  2. Slow and steady. I previously introduced myself in the first post of my 5g FW Pico. I'm using an old Mr Aqua 22L. I'd like to have something easy to maintain and also serve as an Apex testing environment during work hours. Armed with a handful of equipment put into storage a decade ago and a budget spinning out of control, I set the tank up opposite my desk. Wazawai's UNS 90L

Been away from the hobby (salt and fresh) for a very long time. Recently decided to get back into it. A little slow on the saltwater startup compared to freshwater. Another 90L freshwater above the saltwater 90L and four UNS 30C's above that (shrimp tanks). Maintenance had to be easy, hence the BioMaster. Equipment had to be quite/silent and low wattage, hence the A80's (15w each and no fan). The rack further restricted options. UNS 90L BioMaster Thermo 350 - 60ppi sponges, canister will be mostly Seachem Matrix, 100% silicone tubing Aquario Neo Flow Lily Pipes - Premium with surface skimmer/Reliever 3x Kessil A80 Tuna Blue w/ Spectral X controller and Mini A-Series Gooseneck - need to devise a better DIY mount for them <--DIY mount completed Apex for temperature/heater control - had an old one in "the box" X1 Pro Wifi Dosing Pump for ATO - predetermined evaporation amount Reef Glass Nano Protein Skimmer - already have air for freshwater cubes on top of rack AI Nero 3 Red Sea salt mix (standard one) LifeRock Nano Arches & Nano LifeRock Dry Live Rock CaribSea Aragonite Special Grade Haven't thought of stocking much as of yet. Probably easy stuff for now although the lights should be able to support most anything I'd want, tank is only ~12" deep without any substrate. May add a Nero3, but am unsure about even the lowest setting in this tank. My last experience with something similar was an MP10 years ago.
  4. "What kind of tank do you have at home?"This was a question I would regularly get while installing and maintaining tanks. For the last decade, I've largely worked in homes and businesses on the East Coast inside other people's aquariums. If you know any mechanics, they probably drive a beater. Likewise, the sandwich artists at Subway reach for anything but a sandwich for their own lunch. The last thing I wanted to do after cleaning fish tanks for hours at work was to come home and clean another. And so, I didn't have a tank that was mine for a very long time.Filling Alexandria Renew's 7,000g Native Freshwater Display Last summer I moved back to Phoenix. This is the place I first took a step into the hobby, after watching a reef episode of Tanked back in 2012. I got my first industry job here at an LFS (now gone) named AquaTouch. I briefly grappled with starting an aquarium service company or joining one of the many existing teams in the valley. Instead, I accepted an opportunity at Neptune Systems to provide remote support for Apex controllers. While the work suits me well, it has left my hands dry for a while. Long enough that having an aquarium (or aquariums?) of my own became an exciting idea again. And I needed somewhere to put all this gear I was collecting. 5g FW Planted Desk Pico Current Equipment List (Updated 4/16/23) 5g 10x10x12 Glass Aquarium Seiryu Stone, Spider Wood, & Aquasolum Black Humate Neptune A1 ApexJr w/ VDM, PM1, Temp & pH Probe Custom Probe Holder & Break-Out Box (SmartReefIntegration) Kessil H80 w/ Apex Link Cable EHEIM Skim350 Clscea G700S CO2 Generator & Solenoid Current Plant List (Updated 4/16/23) Salvinia minima Bucephalandra theia Bucephalandra catherinae Bucephalandra brownie Microsorum pteropus Cryptocoryne parva Anubias nana petite Crinum calamistratum Thread Links: Current FTS (Updated 4/16/23) Current Apex Dashboard (Updated 4/16/23)

    Will Apex support offline mode?

So in the midst of a landscaping upgrade at the end of the day, right before that last email I see "Outlook Offline".... what? when? Why? I go outside and yep a cable was accidentally cut. I return back inside to call the telecom provider and lo and behold, I realized I had just fed my fish and turned off their pumps. As I fired up the Neptune app I get Apex Offline in red.... not helpful at all.... I need to turn on pumps and for some ripping things apart is not an option. What if I was away remotely and used the feeder? I was fortuanately able to get to the plug and have just enough to reach a UPS surge port but this brings up a critical question while I am debating the whole Red Sea app vs Neptune App since AI doesn't support IOTA or api over wifi multicast any longer. What if my internet is out due to a cyber attack or other random energy or climate incident, are we to expect we cannot access commands on our Apex locally? Is it possible to get a prompt for direct local connection for outlets? Also, if I was using the feeder (which I do have and plan on using in two months), would a feed cycle that starts before an outage also not resume after? This is important as the purpose of the controller is to not only centralize but to "provide control" in the event of adverse or unavailable vendor control. Welcome comments, thoughts...

  7. FM's Round 2 Reef

    FM's 15g Waterbox Peninsula

After almost a decade hiatus from the hobby, I got the itch again and decided to do things "better" this time around and correct some of the mistakes that I made my first go at this. The goal was to keep things as simple as possible, utilize a small footprint, purchase quality equipment, create an "easy" to maintain system, and stay under a $1,000 budget for all tank/equipment/rock/sand to get things started (looking back at this laughing at the thought of all this). Below is what I ended up with (I even hit my budget mark with $50 to spare!): Tank: Waterbox Peninsula Mini 15 Lighting: AI Prime 16 Controller: Neptune Systems Apex Pumps: Sicce Syncra Silent .5 Powerheads: Hygger Mini Wave Maker ATO: AutoAqua Smart ATO Lite Heater: Eheim Jager 75w (2 for redundancy) Substrate: CaribSea Special Grade (15lb) Rock: BRS Dry Rock (10lb) RODI: RO Buddy 50gpd Entire tank was setup 5/16/21 and running in about 6 hours, which was mostly just waiting for salt to mix. Live sand and dry rock clouded things up but cleared in under 12 hours (assuming I can thank the filter sock for a big part of this). Not planning to add any live stock for at least a month after cycling with the assistance of MicroBacter 7 and some live rock rubble from an established tank to seed the dry rock. No lights at all or water changes during cycling until confirmed completed. Will do a 80%-90% water change when cycle is completed to get any excess nutrients out of the tank for when the lights get to turn on to avoid any nuisance algae that can be avoided. Looking forward to seeing how things go! May 2021

    Bay Area Nuvo 10

Hi all, and hi to the Nuvo 10 community! For the past year or so, I've been wanting a reef of my own, and I'm now addicted. I decided on the Innovative Marine Nuvo 10 for the compact size and transportability, given that I plan to take it to college eventually. As of the moment I am writing this, I currently have put the rock and sand into the tank, after cycling the rock for about 3 weeks in a 5-gallon bucket using Fritz Turbo Start. The sand is Fiji Pink, and the rocks are Walt Smith 2.1. I have the tank on the 10 gallon white JBJ Nano Cubey Stand, which looks really great with the tank. Equipment List IM Nuvo 10 Tank 10 Gallon White JBJ Nano Cubey Stand AI Hydra 26 HD (Modified AB+ Settings) Cobalt Neo-Therm 50 watt heater (best heater on the market) Sicce Syncra .5 Return Pump Vortech mp10wqd inTank Media Basket (Running inTank filter floss, 2 chemi pure blue nano packets, and 1 marinepure cube) Tunze Nano ATO (Not running a skimmer, I'm running 4 MarinePure cubes in the second chamber) Aquatic Life 100gpd RODI unit Tropic Marin Pro Reef salt (mixes extremely fast) Tank as of August 16, 2019. 12. Current FTS: (updating as progress is made) I started reefing a little over a year ago, I’ve learned a lot, had plenty of failures and successes but I believe I’ve learned from most of not all of my mistakes. My first tank was a trial of sorts and I feel that it’s run it’s course, pico tanks just weren’t my thing so when I realized I had the space for a larger system I started planning. This is roughly what I decided I wanted to do differently: - legit QT - sump - fuge - change maintenance habits: vacuum sandbed, test more frequently/have monitors to do that for me, wc on a more consistent schedule - apex This started 4 months ago? And this is my progress lol The stand finally got set up a week ago so now I can actually start working on some stuff. The tank on the right is gonna be my “QT” I will have dedicated separate tools and such so that proximity shouldn’t be an issue and this way I can enjoy that tank too. Maybe I’ll turn it into a frag tank at some point. It’s a Waterbox 15 AIO with stock return, 50w or 75w eheim, mp10 from old 20g, and a nanobox led. I’ll be transferring some live rock from my tank to seed it and soon after all my critters so I can shut down my old tank. Obviously tons more more to do and I don’t even have a display tank yet!! I’m working backwards and it’s kind of bugging me but I needed the QT set up to shut down my old tank and rearrange some furniture. The current plan is something like a 80g shallow, the UNS 120S (~70g) is probably what I’m going with but I am looking at custom tanks so I don’t have to drill it myself and can get a slightly larger/longer tank for the same price but I’m not sure that route will pan out. So I still need: - a tank!!! - apex + a few modules - skimmer - a hanger for the lights This is still gonna be a long build but I’ll be showing steps of the actual set up, I won’t really be listing all the equipment till it’s finalized unless there’s questions.

Livestock List: Clean Up Crew: Dwarf Cerith Snails, Nerite Snails, and Nassarius Vibex snails Female Yasha Hase Goby Red Banded Pistol Shrimp ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ It all started with this box of glass and this box of rocks: I decided to go with some Pukani Dry Live Rock and start out with as sterile of a system as possible. I soaked the rock in a diluted bleach and water solution for 2 weeks to remove any organic materials that might have been left over on the rock. After that I did a muriatic acid dip. I did about a 20 minute dip. I then let the rock cure in a bin in my garage for a few months in fresh water, doing 50% water changes every week or so. If I was going to do this again, I would dip for less time, with a more diluted solution. It is pretty crazy just how much the acid ate away from the rocks. I didn't take any pictures of this process, but to give you an idea of what I mean, here are some aquascapes I was playing around with before doing anything to the rock: And here is the first ever FTS: December 15, 2018 As you can see, the acid really opened up a lot of tiny little pores in the rock but it also ate away a good amount of the rock itself. I'm not saying I wouldn't do that again, but I'd definitely do it differently next time. Anyways, the tank finally got water in it, and got a Dr. Tim's fishless cycle going the first week of December 2018. Here's the Most recent FTS from the other day (sorry for dirty water, I had just finished doing a bit of scraping/cleaning): February 15, 2019 The first additions after the cleanup crew were a Female Yasha Goby and a Red Banded Pistol Shrimp combo I scored from Diver's Den. Here's a pic of the Yasha while she was being drip acclimated: I didn't get any pictures of the shrimp that were worth sharing unfortunately. And once they went into the tank they disappeared for 2 days. I'm happy to say though that today I was able to catch a glimpse of the goby coming out to snag a few Mysis shrimp I fed! She wouldn't let me get close enough to take a good picture without going into hiding, but I managed to snap this one: Well, that's pretty much all I have for now. I'll update with some more info tomorrow as far as future plans are concerned and hopefully some more pictures! I do apologize for the quality of the photos, I have a pretty old phone, and I'm not the best photographer to begin with - but I do promise to get better as I go. I know how much everyone loves pictures, and I'd like to have a nice photo documentary of this tanks progress. Thanks for stopping by! Please feel free to post any questions/comments/concerns. I'm looking forward to being part of the Nano-Reef community!

Added ball valves, check valve and break out unions. Bulk Reef Supply red pipe with grey and white fittings. I used 40lb of Billy's Reef Connection dry rock. For the cleaning method I used 1 week in RO/DI and bleach (10 gallons of water to 1 gallon of bleach). After that was 1 week in RO/DI and I added Seachem Prime twice. Then they dried out for 3 days in the sun before adding to tank. The rocks are said to have been "lab tested" and showed just trace amounts of phosphorus in the results so I trusted him and chose to not do muratic acid cure or the 2-3 months in Saltwater with GFO and water changes. Time will tell if I made a mistake or not. The sand bed is 30lbs of dry sand. I used Caribsea flamingo reef which was rinsed for about 1.5 hours until the water ran clear. So as of today the cycling process has been going on for 1 week. It's the usual......Lights off, skimmer off and 2 ppm of Dr. Tim's ammonia once and Dosing of Microbacter7 every day for the first 2 weeks and then wait. You know the drill............ i'll also be ditching the peg legs holding up my light right now. I just haven't bought the galvanized piping to build my own little arms to hang it from. 21. Fellow reefers, need your help.I’d like to set up my smart micro ATO (I’m running kalk in my ATO) to my apex and set it up as such to shut the ATO off if for some reason it kept running and my pH was going up.So far my configuration is this:PHX2Fallback: offSet: OnIf PHX2 > 8.60 then offFrom what I understand, if the module is disconnected then the ATO will just be off, which is what I want until I figure out what is wrong an why the module was disconnected.Set on means that the ATO under normal circumstances will be on, which is ok because the micro ATO has an optical sensor. My if statement says that if pH rises above 8.6, perhaps if ATO malfunctions and starts dumping extra kalk, then it will just shut the ATO off.Does this look right to everyone? Any flaws in this set up? Advice and opinions are welcome. Also, would this set up work for a dosing pump with alkalinity as well? The doser has its own program, so again if it malfunctions I just want the apex to shut it off if pH rises above 8.60 indicating that the doser might be malfunctioning. Thanks for any help!

  24. Hi. I have been researching a bit about dosing pumps, testing a couple of them, comparing features, etc. trying to find out the ideal feature set for nano reefers. I'm considering building a product prototype. I assume that most nano reefers use dosing pumps for: Carbon dosing (vinegar, nopox) Alkalinity Calcium Magnesium Perhaps additives like the ones from KZ (Zeovit). Some thoughts (product design goals): Must be able to dispense small doses with a good level of accuracy. 1ml accuracy? Adjustable flow rate from 5 - 14 ml/minute would be ideal? Good enough for the needs of most nano reefers? Must be compact. What do you think about a dosing pump that comes with a power supply for stand-alone use (with a separate timer, just like most people do with BRS and Drew's dosing pumps), but also has an optional cable for connecting it directly to the 24DC port of a Neptune Apex controller? Would that be a desirable option? Easily replaceable pump heads. Easy maintenance. Your feedback is appreciated.

    20 Gal Nano

So after a couple of years out of the game i decided to dip into corals again. This will be my second attempt at keeping corals. Previously I invested in a 60 gal Cube with quite a nice system. I had to tear it down as I was moving in and out of apartments to often and it got to the point I just could not keep my setup the way I wanted. So I finally moved to an apartment I bought and expect to stay in there for quite a while, which allowed me to plumb my apartment the way I wanted it to handle as large an aquarium as I wanted. There are a lot of things that I still need to do to eventually install a larger aquarium but a nano-reef has always been in my heart. So a couple of weeks ago I brought my equipment from storage and installed what makes sense in a 20 gal Nuvo Fusion from Innovative Marine. I love this little tank and hope to keep here an LPS system. I have learned a lot with my 60 gal setup and I hope this challenge will take me to mature a system that looks like those amazing featured aquariums. They are breathtaking. I have been inspired from the start by Meetrokat ; Medred and more recently by this guys You guys have done something amazing. I hope to achieve your level of success.
