  2. Hello everyone, I want to learn about some ways in which a coral might bleach or die. I am particularly interested in bleaching/death rates for each reason. As an example, I believe bleaching due to low light intensity might take a couple days while excessive light intensity might kill a coral much faster. Does anyone have a refference for all possible death rates of corals? Although I'm interested in sps corals, information on every coral would helpful. This could help use better make an idea on why our corals might br struggling. Thanks!
  3. I recently got my first SPS frag, a blueish Montipora Digitata. Now, with my other corals, I could get a decent enough idea if they were happy or not concerning flow and lighting for example, because their response was quite obvious and quick (Euphyllia and Rhodactis for example). However, this being my first SPS, I am not so sure, so I figured I'd make a small thread, hoping you guys and girls could help me out. As for my parameters, I measured these this morning and the frag is in my system for about a week; Ammonia: 0ppm Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: ~3ppm Phosphate test kit is on its way PH: 8.2 dKH: 11.3 Calcium: 475 Lighting: AI Prime HD on a somewhat customized AB+ schedule and on an acclimation period until February 23 Flow: return nozzle and Aqamai KPS Left side view right side view Close up (crop) where the polyps seem to extend the most I am not entirely sure yet about the placement, because I see a lot of shading/dark sides on the frag, which is a result of the shape as well. I am also wondering if I could accidentally burn it, having it so high up on the rocks, that's why I put the Prime on an acclimation period though. Last but not least, my apologies for the quality of the images. They were made with my phone, yet I am looking to buy a filter and magnifier soon, because I really enjoy taking pictures of the frags and how they're evolving/growing. What do you guys and girls think? Polyp extension alright, or no? Anything I could or should change, any feedback is much appreciated! Bonus question, is it normal to tweak that much in the early stages of having a reef aquarium? I just can't seem to let it be, instead, I am wondering if the light schedule is alright, what about the placement of the frags....Flow, wondering if the return nozzle is aimed alright and the KPS schedule is decent enough....Oooh, how about the turnover rate? 🤦‍♂️ (I am really enjoying it though, don't get me wrong, haha!)
  4. Hello fellow reefers. I may have a somewhat ethical question for you. Recently I bought a gorgeous, small, piece of Euphyllia paraancora. Being curious where it came from, I contacted the retailer. A well known, European store. They were very helpful and honest in there answer, saying that the coral came from the sea, instead of a coral farm or aquacultured frag system for example. Now, I am very new to the hobby and guess I have to get used to the idea of corals gathered from the seas. However, I do care greatly for our oceans and their fragile ecosystems and I am wondering how the Nano Reef community thinks about this. The thing is, being so new, I have not met many fellow reefers yet to swap or buy frags. I have visited several (inter)local LFS's and I can't say that their livestock and aquariums looked healthy and well cared for. The online retailer on the other hand received many great reviews and my experience with them so far is really great. The packaging is awesome, everything I ordered was alive and well and they were very helpful and responsive as well. So, here is a penny for your thought(s) 🙃, please let me know how you think about this and if I am overly concerned or if my worries are justified.
  5. I have had a healthy large toadstool now for many years. This same toadstool I thought was going through its normal shedding, but it seemed to be taking longer than it normally does. I noticed a round brown spot developed almost overnight right near the center. As I normally do daily, I was blowing off the rocks with the baster and decided to blow what seemed to be a brown film on the toadstool. The tissue in the area was so soft that it blew a hole directly through the outer skin making a hole!! What is going on?! Never seen this before and need to know what I need to do. All other corals, including my sps are all fine, but it. See pic.
  6. Hello guys, About two years ago, I picked up a green rhodactis mushroom from the reef store. As soon as I put it in my tank, it spread out very wide and became very colorful. I continued to love the coral, and it kept growing until it doubled in size and became as large as the palm of my hand. It kept on flourishing and growing like this for about a year. Then, I noticed it wasn't coming out as much and I took some observations and did some research and found out that it was going to split, and it did. So then there were two mushrooms, but it just continued to go downhill from there. They shrank very gradually and lost their color, but I figured it was just a small phase and did nothing about it. Now, a year later, one of them has disintegrated, and I have one left about the size of a penny. It's not colorful anymore. I miss how it was two years ago 😭 Water parameters have not drastically changed at all, I just don't know what's wrong. Please help
  7. first off i want to find out what kind of coral i bought a while back. im just curious. and also i just finished feeding phytoplankton to my corals and are now feeding reef-roids. out of curiosity should i find a new coral food or maybe should i have any advice with food i currently feed them. Note: [my tank is a little cloudy because i just finished feeding and accedentally overloaded the food. lol, my bad] the coral is in the shell
  8. Hi there fellow nano reefers! 😜 I'm back at the aquarium game! In the past i had many aquaria, amazon biotoop, malawi cyclids, freshwater european etc. Only once had a go on the saltwater thing once, a 450 liter tank with everything going but time and place. So i had to abandon that... But after a few years, we're back! Now with a nice little 36 liter nano reef! Actually a Aqualantis Nano Marin 40, but i found out it holds 36 liters. So without further notice, here's the startup and a bunch of photo's! I hope you guys like it, have some tips and share your thoughts! The (mini) history: Montego Nano Bay 06-01-2019 Got the tank! Got the tank in! Second hand and…. back glass broken on transport. So, first job, fix the tank! After fixing of course water test. 9. my coral had just recently stressed out which aat first i assummed somthing went wrong and checked all my tats and they looked nothing abnormal temp did not swing i have no idea what could have caused a salinity swing but i checked it and no changes... i took a loork at my 4 other corals and they are doing well some doing better than ever i just dont understand how this could of gotten this way considering it was just 2 hours since i last checked it and it was doing really well i would assume my idiot emerald crab walked all over it because it has no regard to any living thing it will step over hermit crabs other corals and even attempted at my cleaner shrimp or somthing else happened that i cant explain
  10. My Biocube 32 has been cycled for around three weeks, I added the first members of the CuC crew two weeks ago, and the first fish, a royal gramma, several days ago. I want to buy my first, hardier coral soon. Can I do it now, or would it be best to wait? Also, what would people suggest as a first coral? I've looked at green star polyps, mushrooms and others, but I'm curious what others would advise.
  11. I have a 10 gallon nuvo cube and a kessil A80 light, I just got two clowns, two hermits, and 4 lps soft corals. I was wondering what should my light schedule be like? And the intensity and so forth. Right now as I’m going to bed I have it at 0/0 but I’m not sure if that is okay for coral? Please HELP!
  12. Hey guys, sorry if this is an obvious or stupid question, but can anyone properly ID this coral that I bought? It was sold to me as a long armed plate coral I believe, but I feel like it’s something else? Thanks!
  13. So as you can see in the title I have finally broke down and bought a Red Sea max 170 with the sump upgrade after I saw that my LFS was doing a 15% discount on them. But I haven't filled this tank yet but I will probably buy some water to fill later today, this is MY first tank, but I helped take care of one at the LFS I help out at. But basically I know I want corals, there my favorite thing in the reefing hobby. I will probably keep the Red Sea skimmer in the back chamber along with the media basket then in the sump upgrade I will most likely do a refugium. The light is a AI hydra 26, and I might get a MP-10, if not I might just get 2 korelias to tide me over till I get the MP-10. So now that you all know the equipment im running im wondering what livestock I can keep. Coral -GSP (separate rock) -Finger Leather -Toadstool -Zoas -Hammer -Frogspawn -Candycane -Elegence -Possibly acans -Later down the line a Monti cap or two. -And then any other corals that I might find interesting later down the line. Fish (I order from what will be added last to what will be added first) -Pair of Occ. Clowns -Yellow corris wrasse (favorite fish) -Yellow clown goby -Pearly jawfish Inverts - 3-4 Narrsarius snails - 3-4 Trochus snails - Cleaner shrimp Clams (later after tank has matured) -1 Maxima -1 Deresa The tank is about 24x24x24 Any thoughts much appreciated
  14. Hi all! This is my first post on here but I’m looking to find some help with my recently bought twizzler Zoas! About three weeks ago I purchased a twizzler zoa frag and since then it has not done well in my tank. It started off with five polyps that looked healthy and it has now depleted to 2 maybe 3. I tested some water levels yesterday and I got these results: Alk: 120 ppm Ph: 8.0 Nitrite: 0 mg/L Nitrate: 20 mg/L I also tested salinity and it was a little salty so I did a slight water change and fixed that. I have been feeding it benepets reef food twice a week since I’ve purchased it. I currently have it in my 13.5 gal fluval evo that also contains two emerald crabs, a condylactis anem, and a GSP coral. The only sign of damage toward the zoa was an accidental pinch from my emerald crab early on as a piece of mysis shrimp landed on the zoa and the crab accidentally pinched and sorta mutilated one of the polyps while grabbing the food. I don’t know what else to do but I really don’t wanna lose this guy, please help!
  15. i am looking for suggestions for a 150 gallon reef tank and i would like to know what your opinion of what i should stock my only rules is they have to be reef safe or at least with caution this variety can be anything from clowns to butterflies and angels to dragonets, inverts to corals. feel free to state your opinion down below.
  16. Hello, I am pondering on some corals of interest to populate my tank. I am not the biggest fan on soft corals and I am considering some zoas or maybe mushrooms, but I plan my tank to be filled mostly with sps. Since I am a long way before that, I have been quite interested in Australian Scolymias, but I am wondering if they are good candidates to some of the first corals in a tank. I have been reading about this beautiful corals and they appear to be easy to take care of given the right conditions. Considering the prices that these corals can get, I do not want to buy one just to kill it. What do you guys think? are Australian scolymias a good first coral? Thanks!
  17. i have visited my LFS and saw some majestic pakistani butterfly fish or red tail butterflyfish now correct me if im wrong but there are NOT REEF SAFE so i wanted to know how i may be able to house them together with minimal damage to corals
  18. Hi - recently picked up these two frags but I have no idea what they are! Ones a birds nest - seems like a yellow green color (seriatopora I think) but not certain of the other acro. It’s a dark green. Trying to figure this out so I can provide the best tank placement. Thanks for your help! (The lighting doesn’t do the color justice)
  19. I got this new frag from a local reefer. Not sure what it’s called. I’d love to know if any one has any ideas
  20. Just wondering if a candy cane coral can eat fish. I have a citrinis clown goby, cleaner shrimp, Halloween hermit, and some snails in my tank. Used to have more fish but things went wrong and only my goby is left. I really like that little guy and wondering if he is safe with the candy cane coral I just put in my tank.
  21. Went to the Dallas north aquarium today just to look around and dream about my future large tank and my wife decided to get me some stuff.... early anniversary gift. Icecap salinity checker, candy cane and stylo coral.
  22. Anyone know what these white spots could be on my heteroxenia? I don’t see it on my other Xenia’s
  23. So as the title states, can we? Or can we not? Being Reef hobbiest as a whole we all have many things we say can or cannot be done, from fish store employees, to hobby literature, , veterans, to beginners, everybody’s opinions are different. I’ve worked in the industry for years, and have heard many many things. What I’ve noticed is most of these have no bases in actual science. Some of which I’ve proven through expierments to be false and others true (gorgonians do not die if they touch air, some sponges however do) what I have found is a “you cannot unless you....” is more appropriate. So everybody post things that you think cannot be done or “rules” you have heard that you are unsure about and let’s discuss them. See if someone has evidence to the contrary. And maybe have some results for expierments proving if this to be the case or not. Please let’s not take unneeded risks with livestock, always be mindful and responsible of the creatures we care for. And please keep an open mind and remember some of the species we keep now would have been considered impossible not that long ago.
  24. I purchased this around 7 months ago, and it has absolutely exploded in size. So much so that it’s now too big for my nano..... I’m not confident when it comes to fragging so I’d like to find it a new home. I count 9 frags at 2+ inches each, not including the stalk. this thing is 8” tall and 7” wide when fully opened. Asking $125 local pickup. Frags should pull $300+
  25. Hobbs's 8gal Nuvo Reef Chronicling the development of a pristine nano ecosystem. Goal: minimize weekly maintenance while maintianing a portable and hardy marine reef Specs: Tank: Nuvo Aquarium Nano Reef 0202 8 gallon capacity Filtrations: Mechanical Sponge, activated carbon sponge, phosphate sponge Light: 8 watt 14,000k (6 white diodes, 4 blue) Sand: Arag-Alive Bahamas Oolite Live Rock: 6.6 lbs of cured live rock, fairly porous but could be better. Coralline growth present Water: R/O with salt from LFS. Total water is 5 gallons Start date: 8/5/17 Reasoning: Wanted a small durable aquarium that would be easy to move every year. Modern and sleek design with LEDs was a massive plus. Wanted to maximize biological filtration so wanted as fine as sand as possible and as much rock that would asthetically fit in the tank Initial thoughts: The tank is too small for all the fish I want, the sand is too fine, the light needs to be stronger. Still looks super cool. Plans: Have 2 small fish, maximize symbiotic pairings, have lots of inverts and corals. Maybe future anemone or clam (need vast lighting overhaul first, I know )
