    Jack's New EXT-50 Lagoon

Well, well, well...it seems like somebody just went out and bought an early 10th birthday present for the 20g tall! 4. A great set-up for a high(er) flow nano. For sale: 1. $80 + shipping. AutoAqua Smart ATO Micro auto top-up system. Comes with everything including original box and instructions except the tubing and the siphon break. Purchased used but never installed as the Biocube 14 cover seems to limit evaporation enough between my weekly water changes so I never bothered to get tubing. Tested this morning and everything works great - sensor, alarm and pump. Basically like new. 2. $80 + shipping. VorTech MP10w EcoSmart. Had in my Biocube 14 for 1 week, to much flow for my Euphyllia even at the lowest setting. Tested this morning and works fine. I will note that the dry side is not silent - being that this is the only my only VorTech experience, I am not sure if that is normal for this model as this is not a quiet drive. ~ Edit: I figure it's no louder than most pumps or cooling fans. I tested it with a couple of decibel monitor apps and it read ~58 dB on low and ~72 dB at max wave crest. From any YouTube videos I can find of MP10w without the QD upgrade this seems normal. ~ Take both for $150 with free US shipping.
  5. I wanted to get your input on upgrading circulation in my biocube 32. It's been set up for ~ 14 months and I have been using stock return pump with ~500 gph coralia powerhead in top left corner pointing up and forward from early on (see pic below). Over time I have been adding a vatiety of sps corals to the top portion of the rocks. They have been growing, but I feel like polyps are being moved too gently by the current. I would like to give them more of a beating. On the other hand I don't want too much flow ripping at the hammer on the bottom left and the brain coral on the sand. So so do you think I should put an icecap 1k gyre along the top horizontally or get an mp10 for the right side of the tank? One thought I have against MP10 is that I like having unobstructed view of the tank from all 3 sides, but obviously can't have it all. Any other ideas? Or should I just leave it alone since the corals seem to be getting by and better is the enemy of good?
  6. Hello everybody, welcome to my new thread. (New Caribbean and Pacific Island theme starts on page 4 on 4/6/18). This aquarium will be the 4th reef that I have set up. For this reef, my goal is to have an organized, beautiful, and stream-lined reef with top of the line equipment. My plan for this reef is to have two separated rock structures. One structure will be primarily used to showcase a variety of Soft Corals, Large Polyp Stony Corals, Clams and Small Polyp Stony Coral from the Pacific Ocean while the other structure will be used to showcase livestock from the Caribbean. That structure will be be home to Gorgonians, Ricordea, and Rock Flower Anemone's. I will attempt to create the conditions that are best for each grouping of coral on each structure. Below is a run down of the equipment I will be running for the setup as well as the inhabitants that live in my reef! Livestock List: Clean Up Crew: Dwarf Cerith Snails, Nerite Snails, and Nassarius Vibex snails Female Yasha Hase Goby Red Banded Pistol Shrimp ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It all started with this box of glass and this box of rocks: I decided to go with some Pukani Dry Live Rock and start out with as sterile of a system as possible. I soaked the rock in a diluted bleach and water solution for 2 weeks to remove any organic materials that might have been left over on the rock. After that I did a muriatic acid dip. I did about a 20 minute dip. I then let the rock cure in a bin in my garage for a few months in fresh water, doing 50% water changes every week or so. If I was going to do this again, I would dip for less time, with a more diluted solution. It is pretty crazy just how much the acid ate away from the rocks. I didn't take any pictures of this process, but to give you an idea of what I mean, here are some aquascapes I was playing around with before doing anything to the rock: And here is the first ever FTS: December 15, 2018 As you can see, the acid really opened up a lot of tiny little pores in the rock but it also ate away a good amount of the rock itself. I'm not saying I wouldn't do that again, but I'd definitely do it differently next time. Anyways, the tank finally got water in it, and got a Dr. Tim's fishless cycle going the first week of December 2018. Here's the Most recent FTS from the other day (sorry for dirty water, I had just finished doing a bit of scraping/cleaning): February 15, 2019 The first additions after the cleanup crew were a Female Yasha Goby and a Red Banded Pistol Shrimp combo I scored from Diver's Den. Here's a pic of the Yasha while she was being drip acclimated: I didn't get any pictures of the shrimp that were worth sharing unfortunately. And once they went into the tank they disappeared for 2 days. I'm happy to say though that today I was able to catch a glimpse of the goby coming out to snag a few Mysis shrimp I fed! She wouldn't let me get close enough to take a good picture without going into hiding, but I managed to snap this one: Well, that's pretty much all I have for now. I'll update with some more info tomorrow as far as future plans are concerned and hopefully some more pictures! I do apologize for the quality of the photos, I have a pretty old phone, and I'm not the best photographer to begin with - but I do promise to get better as I go. I know how much everyone loves pictures, and I'd like to have a nice photo documentary of this tanks progress. Thanks for stopping by! Please feel free to post any questions/comments/concerns. I'm looking forward to being part of the Nano-Reef community!

    Vortech Anemone Guard

Hey, thought I'd share my nem guard I made this morning. It's really simple to make. First, pick up some crochet gridding, and cut the length to the circumference of the powerhead. Then cut it to how much you think you would need to protect the pump from wandering nems. Then you sand the ends of the gridding on both sides to make the glue able to stick to the plastic Glue the rough plastic and bend the other side over to glue it down When you align both sides, put it in a vice/clamp Get some flexible rubber tubing and cut it down one half down the middle with a razor blade Last, cut 3 3/4" segments out and put then on the edge of the grid Here's what it looks like when it's on a pump: Hope this helps some people out so you don't have to worry about a runaway nem or changing a sponge.

    The Snazxy Reef

About Me and This Tank (TLDR at bottom) So a few years ago (about 4) my family and I were getting cichlids for my little brother's bow-front from this little shop that our uncle recommended. Keep note that the closest thing Ive ever seen close to a reef tank was a shark-filled-false-coral tank at Seaworld. As soon as I stepped into those doors I was greeted by a 32 gal Biocube. As fast as a blink of an eye I was hooked, not just by the clownfish playing around in a foot long circumference of a bubbletip anemone, but as to what I noticed as those alien like creatures that I have roughly known as coral from the books in the elementary library (I was a big reader). I was mesmerized by the beauty of a 30 gallon box of water to the point where my parents had to pull me away from the dang thing. Naturally I was pissed and refused to leave the thing. But my parents told me to check something out. I round the corner see a room full of frag tanks, my jaw dropped. That day was the day that I owned my first reef tank. We got a Fluval Spec 5 gal, some live rock, live sand, a small strip light, a clown goby, a firefish, a 6 lined wrasse, and some zoanthids as well as a paly. I had that tank for about three years until we moved and things went down from there, I had my first algae bloom and the tank went out with a boom, everything dead except for a GBG as well as my blue coral banded shrimp (that I still have today lol). I was devastated. Even though I didnt know what I was doing I knew I was on fire, I mean, I had some pretty cool corals as well as a dragonface puffer (that somehow lived about 6 months but sadly died to my firefish -big meany) and on top of that I never did a single waterchange! After that I had nothing but an algae filled tank for about a year. That brings me to where I am now! Last year for my birthday my parents got me a Fluval Evo 13. BIG learning curve. I had constant algae blooms and the seams even busted. But luckily that gave mw a clean slate-- the best of the slates! I started doing hardcore researching on reefing, and I mean hardcore, as In staying up til 3 AM on school nights (still a strait-A student!) watching videos and browsing forms, until I had a rough Idea of how to properly care for the delicate, money draining art forms we call reef tanks. As of today I have my Fluval evo 13.5 that only houses about five corals, sad I know but its hard when the closest LFS from where I live as 45 minutes away (an hour if you count Austin traffic). I have also recently bought an AI Prime HD that I got with lawn mowing money😄! Im still learning but since i've been doing water changes algae is at a minimum, only a few spots. Tommoro I will try to add pictures but thanks if you've made it this far through my story. I look forward to adding pics soon! TLDR; I have been reefing since a young age and I have a Fluval evo 13.5, but srsly this doesn't do my story any justice just read the above lol

    TripleTrouble RedSea170

Hey all. It’s been a while since I’ve posted on the forum and wanted to share some updates on some of the changes I’ve made over the past year. In June, I broke down my Fluval Spec V (pic below) and started up a Red Sea 170. Went with more of a traditional look vs the black sand I had in the Spec and spent a bit too much time on aquascape. Main cause of that was using Staxx Rock and almost had too much optionality in how to create the structure while wanting to keep it natural looking (which I found hard to do). Staxx Rocks CaribSea Arag Alive Red Sea Reef Crystals Kessil A360WE (two, initially then went to a single) SCA skimmer MP10 and 1 Hydor (looking for another MP10) Pic 1 is old Fluval Pic 2 is cycle Pic 3 is what it looks like today Will come back on the thread with some more details but wanted to get this post going.

    MP10 or Tunze 6055?

Would a mp10 or 6055 be better for a nuvo 20 mixed reef?
  18. Started this tank on March 30, 2017 with stock pump and filter sock, koralia nano from previous tank, and 5 lb of LR, and about 8.5 gallons of saltwater to start. The tank is almost a year old now and some upgrades have happened. Let me know if you have any thoughts on the tank! Plan on upgrading to a Lagoon 25 at some point this year I hope!

    My Red Sea Reefer Nano

Hi Everyone, So i have been a long time lurker here and decided to finally start a tread to track the progress of my tank. After purchasing an AIO cube and having it lay in my garage for 8 months still in the packaging, i finally decided to set it up, as soon as i removed it from the box i found the back of the tank was cracked. I took the tank to my local LFS and had them replace the rear panel, but the workmanship was shoddy and after a month at the LFS i collected the repaired tank and returned it to my garage. A few months later a deal to get a discounted Red Sea Reefer came up and i bit the bullet and bought it. So my current setup is as follows : Equipment Tank - Red Sea Reefer Nano - White Return Pump - Sicce 2.0 Pro (Really wanted the Sicce 2.0 Syncra Silent but could not source one locally) Heater - Ehiem Jager 200w (To be replaced with a smaller footprint one.) Wavemaker - Vortech MP10 ES and Vortech MP10 -QD Skimmer - Marine Sources Devil NANO Series 150 (To be replaced by a Bubble Magus Curve 5) Light - Kessil A160We with controller Bio Media - Marine Pure ceramic Bio Balls. Chemical Filtration - Chemipure Blue ATO - Innovative Marine Hydrofil with pump. Hailea HS-28A Chiller 1/10 HP (Not plumbed in yet) Going to try bare bottom this time. Livestock: Green banded clown goby Purple firefish Cleanup Crew: Nassarius Snail Bubble Bee Snail Blue Legged Hermit (1) Red Legged Hermit (1)
