  1. Had these two clowns for nearly a year, ate together, swam together, slept together - the smaller has been submissive since day-one. About a month ago I'm assuming the larger started to properly-mature into a female and became very aggressive towards the smaller, so much so that she chased him around essentially all day, then all night, and was still chasing him in the morning. Even if he hid she would pursue him. I put her in a breeder box for a week and reintroduced them, the female acted as if nothing had changed and didn't attack at all, they ate, swam, and slept together again for about two weeks. The last week she's become somewhat rougher during the day causing some minor fin-damage, but at night she will aggressively attack the smaller until he hides on the other side of the tank - sometimes causing some nasty fin damage, panicked surface-splashing, and a desperate little fish who doesn't even try to fight back. I'm not overly concerned about most of the fin damage as its' pretty superficial, however one of the two lower-leading fins is in tatters and has been torn near-totally-through in multiple places, and the dorsal fin is showing spines. No damage to the body, the pectorals, or the tail fin - no damage to either's mouth either. How damaged is too damaged and at what point do two clowns, who get along during the day and swim together -but not at night-, need to be separated as incompatible? I've never run into anything like this before, any help is appreciated.

    Clownfish Skinny

I got a new pair about a few weeks ago. Everything was going good. Both of them happy and moving great. But I started to notice the male becoming skinny, not moving as much, and seems to always be hungry. I give them mysis shrimp daily and some omega one pellets. I switched over to some brine shrimp and still no luck! I was thinking maybe it's mouth is too small so I cut all the food in small pieces. However, now he seems uninterested in everything. Really getting worried and even asked for help at LFS and they told me he'll eventually eat it but it's really concerning now. Any advice? Female is perfectly fine.
  3. Hello, I'm really worried about my clowns. I have 2 clownfish in a 10g FOWLR; tested the water last weekend, and the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates are at zero, pH at 8. Everything was fine until my male clownfish had some stringy poop a few days ago and stopped eating today, so I put a dose of Prazi-pro in the tank. A few minutes later, my female clownfish starting doing backflips, completely flipping from head to tail. This is NOT twitching/dominance, etc. When I try to Google this all I find is responses about clownfish shaking and this is completely different. I uploaded a video at the link below, hopefully it will finish processing soon. She had been totally fine before and seems to have calmed down since. Both are acting lethargic near the sand right now. I'm new to the hobby and leaving on Wednesday for Thanksgiving so would really appreciate any advice to help heal both my clownfish! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wghCRVniQZA

    Clownfish being to aggressive

So I know im not to active on here and I should probably scroll around to see if anyone else has had this issue before. But as I am more confused and concerned than just curious about it, ill make a post instead. Give or take about 2 months ago I got myself a Green LTA to try to host my 2 clownfish. All seemed well until one of my clownfish kicked the other out of the anemone. Thinking nothing of it I just let the 2 clowns be and they seemed to be getting along. Fast forward a few weeks and the anemone moved closer to some corals so I move them, unlucky move for me as the clownfish that hosted the anemone started to bite and fin smack my hand. ( cute but tingly ), thinking its territorial I just gently move the anemone away from the corals and everything is ok. Fast forward to about 3 days ago and still going on today, the clownfish has started to attack my inverts and starfish. ( my brittlestar and fire red shrimp to be exact ). I'm worried that this clownfish may end up killing my inverts and wether or not its mated with the other clownfish, im unsure if it has become a female ( they are both the same size ) and became more territorial due to the anemone being put in there. Is there a way to kinda help my inverts out? Or would my option be to remove the "female" clownfish and get another one instead?

    Clown Harem

I am setting up a 72 gallon clownfish harem with 18 clowns. I am planning to purchase all 18 from the same clutch, plenty of Bta anemones, and feeding 4 times a day using an auto feeder to reduce aggression. I have a few questions though. The first is on flow. What type of flow pump would you use? I’m trying to decide between a gyre and a puck. The second question is on cuc. I am running a protein skimmer rated for more than double my tank size. Along with a refugium, Carbon and gfo. Would this be overkill or too little? 2x sand sifting gobys (not sure which yet) 5x astrea snails 5x nassarius snails 5x trochus snails 3x red leg hermits 3x blue leg hermits 1x tuxedo urchin The third question is on anemones. Should I place the clowns In the tank before or after I stock anemone? Does anyone have any suggestions on types of food your bta anemones prefer? The forth is on clown food. What type of food would you recommend? Any suggestions on good auto feeders? Any other suggestions and tips would be greatly appreciated.
  8. I just set up a 55 gallon tank with clownfish. The only things I have in the tank besides the live rock and sand. It’s been 4 days since they ate. Won’t eat for me but when we bought them at the store, they were going nuts for the owner. Feeding frenzy!! Bought the same food they were feeding them. Tried dropping it in front of their face, putting it on top. Everything. Starting to get a little worried. any advice is appreciated!! Thanks

    Clownfish ich? (Saltwater noob!)

Hi! Im new to saltwater keeping! I saw my clownfish rubbing its side on the sand and thought it was just playing, upon more research I realized it could be ich. Im not really sure... im new to saltwater keeping so every literally thing i find off, i google them. I could just be paranoid but i’ll really what to make sure. If this is ich what do you suggest i do? I have a 10 gallon with 2 clownfish, a cleaner shrimp and live rock and live sand. corys IM 14 gallon

hi guys about 10 years ago i had a 65 gallon reef that i loved! since moving to nyc i haven't set one up until now. which began as a very basic 10 gallon tank. a month in she started leaking which forced me to upgrade to something a little bigger but much nicer. so heres what i have. tank -IM nuvo 14 gallon heater-cobalt 100w lighting -current orbit marine led (light works great for the price and what i have for now) -finnex light (for refugium) filtration -purigen -chemipure -phosnet i also have the algae barn nano refugium kit. -finnex hob refugium i have about 17lbs of live rock i got from my LFS (pacific aquarium) 5lbs of live sand flow -sicce .5 silent pump (stock pump was too loud) nano koralia weekly water changes (about 2 gallons) the old tank is pictured first. i liked the rock work much more in the first tank. all together the tank is about 3 months old.
  11. My clownfish has not been eating for 2/3 days now, it is breathing very heavily, swimming in just one spot of the tank majority of the time and the poo is very unusual. 12. Hi, Can anyone help please, I bought Promiscuous Black Clown Fish a few day ago. It was swimming and breathing fine but now it's starting to breath very rapidly, not eating like normal and swimming in place majority of the time. Can anyone please help!!!!!!🐠

    Ratvan's RSM 130D

Hi, So I am thinking about upgrading my tanks at work (2.5G Pico and 5.5G Nano) for after the contest finishes this year. I want to upgrade to a single system with a larger water capacity as the office shuts down for Christmas and I am not comfortable leaving these running unattended for over a week, even with DIY ATO. So I did what any respecting person would do while at work, trawl through EvilBay, I managed to find a tank in the size that I want Red Sea Max 130D, currently I am winning the bidding war online with this. I am attempting to win. Red Sea Max 130D Tank Tunze 6015 Wavemaker Media Basket Tunze 9002 Skimmer *** Most likely trade or sell this*** Powerhead 2x Stock Return Pumps Cabinet Ends 5pm on Friday, nice So as far as I can tell I still need to purchase the below Heater: I am thinking that I need a 200-300W heater for a 34 Gallon Tank? Entering British Winter now so will need more than moving temp 5 Celcius Lights: Obviously I have my Chinese Black Box (168W) which should be sufficient for this tank, I have also put aside a small budget (£150) for lighting upgrades if required Biofilter: I will need more Rock, thinking about going slowly with this build and seeing if i can get my hands on some Stax Rocks and Dr Tims and going dry start route this time Next Question, something that has been on my mind for a little while now. Lagoon, Penninsula, Bommie, what does this aquascaping names actually mean?
  15. Hey guys, I have had ocellaris clownfish for around 1 month now and they were doing fine. The only weird thing I would notice is one of them would relentlessly bite my fingers everytime I do a water change or try to place/change coral position. Last week the aggressive one started to bully the other clown, I did my research online and read that it is normal behavior while pairing so I let them be and had to watch heartbroken as it would bully the other fish almost out of the water. I have had it when one day I woke up to an extremely pale clown, so I netted the aggressive fish and put it in its own smaller plastic tank and placed that inside the water too (I have read that this method works to reset territorial boundaries and make the aggressive fish used to having anohter fish in the tank). Well, even after a week, it seems like the clown keeps charging inside the plastic tank at the other clown to try and attack it and keeps bumping its head into the side of the tank trying to get to its pair. I was planning on taking it out today after 7 days but I am terrified now as I DO NOT WANT A DEAD FISH resulting from a fight. I will take full resposibility for this matter and LFS doesnt take fish back, so I need a solution to this please if anyone has experience with fighting clowns, I have done almost everything I have found online from solutions and nothing seems to work. Btw, the other clownfish regained its color and is no longer pale after being safe from the aggressive one for 7 days. Tank is 10g, has a protein skimmer that works 16 hours or less a day. I feed once a day, my clowns and a fire shimp. I have a zoa garden and a leather finger coral. Tank parameters are stable. I only dose bacteria every other day due to the tank being less than 2 months old. Thank you in advance.

    505Nano*New 16 Biocube

Hello all, new to this forum and the nano community. I currently have a 54 Gal Aqueon corner tank, which was my first saltwater tank. I have successfully had that tank running from July 2019 and in that time, I instantly fell in love with owning and maintaining ( weird, I know) a saltwater aquarium, its almost therapeutic. I find myself now always looking for places to put a tank in my small ish home and I decided to look for nano for my bedroom. Marineandreef had a sweet deal for the 16 biocube with stand for $269 (after discount and sale) and I decided it was time to expand ha. After convincing wifey (really just ordering and apologizing after), I found myself tracking and waiting. Fast fwd to today, I have the stand set up in the corner of our room with the nano boxed back up ( did not want the toddlers to move it around and possibly drop it empty). I am currently studying, reading the journals and ordering the necessary items needed to begin the tank and start the cycle (so much fun, bleh). Enough backstory, the following will be about the nano I decided to start a journal from the very beginning of this nano to notate what is planned and get advice. As far as Filtration, I have decided to use the included basket for now with the following in order: Poly Filter Floss SeaChem Purigen SeaChem Matrix bio-media in bag (obviously) I have contemplated so much on the filtration and am open to any suggestions. I do not think I will be doing a refug at this time, so that will not be currently considered. The Heater I have decided to go with is the Aqueon Pro 100W, which will be placed in the 1st chamber after false floor is removed. Rock & Substrate: Walt Smith Reef Rock 2.1 20lb dry purple rock Carribsea fiji pink live sand 20lb I do plan on taking some of the smaller pieces of live rock from my current 54 gal to assist in seeding nano. Wavemaker will be the Jebao SW2. This is the brand I currently use on my 54 Gal, and have had no issues and love the controllers for them. I do not plan on modifying the led lighting just yet. Also, I will NOT be running a skimmer on this nano at this time, as I don't mind maintenance and will be planning on weekly 5 gal water changes. Now, Salt.. When I started my 54 gal, I initially went with IO salt as I was not planning on having coral, but of course I was seduced by the beauty.. now I am wanting to switch to some type of high quality reef salt for both tanks. I am leaning more towards Red Sea Coral Pro Salt, I would love any input on this! As far as livestock, I am planning on having 2 designer clownfish (havent really decided on type yet) and maybe a firefish or goby, also undecided lol I will have a clean up crew consisting of a couple trochus, cerrith and maybe astrea snails as well as a couple hermits and debating on a fighting conch. I am undecided on which corals I will be adding just yet, as I want to aquascape first and see where I can place them, which will better determine what I decide on. I will be posting on this journal for anyone who would like to keep up with the nano build. Let me know if anyone has any advice or critique! Thank you! 505nano
  17. So i got 2 clownfish from my local fish store and added them to my tank on 2/7 (it’s 2/11/20 today). They havent eaten yet as far as i can tell. I’ve seen one of them take a flake in there mouth and spit it out, put it back in their and mouth and spit it out repeated a few times. One time the other clown did it with a pellet. (i’m still trying to figure out what food they’ll eat. So far tried flakes, pellets, and san francisco marine cuisine frozen food. No success with any of them.) the water param seems fine i think. salinity 1.023 temp 77.7-78.1 ammonia: <0.25 nitrite: 0 nitrate: 1ppm maybe? pH: 8.2 i havent done a water change yet. on the first day they were put in the tank one of the clownfish pooped fine but the other had white stringy poop attached to it. and then on the first/second day i noticed his face area isn’t quite clean looking? (Please see photo) the other one has it too but just not as much. Is it flukes? should i do a freshwater dip? Do i need medication? If so, what medication is safe? I don’t have any other fish or coral. Just 2 clowns with rock. also one of the clown’s pelvic fin is “clamped”? Like it’s attached to its stomach and won’t open up like the other clown. also also how do i coax them into eating?
  18. Okay so, I have two black and white clown fish they were brought from a tank with around 8 of them in around 2 months ago. They have been getting along really well until.. I noticed today one of them is bullying and attacking the other, the victim is now hiding in a tiny gap in the rock. While the bully swims freely around the tank. I also noticed in corner of the tank sand has been moved in one spot causing a small crater in the sand. This sounds like they are working things out with regards to sex changing. My question is, is this part of the pairing process? I haven't read anywhere that during the pairing process one clown fish hides for his life. Is the pairing failing or does it just take time for sex to change? Any information or knowledge would be gratefully appreciated (water levels are all good.)
  19. Hi everyone, I had a mated pair of midnight clowns, and today, Stedman (the male) jumped into the back of the 16 gallon Biocube. Being unable to swim against the pull of the pump for a couple of hours straight, he expired, so now Oprah is in there all alone. There's also a well fed orange spot goby in there. It's very well filtered (3Kg biohome in a canister, 13 lbs life rock, dosed with bacteria during weekly WC, plenty of mechanical), fully cycled, 1 inch SB. I was curious what my next fish should be. Thanks in Advance! PJ

    Help! Clown fish acting weird

My tanks been cycled awhile and I finally went out and got two clown fish and they checked out the whole tank and then they both found a spot they like I think n then they started just laying in the sand. Not really moving. My male will get up and move around then go back to laying down like he’s dead. My water levels are good so I don’t know what’s wrong

    IM Nuvo 20g Build Thread

Build Thread! Start Date: 7/31/2019 Most Recent Pic: (12/14/19) Hardware: Tank: Innovative Marine Nuvo 20 AIO Filters: 1 Media caddy, 1 200 micron filter sock, 15 lbs dry rock, 18 lbs live sand Heating: 150 W heater Cooling: AC Infinity AXIAL 1225 Fan - Amazon Temp Controller: Inkbird controller ATO: Tunze Osmolator 3155 RODI Unit: Liquagen 4 stage (tds of city water is around 45 originally) Lighting: 1 Kessil a160 Blue with mounting arm Lighting Controller: Kessil A series spectral controller Return Pump: Stock ~250 gph Testing: API nitrite, API Ammonia and API Phospate, Refractometer, American Marine PH Monitor and probe, Inkbird Temperature probe, Hanna Checker Alk, Salifert Ca, Salifert Mg Possible additions: I want to add an MP10, but have been looking for a good deal on Craigslist. I may add an algae scrubber, they seem pretty hype. Dosing pumps may be needed once I dial in my corals needs. Livestock: Fish: 1 Clownfish, 1 Orchid Dottyback (deceased - jumped out of the tank the first day) Corals: Softies: 1 rhodactis mushroom, 1 neon green toadstool leather,1 ricordea florida mushroom (orange), Utter Chaos Zoa, LA Lakers Zoa LPS: 1 Aussie elegance coral, 1 Blastomussa Wellsi SPS: 1 red montipora cap Inverts: Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemone, Fire Shrimp, 1 astrea snail, 1 trochus snail, 1 narcissus snail Maintenance: -25% weekly water changeover -feed a variety of foods -Add a bit of phyto (not sure how helpful this actually is, probably will not purchase again) Diary: Update 1: Tank Startup - Used dry rock and live sand, in a previous tank I had gotten aptasia and it was a nightmare so I endeavored to keep this tank as pest free as possible. I have really liked the dry rock so far. I got dry rock with a nice purple finish and was able to cement it into a cool arch. I used the NYOS reef cement and it was a nightmare to mix though it did work in the end after much frustration. I originally wasn't planning on using a temperature controller but stumbled onto one for free and holy cow is this thing nice. 100% worth the 40 bucks it would have cost if I bought it. I used dr tim's one and only for cycling + ammonium chloride and was pleased. It wasn't instant, my tank still took about 20 days to cycle, but I could very clearly see the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates changing as I tested. Update 1: I added my first fish (clownfish) after a month and then added a piece of macro algae a week after. When I added the macro algae, it may have brought a pest because my fish started losing scales near his gills. I freshwater dipped him and treated the tank with prazi pro, thinking it could be flukes. He has been great ever since and the tank has been happy. Update 2: I went to a Coral Farmers Market recently and picked up a few goodies. I want to see how a variety of corals will do in my tank so I got a Blastomussa Wellsi as well as two different kinds of Zoas. I probably will not add anymore coral for a while. I recently purchased a Hanna Checker for Alk and will be using Salifert test kits for testing Ca and Mg. I want to dial in where I'm at and get a handle on how levels change over time before adding anything else. The tank had some diatoms form. The sand is a bit browner now and there is some on the rockwork as well. I reduced the amount of time the light was on each day. I was at 12 hours which was way too much. I may reduce a bit further from 9 hours down to 8. I have a gradual ramp up throughout the day currently and keep the spectrum mostly blue. The Salinity and temperature have been extremely stable and Nitrates are remaining low week over week. Everything in the tank looks like it is doing well so far, though. I added a Rainbow Bubble Tip Anemone! I absolutely love anemones and a friend gave me a good price on a 1 Inch diameter foot. It has been a bit brown the first few days, hoping it colors up nicely after it gets over the shock of moving. My clown has not hosted it yet. The zoas are just doing ok. Not sure where in the tank to put them. They are open, but don't look as vibrant as at the store. I added an orchid dottyback, but he jumped out of the tank the first night 😞. I will need to get a lid if I want to keep any fish that are in danger of jumping. I would love any feedback and suggestions. Picture Appendix First time adding water shot: 8/29

    Clown fish nipping

Hi I am new to the hobby and I recently went out and bout my first two clownfish one is a small perc. And the other is a half medium phantom clownfish probably about double the size of the perc I’ve noticed the phantom will go around minding it’s business then swim over and nip at the smaller fish and then go off again then a little while later comeback and do the same thing the first night I watched it and it only happened one or two times but I got home today and I’ve noticed that it’s done it about 6-7 times in the last 20 ish minutes what should I do and is this normal? Oh and I also talked to the lady at the local fish store and she said she has two clowns that she added at the same time one perc and one false perc and she said it worked fine since they were added at the same time

    Clownfish bullying

Hi all, I bought a pair of misbar clownfish a few months ago from my local pet shop (only fish in my tank with a fire shrimp). I did my research and found out that clownfish pairs have to bond. My female clown is still constantly nipping and dragging my male across the tank. I sepperated them at one point as I felt it was too much. After them being together for around 3 months they both did the twitch to each other and I thought they were paired. The male is always hiding around the return outlet and only really moves at feeding time and at night. I’d love to here any reponses on what I could do or why this is still happening. Thanks in advance Chandler
