Cheato in Rear Compartment, Macroalgae in display.
Heydude posted a topic in Macroalgae and Seagrass
Hi all, I have an Aquaone Nano 35, this tank if you don't know it has built in rear compartments for the heater, pump and filter media etc. My questions are, could I put cheato in one of these compartments, are there any benefits of doing so? Also, thinking of putting some macroalgae in the display area, what are your thoughts on this, any suggestions as to species to look for? Thanks in advance, Tony. -
this thread will follow set up and progression of my mixed reef tank... or at least my attempt at it. this tank sits on our kitchen counter which is why I chose an all in one. Even then there is a tangle of wires and hoses. But it’s discrete enough and my 2 little girls love it so far. 2 months in after initial set up. -upgraded to maxi jet 900 to increase flow -removed coralife UV sterilizer as it might have been inhibiting flow - reduced feeding to every other day - added chaeto to chamber 1 with basic white led desk light lying around house. - running 1 fresh bag of carbon and 2 bags of ceramic rings in stock sump rack chamber 2 -Kamoer ATO one -12 lbs Marco reef saver dry rock -1 or 2 inches live sand Inhabitants: -false percola clown fish - blue neon cleaner goby - high fin red banded goby - tiger pistol shrimp coral: red chalice frag favia frag florida ricordia. currently battling ugly algae tank phase. 😱

I have an idea for a 55 gallon low maintenance tank. No sump or mechanical filtration. Just chaeto, soft corals, and a couple hardy fish. The goal would be for the growth/harvesting of chaeto to keep nutrient levels low enough to eliminate the need for water changes/outcompete undesirable algaes. I would assume that since I only stocked chaeto, soft coral, and very few fish I wouldn't need to dose (except maybe iron for chaeto?) I basically got the idea from the Triton method (minus LPS/SPS corals)/the BRS refugium testing series/tanks like https://www.nano-reef.com/featured/2016/brad908-r114/. Thoughts? More Details: I am thinking of doing bare bottom, some dry rock, LED lighting, heater, strong powerheads. I am worried that without sand/lots of rock the biological filter might not establish, but I was also hoping that lots of chaeto would make up for it, since all of that macro algae also has surface area for bacteria (right?). Basically just want to better understand if a very simple, very low maintenance tank would work. Really not sure though, hence why I'm here asking for advice.

Greetings everybody! I have a question about my filtration on my Fluval 13.5 I'm using these Marine Pure balls which are suppose to have crazy amounts of surface area and all that. But it seems something that people talk about that they don't are the levels of aluminum that it could leach. being a small nano reef I don't want any levels of aluminum in my water column. Has anyone heard of this? Also, is there a better alternative for such a small tank? I've filled the whole second chamber with these balls. Maybe transitioning to a small bit of chaeto would be a more natural way? If it matters, I have upgraded my return pump to the Sicce 1.0, so there's an alright amount of flow back there! Thank so much!

Hi, I have a question, do I need to turn on the light in the fuge exactly when the tank's light is OFF, or 1h before? Thanks

I recently got a Biocube 29 secondhand from a man that frequents my LFS. It has the Aquatic Life nano skimmer in the intake chamber, and I was wondering what I should do with the big chamber before I go ahead and fill it. I wanted to have a mixed reef system, primarily with softies, but I would like to grow monti caps on the upper levels as well. Would it be more effective to run a couple of bags of zeolite, and GAC (probably with the other Zeovit products), or to simply run a fuge light and chaeto. I certainly know more about the chaeto than the Zeolite, but I am by no means an expert. I just want to have the most effecient way possible, preferable without tacking on too much to the biocube shell.

Hey reefers!! I'm headed down the chaeto route and I'm looking for suggestions on an LED for healthy growing a Billiard size chaeto ball in a media basket on my all in one. I see the JBJ and IM options. Can I get away with less than $60 refugium light or are these the best options. Clearly these are just little fixtures with 4 leds, seeming like a 6500k intensity. I don't need it to come with a magnet as I'm just going to tape it to the outside of the aquarium. Are there any DIY battery powered "tap" lights or regular soft yellow leds that will keep the chaeto alive? It's hard to find a small enough one however I see this one on Amazon that seems like it would work but a reviewer said it wasn't helpful and killed off his chaeto. The space in the media basket is one approx. 4"x3" I'm thinking I won't need a specific intensity. Thoughts and suggestions welcome

Is chaeto worth it for a 6 gallon nano tank(without skimmer)? will it help decrease nutrients level or no?

Every month or so, I throw away chaeto. Very clean, pest free, pods free. You may get some baby trochus snails or snail eggs as the cutest trochus snails are growing in my sump. Just pay shipping which is ridiculously almost $8 now for USPS flat rate priority mail 2 days. You should be able to get chaeto for free from local reefers or get them for $5 at your LFS. But I figure I will offer mine if those options are not available. NO REFUNDS. No guarantee on DOA. I am literally stuffing a sandwich bag with them, put them into the priority mail box, and dropping it off at the post office. No heat pack or cold pack.
