  1. Nope, this thing refuses to encrust! We tried for a year when it was just a little frag, thinking it would grow outward onto surrounding rockwork like any other faviid coral. Finally we gave up and let it do it's thing ... which is what you see here. I built up the base a little with epoxy to keep it above the sandbed is all.
  2. At least that's what I call it. But I have yet to ever see another one like it anywhere, in person or online.
  3. I decided to use fiberglass. Dunno why I didn't think of that from the start. It worked like a champ! One layer of cloth on the outside, one layer inside, with some thickened epoxy to fill the void where a piece was missing. A light sanding around the edges and done. Much stronger than new! And since I already had the materials on hand, the cost was almost zero.
  4. I have a barely-used Aquaclear 110 that got damaged in a move. I hate to just throw it away! I guess these are acrylic, right? I have some Weld-on 16 ... I'm thinking if I had an acrylic "patch", I could just glue it on and be good to go. Thoughts? Any ingenious ideas on where to scrounge a piece of patch material? Thanks!

    Aggressive LPS?

    I brought this coral home recently, all excited about it. Dipped it in ReVive and put it in the display. The very first night in the tank, it tore a new @ss into the green favia on the left. Nuked the whole side of it.
  6. So are you two guys actually saying you think DSB's are the best way to export nitrates? Not being argumentative, just curious. I thought this method was considered outdated years ago. What about the space they require? It seems to me that the main reason nano reefs are more challenging than larger reefs is (duh) because of the smaller number of gallons involved. In my mind, there would have to be an overwhelming superiority inherent in DSB's for me to sacrifice all that volume. So ... they take up a lot of space, and they can result in a tank full of hydrogen sulfide. What the heck is the upside??
  7. There certainly is no end to the DSB argument. I guess I just look at it from the 'risk/reward ratio' angle. FWIW (and this is a whole 'nuther endless argument) it is said by some that zero nitrates may not even be the best possible scenario, and that some level - say 2-5ppm - may actually yield better results. Who knows. I wanted to experiment with this in the past, but every time I approached even 1ppm, I got wild outbreaks of cyano. How some people maintain N levels like 20 or more is beyond me - the cyano would flow out my tank like The Blob, and swallow me whole in my sleep. I've heard it has something to do with having a perfect ratio of N to P ... but that too is way above my pay grade.
  8. I'm probably not the best person to imitate ... all I use are 10-15% weekly water changes and an oversized skimmer. Somehow, I do manage to maintain zero N/P levels, although to be honest I haven't tested for either in a very long time.
  9. Of course there are. Like Kleinreef said, they're not impossible ... just inadvisable. There are many effective methods of nitrate removal which do not carry the inherent dangers of a DSB, and which do not occupy as much of the precious, limited space we have to work with in a nano system.
