Hello nano-reef friends! I wanted to write up an intro post and get into the community. I've been lurkin' for a few weeks now and thought it was time to start partaking in the discussion. 🙂 For a quick intro, I've been keeping freshwater tanks on and off for about 10 years now. I was always intimidated by the saltwater side of the hobby because of the startup/ongoing costs and perceived "complicated-ness" of it. I always thought that for a successful reef tank you need a really big aquarium (like, 100+ gallons) with a sump and multiple other products that I'd never even heard of when setting up my freshwater tanks. But then I found this forum and was totally inspired and given hope by the countless beautiful and flourishing AIO tanks that you guys have shared! I loved the idea of having one tank with a section in the back (or side, for peninsula styles!) as a place to keep everything you need. Turns out you don't actually NEED a protein skimmer, reactors, and a separate sump! Anyway, now that I'm a few weeks into my research phase, I've learned a TON and have come to a few decisions about what I'd like for my first little reef: 1. I know I want to have a system with softies and LPS corals. Some that I've really been drawn to are zoas, acans, and gorgonians. I only want non-aggressive species because I hate the idea of my corals hurting each other! 2. I want an AIO system that isn't too big, to make maintenance/water changes as simple as possible (for some reason the idea of making my own saltwater is super intimidating!). The two I have my eye on and am still having trouble deciding between are the Fluval Evo 13.5 gallon and the Biocube 16 gallon. I want something that comes with a lid/lighting built in to reduce evaporation and keep costs down on needing to buy separate LEDs. 3. I really like macroalgae - probably from the fact that all my freshwater tanks are planted and the aquascaping is my favourite part of them. Not sure if I'll include any in my first reef tank, but I'll probably want some down the line for their beautiful colours and added benefits for water quality. 4. I want to keep the filtration as natural as possible (spent a lot of time on Algae Barn's website/blog). I'd prefer to rely more on a refugium instead of a host of chemical media. 5. I freaking love tailspot blennies. Anyway - that's probably enough rambling for now (thank you for reading this far!). Would appreciate thoughts/advice on deciding between the Evo and the Biocube, or any other general advice for a newbie reefer. 🙂

I’m one of those people that has flitted off and on the forums over the years. I’ve also been in and out of the hobby. I’ve had freshwater off and on for about 15 years. I had a saltwater Fowler tank for a few years in high school but gave that up when I went to college. I’ve wanted to get a sw for years but I’ve been pretty unstable as far as taking temp jobs all over the country, living abroad and traveling tons. But now I’m kinda settled down a bit and decided it was finally time to jump back in! Back when I had my sw I tried my hand at a couple easy corals but they never did all that well. They kind of existed but never thrived. I suspect I was just too immature to understand how to truly care for em. Anywho I’ve been planning this comeback for a while and today I drove on over to my LFS and picked up my fluval 13.5 evo. I decided I really like the look of the tank, the price was right for what I was looking for and it’s not too big- but not too small. I’m super psyched to get the ball rolling. My intentions at the moment are to keep the stock lighting (kind of the point of getting an all-in-one system right? Haha) and I plan to mod some extra blue leds on in there (I saw a journal where someone did that here). I plan to pick up some eggcrate and also mod the filtration as it seems most everyone on her does. I’m not suuuuper diy minded but I love doing it (I just kinda suck at it, so we’ll see). Ive picked up all my extras as far as test kit and sand and even about 11lbs of rock from the lfs. I plan to get it thrown together tonight and to get that cycle started. I do still need to go get the eggcrate and some media for it. My plans inhabitant wise are still pretty up in the air. In the past I had a clown (honestly it’s been 10+ years and I don’t remember exactly which as far as percula or which). I had a sixline wrasse that I LOVED but unfortunately lost to a surfing accident. I had two cardinals and a bicolor blenny (ended up being the most active and interesting fish in the whole tank). - this time around I’d love to try some different things but my heart still tugs at the clown (why do we all love them so much). And I’ve been thinking perhaps a different species of blenny. But who knows. As as far as corals I want to start off real easy, so I’m thinking some zoas and maybe a hammer. I once saw a tank that had green star spread across the back wall and I loooved how that looked. Soo. We’ll see where I end up. Sorry now im completely rambling. In any case, I’ll document my journey here. And I consider myself an experienced newbie... any and all input is always welcome. I love to learn and grow and won’t be annoyed by friendly advice!

Hello Everybody, I am new to this forum and i just thought that i would take some pictures of my Aquascape and share it with you. 🐠 Tank Capacity: 90 litres/24 US Gallons Materials: Caribsea life rock & Hugo Kamishi coral sand. Lighting: Twinstar 600e (I know this is a planted tank light but i thought i would give it a try) Filtration: All pond solutions 1000EF *Also if somebody could give me some tips about which macroalgae to add to my display tank, i am abit cautious because i know that some species like calurpa can destroy or ruin a tank quite quickly so some advice would be great.* -
It's finally here! I just got the IM Fusion 10 AIO as my first ever reef tank! I'm really excited to get into this side of the hobby after spending a good amount of time on the freshwater side. Equipment: IM Fusion 10 EVO Clip 3W Aquarium LED Light Flex Clamp Nano Marine Fish Coral 6x 3 Watts by Odyssea Heater has not been purchased yet (Eheim Jager or Cobalt Neotherm?) ~10lbs of rock free from my uncle 20lbs of Caribsea live sand (probably overkill) Instant ocean salt Ade Advanced Optics Dual Scale 1.0 to 1.070 S.G. Salinity Refractometer for Aquarium & Seawater Stock pump If you guys have suggestions on what I could add/change please let me know 🙂 I just set up a couple different arrangements of my rock and can't decide which I prefer As for stock, I am unsure on a clean up crew, but am set on having a goby/pistol shrimp pair as well as some sexy shrimp that would host a rock flower nem. I'm also thinking of adding one more small fish like a goby or blenny or some fish that wouldn't always be perched on a rock. I don't think I will get into coral right off the bat but that hasn't stopped me from coming up with ideas and researching them. I've looked into Duncans, Acans, Candy Canes, Zoas, and Ricordia. I am going to stay away from SPS coral until I have A LOT more experience in the hobby.
