  1. Ive got a saltwater aquarium thats getting an upgrade! Its going from a 20 gallon to a 30 gallon, the current stock is 1 clownfish (her husband got brooklynella), 1 firefish goby, 1 clown goby, 1 tail-spot Blenny, and 1 small orange spotted watchman. I know 3 goby like fish would probably fight, but so far the worst that has happened is the Blenny defending his hole. Once i upgrade, im considering getting either some gbg (probably a pair) or a jawfish. Yes i know its more goby and goby like fish but i cant resist them. And from what i heard these species probably wont provide to much trouble. Now what im wondering is will the gbg start to be more active after a while (i know they hide at first), or will they stay hiding? I really love their little hop and their beautiful patterns, but i worry ill never see them in a 30. There should also be a pole, but feel free to give input through responses too!

Banded Eel - building a hide?

I picked up a juvenile banded eel today - he's about 16" or so. I added him into my 55 gallon FOWLR, and will eventually move him into my 125 once he's a bit bigger - just afraid he might get picked on a bit, as the Green-Spotted Puffer has already been bothering him some in the 55. The rock in that tank is pretty solid - more boulders, rather than porous reef rock. But, I've got good filtration and a decent skimmer, so I used it. Not a good set up for an eel to hide, though. Can I maybe throw in a decorated PVC pipe for him to hide in? Will he use it, in your experience? I feel bad for the little guy. Thanks for any insight!

    37 Gallon Extra-High FOWLR Tank!

Hey guys! I already sorta made a thread about this over in the stocking forum, but I figured a proper build thread would be necessary at some point. So here we are! The goal of this tank is to keep it simple and enjoy some fish. I feel like I tend to really get wrapped up in worrying about corals in my reefs, and I tend to get carried away with the "next thing" - a new frag, new lighting, better flow, etc... I don't want any of that in this tank! Right now, at least. I just want to really give these fish the attention that they deserve, and see how this tank ages and evolves. I actually took a Top Fin 37 gallon kit and added a MJ1200 powerhead. That's legit the only thing I added equipment-wise - I think I'll be switching out the cheap HOB filter with an Aquaclear 110 at some point, and I'd like to use a Fluval heater instead of the Top Fin, but hey, it's working right now. Equipment: 37 Gallon Extra-High Aquarium (30" long, 12" deep, 22" tall) Top Fin HOB Top Fin Heater Maxi-Jet 1200 Powerhead 30-ish lbs of rock (some dead, some live) Livestock: 3 Mollies (Basic, I know, but I enjoy them in a saltwater setting) 1 Blue Spotted Puffer 1 Yellow Clown Goby 3 Hermit Crabs That's kind of it for now. Not much has been going on in here - just slowly adding to it and making sure I don't see any ammonia spikes or anything. The chunk of live rock was well-cured, and there's some well-cycled media in the filter, so I think I'll be okay with water parameters. I'm watching them like a hawk, though! Future stocking plans are undecided - I had considered a pair of clowns, but after thinking about it, I don't know if I want them in here. What would you guys add? I had considered maybe a Cherub Angel, but I feel like a 30" tank might be on the small side for them. I think I'll also be adding some more crabs. Shrimp and snails are a no-no - the puffer would eat them. He doesn't seem to bother crabs, though.
  4. Small house, huge tank

    Hello from St Pete, Fl

Greetings all, Been a marine aquarium junkie for 30+years. Always 90g+, now have 250g FOWLR. Now, wifey wants a 32 Biocube for Christmas, so I will be lurking and reading how y’all do these little tanks. She “says” rocks, anemones , soft corals and only 2 clowns (ya right)and nothing else😂. Peace, Jim & Cheryl
  5. Phantomwerkz

    Phantomwerkz - 29g v2.0

15 years ago or so I started my first foray into a salt water aquarium. First up, was a 29g standard glass FO setup that eventually transitioned to a FOWLR with a bunch of acquired LR. Equipment was pretty stock and basic though I ran a Skilter250 alongside an Aquaclear 20 (I think) along with a couple of small Powerheads. Call it beginners luck, though I had a couple of resources to help along the way, I didn’t have too much trouble with it. This tank was up for only 1-2 years along with a 15g Tall that we moved the LR into and then lost due to an exploding thermometer. Can’t recall why exactly it was broken down, I’m thinking I had a heater failure or possibly a crash but we also ended up moving and were unable to have a setup in the new rental. Fast forward to being in our own home for a couple of years now and getting back to the point that we’d like to setup another Aquarium. A LOT seems to have changed and though I thought a 29g was small for a salt water tank before, I LOVE seeing all the Nano and Pico setups that seem to be possible now. I’m trying to be smart though and sticking with part of my philosophy that I “think” served me well last time. Go bigger on equipment in the sense of do not go with bare minimum specs for filtration and flow, aka tank turnover rate. Also, take it SLOW so that’s the plan as well this time and I’m doing more research than before and trying to get my game plan in order. Still have the old 29g glass tank, stand and hood that I planned on using. Having thought about it sitting all this time as well as finding out about Petco’s $1/gal. tank sale, it seemed this would be a no brainer decision. So, on Black Friday checked in to find the $1 sale going on and one 29g tank in stock… SOLD. Went ahead and grabbed a glass top as well. Will still clean and test my old tank and glass top and either find another use or send it on it’s way for a few $’s. The plan for now is basically a FOWLR tank setup again with similar stock featuring at least one pair of Clowns. My wife and I enjoyed our previous clowns and so that’s where we start. She would prefer a FO setup, but I think the health of the tank and maintaining it would be easier with biological filtration so LR created with our own clean dead coral pieces along with maybe 10 lbs of dry rock are my thoughts. I’d like to move towards a more reef setup at some point but I think it’s either a ways down the road on this setup or possibly I do something along the lines of a 10-20 setup for myself (when I can come up with a suitable location). So, here’s what I’ve decided to start out with. Starting Equipment: Aqueon 29 Gal. Blue/Green Chromis - x? Dottyback - x1 Thoughts, Ideas and Suggestions are appreciated and I plan on combing through this site a TON as I gather more insight and inspiration.
  6. Hi All! I've been lurking around for quite some time, reading all that I can read, and researching. I finally took the plunge and started my first saltwater tank - fish only for now. I have a 20H gallon, live sand with dry rock. I started the cycle over a week ago with Bio Spira and Dr. Tim's Ammonium Chloride. According to my testing, I believe the cycle is complete (ammonia is converted to nitrites and then to nitrates, in about 24 hours), however, my nitrates were a little on the high end - between 40-80 ppm. I did a water change yesterday, probably around 15%, and it dropped it down to 20. Is that still too high to start adding fish? Should I do another water change first, to lower them more? Also, my ph is running between 7.8-8.0, is that too low? I plan on starting with a pair of Occ Clownfish, then adding a cleaner shrimp, and possibly a royal gramma, at some point. And of course CUC as needed. Thanks!!
  7. hi everyone! im upgrading from my 15 gallon column tank to an Aqueon 36 gallon bowfront tank. so far it's going great, I have 40 lbs live reef rock, 45 lbs crushed coral, 2 Hydor Koralia 425 gph powerhead, 2 aqueon 100 watt heaters, and an Aqueon 50 filter. the only issue I'm having is that I have no idea where or how to put my rocks, so I'm looking for inspiration please! even its not a 36 gallon. just show me your pics of your purple live rock! also any advice for transferring fish would be appreciated!
  8. I am going to setup a fowlr tank in my 20 gallon hexagon. But I would like to find something decent for a lighting unit. I dont want to go crazy expensive because it is only a fowlr (~100 or less.) Or I could just get a bulb for the current hood I have; but I really dont know the type of bulb to look for. I want something that will be nice and bring out the colors in my fish and crow coralline if possible. ALSO Could I get a glass lid for it from somewhere??? I would like to do this, but dont know if anyone sells them anywhere at all.

    Fast Rock ?

I am starting out my first nano "reef" and want to know what type of rock would be ideal for a quicker setup. Obviously the tank still needs to cycle; however, I would like a rock that will not need to be cured for a long time. I don't plan on putting coral into the tank initially, FOWLR to begin. Having the rock be dry would be fine by me. The options I have seen are the following: Reef saver rock from BRS, Life rock from CaribSea, and Walt Smith Pukani Live Rock - Cured / Cleaned from Premium aquatics. I also was looking at basic caribsea base rock as an option. I just want to be able to set up the tank as fast and hassle free as possible. With the live sand helping a lot in getting bacteria to begin in the tank. I also will use bio spira to help kickstart the tank as well. So far I will be setting it up in a 20 gallon hex tank. Using ocean direct live sand, a hob filter I have laying around (rated for 40g), and some cheap pumps. I plan on stocking with: 2 clowns, a clown goby, and a firefish (and some snails and hermits)
  10. Hey guys, I want to add a 40g FOWLR lionfish tank to my bedroom fishtank corner but I need to make sure that the floors can support the weight. As seen in the diagram below, i would put it along the exterior wall of my house, on the second floor. My room is situated at the back corner of my house so i have two exterior walls, but the unmarked one pictured is interior. I've read a bunch of articles saying that it should be fine but I just want to be sure. Thanks in advance for the feedback! You can follow all my tank builds n such on my youtube page, linked on my profile.
  11. Hello, I'm looking around for an Ich or velvet treatment for my FOWLR tank. I have a 10 gallon quarantine but all 1/2 of the fishes in the DT have ich. Do you have any suggestions which medication really works beside dosing copper on my DT. My fishes are quite big and putting them in that 10 gallon QT is not a good idea. Please help.
