrimp a week ago, and he’s quite the personality. We call him the Red Baron. We started the tank with a zoa and the little star polyp that the herms split in two. We next added the protopalys. Added the hammer today, with some drama due to the LFS lady who evidently thinks I’m out to kill everything in my tank 🤦🏽‍♀️. That’s it for this tank in a nutshell.

    RDA's Shenanigans: A new Garage

Hello all. A lot of my aquarium projects and ambitions have come and gone; regardless of good intention I seem to fall back on not having as much time as I thought to keep things rolling. That, and I'll be honest, my attention span is about as long as-- sorry I got bored. I seem to start and stop journals like a fashion connoisseur changes clothes, so I figured I'd do myself (and all of you) a favor and post all of my aquarium shenanigans all in one place to enjoy. Call it a "gallery" of ideas, diy, and messes if you will. Anyways, I hope to keep you all updated on what I'm up to and different projects I'll be working on in the future. Sorry folks, no gift bags at the door this time (this is a "bring your own food and charm" kind of potluck). As always, thanks for stopping by and hope you enjoy the mess to come, happy reefing.
  7. Hello! Thanks for reading this! I'm a long time hobbyist. I run a YouTube channel called Alasdair Aquatics which follows my fishkeeping journey. I have over 15 years of experience with planted freshwater tanks however my reef experience is limited. I am looking to get back into the saltwater side of the hobby. I have kept 3 reef tanks in the past (all but one were failures and were over run with pests) and am in the process of setting up a new nano reef and taking the plunge once again, I plan to one day setup a larger reef showcasing bubble tip anemone and clownfish symbiosis, I know it has been done many times but this is my future goal👍 My plan is to journal my new nano reef and occasionally start discussions related to nano reef topics I find interesting! Nice to meet you! Alasdair Aquatics - Alasdair McPhail
  8. Well, finally after I had to take my last tank down to move, I'm getting back into the reef game and I am beyond excited! My goal this time around is to make careful, researched decisions rather than just trusting the word of one LFS owner. I had a lot more mistakes that could have been avoided with abit more research. But you live and learn! I got an Evo 13.5 second hand off a local reefer, it's a shame that I pulled the trigger too late for the 365 contest but oh well, I don't need a contest to keep me going with this. Here's the run down: Tank: Evo 13.5 with stock lid while cycling (keep evap down) Lights: Stock while cycling - might see if my old Maxspect Razor 120 W light fixture is still in good shape, it's been in storage for a while though and the lighting tech has advanced alot in 5 years so I might want to look at something new, we'll see though. Return: Stock for now, I want to see how it does/sounds - I'm planning on getting a pair of the VCA random flow generators to replace the stock return nozzles. Filtration: chamber 1 - InTank media basket with just floss on top for now but them chemiclean blue and purigen for the other sections; chamber 2 - TBD, we'll see what I need; chamber 3 - return, heater, ATO ATO: Probably won't need while running the stock lid as I've read evap stays very low but when I ditch the stock lid, I think I'll go with either AutoAqua Smart ATO Micro or the Tunze Nano Osmolator. Tell me, which is your fave? Heater: Hydor 50W Additional flow: I've got an old Hydor Koralia nano 240 from my old build that I can use if I need it Rock: Starting dry this time. I want to see how it goes as I did live rock the first time around and it was COVERED in nuisance algae Sand: CaribSea Ocean Direct Live Salt: Red Sea Coral Pro salt Mix Stocking: a pair of clowns, maybe a lil something else like a green banded goby or a pink streaked wrasse. We'll have to see what is available I think that's all the core things... I'm probably forgetting something! I've leak tested the tank, all good there! Got rid of the black honey comb around the top of the tank, I wanted it clean. Pain to do but worth it in the long run. Now I'm playing with rock scapes while I'm trying to get the right fitting to hook my RoDi unit to my shower (got the wrong one and with isolation, shipping says what I think will be the right fitting won't arrive until mid May at the earliest.... MUST FIND WATER! lol Anyways, here are some pictures of the scape I'm thinking of. Send me your feedback, the good and the bad. This is V2. V1 was scrapped when a local reefer looked at the pics and thought there weren't enough hidey holes.

    Rip Clean

So I am currently in the middle of my second battle with dinos. I have stable levels of detectable nitrates and phosphates so I know my nutrients are not the issue. I tried a UV Sterilizer with no luck, my dinos seem to coat the sandbed and rocks and are not the free floating ones that can be killed with UV. I have also tried dosing bacteria with no affect. I had read a few articles and seen a few videos about raising tank temperature in order to kill dinos so I raised my tank temp to 83. Not only did this not work but it killed my fish. I only had 3 fish in my 32 gallon tank but this was still a devastating blow and had me feeling completely defeated. But after doing some research and getting advice from people on the reef2reef forum, I am going to do a rip clean. I figured this is the perfect time given I have no fish and I can practically start fresh. I actually have an extra bag of the caribsea arag-alive reef sand so I was just going to siphon out the old dino covered sand and replace it. I am also planning on blasting all my rocks with a turkey baster and rinsing them in fresh water, I was also reconsidering rescaping my rocks so this would also be a good time to do that too I guess. So i guess I am just asking if anyone has any experience with this and has any advice before I proceed. Thank you.

🌿9to5 Acro Jungle🌿 New Outboard Motor

Hey there! Recently, I have reduced this hobby to just one tank in light of life changes and an intense schedule working at an observatory. Although never intending to set up another reef tank, this 9 to 5 contest twisted my arm into setting up this small reef tank 🙈 In all respects though, I think this is going to be my endgame reef and plan to have it running until in 30 years I finally get my 220 or get out of the hobby. Like the title says, my goal with this tank is to have it be a "jungle" of SPS corals, or rather, a dedicated SPS system (but only between the hours of 9 to 5... 😉) This tank will be plumbed into a sump and will have a display fuge if everything goes to plan. I still have to tack down a few items that are going to power this tank, but I look forward to creating a neat little tank to help me get through the work day. Join me on this small adventure for many moons to come! Me in the office waiting for things to arrive... 11. Hello everyone, I am new to the reefing hobby and have been running a biocube 32 for a little under a year now. I just finally got passed a long and frustrating battle with dinos. My tank got really bad for a few months and I unfortunately even lost two of my fish and my only frag. So after recently beating dinos and feeling reinvigorated to succeed in the hobby, I want to reconfigure my filtration setup. I am currently only running a reef glass nano skimmer and an intank media basket with filter floss and chemipure blue. I would also like to utilize the intank fuge basket and grow chaeto. I am just worried that the combination of the skimmer, the chemipure and refugium will deplete my nutrients which is how I got dinos in the first place. So does anyone think I can run the 3 successfully, or should I only run 2 and if so what 2. Thank you please let me know with any opinion you have.

    New Fluval Evo 5 tank

This is my new Fluval Evo 5 tank. I'm a first time saltwater tanker as I've only had freshwater in the past. I want to get advice from experienced reefers and others who have used this tank before. I have 3 inhabitants in my tank. My first question is water flow. Is my circulation pump in a good spot? Also please feel free to give feedback/advice on my setup as I like to learn and gain more experience. Thanks in advance community!

    IM 25 Gallon Lagoon

After a few impromptu stops by the local fish store and being out of the reefing world for about eight years, I am jumping back in! I previously had a 46 Gallon Bow Front Reef Tank and it was a great (yet frustrating) learning experience. During the three years that the tank was running, it turned into a flourishing reef that experienced its highs and lows. After heading off to college, maintenance took a turn and it unfortunately died out. Now that I have more time, I've decided to dip my toes back in the water and set up a smaller reef tank. Most of the big purchases have been made, but I am still waiting on the stand to arrive before everything gets set up. Let the wild ride begin, and as always, any comments or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. how much rock

what is the bare minimum of reef saver rock i can use to aquascape a standard 20 gallon aquarium. filteration should not be much of a concern as i have a canester filter packed full of bio media rated for a 70 gallon and will upgrade to a sump very soon, and i have a 1.5 inch sand bed. i was recommended 0.5 kg/ 1 lbs per gallon but can i go much lower than that. its a fish and invert only system and i will not be adding coral as its illegal in my area. thanks!

    Ocean_dreamer89’s BioCube 16

Hello! I recently decided to start my very first saltwater tank. Growing up I had a few freshwater tanks, but they were your “average joe let’s go to PetsMart and get a tank” tank. I grew up on the water and have always had a deep love for the ocean. So much so that I have it tattoo’d on my entire left arm 🤗. Since I’ve never cared for a saltwater mini ecosystem before! I dove into the internet and a few few books to learn as much as I can. It is through that process that I found this site and learned the most. I realized that experience is the best way to learn, but maybe my experience with this can help someone else kickstart their adventure. I ended up going with the BioCube 16 because I love the all in one package and the programmable lights. I would’ve preferred the 32, but weight restrictions with my stand kept me at 16......for now. 😬 Tank:. Biocube 16 gallon Saltwater: Bought from LFS Aquascape: About 5 lbs live rock and 10 lbs dry rock from LFS Sand: 16 lbs Nature’s Ocean Bio-Activ Aragonite Live Sand (about 1 inch deep) Lighting:. Hello, friends! My name is Platon, I am from Russia. (I immediately apologize for my bad English, but I really want to get into your community) On December 25th I launched a small 13 gallon (55 liters) saltwater aquarium. 22. Well, this is awkward. Long story short, my other DIY journal started to get a little cluttered with the beginnings of this build and I realized that it was quickly turning into just a regular build journal, so I figured as a last ditch effort to save a sinking ship I'd make THIS journal about the happenings of my other journal to keep that journal from becoming this journal that I now made. You follow? Equipment: Aquarium: Lifegard Aquatics 6 gallon long Lighting: Lumini Pixie 30 (×4) Heater: TBD Return Pump: TBD Wavemaker: TBD Overflow: DIY Sump: DIY Skimmer: DIY Media Reactor(s): DIY Livestock: TBD FTS____: TBD Obviously their are a LOT of undecided factors here and with this project there are going to probably be a lot of moving parts to work with. Either way I'm excited to get to work on this small build. I just finished building the stand (small bookshelf), but still need to aquire some other parts. In the meantime enjoy these teaser photos 😁
  23. Red sea max office nano (20 gallons) Started februari 6 2020 ~Rock rescape march 10 (old scape broke while remodeling) April 24 Update March 30 2020 Update Hey reefer friends!Due to a reconstructionproject off the house for a bigger kitchen/dining room, and yes ofcourse a bigger tank, I recently sold my reefer 350. After that I changed jobs. With the new job came my own office. To keep my fingers salty and to stay in touch with the hobby, I bought a second-hand red sea max nano to set up as an office tank. Which, to be honest, kinda is a dream come true. The reason I went secondhand is to see if the set up is maintainable in a work-environment. I might upgrade to a 40 gallon later. 24. Hey everyone! I currently have a 2.5 gallon pico reef running, and just recently purchased a Lifegard Aquatics 8.3 gallon AIO aquarium (pictured here on the far left). Based on the size of the back compartment, I'd say the main portion of the aquarium is about 6-7 gallons. Before I add anything, I will be purchasing a glass cover and an LED light. With this in mind, I was wondering what would be some good invertebrates to showcase in this aquarium. I would be willing to do a species only setup, a biotope, or anything else that would be more interesting/unusual than the usual clownfish and cleaner shrimp. I have experience growing macroalgae, soft corals, and LPS, so I would most likely try to incorporate those into the setup as well. Any ideas would be great!

I started off with a Fluval Edge 6 gallon and when the tank is cycled I realized what a pain to do maintenance with a small opening on top and the evaporation was crazy, then I went looking for a larger nano tank and stumbled upon Mr Aqua 12 Gallon long tank from Marine Depot and immediately felt in love with the dimensions that'd fits perfectly on the stand I have, I just have get it. I kept track of the entire process for my record so I'll just post all them pics. I have never done a saltwater tank before, well I did once 15 years ago on a 10 gallon which was a disaster because I never bother to research in advance. This time im going to this right! Let me know what you guys think and if there is anything I can do to improve.
