Office Setup, 2.5G with a Mandarin Goby. Thinking of moving him to my 30G if he runs out of food......which looks like it will be sooner than I had hoped....

If you get rid of the mandarin, get a clown goby or something similar. That would be cool.

Thanks for the compliments! I am currently looking for an online supplier of amphipods, just in case I can't train him to take frozen foods. Any ideas?

JUST incase? You should have gotten one that takes prepared foods in the first place and found an amphipod source before getting that mandarin. And that tank isnt even big enough space wise for a mandarin. But It looks nice though!

you cant train him to eat frozen food!Mandarins can only eat pods!something about the way thar mouths are shaped.Pods are like little bugs u can c on the glass,if u cant see pods u cant have a mandarin. If thay do eat something like shrimp it means he is not finding pods.

Well, so far my pod population has pretty much dissapeared. I have read before that they can be trained, but that it is pretty difficult and very rare. The LFS suggested supplementing the pod diet with zooplankton which I have been doing. If he doesn't take any of the other food (frozen and dry brine shrimp) I have been trying, he will definetely be moved to my 30 gallon where a very healthy pod population exist.......

I thought manderins eat copepods, not amphipods. Or is it both? Correct me on this please.

petetheglassblowwer - obviously you dont know what you are talking about, I have seen mandarins eat large brine, bloodworms and mysis. Its mouth can open wide and can eat more than copepods.

Nice tank!! I am starting up a 2.5 Nano just like yours, and I was wondering how much lighting do you have on it?

Spotted mandarins can be quite easily trained to eat all sorts of food, green or common mandarins are a bit harder, i'll lay odds that this one hasn't been getting enought food, hopefully he has, they can live for about 3 months on reserves and a small diet but many die after that long, sad, they are really easy to catch and pretty.

Look out for that hair algae covering those polyps...maybe more consistant water changes with RO/DI or distilled water. Either way you should reduce the nutrients that they thrive on.

I dont really know what mine eats any more, but ive had him for around a month and all is still fine... Theyre not gobys are they? theyre dragonets?

nice nano, but save the mandarin and get him into a larger, well-established aquarium. you could starve him to death in that tiny nano.

Don't worry folks, the mandarin has longed been moved to a 30G tank. He was doing fine in the 2.5G for a few weeks but I couldn't get him to eat anything other than the amphipods. Needless to say, he finished those rather quickly. I use strictly RO/DI water for my water changes, at least once a week. My Zooanthids aren't doing too good. My richordea is healthy as are my GSP's. The Sun Coral doesn't look too good though. I have a Coralife 20W hood on top (50/50). Still planning out the DIY MH lighting......

get rid of the poor fish. he will starve to death. the smallest i would put him in is a 55 with 60 to 70 lbs of LR.

Sun Coral need to be fed, they are not photosynethisizing corals. So it won't matter how much light you shine on them.... do some research.
