    505Nano*New 16 Biocube

Hello all, new to this forum and the nano community. I currently have a 54 Gal Aqueon corner tank, which was my first saltwater tank. I have successfully had that tank running from July 2019 and in that time, I instantly fell in love with owning and maintaining ( weird, I know) a saltwater aquarium, its almost therapeutic. I find myself now always looking for places to put a tank in my small ish home and I decided to look for nano for my bedroom. Marineandreef had a sweet deal for the 16 biocube with stand for $269 (after discount and sale) and I decided it was time to expand ha. After convincing wifey (really just ordering and apologizing after), I found myself tracking and waiting. Fast fwd to today, I have the stand set up in the corner of our room with the nano boxed back up ( did not want the toddlers to move it around and possibly drop it empty). I am currently studying, reading the journals and ordering the necessary items needed to begin the tank and start the cycle (so much fun, bleh). Enough backstory, the following will be about the nano I decided to start a journal from the very beginning of this nano to notate what is planned and get advice. As far as Filtration, I have decided to use the included basket for now with the following in order: Poly Filter Floss SeaChem Purigen SeaChem Matrix bio-media in bag (obviously) I have contemplated so much on the filtration and am open to any suggestions. I do not think I will be doing a refug at this time, so that will not be currently considered. The Heater I have decided to go with is the Aqueon Pro 100W, which will be placed in the 1st chamber after false floor is removed. Rock & Substrate: Walt Smith Reef Rock 2.1 20lb dry purple rock Carribsea fiji pink live sand 20lb I do plan on taking some of the smaller pieces of live rock from my current 54 gal to assist in seeding nano. Wavemaker will be the Jebao SW2. This is the brand I currently use on my 54 Gal, and have had no issues and love the controllers for them. I do not plan on modifying the led lighting just yet. Also, I will NOT be running a skimmer on this nano at this time, as I don't mind maintenance and will be planning on weekly 5 gal water changes. Now, Salt.. When I started my 54 gal, I initially went with IO salt as I was not planning on having coral, but of course I was seduced by the beauty.. now I am wanting to switch to some type of high quality reef salt for both tanks. I am leaning more towards Red Sea Coral Pro Salt, I would love any input on this! As far as livestock, I am planning on having 2 designer clownfish (havent really decided on type yet) and maybe a firefish or goby, also undecided lol I will have a clean up crew consisting of a couple trochus, cerrith and maybe astrea snails as well as a couple hermits and debating on a fighting conch. I am undecided on which corals I will be adding just yet, as I want to aquascape first and see where I can place them, which will better determine what I decide on. I will be posting on this journal for anyone who would like to keep up with the nano build. Let me know if anyone has any advice or critique! Thank you! 505nano

    watanabeireef- NUVO25reef

Welcome to my build thread and thanks for stopping by!The Details:This thread is going to follow me taking my very new reef, I decided to go with a NUVO 25 gallon. I have had several years of saltwater and reef keeping experience and have recently decide to jump back in. The tank has been aquascaped with roughly 18 pounds of reef rock. My vision was to create hiding spaces for fish and invertebrates while still having an open concept with plenty of water movement. The tank water is still settling, so it's not entirely clear. Please feel free to comment and provide any feedback. :)
  3. Hi to all I have been lurking in this forum for a few years waiting to get involved in this beautiful hobby. Not having the time, enough knowledge, space, or resources, I procrastinated the start up of my 14 gal bio cube. On my daily lurking schedule I read Christopher Marks announcement for the Old School 2.5 gal Pico Reef competition. And as life has settle down a bit I think it’s time to begin. I don’t run for the price, I run for the joy, and to keep a continuos advance in my Pico reef and to keep track of it. I am very excited, it is a great forum, because of all of you, and the best way to learn and share knowledge. 4. 👋🏻 hello! This is my first saltwater tank, and with not much of an aquarium culture in my little mountain town, I’m hoping to share and learn with some other obsessed aquarists! I’ve got a nice 55 gal South American freshwater planted tank that’s been going great for about 2 years. I got this biocube 29 used with all of the stock equipment, but have upgraded to the following -eheim 100 watt heater -inkbird temp controller -duetto ATO -IM wavelink wave maker -stock skimmer -dry rock from Bulk Reef Supply -inTank media basket with filter floss and bio media plate pieces -stock lighting (for now) I’m just now cycling, entering week 2, so feeding and testing for ammonia/nitrites. I seeded with seachem stability. Running with lights off. I will run a small Refugium with chaeto in the back sump when I get some nitrates and phosphates going. Would love to hear advice or encouragement! Thanks for letting me join the forum 👍🏻 Ps follow me on Twitter @JulieReefer
  5. Hello all, first off I happy to become a member of the nano reef community. I inhareted a crashing cube that didn't make it. I cleaned the tank with vinegar added aragonite sand and some beautiful dry rock from reef cleaners (give them a look for dry rock it is gorgeous). I have learned a lot from the members on this site from lurking around and now have an idea of what I want to do with the 3 chambers. Thanks for any help in advance and I hope y'all can help. I have an idea I would like to do so I'll run past you experienced reefers. I pulled the sponges, rings, bioballs, and expired carbon and ordered an in tank media basket for chamber 1 a roll of filter floss, and purigen w/bags to use as needed. I also want to run two return pumps but I want the water to go through all three chambers so I will put a bulkhead in wall dividing chamber 2/3 put the 2nd pump in chamber 2 but plumb intake from chamber three with return nozzle out of chamber 2. To complete I want a skimmer/ato not to depend on, but for a neglect safety net (I have a weird work schedule) so at first I was thinking place the skimmer in chamber two like everyone else but then my need to experiment got the best of me and I wondered where does most surface scum end up so I added a cap of vegetable oil to my water only tank and noticed it stayed in chamber one for a few minutes then worked itself to chamber two where the heavier more condensed oil swirled around but the lighter broken down oil made it's way to chamber 3 where it stayed and did not make it's way back to the tan. That makes me wonder if I modify the return line to make the tunze fit would chamber 3 be a better place than two? Also would running two pumps make the flow in the sump so high it would render the skimmer useless? I don't want power heads cluttering the tank. Both returns would be 1/2 inch split loc line totalling 4 nozzles for random cross flow. Please tell me your thoughts even if you think it is ridiculous.
