  1. I got a spare 10L tank and a red sea led 50. Started on 25 Feb 2023, I plan to set a low maintenance softies tank and maybe some inverts. Going bare bottom this time. I went with a tidal 35, set max flow. I go slow with the light 12hrs from 9am. Blue max and white max on 10% for 4 hrs, ramp up and down for 4hrs. I put 5 softies, toadstool, green hairy mushroom, purple anthelia, green devils hand, and an unknown mushroom after diatom bloo, receded. It took almost 10 days of diatom covering the whole rocks, but nothing the snail can't handle. Evaporation around 200 ml for 24 hrs, manually top up. I will make a drip top up for this. That's it for now, until next update
  2. Hey everybody, it’s been a while since I’ve had a reef tank and decided to jump back into the hobby. A little about my reef background, I previously had a 40 gallon long and and 10 Gallon hexagon. I just fell I love with the look of the hexagon tank so I decided to pull the trigger and grab another one. This time 35 gallons instead of 10. Psyched to have a lot more room to work with this time. That being said I have resealed the silicone in the tank as my last 10 gall hex sprung a leak on me and I had to get rid of it 😢 I plan on making this tank super colourful and as crazy looking as possible. I just grabbed the reef rocks today and still haven’t finished arranging them quite the way I want yet but here’s a sneak peak at what’s to come. Any tips and tricks are appreciated. Tank 35 gallon hexagonal Lighting I’m honestly not to sure on what lighting I’m gonna use yet. Comment some suggestions you guys think would be good for the hex. Heater Fluval 200w aquarium heater Flow Fluval Sea 425gph wavemaker pump Flow from aqua clear I also plan to add another bulkhead in the future once I can figure out where it’s needed. Filtration Aquaclear 70 HOB filter I also have a 10 gall sump with an external overflow box that I plan on hooking up to my tank once I get the proper equipment and get things going. Live rock 30lb of Reef rocks I found locally ( hard to get in my area ) Live sand 20lb of Carib Sea sand
  3. This is probably a stupid question and kind of hard to describe without a diagram, but I've been trying to figure out if having the filter floss in the original sponge location will provide good filtration. This is because i feel like the filter pulls in water, then pushes it out to the TOP of the sponge/filter but then the water goes up thru the carbon/media and back out the overflow. So shouldn't the floss/sponge be on the SIDE of the so that it can efficiently filter out the water.
  4. Good afternoon everyone, i currently have a HOB Refugium that I used on my old 10 nano tank. Was thinking about using it n my current 36g Bowfront tank that I have. I was just wondering if it would really be worth it in the long run? The HOB fuge holds about 1 gallon of water and was looking at adding some macro algae to help with nutrient export, along side my skimmer. I don't have the room for a regular refugium because of limited space and my stand doesn't have the place to put one. Was gonna place some extra filter floss in one chamber and leave the other 2 for the macro algae and possibly Pods in the near future. What do you think?

Dimensions: 11.8" x 7.0" x 8.3" Volume: 1.76G(overall) 2.5G(empty) Lighting: 3 x 12" TrueLumen Pro Strips Equipment: AquaClear 20 Heater: none yet (usually maintained at 78–80º F) Circulation: Might add a small powerhead later on Photoperiod: Planning on running it at full power for 8 hrs or so Filtration: 250mL of SeaChem Matrix and stock sponge Livestock: My plan for this tank is to turn it into a small zoa garden with a few encrusting Montipora on either the back wall on Background: Over the past 2.5 years that I’ve been in the Marine side of hobby I’ve set up 3 reef tanks so far a CoralLife Biocube 29, Nuvo 8G and a 20G Long all of which are still up and running. So as many of you know after being in the even a couple of years can lead the collection of old lighting systems, extra rock, and a constant urge for more. That’s where this Pico comes into the scene.I hope that this build will come close to being as awesome as @el fabuloso , @pj86 and @.Newman.epic 3g picos.

Best HOB Skimmer for 36 gallon

Hey everyone, I haven’t been on here in a while as things have been pretty stable luckily. No issues, no tears. I would like to put some more coral in my tank but first id like to make sure I have my head on straight and I want to get a protein skimmer to help with the nitrates. I don’t have a sump so I need a HOB one. I know I previously posted something very similar to this but I wanted something cheap. My budgets a little higher now. I still don’t want to spend so much, but more around $100-$200 . Any help is appreciated. Thanks. edit: it’s a 36 gallon.
  8. I’ve been sitting against the wall staring at my 40 gallon breeder aquarium, and the thought popped into my head, how about Saltwater? I understand that the chemistry is vastly different, and I’m very experienced with freshwater, however saltwater intimidates me. My question is would it be possibly to turn this 40 gallon GLASS not ACRYLIC into a good saltwater aquarium, any information/suggestions would help, but my knowledge on saltwater is limited. I don’t not wish to heavily stock this aquarium because I understand that these creatures are delicate and require a more in depth knowledge.
  9. Hey reefers, So I finally got my tank and im so excited to get started, its a 40 gallon tank. I went with a AquaClear110 Hob filter (Hang on back) an Eheim 150w heater and a saltwater refractometer for today. Im heading back to the Lfs tomorrow to get all of the other goodies like test kits, power-head, lighting, dry rocks, carbon and other stuff like that and possibly a Hob protein skimmer. Im not looking to put many rocks in and only a couple corals also not to sure what stock is going in as of right now just want to get the water parameters thing down pat. Tell me what you think about my setup and feel free to leave any advice that you think would help, Thanks
  10. Hey guys, I've been incredibly busy with life the last few months with moving and work, that I wasn't able to focus too much on my reef keeping besides maintenance. Now that I am able to focus on it again, I have a question I am hoping someone more knowledgeable than me can help answer. I currently use a Aquatic life 115 Mini internal skimmer in my AIO sump of my DIY 25g tank. I have used it the past year. I would love to use some the better skimmers available, but because my tank's back chambers are only 2.9" wide clearance, I barely could fit the aquaticlife without basically forcing it down the chamber. I think this is causing some issues with the intake of the skimmer, since the intake is against the wall. I am thinking about a upgrade, since Im not happy with its performance lately, such as the skimmer not increasing production after a heavy feeding, giving clear tea-like skimmate, the bubbles are not fine enough and the foam head being small. I was looking at the Aquamaxx HOB 1.5 protein skimmer and wondered if that is considered a beneficial upgrade. I figured it must be since it would easily fit in the back chambers, and free up space there.

  12. Some progression on my newest nano reef! Love the way things are progressing! Can't wait for things to grow out! Let me know what you think!!!!
  13. I started a Biocube 29g in March and almost as soon as I had it setup I wanted something a little bigger. We've all been there I decided that a 40 breeder would be a good size in an apartment, and got to work getting the pieces together. I've gotten everything ready now except the tank itself ! Weighing a few final local options. I'm not in a rush so I want to do things right. I started cycling some old live rock that had been sitting dry in the heat for 6+ months. I placed it in a tub with 1.025 saltwater, a cobalt accutherm 250w, and maxijet 400. Dosed to ~10ppm ammonia (Trying it high again after my first tank cycle went so well). I probably should have washed the rock off but I'll do a 100% water transfer before putting it into the tank later on. Currently it has been cycling for 2 weeks. I tested a very small nitrite presence 2 days ago and did a 30% water change with 5g from my Biocube. Nitrites are now at .75 and rising. Once the ammonia is completely processed I'll do the 100% and redose a small amount until I have the tank I want. edit: tested this morning 10/08/17: What do the nitrates look like? I am partially colorblind and the purples are hard for me.
  14. So, I want to add the Reef Octopus HOB Skimmer to my 28G Nano-Cube but I cannot figure out how I can install this/where since I don't have a traditional sump and the lid fully encloses the top of the tank. Has anyone installed one of these on the "sump" in the back or have any suggestions, plus will the tubes fit into the 2" space available in the back. It makes since to me to put it where the water overflows from the tank, but that is where my filters are located. Does it matter if the skimmer intake is placed after the filters? Picture of the "sump" I'm working with ~2" from tank to back wall, and only 3 spots that maintain a constant water height, one being the overflow/filter area.
