what is the bare minimum of reef saver rock i can use to aquascape a standard 20 gallon aquarium. filteration should not be much of a concern as i have a canester filter packed full of bio media rated for a 70 gallon and will upgrade to a sump very soon, and i have a 1.5 inch sand bed. i was recommended 0.5 kg/ 1 lbs per gallon but can i go much lower than that. its a fish and invert only system and i will not be adding coral as its illegal in my area. thanks!

Shorty Biggie's IM 20 Nano Reef Build Thread: Hello all, This is my first build thread and I am new to the community here. Mainly I am documenting this build thread for a few reasons. First and most importantly, I want to help those beginners or others who are still learning how to create functional and healthy reef tanks. I seek to document the entirety of my build, in order to help show the process rather than just the result. I know everything I have learned has been through researching others experiences online, so if this build is helpful to those in learning, this will be a success. With that being said I would not consider myself an expert or even advanced by any means. I have had experience with a 55 gallon, a 32 gallon, a 20 gallon, a 13 gallon, a 10 gallon and now back to this fusion 20. I have been able to have healthy tanks that did well, however I have never gotten far into corals. Ive bought corals in the LFS every once in awhile, but never took the time to learn how to properly test, supplement, care and grow corals, I pretty much have just thrown in the coral and let it be. Therefore, this will be a learning experience for me as well, and I hope documenting my build will bring others to this thread who can provide input and advice to further this build and not just help me, but others who use this thread as a guide to helping them build their ideal reef! With that being said lets get started! Background on this tank: Originally I planned a reefer 250 build, even saved up for it, and eventually had a change of heart. Since I had not dove deep into corals I decided to use a fusion 20 and all the equipment I had accumulated to set up a small tank with a larger budget and really take the time to focus on corals and learn before getting the reefer 250, so I didn't end up with an expensive tank full of rock with no money or experience for corals. I had a fusion 20 in the basement so I planned to use that, but once I pulled it out I noticed a large crack in the front right bottom corner, so I ordered another from BRS. Of course while emptying out the new tank from the leak test I bumped the bottom left back corner, however it was a small chip, not even 1/3 the way through the glass and only the size of the tip of a high lighter so I just went with it, thus far its totally fine, I'm not too concerned. This tank has been wet for 2 days, unfortunately I did not take pics of the set up, but im still very new in the process so most important info isn't missed Tank Info: Tank: Im Fusion 20 Light: Nanobox Duo Plus M (15 inch gooseneck) Stand: Ikea Besta Frame (I can post the specifics on every single part used if requested) Sand: Tropic Eden reefflakes, 1/2-3/4 deep, I like to stir the sandbed each water change Rock: CarribSea Life Rock roughly 14 pounds (already established from LFS store) Flow: Ecotech MP-10qd, Hydor Korilia 240, stock pump (may upgrade, please provide recommendations) x2 Spin stream nozzles Filtration: x2 InTank media baskets, running filter floss / purigen / chemipure elite in one, filter floss / Phosguard/ chemipure elite in the other Heater: Just an average aqueon heater; works well for me Top off: Tunze Osmolator 3155 Top off Container: 3.5 gallon plastic top fin tank Possible Future Equipment: -Sicee 1.5 Return Pump -IM Media Reactor -either IM Ghost Skimmer or Reef Glass skimmer -Neptune Apex (the cheaper one) -Neptune DOS Stocking Plans: Fish: x2 Picasso Clowns, 1 Atlantic Pygmy Cherub Angel Inverts: Small clean up crew, 1 fire shrimp, maybe 1 starfish (thoughts) Corals: Wide range of flowing corals, isolated GSP, acans, Ricordia, other lps and maybe some sps, what other corals would work well on my elevated rock work? Modifications: -small piece of lexan in between the screws for nano box and rear tank wall (I overtightened the screws on fusion 10 and busted the glass) -used wood glue on all connecting pieces of Ikea stand when building it To get up to speed on everything thus far I will give a run down. I first set up the stand. It is an Ikea Besta frame that is white on the sides and a gloss white finish on the doors. It fits the length of the tank perfectly and is just about an inch or so deeper to allow room for equipment off the back. I really like this stand because you are able to customize the stand color and doors and you can change the height of the stand. Im a tall guy, about 73 inches so I used a higher stand than what was available. The stand itself is about 40 inches tall and with the tank the top is 53 inches, perfect for a guy my height, as I don't have to bend way down to look into it. The stand is basically 2 pieces stacked on top of each other, secured by 4 metal braces, some sticky pads and wood glue. It is very strong, and fits perfect. Aside from using wood glue no other modifications are needed. Like I said the stand can be customized in the height for what works for you. I can link the parts if requested. In total,it cost about 190 dollars, much cheaper than the one IM offers, its stronger and customizable as well. I I have gotten all the supplies ready, and the day before the tank arrived I purchased the live rock from the LFS. The LFS is about 15 mins away so there shouldn't be much die off. While constructing the aquascape I kept the rock in 5 gallon buckets with saltwater, heaters and flow. The rock was never out of the water for more than 20 minutes, and since the rock was already seeded and established in a tank, Im not expecting much if any of a cycle. The tank has been filled for 2 days, and I have been ghost feeding and still have no ammonia, no nitrite, no nitrate, perhaps maybe slight nitrate, no more than 1-2ppm, if any at all. I called the LFS and said I am still not seeing any ammonia, should I throw in a shrimp or something to kick off the cycle? He told me there may well not be a cycle, and had me come in to get dirty water... I know DIRTY water. Basically he took the sponge out of one of the store tanks and wrang it out in a bag, which made the water turn a really gross and really brown looking color. He told me to put this in the tank and monitor the levels. However, I am trying to be cautious with this build, so I did not end up putting that water in my tank, I wanted to hear yall's opinion on this? Essentially the idea isn't to use that water to put a bunch of beneficial bacteria in the water, but to put a bunch of gross water in to feed the cycle and really build up the population to break down the large amount of waste in the water. Not sure if this is a good idea or if it will lead to problems later on or cause my tank to have a bunch of crud in it. Since I have been ghost feeding and still have no ammonia. I will probably wait a week and if still no ammonia I will proceed with livestock. As for concerns with this build, mainly right now it is flow. I plan on stocking a mixed reef, with multiple hammers and torches, plenty of ridordia, acans, and many other lps as well as maybe a few sps. Due to the rock work, I had to move the mp-10 closer to the front of the tank, therefore I put in a korillia in the back corner to eliminate deadspots behind the tank. Im worried this may be too much flow and the korillia may blast the corals on the top right side rock too hard, what do you guys think? Also, I plan on upgrading the return pump to a Sicee 1.5, but Im worried I may be putting too much flow in and will just be blasting all my corals, I don't really know. My final concern with flow is that the left side spin stream is kind of blocked from the tall rock on the left. I basically rotated the spin stream upside down so that its more to the top, and now when the spin stream is at the bottom of its rotation about half the flow coming from the nozzle hits the rock straight on, and the other half grazes over the top, should this be a concern? I have used this site so much in my research that I thought it would be best to chronicle my journey here. I am new to reefing and after half a dozen books and countless hours online I finally took the plunge and bought an IM Fusion Peninsula 20. For lighting I found a good deal on a Current Orbit Marine PRO 24" and so far I really like it (but then again, I'm new so not much to compare it too). I also swapped out the filter sock for an inTank media basket and changed the stock pump to an Eheim compact 1000 after a few days of dealing with the noise (this tank is on my custom built work desk). The tank has 20 lbs of live rock from the LFS and 10 lbs of CaribSea Ocean Direct sand. I also added a Jebao SW-2 powerhead to the back wall and an IM Hydrofill hooked up to a TOM Aqua Lifter for ATO. There is a 75w Cobalt Neo-Therm heater in the third chamber as well. Here it is the day I flooded it: I mixed my own salt with RO water from the LFS that I transported back to my house in truckload of Home Depot buckets. I used Tropic Marin Bio-Actif and did the mixing in a new Rubbermaid Brute 28 gallon recycle bin with a heater and cheap powerhead. I installed my new RO/DI system a few days later and my TDS is zero. I rigged it up so I could bypass the deionization if I wanted drinking water. Here it all is under the sink: It has an dual in-line TDS meter measuring both RO and RO/DI separately. I calibrated it to my handheld TDS meter and it reads true. Red hose is for fish, blue hose is for me. The tank I have been using to store RO/DI has an air release port that the water line fits into perfectly. I used a sharpie to make the measurement marks on the jug more visible from across the room. I have a 1/4" airline from my ATO pump running into the same hole when it is set up near the tank for that purpose.

I was originally going to go with the IM 10 after being inspired by the thread on here but after a little research I quickly changed my mind. I wanted a respectable light that I could work from my phone. Most options I was looking at gave a 24 inch spectrum which is essentially wasted on the 12 inch IM 10 imo. For an extra 100 dollars I doubled my space and more efficiently utilized my hardware, no brainer there. I forgot that when I upgraded that I can get 2 media baskets so I basically just forgot the other one. I have recently found a new air pump as well I will probably end up using for the skimmer.The tetra can be loud when not wrapped in a shirt which looks like ass. Heaters are pretty meh to me as long as they do not break. There is a adjustment dial that I correspond with the digital thermometer for temperature. It has numbers on the dial but we all know how that goes. As for the PP-4 I have no idea what to mode to put it on. Right now I have it on wave-1 and the dial turned a little under half, it has my water rocking back and forth softly. Please assist me on that front if possible. The other big question mark I have is what to set my AI Prime HD at. I just asked the AI Prime facebook group but if someone out there with this tank help me out that would be king. I saw so many debates on substrate I decided to not beat myself up about it and just get something solid. Hopefully this fits the bill. Luckily my LFS carries Real Reef Live Rock so I got to pick and choose and even set up my scape there. The Matrix is basically just going to fill the empty caddy once I get it and act as additional surface area for the long term. I am a little concerned about when the purigen will go bad and how I will know but that will be in the air whether it returns. I ordered chemipure blue right as amazon ran out so I am still debating whether I should refill that void, let me know if you think it is worth it. I like the tiny scrubber of the two little fishies magnet and the fact that it isn't made out of the same plastic as a 1993 mac like nano-mags really tipped the scale. Also one of these hermits does not look particularly red except for maybe his knees, felt worth noting. As far as future goes I have plans on getting those spinstreams, the new air pump, and another light. When it comes to future livestock I have some ideas but have nothing set in stone so we will just have to see where the road takes us. If you follow along I will be doing my best to keep you entertained and updated through the trials and tribulations of the Sea of D. I previously owned a 60 gallon cube mixed reef with a 40 gallon display 'fuge a few years back, currently own an Tropheus only 100 Gallon tank and needed to dip my feet back into a reef tank lol. So here is the deal. I have two tanks. I have a 20 gallon tank and a 5 gallon tank. I want to move 1 of the fish from the 5 gallon tank to the 20 gallon tank. Here is the parameters. In the big 20 gallon tank, I have 2 clownfish, 1 little yellow fish, and 2 shrimps. I would like to move a four striped damsel from the small tank to the big one. Could that work? Would the fish get into fights? Any help would be amazing Thanks, Trev

Hello everyone, I'd like to start by saying that although I just signed up for my own nano reef account, ive been lurking through these forums for months and have found a wealth of help and answered questions; this seems like a great and helpful community that I'm happy to now be a part of. So I started my first nuvo 20 gallon nano reef and it has been up and running for just over a month now. This is my first attempt at saltwater, although I am not new to fishkeeping. Basically, im having second thoughts about some of my ideas and would just like to bounce them off of some experienced members who may be able to steer me away from making poor tank choices. Here are some details of the tank: - 20G nuvo fusion - current USA LED light - koralia hydor 425 gph - 18-ish pounds BRS pukani dry rock - 20 pounds live sand - innovative marine custom caddy media baskets -chemi pure blue - 0 ammonia 0 nitrite 10ppm nitrate - 1 ruby headed fairy wrasse - 1 pygmy hawkfish - 1 large electric blue hermit crab - 1 medium trochus snail - 1 small hermit crab - 4 LPS frags Things I plan to add: - reef octopus HOB 1000 skimmer (already ordered should come this week) - aquamaxx carbon and GFO reactor (to eventually replace the chemi pure blue) - aquamaxx biopellet tumbler - Larger clean up crew - Leopard toby puffer - Pygmy angelfish So I'll start with the disclaimer that I know the fairy wrasse in the long run is probably too small for this tank and will most likely not be a permanent member of my reef community. However, she is very small right now (1.5") and seems to be thriving in my tank (hopefully I can upgrade before she grows too big and I have to take her back to my LFS) So my first question is, did i add too much rock? Ive searched this and I know the simple answer is no, you cant have too much filtration. BUT, i am a little concerned that im reducing my already small water footprint, and want to provide my fish with enough room to swim freely. Basically I just want opinions, could i do better with my aquascape? Should i remove the chunk of rock on the right or get rid of the massive cave piece? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Next, i need help with some questions regarding the stocking of my tank. For one thing, I know i need a bigger CUC. So far theyve been keeping algae under control for the most part, but i woke up to a bit of a diatom bloom again and could definately use some more snails. I would really like to also add a leopard toby puffer, but I'm not sure it would fit in my tank well. Liveaquaria suggests 30g but lgreens nano fish guide in the stickies says 20g. I know these puffers arent exactly reef safe but id be willing to replace some hermits and snails if it would eat them. What do you think about a leopard toby puffer in my tank? I also am interested in a pygmy cherub angel. However I think that might be over stocked if i also had the toby, fairy wrasse, and pygmy hawkfish. Thoughts? im not too worried about biological load. With the reef octopus 1000 HOB skimmer and biopellets, and bi weekly 25% water changes it seems like id be worried about not enough nutrients if anything? Does anyone have experience with biopellets on a tank this small? Ive read mixed things and it seems like id have to start with a VERY small amount of pellets. But it seems like a good time to try while the system is still new. But like i said im more worried about space. I want my fish to live happy lives where they arent all cramped in against eachother. so could i do a toby, pygmy angel, fairy wrasse, and pygmy hawkfish? Maybe if i removed some rock to clear up space? Maybe i could get rid of the wrasse and have the toby, pygmy angel, pygmy hawkfish, and a small goby that way i only have two fish really in the water column? thank you for reading thus far, any comments, thoughts, suggestions, and experiences are welcome and appreciated
