Ole G but still a Newbie

Hello all and I look forward to your help and talking with all of you on here. Just a quick background on me, I grew up with my dad always having fish only tanks with almost nothing but trigger fish, those things are still my first fish love. This was in the 90s so technology obviously has cam a long way since then. My first tank was in 2002 and was an attempt at a reef tank; it was 55 gallon and did quite well for what little I knew back then. Had several cool corals and fish but everything died in one day, I still suspect something got poured in my tank during a house party I had during college. The last tank I had I did a Red Sea Max 130 all in one tank in 2012. This did well but looking back I did not have the time to dedicate to this tank at the time and lost interest due to other hobbies. So with all of that long nonsense out of the way it brings me to the present 2018 and what I want to do or should I say what my wife wants me to do. We own a salon and she is remodeling at the end of the year and wants me to put her in a reef tank in her sitting/processing area for clients to enjoy and keep kids entertained as well. I asked her last night what her goal was for this tank and I got it needs to be bright colors and fun. I have found out that technology has come SO far in the last 8 years and I think I want to go with a Coralife 32 Bio Cube with LED. I want to have 4 or 5 fish including a pair of maroon clowns as I have always found them fun for people to interact with. The other fish will just need to be fun and active according to her. I want a small cleaning crew of snails, shrimp and crabs. I have old live rock, that is now dead, that I will be cleaning and seasoning starting this weekend to be used. I come here to ask for your help in planning this tank and want to use that and my knowledge base and have a cool build thread for everyone to follow and give feedback. Am I on the right track? Can you guys help me design a tank that is easy to care for and entertaining? I know that it will take work to make this thing function well and I am going to teach my wife along the way so she can have her tank and then one day since she has hers I can have my dream tank at the house even though I am not sure what that is yet. I am sorry for this long post and hope it doesn’t turn anyone off but I am in college mode right now as I just finished two papers so I wanted to explain everything really good. I am looking forward to any and all help. Thanks!!!!

    RSM 130 UPGRADE HELP

Can anyone weigh in on my upgrade ideas for my 130 please. Here is what I am thinking I bought this used and want to adjust a few things. Thinking about the Tunze 9002 protein skimmer so I can do the media basket is it worth the money for the upgrade? Its a pain in the butt to change the media under the pumps. Skimmer cup for in the tank to help with film on top of water is it worth it? New bulbs and when I do this I am thinking about replacing guard screws and gasket. New circulation pumps because I have to take apart at times to restart them. What is a good site to get all of this stuff. Thanks for your help

  6. So while doing a water change tonight I was siphoning water from my tank and was trying to lift my lid up all the way and my hose sucked up my pulsing Xenia! I immediatly pulled it out of water and it fell right out. The damage looks bad looks very deflated and crippled. So I finished the change and put the lights back to it and prolly 40% or less opened up. Is it worth keeping and if so what should I do next?

    NEED HELP ASAP!

Well it looks like something was definitely wrong with the fish. It looks like he was dead this morning. He was way back in the back under a rock and I did not have time to break down the tank to get him out so I will make sure he is dead and get him out after work today. I don't know what the deal is and I am getting frustrated with my tank!!

Got a sick fish I think. Got my little six line wrasse Saturday and he was doing fine. Woke up this morning and he looked like he was struggling up under a rock so I moved rock and he had like a slime in his hole. Came home at lunch and it was same thing in differrent hole. I feed him and he ate fine but now he is user rock with same slime in back of tank. He looks to be struggling to swim and breath. I am gonna check the water params now and will post when I get then but any help now would be great. Side note it almost looks pregnant with a fat belly is that Possible?

    Feeding Question

I got a six line wrasse Saturday and was feeding him with the pumps on and he was darting everywhere. So I turned pumps off and everything was so stagnant looking and depressing lol. Which of these feeding methods is best to use?

    34 Red Sea upgrade

One last question for everyone before I start this. I am going to do my Rock Scaping tonight and was wondering if I should just do a sturdy stack how I like it or should I glue it with something? If so what can I get from Walmart to do this with? Here is my dilemma I am afraid I will want to change it one day and it is stuck because I glued it together. Please Please Please help me.

    34 Red Sea upgrade

Thank You that makes perfect sense. I will add some pictures tomorrow with the results of the move. Not going to lie I am nervous as I don't know what right now about the move and sending the tank into a cycle and killing everything in my tank which isn't much. Just a Pulsing Xenia three crabs and two snails so if they die no biggie but rather not loose them.

    34 Red Sea upgrade

I saw the video but it doesn't help me with water level can someone please help me with this. Right now I have the vinegar water covering the pumps and way over the wall between skimmer and pumps is this good or does it need to be lower then that? I am going to rinse the tank and get it set up tonight if I can get this figured out today it be great. Thanks

    34 Red Sea upgrade

This is stupid question but I am going to ask anyway. In the back filter area where should the water level be? I noticed that mine is above the wall going from skimmer to pump. Is that normal? If not how do you control water level in the back area?
